Honestly amazing work, and don't worry, I will play the crap out of this demo until the next version arrives!
Yeah, there are 306 variations in which you can pick the type electives and the characters may have slightly different dialogue depending on when you meet them. Obviously we couldn't cover all the combinations, but we tried to make them a little unique.

Glad you liked the Electric class. I had so much fun making that scene, but you gotta thank our writer!

Perhaps after a few days I can upload a walkthrough.
That´s ok. Everything will be a surprise from now on.

This post is including plot and gameplay elements of the new beta,
so if you don't want to spoil yourself too much you might want to skip my post ^^

One thing that I was a bit confused by was the fact how Red chooses his seats,
when there's two familiar faces in one of his classes.
It makes sense that letting the player choose would create many more possibilities
of how the conversations in class go but I felt like his dicisions were a bit weird.

I'm going to referr to a certain scene here, so again, you have been warned :)

        Spoiler:
If you choose electric and grass, Leaf offers you a seat in the grass type class,
but you just straightup decline and even tell her (and Brendan) that you're trying to avoid her.
        Isn't that just mean?
Anyways this scene had me thinking for quite some time...

I just finished the demo! It is very awesome, interactive, and creative. I plan to do other paths in the future while I wait for the next demo to come out. That will probably be in a while. Great work, keep it up!

              Fantastic stuff
I thought the first demo was great, but man
              that was just solid

Now to explore the other options while I wait for the next demo

              Minor update to version 1.0.2a

              - Addressed an ‘UnboundLocalError’ error that may occur when selecting Fire as your second type elective.
              - Adjusted the positions of a few character sprites.
              - Addressed some typos.

Electric-type class was hilarious, while Hilbert really cracked me up during Steel-type class.

Also, Leaf made me fall in love with her instantly. Very good job on her writing.

Really like that I got a Charmander as 'homework'. (Which seems to be the case for both saves I've played up until now, since I thought the first time it was because I had Fire/Dragon (Mega Charizard X), but it seems it's the standard Pokémon. Not that I mind.)
Also, since the player character having a Pokémon at home, does it mean that we get that default Pokémon or one we can choose from a certain choicepool?

Demo is really solid. Keep up the good work and go catch up on some well deserved sleep, you guys.

I was playing Demo 1.0.2a and encountered a glitch. I was rooming with Calem and wanted to see his card after I got it but it wasn't there. I could nor find multiple peoples throughout the overall game either. I think you should look at it.

Even though there is this glitch, I did find replaying the demo really fun. Seeing Electric classes were awesome, but I was hoping to see Korrina in the Fighting-type class. Maybe she will be there in future demos!

That character card display issue popped up a couple times, but it only seems to affect a few people. What operating system do you use and are you playing in windowed/full screen?

As for Korrina, she's a second-year student so she won't be in your class. She was supposed to make an appearance in the demo, but her lines weren't finalized by the time we pushed out the release.

Oh, I guess I am not the only one. I use Windows 7 and I am playing in windowed. As for the Korrina situation, I guess it makes sense she is older. I just wasn't sure what year she was. To me she looks like a first-year but you make the game so it is your decision.

Really enjoyed the 1.0.2a demo. Spent a good 3-4 hours just messing around with the different chat options. Leaf is by far my favourite character. They are so well written that i made a new save just to do the same classes as her. Definitely looking forward to future updates

Pokémon Academy Life (visual novel) - DEMO VERSION 1.0.2 NOTES

                        IMPORTANT:
For those who have previous demo versions installed, you must start over from the beginning of the game in order to play this demo in full. Many internal variables were changed, added or removed, impacting many parts of the game. If you attempt to load an old save file, it is highly likely you will encounter bugs or your game will crash.

Plus, we rewrote some parts of the prologue section so you might as well take another ride through it!

There is no doubt that there will be some kind of bug or inconsistency somewhere in the game. If you spot anything, report it to [email protected]. Your assistance is much appreciated!

                        VERSION NOTES:

                        List of changes from 1.0.1c:
                        - Many prologue scenes were rewritten.
                        - One new scene added to the prologue.
                        - Several prologue scenes were overhauled or extended.
                        - Numerous animation transitions fixed; some may still exist.
                        - Various GUI elements streamlined.

                        New content in 1.0.2:
                        - New scenes that carry on through the first day of classes.
                        - New characters and CG art implemented.
                        - Huge number of alternate dialogue paths based on choices.

                        CLOSING WORDS:
Thanks to everyone who have offered their support. Knowing there are quite literally thousands of you out there wishing us the best keeps us going. While a single linear playthrough in this version might not last more than three hours or so depending on your reading speed, there is an insane number of different side-routes you can take. The game is still in its infancy, believe it or not, and we just managed to finish setting the foundation.

From this point forward, we will be going all-out in terms of writing for plot and story progression. Engines are also being developed to add depth to the game. The next version may take a while for release so in the meantime, play the crap out of this version, report all the bugs you encounter if you can (we'll try to implement the fixes when we can and put out a cleaned up version when possible), and stay tuned for more news.

I tried to load this page and it said the download link was unavailable, and it is unplayable. Did you remove it?

Currently uploading a brief update that fixes a few character positioning bugs. Nothing major. Should be up in 30-60 minutes.

Edit: 12:46 a.m. EST - Demo v1.0.2a file reuploaded on Game Jolt.

                              ATTENTION: Writers & Aspiring Writers

We are recruiting! Details below (and included in original post):

                              Spoiler:
Greetings! It’s time for an important announcement regarding the development of Pokémon Academy Life moving forward. And it involves writing!

Now let’s get a few things out of the way first. We are looking for three to five (3-5) writers to help expedite the process. In the words (paraphrased) of dmjh93, our lead writer:
                              Quote:
“I can do everything myself eventually, but that would take forever.”
That’s basically how it is right now. We need people who are quick thinkers and can adapt to a storyboard that quickly changes, grows and evolves. If we present you with a scene and want you to flesh out the dialogue and descriptions, you need to be able to clearly visualize what is happening and get all the words down. During the editing process, you need to be able to adjust to any requested changes.

One thing to note is that no one is getting paid here, unfortunately. This entire project is a labor of love.

With that out of the way, do you think you’re qualified?

                              Requirements:
You must be grammatically sound. There is nothing worse than auditioning for a writing opportunity and sending in a writing sample riddled with errors. We’re not asking you to be perfect; we make mistakes, too. But be careful.

You need to know how to use editing features in a document. We use Google Documents (via Google Drive) so we can see edits on the fly, ask questions, provide comments, etc. We would rather not deal with email chains that are 150 messages long with countless attachments.

You must have an artistic and logical mind. If you think something doesn’t quite make sense or sound right, you need to call it out and offer potential solutions.

Familiarity with the visual novel’s existing story material and its characters is an absolute must.

                              The Audition:
If you’re interested in joining the team as a writer, there’s going to be a screening process, so please read and understand the following:

                              PHASE 1:
                              • Email [email protected] with the subject line: Writing Audition
                              • In the body, briefly introduce yourself using no more than four sentences. As much as we’d love to hear your life story, we don’t have time for that.
                              • Attach your best writing sample with lots of dialogue. Remember, you’re writing for a visual novel. The majority of the content will be characters speaking to each other. Your writing piece could be something you did in school or in your professional life, a short story you wrote during your free time, a fanfic you published somewhere, etc. Bring your A-game. Showing us anything you don’t consider your best simply tells us you don’t care.
                              PHASE 2:
                              • If we like what we saw in Phase 1, we will respond with a scene we want you to write. We’ll provide character details, key points you must address, and the necessary context.
                              • You must follow a certain format we work with. This is to streamline the process and make it easier for everyone to understand the content.
                              • We’ll provide you a shared Google Document for you to write in. Yes, that means we can see what you’re writing at any point in time. We do this because if you’re selected as a writer, you will be writing under the same conditions. The developer and the lead writer will be able to see what you’re working on and provide comments and answer any questions you have.
                              • You have three days to complete the assignment. While writing, please leave comments and notes regarding your thought process. We can picture or assume many things, but only you know exactly what you’re trying to say. In other words, if there’s a key point or reason you wrote something that might not be immediately apparent, it’s a good idea to leave a note and explain it to us.
                              PHASE 3:
                              • If we like what we saw in Phase 2, we will get back to you after we get the final number of candidates. You’re in the safe zone!
                              • We’ll hold a mini-orientation via email so everyone knows who’s who. More on the process when the time comes.

If you’ve read and understood everything up to this point and you’re still interested, then you’re on the right track. Unfortunately we won’t be able to accept everyone. So remember, if you don’t make the cut the first time around, that just means you have plenty of room to grow and improve as a writer.

There is no set deadline for recruiting. Even after we pick up new writers, we’ll always look out for more talent. Looking forward to seeing what you got. Give us your best shot!

Feel free to ask questions about this news post.

This is awesome! I do have one question about it though.
How long does this example script have to be? I have one on my computer, but I am unsure if it is long enough. Thanks in advance!

There's no benchmark for length. I would say on average a dialogue-heavy scene would be around 1,000 words (without including descriptive text).

We're looking for quality. Some things to think about:
                                - Do these lines sound realistic? In other words, will people normally say something like this in real life?
                                - How does the conversation flow? Are some lines forced or are they natural?

An exception for "realistic" or "natural" dialogue is humor. We all know humor is incredibly difficult to nail. So if you want to attempt humor writing, well, hopefully it's truly funny.

I was thinking of doing a script format, is that okay? I really want to be a part of this so it has to be perfect.

Good question. Here's what the writing tends to look for us behind the scenes.

                                  Clarification notes:
                                  - We use "Red" to represent the player character, but we use "[player_name]" in the script to make it easier to copy/paste the dialogue directly into code for the game.
                                  - Notes included in the script usually appear as comments in our Google Documents.

                                  Spoiler:

                                  SCRIPT FROM HOMEROOM SCENE I:

                                  LEAF: "Let's sit together, May."

Varies; Leaf teases Red before leaving:
LEAF: "Sorry, [player_name], maybe I'll see you in our Grass elective class~!"
LEAF: "Sorry, [player_name], maybe I'll see you in our Electric class~!"
LEAF: "Sorry, [player_name], but since the stars aligned and we'll see each other in both our elective classes, we'll have plenty of time to bond later~!"
                                  Leaf leaves scene.

                                  If roommate = Brendan:
                                  May appears sneaky:
MAY: "Sooo... what do you think of Leaf, [player_name]?"
                                  Else:
MAY: "What do you think of Leaf, [player_name]?"
                                  RED: "Absolutely charming."

MAY: "Hehe, she's a lot of fun to be around!"

                                  MAY: "Come sit by us!"

                                  May leaves scene.

RED: Well, I sure as hell won't sit by [blue_nickname].

RED: I'll gladly accept May's offer.

Fade out. School bell chimes. Fade back in.

OAK: “All right, settle down, settle down.”

OAK: "Good morning, and welcome to your first homeroom class of Kobukan Academy!"

OAK: "I’ll be your teacher for this homeroom. You can call me Oak, but most people simply call me the Pokemon Professor."

OAK: "This world is inhabited by creators we call Pokemon. People and Pokemon live together by supporting each other..."

Note: The previous two lines are what Oak says at the beginning of Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver

Student 1 (off screen): “I can’t believe we’re hearing Professor Oak talk right in front of us. The guy’s a legend!”

Student 2 (off screen): “I know! My dad’s a huge fan of his. He’s got all his encyclopedias, A to Z! Oh man, he’s gonna flip when I tell him I’m in his class!”

RED: Even outside of Kanto everyone knows him. I didn’t know he was looked up to by so many people. He’s like a superhero to them.

RED: But to me, he’s just my neighbor.

OAK: “Now, something you need to know about this class is that it is extremely difficult. Last year, almost half this class failed.”

                                  RED: WHAT?! That’s crazy!

All the aspects to be one of the writers sounds like me, because I can visualize a story and see ways it can branch off into different directions, but I don't think I would be able to join since with the web comic series and school, I won't be able to have all of those on my plate at once.
