1st Gen Was the Rival sprite changed?

I was just playing Red version on my GBC and the rival sprite is him with his arms out at both sides of his body with his legs outstretched also. I was also playing some Red on my 3DS and noticed he had the sprite where he's doing the peace sign in a salute style. Does anyone know this difference or have an explanation as to why this is changed. And just in case it's relevant I'm in the US so these are those copies.
