fairy tail
i liked it up until acnologia's introduction right before the timeskip, but a shift to new animators was when it really started to dawn on me how...not good of a series it was. i picked up the manga around that time and the blatant fanservice + winning battles with no effort other than friendship (but mostly fanservice, won't lie) really grated me. i still adore Mystogan as a character and sometimes even wish we could go back to when the series was newer and more people seemed to enjoy it. it's nowhere near as good of a series as the younger me thought. =(

I used to really enjoy Sword Art Online.
The concept of a group of people becoming helplessly trapped in a simulation/virtual reality game is quite compelling. However, the series failed to live up to its potential. Initially, I was enthralled by the show, although Sao quickly developed into an utterly meaningless, repetitive series. A new character would be introduced and in the blink of an eye they'd be disposed of completely. It became this sort of never ending cycle of diminishing characters, which was very unappealing to me. Moreover, the plot itself just became so immensely bland. I finished season 1 and have no interest in any of the following seasons.

Would probably be a good idea to avoid anything by Reki Kawahara or adapted from stuff by him because they're all kinda like this.

Thank you! I will make a mental note to avoid anime that he's had any sort of involvement with.

lmao my Gravitation phase was probably my most embarrassing for sure. But I mean, back then there weren't exactly a lot of LGBT options if you were a kid trying to figure stuff out and seeing any form of validation was pretty affirming, even if it's hella cringeworthy a decade and a half later, lol.

Hitman Reborn, idk why I watched it or who suggested it to me....but somehow I made it to end of series without dropping it halfway.....I know it's first arc is just very hard to get into and it was suppose to be a gag/comedy manga/anime at first? but still whole series felt like fillerish to me as compared to other action shounen. Only highlight from series was Varia arc and episodes after (130 maybe? )hibari switching out with future hibari.

Well, as a child it is easy to think that anime is a far better version of cartoons. If it was Japanese, I loved it. I would forgive it. I would fixate. I would not be wise to the fact that it was slime for a long while yet. Now I think that cartoons knock spots off anime. At least you get a laugh and not a headache.

Death Note, Oreimo, Vampire Knight are among my sins. I stopped watching Death Note early on because the levels of violence were too much for my delicate sensibilities. Vampire Knight was an exceptionally rare indulgence. Oreimo was nostalgic, but rubbish. It's a spit bowl of archetypes and the concept is a little disturbing. Kureneko should have died, though. And she did in my mind.... in lava. Ah, the joys of imagination!

You make it sound like the dislike of the series was in the past. Do you feel differently now or think you would enjoy it more? It's not a particularly violent series generally speaking.

She was the only part of that show I actually liked by the end of it :')

Hrmm... well, back then I was infatuated with anime. Nowadays I'm wiser. I'd probably hate it, if anything, yet it wasn't too bad. Less heavy on the old archetypes, eh what, but yeah... just not my cup of tea. Maybe I would enjoy it for the more gothic themes. I'm sort of on a Castlevania kick as far as vibes are concerned right now. I don't know, really! There was something awesome about it.

I was a bit younger at the time, and was off my 'FUCK YEAH VIOLENCE' phase that I'd been in since, like, I was four. So yeah, I was sensitive. Better now.

I didn't like Kureneko from the off. Especially when she told the game developer guy to 'go die' just because she didn't like his game. She's the embodiment of everything I loathe about internet people - pretentious without flair, haughty, critical, dismissive and secretly as bland as hell. Now, the characters from One Piece...! I'd make friends with them in five seconds flat. Brilliant lot. And Doramon! What a guy.

They were all rubbish in Oreimo, to be fair. I liked Sayori for a while, though. Before she turned into a rich dullard... and don't get me started on the girl with glasses from the anime club. Drawing porn of your colleagues/friends might be endearing to some, but to me its just aggravating and in poor taste. If she was a guy instead with female colleagues/friends, then that be the height of despicability and creepiness. Eugh.

Ria Hagry was decent, I guess. She gave me decent vibes.

But yeah, I've got a very sharpened sense for good characters nowadays and I hold contempt for the things that fall short. Anime lets me down on that front a lot. Naruto and One Piece are brilliant exceptions.

The Pokemon anime could be an example, though lately, I've been cutting it the most slack I ever did. It's not for me, and that's okay. Nonetheless, there was a time I was into it as a kid, but I don't know if it deteriorated in quality or if my sensibilities changed, but I wasn't into it anymore by the Hoenn seasons. That said, I wonder if I ought to give it another go, though the sheer volume of episodes kinda scares me; even the dub and its removal of certain episodes is daunting because it's still a lot.

Another example would be Naruto, though unlike the Pokemon anime, my opinion never really softened again. I was an on-again off-again viewer of the anime, but I started to lose interest in the show around the time Orochimaru got Sasuke to join. It never really picked up again after that, at least not fast enough for me to stick with it, and finding that arc continued even as the characters got older really did nothing to help any. A quick look into where the story went after I quit kinda made me feel like I dodged a bullet on that one.

In general, I don't like it when story arcs go on longer than necessary; I might give some leeway depending on the format the story is told, but generally, if I start asking myself "when will this end?" I view it as a sign I'm losing interest. It just so happened Naruto's case spared me from the dephs of its later degradation of quality.

I'll have to revisit some anime to see what else qualifies for this.
