If you've played one of the classic JRPGs like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, then you'll know what this is. If you don't know then here's a short summary, in some JRPGs, one's party can take on a class each (for example: Mage, Priest, Warrior, Martial Artist, Sage. Paladin, Hero, etc) where stats are changed and as the party progresses in the class, they can learn certain abilities or spells pertaining to that class (and master the class). I don't know much about Final Fantasy or any other JRPG and their class systems and how they work (I only know of Dragon Quest's system), but in Dragon Quest, there is a certain place called Alltrades Abbey where you can take on, change classes and even consult a seer to see how far you have progressed in your chosen class.

For Pokémon, the classes would be various Trainer Classes (like Youngster, Hiker, Swimmer, Beauty, Ace Trainer, etc)

I don't really know how this would work in a Pokémon game, but I do have one idea.

A new way of getting rare moves or items, instead of buying expensive TMs (from either the Department Store or Game Corner)

If anyone else has an idea how this could work, then post it below.

How to get the e with the accent over it used in Pokémon.

I think this is just a mechanic from a different kind of game than what we're trying to make. We're already adding a lot of changes to mechanics in the overworld which players need to adjust to. I'm not convinced if adding this kind of system is worthwhile or even beneficial to Pokemon Cataclysm specifically.

I would sooner see some scripting done than add more icing on the dough. :)

True, I don't really see how a Trainer Class System would really work anyway, it was just an idea I had.

Pokémon basically does have this already, in the form of Pokémon types.

More recent Pokemon games have allowed players to select a trainer class on their trainer card... maybe we could have something fun like that? An NPC with a list of options somewhere in the game that lets you change your class on the card? Just something fun for players to find.

If it was something fun like that, I wouldn't mind. Maybe it changes the color of your hat :^)

And also the kind of Pokemon one used. It determines what is your job class. You cannot hold a Pokemon that deviates yoir job class — unless you are a vagrant.

Eh, I don't really like the idea of being limited to one pokemon type - even Gym Leaders sometimes have pokemon of the 'wrong' typing. There would have to be some kind of bonus incentive if you went with that, like a powerup to make up for your massive type weakness.

I feel like this concept and Pokémon just don't mix. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good class system. Total sucker for 'em. But I just feel like it doesn't have a place in these games.

I absolutely love class systems in games and I do feel it could work in Pokemon, like perhaps make it so certain pokemon get small boosts when used by a certain class? Or maybe the effects of some items/moves are improved under a certain class, or both. Like for example, Bug Catchers make Bug Pokemon stronger and have Repels last a little bit more, Breeders are the "all-around" class, Scientists have better Potions, etc

Mirage of Tales had a really cool job system where you could be a Ranger that does missions or a Seeker that hunts legendaries or something like that, but that's a bit different from this idea.

Picking a Trainer class and having some minor benefits could work though, but nothing major. fahademon's ideas are pretty good; additionally Fishermen could have a higher chance to fish rare Pokémon, Hikers could climb up rocks without needing Rock Climb, etc. You could 'unlock' these classes as you progress and only have one at a time.
