"You are allowed to generate at most two (2) Pokemon of the required Types)." What do you exactly mean by "generate"?

In order to build your teams for certain challenges, only a particular type of Pokemon maybe allowed. Such types may include Steel, Dark, or Fairy types (types which either did not exist in the older generation games or are extremely hard or difficult to find or access in the course of a normal playthrough- 'mons that you find either late in the game or are only accessible in the after-game).

Emulators usually have a cheat option (Gameshark in VBA for instance) where you can insert a particular code to alter the species of a wild Pokemon you encounter in grass, etc.

I'm allowing participants in this challenge to use this cheat so that they can select whatever House they want without fear of having a (more) limited team.

An example of this is if someone wants to choose House Greyjoy in Pokemon Fire Red; Steel types are limited with only Magnemite/Magneton being the only ones available prior to the after-game. By using the option to generate, the challenger can alter the species of a wild Pokemon encounter to that of say a Skarmory or another Steel type so that more Steel types would be available for use in his/her playthrough team.

          UPDATES ON STARK CHALLENGE:

          Update 1
I did all of the introductory stuff on Emerald. Started with Treecko and played up until I got my Pokeballs. I went on to catch a Poochyena I named Robb. I boxed Treecko and made Robb my Starter. Afterwards, I generated a Murkrow I called Bran and a Sneasel I called Arya. I also picked up a Zigzagoon to use as an HM Slave.

I made my way up to Petalburg City, catching a Seedot along the way. My Seedot was named Ned. I did the whole Wally story and made my way through Petalburg Forest into Rustboro City. I level grinded in and around the area until Ned evolved into Nuzleaf. I picked up Cut, taught it to Zigzagoon, and made my way to the Rustboro Gym. Ned made short work of Roxanne. I saved Peeko from Team Aqua, rescued the Devon Goods and accepted the tasks set for me by Mr. Stone (Steven's letter and Captain Stern's Goods).

I made my way back to Mr. Briney and set off for Dewford Town. I arrived in Dewford Town and delivered the letter to Steven in Granite Cave. I quickly went back to Devon Corp in Rustboro to collect the Exp Share and went straight back to Granite cave to level grind. I got all of my Pokemon up to Level 20, evolving Robb in the process and Bran made easy work of Brawly. I healed up, went back to Mr. Briney, made my way to Slateport and saved the game on the beach there.

          Update 2
I trained up a little on the beach, beat Team Aqua in the Museum and delivered the package to Captain Stern. I level grinded until I met May underneath the Cycling Road and beat her in battle. I then fought my way up to Mauville City, beat Wally and trained in and around the area. Once I had all of my Pokemon up to Level 30, I took on Wattson and I beat him, though his Manectric almost killed Robb (Robb survived).

I picked up Rock Smash, made my way to Verdanturf Town, and helped Wanda and her Boyfriend. I picked up Strength and made my way up to the Fiery Path. I then fought my way up to Fallarbor Town, met Lynette, and did the event with Professor Cozmo in Meteor Falls and Teams Magma and Aqua. I then made my way back through the Fiery Path and up to Mount Chimney to fight off Team Magma. I beat Maxi and his goons with relative ease.

I made my way down to Lavaridge Town and saved the game.

          Update 3
I trained up a little bit and took on Flannery's Gym. I beat her easily enough, though I accidentally sent out Ned and almost lost him. He lived though. I healed up at the Pokemon Center, collected the Go-Goggles from May before training up a little bit more.

Once all of my Pokemon were at Level 40, I made my way back to Mr. Briney and he took me back to Petalburg City and the Petalburg Gym. I beat the trainers in Norman's Gym and took down dear old Dad. Although, his Slaking was a tad bit difficult to brake down. I then picked up Surf from Wally's Dad taught it to Zigzagoon, and trained in all the new areas now accessible to me. I picked up Ice Beam from the Abandoned Ship, made my way back to Mauville and did the New Mauville event. I saved the game from there.

          Update 4
I trained and level grinded all the up to the Weather Institute and did that event. I beat Team Aqua, collected Castfrom (which I immediately boxed) and started to make my way up to Fortree City. I fought May, collected Fly, picked up a Leaf Stone hidden around the area (for later use) and finally got to Fortree City. I met with Steven, picked up the Devon Scope, caught an Absol just on the outskirts of Fortree City who I named Sansa. I trained up my Pokemon a bit, made sure that my Pokemon were each level 45 (Sansa was Level 35) and took on Winona's Gym. I beat her with relative ease and fought my way down to Lilycove City.

I healed up, made my way to Mount Pyre, beat Team Aqua there, and collected the Magma Emblem. I made my way to the Magma Base near Mount Chimney, beat all of the Magma Grunts, and made short work of Maxie. Groudon was awakened and took off.

I flew to Slateport where Archie stole the Submarine and I followed them back to Lilycove City. I infiltrated the Aqua Base there and beat all of the Grunts. Unfortunately, Archie was able to escape. I healed up, surfed to Mossdeep City, got to Shoal Cave, I caught a Spheal I named Manderly, and got back to the Mossdeep Pokemon Center to heal up and saved the game.

          Update 5
I trained up a bit (Manderly especially) until Manderly evolved into Sealeo and took on the Mossdeep Gym. I beat Liza and Tate no problem and made my way up to the Space Center. I took on the Magma Grunts there and helped Steven to defeat Maxie once and for all.

Afterwards, I visited Steven, picked up Dive, taught Dive to Manderly (I already taught him Surf) and followed the Underwater Path until I caught up to Archie and Team Aqua at the Seafloor Cavern. I beat the Grunts and made my way to Archie. I beat him, but not before he woke Kyogre. I met with Steven on the surface and made my way to Sootopolois City where Groudon and Kyogre was wreaking havoc.

I met up with Wallace at the Cave of Origin and set off for the Sky Pillar. On the way, Ned learned Extrasensory and I used the Leaf Stone I got earlier to evolve him into Shiftry. I finally got to the Sky Pillar, trained up a bit (Manderly evolved into Walrein and I went back and forth from Pacifidlog Town)) and got to Rayquaza in time for him to put an end to Groudon's and Kyogre's rampage.
I healed up, took on Juan's Gym and Ned made short work of most of his Pokemon (Manderly took care of Kingdra). I healed up and saved the game.

          Update 6

I made my way to Ever Grande City and Victory Road. I beat Wally easy in there and made my way to the Pokemon League. I trained up a bit more until all of my Pokemon were in and around Level 60 and and I finally took on the Elite 4.

          My whole party beat Sydney.
          Robb and Sansa beat Phoebe.
Ned and Arya (w/ Brick Break) beat Glacia.
          Manderly soloed Drake.
Ned, Robb and Sansa took down Wallace.

I made the Hall of Fame.

Immediately after the game restarted from the end credits, I flew to Victory Road and trained all of my Pokemon up to level 70.

Afterwards, I flew to Fallarbor Town, made my way up to Meteor Falls, and found Steven. I fought Steven with my entire team (bar Bran) and I won without losing anyone. I am the King of Hoenn.

          MY TEAM:

People tend to use their starter (of their choice) until they can get Pokemon of required type. Or you can choose your starter to be Lord Commander (1st House Rule of Night's Watch).

I decided to try this out while I'm waiting on USUM.

Also, I think it might be fun to add the Maesters to the house lineup. They are the scholars of GoT, and their typings could include psychic and ghost, two that are absent from the rest of the houses/institutions. One stipulation for them could be related to their belief/faith in "science." They aren't allowed to use any berries or herbs (natural remedies), and they have to rely on the sponsorship of others. They are servants, after all. ;) Anyway, just a thought. Psychic has always been one of my favorite types, and I think their general frailty and lore suits the Maesters well.

You can choose any starter and roll with it until you are able to capture one of the required types for your chosen challenge. Also, if your starter later gains one of the required types when it evolves, you can use it and start your team right away.

If you're playing the game on an emulator, you also have the option of generating up to 2 pokemon of the required type/s to use from the start.

Sorry for the late reply. work obligations and the Christmas season kept me occupied over the last few months.

You can heal Freeze at the Pokemon Center. It would kind of be unreasonable to not allow it.

                      Hm.

Any Red/Blue players should note that, if you solo Route 22 Rival with your starter without having caught any other Pokemon, you can return to Professor Oak and get five free PokeBalls. This makes the Stark, Targ, Baratheon, and Greyjoy challenges significantly easier.

Thoughts on the families in Gen 1:
                      Spoiler:

Snorlax and Hitmonlee make for fantastic padding as Rule 3's Normal and Fighting types, especially in the challenges with limited items. Gen 1's catching mechanics give a flat 12% bonus catch chance to sleeping Pokemon, so baiting Snorlax into using Rest and flinging Balls frantically will make it significantly easier to get.

Tyrell is by far the easiest for Gen 1, since you can just roll with a Venusaur with Poisonpowder and a Victreebel/Vileplume as applicable. Throw on Snorlax and Hitmonlee for padding, and you're set. Soloing with Venusaur is possible, but giving Snorlax Surf will help against Gary's Charizard.

The Targs have, as their main problem, leveling a Dratini to L55. Honestly, it might be worth hacking one in early just to have it anywhere close by the end. Obviously you're pretty much obligated to use Charmander. Lorelei's Lapras and Gary's Blastoise (if applicable) are the worst enemies in the game for the compulsory types, so teaching Snorlax Thunderbolt or taking Zapdos as your Legendary will do wonders to extend your life expectancy against the Elite Four.

House Stark is painfully... limited in Gen 1. If you don't provide yourself with a Jynx, Seel, Shellder, or Lapras at the beginning, you will solo with your starter until Celadon, be forced to switch to Ninetales/Arcanine, solo Rocket Hideout (hope you kept the Dig TM) and Pokemon Tower, get Snorlax, and be unable to get any of your actual types until Good Rod or Silph. Lapras can solo the Elite Four with Surf | Ice Beam | Thunderbolt | Psychic and some Ethers, so this run won' t be in trouble after Silph, but it will be rough going up to then.

Lannister will be running Blue Version and taking first Geodude at Mt. Moon and then Abra at Cerulean, at which point the pressure eases up. With Persian on the team, this is a relatively easy run; there are plenty of trash TMs for you to toss in exchange for the Gym Leader ones. Plus, Gen 1 Psychics are great.

By far the worst part of the Baratheon challenge is hunting down a bloody Tauros. If you don't enjoy 4% encounter chance and 6% catch chance, consider 'generating it' at game start. That aside, you're allowed to use Squirtle, which is all you really need; give it the Dig TM, leave Lt. Surge until later, and roll with it until you can bring in Snorlax or Tauros to steamroll Celadon's Gym. Once you have all the badges, you're allowed to pay for the Fresh Water to obtain Ice Beam, and nothing can stand against you. Ours is the Fury.

Martell grants you Nidoking and Haunter, which can both carry rather well. Give Haunter Thunderbolt to cope with Lance's Gyarados (and Lorelei's Lapras, if you're not using the X Accuracy Horn Drill cheese strat).

Tully - F YEAH SEAKING. More seriously, you are either going to be stuck with a Starter/Magikarp or Starter/Paras pairing because Magikarp and Paras are the first available Water and/or Grass types, so be prepared for the pain of a Gyarados grind. That said, because Red/Blue forgot to include Electric moves in the late game, this will be an awesome team once you get Magikarp to L20.

Arryn mandates Charmander because the alternative is soloing Brock with a Pidgey. That said, your absolute worst enemy is Lorelei's Lapras, especially because non-Legendary Rock and/or Flying types in Gen 1 are not known for their ability to learn Thunderbolt - so make sure Snorlax has it. (You could also grind up a Hypno after Giovanni, but... grinding it from L12 to E4-readiness will take a while...)

Greyjoy is not so bad - Tentacruel can be immediately useful by exploiting the Gen 1 Lance A.I. flaw. Soloing with Squirtle early on and later taking Lapras makes this relatively easy...

Night's Watch perturbs me because I'm used to running without restrictions on healing items. I guess you can run with Charizard, Lapras, and Lord Commander Hypno (plus Snorlax and Hitmonlee as your Normal/Fighting types). Being stuck with only 9 Hyper Potions (taking PokeFlute as the 10th) could make things rough in Elite Four, so Hypno should definitely have Dream Eater for better self-healing.

                      That said...

                        Challenge complete. Ouch.
                        Spoiler:

Jon Snow, a fiery young Night's Watch rookie, sets out to
reclaim the fabled manuscript of The Winds of Winter from
GRRM. Learning Ember, he scorches his way past Brock,
always making sure he never exceeds 10 total healing items
                        at one time.

The walk to Vermillion is easy, as early-game solos tend
to be. Jon even learns to Dig plotholes, which I'm sure
will be helpful to wrap up the show in one more season.
He even manages to trade a sparrow for a raven; while he's
somewhat concerned that it looks more like a duck, the
raven's previous owner tells him he knows nothing. People
seem to tell him that a lot.

Speaking of ravens, a strange fellow appears to him
outside Vermillion and identifies himself as Bloodraven,
a former commander of the Night's Watch. Even though he
seems oddly unlike the Night's Watch's usual fare,
Jon feels a mysterious power compelling him to accept
                        Bloodraven's aid.

(OOC: I swear I met every Spearow in the area before
                        Drowzee. Sometimes RNG is annoying.)

Jon would even encounter GRRM aboard the ship, though the
man fled at his shouted query regarding TWOW's progress.
The captain, who Jon found nearby, resembled GRRM to a
suspicious degree, and hid his face in a wastepaper
basket, taught Jon how to Cut in exchange for his going
away. When Jon inquired how he might learn to Cut every
instance of "nuncle" from a text, he found himself hurled
                        overboard and the ship departing.

The raven quacked obediently as he taught it how to Cut.

Between Bloodraven's hypnotic powers and his own might,
Jon readily defeated the wildling maiden Misty and
earned passage to Rock Tunnel. Before that, however,
he slew the wicked Surge the American, whose sigil
                        was two paired garbage bins.

Upon reaching Lavender Town, Bloodraven revealed his true
form as a creepy old creature fond of hypnosis. Somehow,
                        Jon was unsurprised.

In Saffron City, Jon's uncle Benjen joined, having
practiced his kicking skills in a foreign dojo.

Spoilers for the show/possible future books:
                        [spoilers]
To Jon's shock, he soon discovered he was a secret
Targ, and claimed his true heritage as a dragon.
                        [/spoilers]

The group destroyed a bandit camp in Celadon and its
fellow camp in Lavender; along the way, they came across
GRRM, who was mourning any possibility of publishing
TWOW before Season 8. He fled, however, before Jon could
pry the manuscript from him. In his haste, he dropped a
                        flute.

Bringing it to the bay, Jon played a tune on the flute
and awoke some gigantic monstrosity, which promptly
toddled towards his provisions and collapsed on a PokeBall.
Jon realized it could only be one thing: born amidst
salt and smoke (he'd provide the smoke if need be), this
was Azor Ahai, come to save the world. At the very least,
it seemed dedicated to saving the all-you-can-eat buffet
                        industry.

...unfortunately, Jon would later die to an assassination
attempt by a fell ninja from a foreign land.

                        (OOC: #$%^ing Self-Destruct! I didn't want to be THAT
faithful to the @#$%ing plot! At least Charizard is
                        Worst Starter, but ^&*@!!!)

A rather irritated Night's Watch headed to Saffron to
pursue the latest GRRM sighting, but, despite clubbing
him extensively with Azor Ahai, he would not turn over
any chapters on the possibility of resurrection. A Silph
employee gave them a fine Lapras as compensation. With
a name like NightsKing, it could only be helpful and
                        innocent.

(OOC: Swept Silph Rival with Snorlax without healing.
                        Amnesiax3+Rest is super-overpowered in Gen 1.)

The Night's Watch dispatched the local White Walker
invasion and, in search of more EXP, voyaged to the
faraway island of Valyria and washed it out to sea.
Adrift without a capable leader, they also raided
                        the Tyrell encampment in Celadon.

Giovanni Bolton was slain at Viridian, and GRRM fled
once again in response to inquiries regarding whether he
really intended to have Jon marry his aunt. Meanwhile,
Bloodraven revealed his abilities to eat dreams - again,
not surprising. The Night's King also unveiled its
psychic powers, but, again, I'm sure it won't be too
                        awkward.

Sam the Fearow was recruited on the way to Victory Road,
and will be first in line if the Night's Watch should need
                        a... spare.

a 1/7 chance, and it happened three or four times in a
                        row... RNG is weird.)

luckily succumbed to Targaryen madness and refused to
use anything but Agility and Barrier while NightsKing
                        took it down.

In a shocking bittersweet ending, Sam died to a critical

it and finished off Blastoise, Azor Ahai having swept the
                        rest of the team.

And, at last, the Night's Watch has recovered The Winds
