Legendaries excluded, because i consider it gutless
to beat the game by using them.

1. Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise
The most versatile of the starters. Can learn ice moves,
which are OP in gen1, considering they beat all flying
type pokemon, even if their second type is supposed
to be strong against ice. Also, you won't have to worry
about having to catch a pokemon that can learn SURF.

2. Pidgey/Pidgeotto/Pidgeot
Sand Attack is badass in Gen1, where there are not
many antidotes against accuracy reduction strategies.
Mirror Move might also help. And, of course, he can
learn Fly HM, which is both good for battle and useful
for transportation.

3. Rattatta/Raticate
Hyper Fang and Super Fang rule. Also, it can learn
several elemental attacks, which make it pretty
versatile.

4. Drowsee/Hypno
Psychic are so OP at Gen1 that you ought to include
at least one. You can find it after Vermillion and include
it in your team without too much grinding. Actually, i'd
prefer Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam, because it can heal
itself, but, unfortunately, it cannot fully evolve unless
you can somehow trade it and get it back.

5. Eevee/Jolteon
The only Gen1 pokemon that can super effectively attack
psychic pokemon (Pin Missile) without being weak against
them itself. Get it at Celadon, evolve it right away, go fight
the army of fishermen/birdmen at Silence Bridge and you
can make it strong in no time.

6. Growlithe/Arcanine
I can't imagine a pokemon team without the fire element.
Considering you can catch it right before going to Celadon
Gym, where it can easily gain huge amounts of EXP, it's
the best piece to complete your team.

Really good team but I'd drop Raticate. Attacks like Bubblebeam/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam are sort of wasted on it. They'be be better for someone like Clefable. I'd try someone like Rhydon instead for some defense.

My team has to be one of the best I've ever had as far as playing through Gen 1.

Venusaur
Mega Drain
Double Edge
Toxic
Leech Seed

Raichu
Submission
Body Slam
Thunderbolt
Thunder Wave

Mew First time I ever used a legendary but it's also the first time I ever did the Mew trick so I figured I'll use him :)
Fly
Psychic
Ice Beam
Soft Boiled

Dragonite
Surf
Fire Blast
Blizzard
Hyper Beam

Snorlax
Rock Slide
Body Slam
Earthquake
Strength :(

Lapras
Psychic
Surf
Ice Beam
Thunder

Where is Double Team? That attack is totally badass in Gen1.
