III. An Appeal To The Herd
Having been dismissed back behind the stage after the Primary's evaluation, Soren couldn't help be smile confidently at the glowing remarks he had received, especially from Dequan, who appeared now to have a cut of favor for Soren above the rest. With his cleanly sculpted Furfrou sashaying by his side, he kept his composure until everyone had entered the common dressing room, and everyone was accounted.

He took a seat in one of the plush sectional couches, sighing as if the first round was an ordeal that was finally over. He let his usually upright posture slouch a little as he leaned back in his seat, Fifi taking up residence right beside his feet, her fan-like tail wagging as if gracing a noble with a breeze. He saw another contestant with a hardly-veiled expression of ire tautly trot by the group, the Chatot on his shoulder looking unnerved as the two of them took to a private dressing booth in the back. Soren recognized him as one of the couple contestants who received an abysmal reaction from the judges, and he couldn't help but feel rather split about it. On one hand, that only meant less competition for he and his Pokemon, as he figured the green-haired boy was clearly unpolished and would be a striking contrast to Soren's style. On the other hand, his childish sympathy was showing--he would have hated to be in that guy's position right then.

His spine immediately straightened when Juan reappeared not long after everyone had finally filed in. The host pointed out their short amount of time to rest before the first person was sent out to stage for the first Appeal, and motioned to a list that was posted on the wall. Soren looked over and squinted, identifying his name was at least not the first two. This gave him some time to observe the other acts, pick apart the judge's criticisms, and apply them to his own routine.

Someone by the name of Corrine Corduroy was first. She did not waste time making herself particularly known, much to Soren's chagrin. He felt like he could do without her condescending attitude as she departed and further made jabs in her public address. He secretly wished she would trip on her clunky shoes on stage, or that her Wigglytuff rolled itself nauseous.

"I wish everyone good luck," he said aloud, looking around the room at the others with a small smile. "Even her." It was an attempt to be relevant, to establish himself as a competitor with good sportsmanship, someone free of vice and to remove himself as a potential target. He wanted to appear as friendly, and the stark contrast was at what better timing than with Coco's haughty pride, and the muffled shouting that uncomfortably made itself heard through the door of the one other occupied private room. Fifi did not share her master's intent though, and only turned up her nose as she kept her eyes on the screen.

Soren, too, turned his attention there. The performance, he watched, was short and unimpressive, he felt. There was not much he could learn from a rolling, puffing pink balloon, but his trained eyes did catch the Wigglytuff unfurling just enough to snatch at some fireworks Coco appeared to have dumped behind her in her crouch--a most unflattering pose to do so in. Soren couldn't help but giggle, and tried to hide it with a hand.

That's something I wouldn't ever do, he thought to himself. Not like that at all!

Soren was about to ask his interesting company what they thought of the performance, when it seemed that no time was wasted jumping into critique. The criticisms were mostly the same: too much rolling and a poor execution of discretness. Soren would be sure to play to both of Fifi's category strengths and to be sleight in hand when it was his turn.

On Carlos' optimally sour note and the booing applause of a divided audience, Coco returned to the den with the rest of the group. Soren, finding this to be ideal circumstances, uttered, "Sorry that your act didn't go over as well. What did you learn from it?"

Jay

((Still no formatting soz))

Royal march music started playing, signaling the beginning of Jay's performance. Jay strutted onstage in the same outfit as she wore before, except now she was wearing two-inch dark purple heels that stuck out from the rest of her color scheme. Leo flew out beside her, similarly adorned in his king's robe, minus the specter. Jay trekked to center stage, and posed regally, her right hand outstretched and her left on her hip. Leo settled on the floor in front of her, his crown tilted back on his head. He smiled and waved to the crowd, from which random gasps and exclamations of, "Cute!" emanated. The music suddenly became tense, and wailing violins began to play, escalating quickly as Jay spun around rapidly, raising her arms upwards towards the sky. As she spun, Jay shed her red dress through means of a quick release mechanism that tucked the shoulders away, revealing a menacing black and purple swathed dress that matched her heels. She posed upwards and cackled loudly, the music coming to a dramatic crescendo, before swooping her arm down, and tearing off Leo's pendent, making use of that release mechanism.

The lights became vaguely more reddish purple with some spotlights searched around the stage, seeming to swirl incoherently. The music started to move with a thumping rhythm. Jay showed the pendent to the audience with a pass of her arm, the yellow gem glinting in the lights. Leo turned around and swept himself up into the air, flying straight towards Jay, as if to tackle her to the ground. Jay launched to the left in a cartwheel, the necklace soaring through the air in a circular motion attached to her hand. She dismounted perfectly, Leo banked towards her, his cape fluttering in the air behind him. He used Light Screen, which he had managed to augment to look like a curved shield in front of his head.

This shield was headed straight for Jay, the thumping music pressing Leo onwards. Jay stretched backwards into a backbend, Leo flew over her head, and the backbend quickly transformed into an upward kick, one leg extended as both flipped over herself. The timing was perfect, as Jay had practiced this part the most for precision. To the audience it appeared as if the evil Jay had just bunted the king Emolga into the ground. Leo belly flopped into the ground, using his entire body as a flat surface to spread out the force evenly.

The music became more threatening, and Leo turned over, exposing his belly to Jay, who was stepping towards him menacingly, and began scrambling backwards, pushing his wings into the ground. Leo used Discharge, lighting up the room briefly with a yellow glow, and forcing Jay back a few steps. This gave Leo time to shoot upwards into the air, straight towards the roof. He then extended his wings out fully, the music instantly turning into a tension building almost silence as he stalled in the air, executing a hammerhead. Leo freefell backwards for a significant amount of time, the audience held its breath. He snapped around to right himself, and paws outstretched swept in an arc to grab the pendent away from Jay, the music becoming triumphant.

Jay threw her arms in a circle, Leo coasting away, unable to grab ahold of the precious jewelry. Leo then flew into a half loop, flipping over with his tail glowing, before shooting an Air Slash towards Jay's legs, who leapt upwards into a split jump, the air rushing beneath her outstretched legs. Leo's Light Screen shield formed again, and Jay this time tucked forwards into a front flip, tossing the pendent into the air. Leo flew in between the glinting golden gem and Jay's rotating body, before Jay stuck the landing and stretched her hand upwards, the necklace falling perfectly into place.

The music started to build suspense with a shrieking oboe, and Leo redoubled his efforts, his face in a grimace. The audience loved this. He used Double Team, and began circling Jay, more and more copies forming until it was a seamless circle of twenty-four different Emolgas. The most grueling part of the combination was about to start. Rapid-fire, copies of Leo peeled off of the circle and flew in to attack Jay, who began to destroy them with various kicks. High kick to the right, attitude turn into a grand battement, punch straight above, knee up to her chest, and on. Finally there were only two Emolgas left, which simultaneously flew towards Jay. Jay leapt upwards and extended her legs to kick one out of the air, but the other swept under her neck, pulling the pendent off and tossing it towards the roof. The music reached a climax.

Leo flew through the necklace as it travelled through the air, turning into a climbing spin. The tableau was set perfectly, a triumphant Leo hundreds of feet above Jay that cowered in fear, red versus purple. Leo began to use Electro Ball, the electric gem glowed bright yellow. The Emolga flipped around, and from his tail sailed a shining yellow ball that glowed with sparking electricity. It exploded in a brilliant shower of yellow and smoke, obscuring the stage, and seeming to have hit Jay with a trick of Pokemon stage combat. When the smoke cleared, Leo was perched atop a fallen Jay triumphantly, with his paw raised in the air. A redoubled version of the original royal march music began playing and the audience went wild. Jay finally relaxed onstage, feeling herself sink into the ground. The appeal went off without a hitch. She was only worried that she may have run herself dry of ideas.

Corrine "CoCo" Corduroy

While Coco was staring at the screen, still fuming from the judges' words, one of her competitors tried striking up a conversation with her.

"Sorry that your act didn't go over as well. What did you learn from it?"

She turned to face him, trying to remember his name. Saren? No, Soarin. Or probably Soren. She was still upset, but it wouldn't do to let him see that. She idly brushed her hair back behind her ear, offering the boy a contemptuous smile. "Didn't go over well? Sure, not everyone liked it, but the right people did. It did exactly what I hoped it would." Of course, that was the problem. She knew she'd have to leave her comfort zone to win over the other judges, without straying too far and losing the favor she'd already built.

"And I've learned that the judges play favorites, and I happen to be the favorite of the judges with the least amount of clout. I've also learned when to keep my mouth shut, and not ask silly questions. Maybe you'll learn that some day."

The next appeal was starting, and Coco turned back to the screen, already forgetting about Soren. "Alright, judges. Show me what you like. Let me know how to 'wow' you..."
