Loving this so far! Good to see something so grand in scope with a story involved. Kudos.

(Also if you wouldn't mind me stealing that idea for Gym badges being links to Gym battles?)

I've had a busy few days unfortunately, but now I hope to be back on track. =D

Game Corner Pokémon are against the rules unfortunately, so I can't do that. There is however a very small chance that I can get Ponyta on Route 17. I probably jinxed my chances by mentioning it though. xD

And while Snorlax technically is allowed as per the wording of my rules, when I drafted them the intention was to also ban single encounter Pokémon(ie. Snorlax in Gen I, Sudowoodo and Lapras in Gen II, Volcarona in Gen V, etc.). Thus I'll most likely be honouring my original intentions. I think I'll be fine without Tubby anyway(I went and jinxed it again, didn't I? >< ).

And thanks for the feedback Beast_NVG! ^_^ Also no worries, steal away.

Chapter 15 - Trick and Treat

I was thrilled to be back in the open air after traversing the Rock Tunnel, and I could tell that my Pokémon were too. Ivanna in particular was anxious to get to the PokéCentre, just as I was to bring her there. Unfortunately there was no such centre at this end of the cave, meaning that we had to face a few more trainers as we neared the end of Route 10.

But reach the end we did, as we finally arrived at the outskirts of Lavender Town. By far the most noticeable structure in town was the Pokémon Tower, rising high into the sky over the otherwise quaint homes.

I was about to enter the PokéCentre when a little girl approached me.

Fairy_Tale_Girl.png

"Excuse me miss," she said, so innocent-looking. She was wearing a pink dress that looked like it must have went out of style years ago. "Do you believe in ghosts?"

The question surprised me. It's not exactly something that random people run up to ask, at least in my experience. "No," I finally replied, believing it to be the only reasonable answer.

"I see," the little girl said, obviously disappointed. "Then...that white hand on your shoulder...it's not really there, is it?"

"What?" I said, a little startled as I looked to my right shoulder. Nothing. I looked to my left. Also nothing. "What do you mean?" I said, turning back to the girl.

But...there was nothing.

"Hello, where'd you go?" I called out, trying to figure out where she had gone. "Is this some sort of game?"

But I didn't get an answer, nor did I ever see that little girl again.

I tried not to think of that experience as I returned to my normal routine of healing at the PokéCentre and buying/selling at the PokéMart. I added Aria to my party and ran as quickly as I could to Route 7 at the west end of town.

There were a number of trainers here as well, though they were easy to deal with thanks to my newly healed team. Squishy even grew stronger than ever when she learned a powerful new attack called Dragon Rage. And I thought she was strong before....

I also came across another patch of grass, in which I began hunting for new Pokémon. I wasn't expecting much after my last few captures, but I couldn't pass up the chance of adding a new comrade to my growing assortment of monsters.

I finally did encounter one, and it was only by a stroke of pure luck that I was able to capture her.

"Abra!"
"Cotton, use Sleep Powder!"
"Great ball, go!"

It all happened in a matter of just a few seconds. You see, wild Abra only know one move, and that is Teleport. Teleport immediately ends the battle, meaning I would no longer have a chance to catch the caster. Thus I only had two options, either throw a single poké ball and hope for the best, or launch a single Sleep Powder and hope for the best. I went with the latter, and after using the only Great Ball in my possession...success!

Abra.png

Sleeps 18 hours a day. If it senses danger, it will teleport itself to safety even as it sleeps.
Gwen the Abra, Level 15
-Teleport

As scared as I was to return, I made the trek back to Lavender Town where I retrieved my new Abra, Gwen, from the PC and immediately began using her in battles along Route 7. She had no attacks, but unlike Cotton, Squishy, and Puffy before her, she didn't have to wait long before her true power shone through.

Kadabra.png

Many odd things happen if this Pokémon is close by. For example, it makes clocks run backwards.
Gwen the Kadabra, Level 16

-Confusion

Gwen was already proving her worth, even considering the difference in level between her and most of my other team members. Damon still took over for some Poison-types however, though I doubt it was necessary.

Reaching the gates to Saffron City, I yet again had to take an underground tunnel to the other side. I assumed I crossed over the similar tunnel passing north to south, but I saw no sign of it. Why have two interconnecting tunnels and not have them interconnect? I thought to myself as I emerged at the other end onto Route 8.

There were no trainers here, but there was a patch of grass. I decided to try my luck again, though this time it didn't work the way I had hoped.

"Abra!"
"Cotton, use Sleep Powder!"

...unfortunately the Abra was faster this time, and Teleported away before Cotton could even get a move in. Ah well, at least I already caught one Abra, who had already evolved and was developing into quite the strong Pokémon.

With nothing left to do on the route, I continued west towards Celadon City. It was by far the largest city of the region I had been to, with skyscrapers sprawled out in one direction and a number of large businesses in the other. Though like always I healed at the PokéCentre and stocked up on items at the...

What kind of a PokéMart is this?

I was in the Celadon Department Store, which was so much more than a PokéMart. They had a TM shop, a Potion shop, a Vitamin shop, and even a shop where I could buy elemental stones! Though what peaked my interest the most was the poké ball section, where I was finally able to get my hands on some Great Balls! "I'll take twenty, please!" I said with a smile as I added them to my bag.

I walked out of that store thrilled over my new purchase, and hoping I would get a chance to try them out as soon as possible. And that opportunity arose when I found a tiny pond in the middle of town. No one said I could't, so I pulled out my Old Rod and...Oh, it's a bite!

Magikarp.png

Famous for being very unreliable. It can be found swimming in seas, lakes, rivers and shallow puddles.
Floppy the Magikarp, Level 5
-Splash

I then headed west of town to Route 16. There was a large sleeping Pokémon in my way, much like there had been on Route 11. Please don't let there be another tunnel to pass through to avoid this guy. I thought as I Cut through a nearby tree in order to make way to a patch of grass I had noticed further afield.

And then..."Doduo! Doduo!"

I jumped at the sound. Was I being attacked by two Pokémon at once? I soon realized that no, it was not two Pokémon, but rather one Pokémon...with two heads. It took a few of my Great Balls to capture them, but capture them I did. ^_^

Doduo.png

Its short wings make flying difficult. Instead, this Pokémon runs at high speed on developed legs.
Stooges the Doduo, Level 22
-Peck
-Growl

And with that I returned to Celadon City, which I was only yet beginning to explore.

Wow, thank you so much for this honour! ^_^ And I definitely intend to keep it up until the end. I just don't know if I can keep up with the pace I was going at last month. *sweatdrop*

Chapter 16 - The Face of Evil

Back in Celadon City, I decided stop by a restaurant and try out the local delicacies. I had found a place in the south end of town that wasn't too busy, so I went in to give them a try.

"Hello," I said, looking at the menu. "I would like to order-".

CRASH!

I stopped suddenly, startled. What had just happened? I followed the sound of the noise, noticing a man slumped over in the corner of the room, whose glass had fallen on the floor and shattered. He obviously had had way too much to drink, and was now suffering the consequences.

Gambler.png

"They took everything..." he muttered, apparently still partially conscious. "Team Rocket...a bunch of lousy, good for nothing sons of-"

"Don't pay him any attention, miss," the man I was about to order from told me. "Poor guy, he lost his life savings at the Rocket Game Corner today. Claims Team Rocket cheated him somehow."

"I see," I replied. "So Team Rocket runs the Game Corner?"

"No, I don't think so," he told me, somewhat nervously. "What'd give you the idea that the Rocket Game Corner is run by Team Rocket?"

I gave him a questioning look, trying to figure out if we was messing with me. He wasn't. "Just wondering is all," I said. "And I guess I won't be ordering anything either," I added, suddenly losing my appetite. "Thank you, bye!"

I got out of there as quickly as I could. That was way too weird, I thought as I made my way down the street. Just what is this Team Rocket anyway? I assumed they were some big corporation trying to re-brand themselves with up-and-coming Pokémon trainers, but now I wasn't so sure.

And that could have been the last I thought about the matter, as it wasn't really any of my business. My goal was to become a Pokémon Master, not to save the world. But...I just couldn't help it.

"Let's see what all that fuss was over," I finally said as I made my way to the Rocket Game Corner.

Once inside, I was amazed by the dazzling assortment of flashy lights and sounds,. The were a number of slot machines where people were seemingly mindlessly pulling cranks and levers while hoping for good fortune to come their way. It rarely did, but that didn't stop them from handing over their hard-earned cash in order to get another chance.

"Excuse me miss, would you like to play?" a lady at the front counter asked me. I politely declined. That was definitely not my reason for being there, as I had better things to spend my money on.

I explored a little more until I found an odd-looking man guarding a poster by the far wall. He seemed oddly similar to the Team Rocket member I faced on Route 24, leading me to believe that they were part of the same organization.

I soon realized that stealth was apparently not my thing, as the man locked eyes with me. "Hey, what are you looking at?"

"Your uniform," I replied. It was the only thing I could think of. "It's a Team Rocket uniform, right? What is your organization doing here?"

"None of your business, now scram!" he said. "Or will I have to force you out of here?!"

"This is a public place," I told him. "I have a right to-".

"Raticate, go!" he shouted, interrupting me. "Use Hyper Fang...on her!"

What?

Then suddenly..."Kadabra!"

I hadn't even sent Gwen out from her poké ball, but there she was anyway, likely sensing that she was needed. She appeared right between the Raticate and I, sending it flying back into its trainer with a Confusion attack.

"Oh no!" the Rocket exclaimed upon losing the battle. "I better tell the boss about this!" He then did something to the poster on the wall behind him before running off around a corner. I went to pursue, but...all I could find was an empty hall. Huh?

Then..."Kadabra!" It was Gwen, still out of her poké ball. She was back near the poster the guy had been messing with. Gwen used her psychic powers to peel the poster off the wall, revealing a button which I eventually decided to press. Why not?

I then looked back at the empty hall, but...it was no longer empty! There was a staircase now! "Something Magikarp-y is going on here," I whispered to Gwen as I recalled her into her poké ball. I then looked around to make sure nobody was watching, as I made my way down the stairs and into the basement.

What I saw were...boxes. Stacks and stacks of boxes, all filled with poké balls. There must have been hundreds, if not thousands. I walked over to a box and-.

"Hey! What are you doing here, twerp?!"

Jessie.png

It was Jessie, the Team Rocket member I had met back at Mt. Moon. Her partner James was with her too, and neither seemed too thrilled to see me.

"Prepare for trouble!"
"And make it double!"
"To protect the world from devasta-!"

"What is Team Rocket doing here?" I demanded, still not caring for their silly intros. "And why do you have all these poké balls?"

"LET US FINISH DARN IT!" James cried out. But I was already gone down a hallway. There was no point in asking them anyway, I thought as I investigated further. They're just lackeys. Nobody gives vital information to lackeys.

I encountered a few more Rockets during my search, none of which were too hard for Gwen(and sometimes Damon and Squishy) to handle. Some even squealed after being defeated, informing me that the poké balls were all filled with Pokémon that Team Rocket had stolen from patrons of their Game Corner. Some were swiped from the Pokémon Storage System after the Rockets had stolen their trainers' passwords, and some were seized-unlawfully, of course-from trainers who were unable to pay their debts to the casino.

All in all I was beginning to get a better idea of just what Team Rocket was. I was right about them being corporate thugs, but now I was beginning to see that it was even darker than that.

And they weren't only stealing people's Pokémon, I soon realized. They were trying to obtain technology that would help them to capture wild Pokémon en masse. The item I kept hearing about was called a Silph Scope, which could be used to see Ghost-type Pokémon, which are normally invisible. With it, Team Rocket could create a monopoly on the sale of Ghosts, or else just use it to be the sole owners of the type. =/

I eventually made my way to the lowest floor of the hideout(by using a Lift Key that one of the Rockets conveniently dropped). It was there that I met Giovanni, the head of the organization.

Giovanni.png

"I must say," he said in a cold, calculated manner. "I am impressed that you got here. You are either very brave, or very stupid, to make an enemy out of Team Rocket. And either way, you are naive in thinking that your actions will make any difference."

"We'll see about that," I said in response, trying to sounds like the brave warrior I clearly wasn't. What had I gotten myself into?!?! "Ivanna, it's your turn to shine now. I choose you!"

"Nidoqueen!" Ivanna roared as she appeared in the boardroom, smashing a desk in half with her Double Kick. Giovanni sent out Onix, who struggled to move in such a small enclosure. Ivanna and I were both relieved to have some room left over in which to breath, and in Ivanna's case, to fight. Onix's immobility ultimately proved to be his downfall, as he was soon subdued by a series of Double Kicks.

Rhyhorn was next, and Ivanna likewise took quick work of him, though not before losing a chunk of health to his Horn Attack.

"You fight well," Giovanni remarked, obviously surprised. "But it all ends now. Persian, finish her!"

The Persian materialized in the now-ravaged office, letting loose a deafening Growl. I held my ears in fear and in shock as I fell back against the wall. Ivanna was effected too, but she held her own, Double Kicking the Persian as she retaliated with a Bite. "Nidoqueen!" she cried out from the pain of the attack. She was still hanging in there though, and after one more Double Kick it was over.

"WHAT! This cannot be!" Giovanni exclaimed, obviously shocked by his graceless loss. For a split second I saw his face distort in a look of anger, followed by something I swear was a smile, before reverting to the cold, emotionless face that I had become accustomed to. "I see that you raise Pokémon with utmost care," he said at last. "A child like you would never understand what I hope to achieve. I shall step aside this time, but know that you have not seen the last of Team Rocket! I shall make my leave this time however, as our hideout has been discovered. I hope we meet again..."

I tried to reply, but...he was gone. I don't know how, but he had simply vanished into thin air. And in his place was...the Silph Scope!

I walked over and picked it up, adding it to my bag. At the very least Team Rocket would no longer have a monopoly on Ghost-types, as I now had the ability to see them as well. However...it was doubtful to be the only one they had, meaning that the Rockets were very likely going to proceed according to plan.

I gulped, not wanting to say what I was about to say. However I had started this, and now I was determined to finish it.

"Time to return to Lavender Town," I said.

Chapter 17 - Life and Death

Team Rocket was out to capture some Ghost-type Pokémon, and as much as I didn't like it, I knew that if I wanted to stop them I had to return to Lavender Town. It was the only place that even remotely reminded me of the supernatural.

And it was for that reason that I was reluctant to even show my face in town again. The memory of that little girl the other day still sent shivers down my-.

"Excuse me miss, do you believe in ghosts?"

Fairy_Tale_Girl.png

And the shivers were back.

I froze, as my face turned pale with fright. I was simultaneously wanting to know the source of the voice and wanting to be anywhere but there. However my curiosity finally won out and I turned to face the little girl, the same one as the other day, wearing the same long-out-of-style dress.

Her large yellow eyes were staring at me intently, until I realized that she was waiting for an answer. What did I say last time?, I thought before remembering that I had said no. "Yes," is what I said this time, in the hope that the outcome would be different.

"I see," she responded. She was neither disappointed nor pleased, just...content with my having answered. "So there are believers."

She then began to laugh and giggle as she started running towards the Pokémon Tower at the far end of town. "She believes! She believes!" she began to cheer, much more giddily than a moment ago. She then turned back and waved her hand, motioning for me to follow her. "Come, let's play in the tower!"

In the Pokémon Tower? I thought with a questioning look. Isn't that the final resting place for departed Pokémon? And she wants to...play? O_o

"We shouldn't be playing in there," I told her, convinced that she didn't understand the gravity of the situation. "The Pokémon Tower is for-."

I stopped myself, realizing that the little girl was no longer there. What the...? Could she have already made it inside?

I decided to check, making my way into the lobby of the Pokémon Tower. There were a number of people there, mourning their recently passed Pokémon, but the little girl I had met was not among them.

However, a certain rival of mine was.

Gary.png

"Hey you!" he called out, once again refusing to call me by name. "What're you doing here? You're Pokémon aren't dead, are they?"

"Hello to you to, Gary," I said, trying to be as nice as possible so that he may take the hint. "No, I was just looking for someone. Have you seen-."

"Good," he interrupted. "I'd like to challenge you again. By the time I beat you, perhaps you will have a reason to be here!"

Did he just threaten to kill my Pokémon? I thought, astonished and amazed, and finally determined. "This. Is. On. Squishy, I choose you!"

The mourners didn't seem to mind as a fully grown Gyarados appeared in their midst. Gary sent out Fearow, who attempted to intimidate Squishy by Growling, however it did not seem to have any effect on her Dragon Rage, which took quick care of the bird.

Shellder was next, followed by Vulpix and finally Eevee, all of which fell quickly to Squishy's Dragon Rage. I had won! And moreover, it was my most decisive victory against Gary yet! ^_^

"You stinker!" he shouted at me, obviously annoyed at losing to me once again. However his choice of words were rather...unusual, albeit predictable given our history. At least I hoped that was all it was; I had just raced straight there from Celadon City, and...Nah, that can't be it, I thought as I recalled Squishy, thanking her for a job well done.

"Okay, now this is the last time I lose to you!" he then said. "I've been studying how Pokémon types work, and I'll soon have the strongest team imaginable. Just you wait!"

He then made his leave. I turned and ran for the staircase as fast as I could, because I knew what was com-.

"Smell ya later!"

Not again! I was almost out of earshot that time too! >_<

Anyway I continued up the tower, wondering where the little girl had gone. Then suddenly..."Oooooooooooooooo....."

Ghost.png

"AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!" I cried out, way louder than I would like to admit. But...but...THERE WAS A GHOST!!! RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!

I was about to run away in panic when I heard a beeping sound coming from my bag. That's right! I thought. The Silph Scope! I quickly pulled it out and aimed it at the ghost. And slowly, oh so slowly, it began to change shape. Not that it was transforming into something else, but rather that I was seeing its true form.

And its true form was...the little girl from before! "Save us," she said when she was fully visible to me. I realized that the Scope was also making sense of her speech, which had only been a series of frightening "Oooo"'s not moments earlier.

"Save us," she said again. "People have trespassed on our graves...bad people. Please...send the bad people away..."

"The bad people?" I repeated her words. I didn't have to ask, as I already knew who she was referring to. "Team Rocket. They're here, aren't they?"

But the little girl was gone, and in her place there was a Pokémon which had likely been her true identity all along. Her human form was likely that of a former life, used to get my attention so that I could..."save" them.

"Gastly!" she cried, offering her power to aid my own on the journey ahead. And it was an offer I did not refuse.

Gastly.png

Said to appear in decrepit, deserted buildings. It has no real shape as it appears to be made of a gas.

-Night Shade

We began our long journey to the top of the tower. I quickly realized that Gwen was a perfect choice to lead the pack this time, as not only were her Confusions fast and super-effective against the many more Gastly that I was to encounter, but their Ghost-type attacks proved ineffective against her whatsoever(which the peculiar exception of Night Shade).

There were a number of trainers to face as well, all Channelers with Gastly of their own. Some even had Haunter, Gastly's evolved form. But even they fell to Gwen's Confusion, and later her Psybeam, which she learned two thirds of the way through,

And then at long last, we encountered the last Pokémon of the climb. "Marowak!"

Marowak.jpg

She was critically wounded, and would not make it through the night. There was nothing I could do but comfort her, and even that was a struggle as she refused to let me get close. I eventually realized that her wounds had not been from battling Pokémon, but rather from fighting people, likely Team Rocket and their unlawful methods.

"Well, well, well," I could then hear someone from higher up saying with a laugh. "Looks like the twerp is at it again."

Team Rocket!

Jessie.png

"Prepare for trou-."

"Don't even try," I said, "What have you done to this poor Pokémon?!"

"Oh that?" Jessie said, apparently amused at my seriousness. "She was trying to protect a bunch of valuable Cubone babies...her children, I suppose. Not that it matters. They're the property of Team Rocket now!"

"Marowak!" The Marowak swiped at the Rockets with her Bone Club, but it was no use. She was already far too weak.

Then..."Gastly!" Shadow appeared literally from out of nowhere. right between Marowak and the Rockets. I now knew that this was what had been causing her so much distress, and why she had went through such effort in order to get my help.

And that effort was paying off now, as I could see her glowing with what I first thought was rage, but soon turned out to be something much more powerful. Shadow was evolving!

Haunter.png

By licking, it saps the victim's life. It causes shaking that won't stop until the victim's demise.
Shadow the Haunter, Level 26
-Lick
-Confuse Ray
-Night Shade

"Haunter!" Shadow growled as it became the Rockets' turn to cry out in horror.

"Shadow, use Night Shade!" I called out. But she didn't need to wait for me.

"Team Rocket's blasting off again!" Jessie and James yelled out in unison as they were sent blasting out of the side of the tower. For a moment I wondered if they'd be alright, but I soon got over it.

And now comes the hard part, I thought, as Shadow and I turned to Marowak. She was still hanging on, but there were only so many things one could get over, and this was not one of them.

We stayed there with her until the end. And then, we continued on our way.

Chapter 18 - Preparations

I recalled Shadow and continued to the top of the tower. Team Rocket was probably gone, but I wanted to know for sure. And as I reached the higher level I confirmed it, only finding one man who clearly did not have a wicked bone in his body.

Fuji.png

"Hello." he said, noticing me. "Are you the one who handled Team Rocket."

I nodded. "But I didn't come soon enough. Marowak..."

"I think Marowak's soul has gone to the afterlife," he told me. "I came here to calm the soul of Cubone's mother."

"Cubone," I repeated the name of the Pokémon he mentioned. "Team Rocket said that they had captured them all."

"Oh no, that is not so," the man replied with a smile. "I was able to rescue them all. However I must thank you for your concern! Please, come with me to my home at the foot of this tower!"

I agreed, and in what seemed like magic we were back on ground level and standing outside a private home at the foot of the Pokémon Tower. What just happened? I thought. I really have to get out of this city ASAP.

I tried not to think about it as I followed the man, whom I now knew as Mr. Fuji, into his home. But it looked more like a Pokémon Daycare then a home, with a number of various Pokémon wandering about. But the ones I noticed in particular were a number of shy Cubone in the corner.

One of them noticed Mr, Fuji entering, and his demeanor changed in an instant. "Cubone!" it cheered as it ran to the man's side. Mr. Fuji lifted the Pokémon up and gave it a huge hug before turning to face me.

"This is the Lavender Volunteer Pokémon house," he said. "We take care of abandoned and orphaned Pokémon here."

"That is very admirable of you," I replied, obviously impressed. "You must love Pokémon very much."

He nodded. "And I can tell that you do as well. Which is why I would like you to have this."

Pok_Flute.png

It was a small flute. "Thank you," I said. "But I do not play."

"Nonsense," he said. "Everyone can play a flute! Especially that one. All you have to do is press that button there and it will play, springing all sleeping Pokémon awake!"

"All sleeping Pokémon?" I repeated his words, while thinking back to a little problem I had back on Route 11....

"Yes," was Mr Fuji's response. "I am sure of it."

"Well in that case I will accept your gracious gift," I said, bowing my head as I added the flute to my bag. "Thank you so much."

We said our goodbyes and I made my way out of the city. Lavender Town had given me the creeps when I first found myself there, but now the place was beginning to grow on me. Nonetheless I had to continue my journey, and that required me to return to Celadon. There was a gym there that I had yet to challenge, ^_^

Once at the PokéCentre I decided to take a look at my team members and see who needed some extra training before I went further. Quite a few did in fact, especially the two Nidoran I had caught on the way to Rock Tunnel and the Zubat I had captured from within in. And so I added them to my team and went to Route 8 to do some training.

However I trained there for about thirty seconds, deciding to leave after realizing that I couldn't get much experience from Teleporting Abra and Whirlwinding Pidgey and Pidgeotto. Thus I moved instead to Route 16.

Loki and Odin both grew somewhat, as did Puffy and Pip. The Stooges were at first trying to attack each other rather than their opponents, but after I finally convinced the two work together, they too got a few wins under their feathers. Toxica and Elena grew exceptionally well also, with the former learning Poisonpowder and the latter Confuse Ray. Floppy grew a little bit, but not as much of the others, and definitely not nearly as much as his big sister Squishy. As for my two Nidoran....

Now my whim of having a team of three Nidoqueen was one step closer to reality! If only I had thought about the possibility earlier, as I could have named them Natalie, Emily, and Martie; however Ivanna, Charli, and Xena would make for a good girl group as well. ;)

Anyway, Squishy and Shadow saw some battles as well, especially when helping their less experienced friends. I eventually started using Damon for this purpose as well, when he got the surprise of his life as Elena, the little Zubat he had previously paid no attention to, went and evolved.

"Golbat!" Damon shrieked at the newly evolved Elena. It was love at first sight...for him at least.

"Golbat?" Elena said, confused. What was going on? And why was Damon so...weird all of a sudden? "Golbat!" she cried again, voluntarily going back into her poké ball as Damon sat there looking disappointed.

"There there," I said, patting him on the head. "You can't expect all the ladies to fall, er...wings over fangs for you."

He felt a bit better, but also returned to his poké ball to sulk for a little bit. Meanwhile I worked on some finishing touches for my other Pokémon while finalizing my team for the upcoming gym battle. I knew I'd be facing a Grass-type leader this time, so Claws was definitely out of the running.

However this lovesick Golbat was just who I needed to do the job, so I hoped he was up to the challenge.

Spoiler:

I'll definitely keep one Nidorina with the intention of teaching her Bite if she ever levels up that far, and I might eventually evolve the other into Nidoqueen before leveling her up to learn Body Slam. Though I doubt I'll use either of them seriously, unless Arceus forbid Ivanna doesn't make it to the end of the game. =/

And I'll be going against Erika without a Fire-type! However I do have a team full of Poison-types, which should prove useful defensively. I also hope the Stooges do well, as they're my only living Pokémon with a Flying-type move. And when all else fails I'll just sweep with Gwen. =3

I really enjoy reading your run, and even though the challenge is completely different, it was you who inspired me to do a more story focused Log. Please keep up your great work.

Thank you so much Kimborelli! I've started reading your own challenge and it looks really interestiing. Good luck with your own journey. ^_^

Chapter 19 - Celadon City Gym Battle

At long last, I made my way to Celadon City Gym. It was in the south of town, further than I had ever ventured before. I had thought I was lost at first, as I appeared to be venturing into a forest rather than a continuation of the city. Another Cut tree blocked my path as well, though thankfully that was no longer a problem.

I eventually arrived at a greenhouse located in a heavily wooded area. There were number of girls there tending to flowers. At first I thought I was in the wrong place, but then I noticed the sign out front: "Celadon City Pok?mon Gym. Leader Erika, the Nature-Loving Princess."

It wasn't long before one of the girls, a Beauty, noticed me. "Hey there! Are you perhaps our new apprentice trainer?"

I shook my head. "I am looking for the Celadon City Gym," I said. "I wish to challenge the leader."

"I see," she said, her expression changing instantly from cheerful to serious. "Well, before you can even get close to Erika, you must battle each of us," she continued, as the other girls all began to come forward.

"You mustn't underestimate girl power!" shouted a Cool Trainer. Huh? Couldn't she tell that I was a girl myself?

"Neither should you," I responded, not knowing what else to say. I then turned to my current challenger. "Stooges, I choose you!"

The Doduo soon materialized from their pok? ball, as the Beauty sent out her Bellsprout. "Stooges, use Peck!" It was super-effective! The Bellsprout went down in a single hit!

The Beauty's next Pok?mon was a Weepinbell, the evolved form of Bellsprout that looked considerably more dangerous. I decided to keep Stooges in play and get them to land another Peck attack. They did, severely wounding the Pok?mon, however they failed to knock it out completely. Which was unfortunate because...

"Weepinbell, use Poisonpowder!"

It happened too fast, so I was unable to call in Damon in time. The Weepinbell released a series of purple spores from within its leaves, softly blowing them in Stooges' direction. I could immediately tell that they had hit their mark; Stooges was poisoned. =/

They were still able to knock out the Weepinbell on the next hit, but after that I decided to take the long trek back to the Pok?Centre before going further. Upon my return I challenged the rest of the gym's junior trainers, using Stooges against Bellsprout and Oddish, and switching to Damon against their evolved forms in order to avoid being poisoned again.

I had just defeated the last of them, a Beauty with an Exeggcute, when I heard someone step out of the greenhouse.

"My my, lovely weather isn't it?"

Erika.png

It was obviously the gym leader, Erika. I could tell by the fact that her junior trainers immediately stopped paying attention to my Pok?mon and I and began to hover around their queen-or rather princess, as the sign read. I didn't know if she was actually royalty or if it was just a nickname, but I could already tell that she played the part quite well. Every word that she spoke, and every movement was made so elegantly.

"Lady Erika!" the Beauty who had first battled me exclaimed. "I am so sorry if we interrupted your precious rest. We were battling this trainer here. She wishes to challenge our gym."

"I see," Erika said, before turning to face me. "And what is your name, young lady?"

I decided to play the part. "My name is Jessica, and I come from Pallet Town," I replied with a curtsey. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Princess Erika. It would bring me great honour if you would accept my challenge to a Pok?mon gym battle."

"My, what manners this one has," Erika remarked. "My girls would learn a lot from you. Might you consider staying around and joining our group?"

I shook my head. "I must regretfully decline, as I would very much like to continue my Pok?mon journey."

"That is a shame, but I understand," Erika said, grasping a pok? ball in her hand. "And to continue on your quest you must challenge this gym of mine, yes? Very well, I will battle you. However, I shall not lose. Tangela, go!"

Tangela was a ball of living vines, and a Pok?mon I had yet to encounter before. I decided to send Damon out against it, as he had resistances to both Grass- and Poison-type attacks, both of which seemed popular among the Pok?mon of this gym.

"Damon, use Confuse Ray!" I shouted, as the Golbat sent a dizzying flash of light in the Tangela's direction. Direct hit! Tangela attempted to strike back with his vines, but he stumbled and hurt himself instead. The confusion was working!

"Now use Leech Life!" Damon was quick to do just that, as he stuck his fangs into the unsuspecting Tangela, sucking his life energy away, It was super-effective!

This series of events happened a few more times until Tangela finally broke out of confusion. He then shot his vines through the air and grasped Damon within them, pulling him closer with a speed-lowering Constrict, which was immediately followed with a Bind.

"Damon, return!" I called out. Even though I thought he could withstand further damage from Bind, I decided to keep him as healthy as possible for the stronger Pok?mon that were likely to come. And more importantly, I knew of a much easier method to deal with Normal-type moves like Construct and Bind. "Shadow, your turn!"

The Haunter was now out of her pok? ball, causing several of the other girls to cry out in horror. Erika too seemed quite shocked. "I must say I am impressed with your collection of Pok?mon so far. I would never collect such unattractive Pok?mon."

But Tangela was the most scared by Shadow, who was now in a mad rage after being told she was unattractive. "Haaaaaauunter," she whispered slowly, as Tangela froze, not knowing what to do. His Binds and Constricts were passing through Shadow with no effect whatsoever. And then...it was over. Tangela succumbed to Night Shade, and was no longer able to fight.

"Tangela, return!" Erika shouted, as Tangela disappeared in a flash of red light. "Go, Weepinbell!"

Another Weepinbell, eh? I thought. "In that case, Damon, I choose you!"

Much to the delight of Erika and her trainers, Shadow went back into her pok? ball as Damon returned to the field. And just as he had with the Tangela, he sunk his teeth into the poor Weepinbell, sucking its life energy out with even more power than before. It wasn't a knock-out, as Weepinbell was able to jump back and launch a not-very-effective Acid attack, however Damon lost little health from it, and in any case it was restored from the subsequent Leech Life, which was a knock-out.

Erika was down to her last Pok?mon now, a Gloom. And it seemed a lot stronger than any of the others I had faced until now.

Gloom.png

I soon found out why. "Gloom, use Petal Dance!"

A sweet aroma began to fill the arena as the Gloom began to...well, dance. As she did, large pink petals began to fly out in every which direction. Damon was struck by a number of these, and even though he was doubly resistant to it he lost a considerable chunk of his health.

Thankfully he could get it back. He flew high over his opponent, watching her dance with a keen interest. Though it wasn't because he was fond of the arts(quite the opposite in fact); rather, he was trying to predict her movements so that he could find the perfect time to strike.

And...there it was! Damon plunged down towards the Gloom, sinking his fangs into yet another of Erika's Pok?mon. Much of the damage dealt from the Petal Dance was now recovered, and Damon could hold on to fight some more.

As it turned out the Petal Dance was far from over, and Gloom continued her ritual, not even waiting for her trainer to tell her to use it again. However this time Damon knew what to expect: first get hit, then wait to strike, and...gotcha!

This happened three times in total. Though after the last Petal Dance hit Gloom stopped her dance, falling to the ground as her eyes became the ones dancing instead, She was confused! But it didn't matter, as before she could even think of attacking...gotcha again!

Gloom was down, and I had won the battle! ^_^

"Oh!" Erika exclaimed, surprised at her own loss. "You are remarkably strong, much more so than I ever could have imagined, I now understand why you refused to stay here and train with us. I must now confer to you this Rainbow Badge."

Thunder_Badge.png

I took the badge in my hand, and added it to my collection. I was now halfway through the Kanto League!

"Thank you," I said. "It was an honour to-."

"Erika, he's back!"

I turned to the Beauty, shocked by her sudden outburst. What did she mean? Who was back?

I followed her gaze to the bushes just outside the gym. There I could see an older man, staring at us with a rather creepy-looking expression on his face. Had he been watching us the entire time?

"This gym is great!" I heard him say. "It's full of women!"

"It's a pervert!" the Beauty cried out. "Let's get him!"

"Wait," I said, turning to Erika with a smile. "Perhaps I can join your gym after all, if only for a moment?"

Erika nodded, apparently guessing what I had in mind.

"Shadow, let's give this guy the fright of his life," I whispered into her pok? ball as I neared the man in the bushes.

As he showed his face once again, he realized he was now face-to-face with Shadow. And Shadow was not too pleased with him. "Haaaaaauunter...." she whispered, sending shivers down the man's spine. "Haaaaaaauunter..."

"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!" the man screamed, before running away at a speed I didn't realize was even possible.

"I don't think you have to worry about him anymore," I said with a laugh. Everyone else soon joined in, including Haunter, who was quite pleased with herself. She was also ecstatic over the girls seemingly not being afraid of her anymore.

We talked a little longer about various things, and eventually I took my leave. The girls wished me luck during the remainder of my gym battles, saying that they'll be cheering for me at the Pok?mon League.

I thanked them once again and set off on the next chapter of my journey.

So I finally get time and read your log.

It's really great retelling of the game and got me pretty hooked up.

Also, you named your Nidoqueen same as I always name my Nidoqueen :D

I'm glad to hear that you like it Janp. :) And that's a cool coincidence about the Nidoqueen!

As for Shadow and Gwen, I think I am going to copy what Knost did in his challenge and wait until they're at level 40. This won't be an official rule however, so further down the line I might decide to evolve others earlier, especially if movesets are effected.

Chapter 20 - The Long Way

I returned to the Pok?Centre to heal my Pok?mon and mix up my team. While there, I went to the Town Map to determine where my adventure would take me next.

I actually had three options of places to travel next. The closest of course was Saffron City, which I had crossed beneath several different times already. I knew there had to be some way past the guards, but for the moment I was stumped.

I could also go to Fuchsia City in the south, via one of two paths. The first was a nearly direct path from Celadon City, which was by the far the quickest. And the second was a winding road that connected to both Lavender Town and Vermilion City in the east before eventually reaching Fuchsia.

I eventually decided on the latter path, for two reasons: one, that there seemed to be more opportunities for adding new Pok?mon to my team, and two, it would likely have a lot of trainers there to give my current Pok?mon some much needed experience.

And so I was off! I crossed under Saffron City once more before returning to Lavender Town, at which point I took the southern exit to Route 12. It definitely seemed to be the most scenic route, as it consisted of a boardwalk built over a large patch of water.

"Looks like I'll be catching another Magikarp again," I muttered to myself as I made my way down the route. There were a number of Fishermen on the route who challenged me to battles. I used Stooges against most of them, still trying to get their strength to match that of the rest of the team. The two heads were learning to work together more than in the past, though there was still the occasional moment where their Pecks would be aimed at each other instead of their opponents.

With all the Fishermen defeated, I eventually found myself at an impasse. There was a large sleeping Pok?mon in my way!

"Snor...lax...Snor...lax...zzzzzzzz"

Snorlax.png

It didn't take me long to realize that it was the same Pok?mon that forced me to travel through the Rock Tunnel earlier, as I could just barely make out Route 11 on the other side.

Great, I thought, obviously not amused. What am I supposed to do now?

I sat there for longer than I'd like to admit before realizing that I actually had a means of waking the huge creature up. The Pok? Flute!

I pulled the item out of my bag, and looked at it curiously. I had never played an instrument before, and I nervously thinking not only about what would happen if it didn't work, but also what would happen if it did work.

But there was no point in debating it any longer. I pulled the flute to my lips, and began to play. Almost immediately a soothing, charming melody began to come from the instrument. Is this really me doing this? I thought, amazed at how beautiful it sounded.

I wasn't the only one who noticed. "Snorlax!"

It worked! He's awake! "Shadow, I choose you!" I shouted, just in time to jump out of the way as the Snorlax swatted at my previous position.

"Haunter," Shadow chuckled as the Snorlax's grumpy rage passed right through her. She then cast a Night Shade on the Pok?mon, barely leaving a scratch on his monstrous bulk.

This happened a few more times before the Snorlax slumped over and went back to sleep. Immediately all of Shadow's work weakening was for naught, as her opponent was once again back to full health.

"Keep it up," I said as Shadow continued to use Night Shade on the sleeping behemoth. It woke again, causing Shadow and I to fear more of the same.

Then..."Haunter!" Shadow unleashed a new attack, as a purple aura swirled around her opponent. She was using Hypnosis! The Snorlax fell asleep once again, though this time the restoration of health did not accompany it. And this allowed Shadow to slowly but surely whittle down his health.

"Snorlax!" he called out, no longer able to battle. He reluctantly got up and began to leave, likely heading back to his habitat high up in the mountains where he would no longer be disturbed.

As for me...I could now continue on my way!

I traveled further down Route 12, battling several more Fisherman along the way. One of them did not want to battle however, and just wanted to talk.

"Hey miss, do you like to fish?"

"Yes," I said, nodding. I had a feeling I knew where this was going.

"Wonderful!" he said, obviously delighted. "Take this," he continued, handing me the rod I was expecting.

"That's a Super Rod," he said. "You can catch many more Pok?mon with that than you could with an Old Rod."

"Really?" I said. Now it was my turn to be delighted!

I decided to give it a shot to see if his words were accurate. I cast a line right there, and waited for a Pok?mon to...Oh! It's a bite!

And...it wasn't a Magikarp!

"Seadra!"

It was a Seadra, the evolved form of Horsea. It was obviously a Water-type, but I had nothing to defend against said type so I sent out Shadow. "Shadow, use Hypnosis, then follow up with Night Shade!" She did as I asked, and I followed up with a series of Great Balls. The first one...miss! The second one...miss! The third one...success!

With the battle over I sat down at the edge of the pier. Phew, that was tough! I thought. That was my most difficult capture yet. I originally had my doubts, but now I was glad that I had taken this route after all.

After a few minutes of sitting there I regained my composure and continued down the path. It soon passed back onto dry land as I found myself on Route 13. The Fishermen were now gone, and in their place were Bird Catchers. I still used Stooges against them, though more often than not I had to switch to Squishy to finish off some of the stronger foes.

I then found a patch of grass and decided to search for yet another new teammate. And it didn't take long before I had finally captured my first Grass-type of the journey. Though unfortunately its Grass-type attacks were already long forgotten.

I continued to battle the Bird Catchers on the route, and eventually I no longer needed Squishy's help at all as Stooges was holding on. This was especially so once they learned Drill Peck, after which they were knocking out anything that came across them in a single hit each. It didn't take much more of that before they got even stronger still, as third head soon came to join in on the fun.

At this point I switched to leaving Puffy in the lead, as Stooges was already well on their way to becoming one of my main battlers. I thought Puffy had that potential as well, so I decided to see how she could handle the trainers of the route, And the answer was...no. =/ She at least could participate, albeit momentarily, which is what I let her do as we continued on our way.

We were now on Route 14 and at another patch of grass. I decided to have another go at catching a Pok?mon. I put Shadow in the lead and waited for a Pok?mon to appear. It did, and it only took a moment before I had captured it and had it sent to the PC.

There were a number of Bikers around now, though I found they were rather easy to handle once I realized that they all used Poison-types, namely Grimer and Koffing. All I had to do was use Claws, who was glad to be battling again after a long time in the PC, and every Grimer and every Koffing could each be defeated with a single Dig.

On to Route 15 now, where the Bikers, while still present, were now accompanied by Junior Trainers, including a number using Grass-types. This now called for Damon's attention, as in the Celadon Gym he could both suck up their poison and their health in general with his Leech Life attack.

And I of course also found another patch of grass, wherein I found another Grass-type.

I battled the few Junior Trainers who were remaining on the route before reaching the gatehouse that would bring me to Fuchsia City. I didn't know what adventures awaited me on the other side, but I was more than eager to find out.

In case anyone's wondering, the *real* reason why I took the eastern path to Fuchsia is because I want the Super Rod with me whenever I hit the bike trail. ^_^

If you intend to do any grinding, I recommend the patch of grass on Cycling road where Ponyta are common. Ponyta, Fearow and an occasional Dodrio all yield over 600 xp per wild fight(with Doduo's giving 356 to 384). It leads to quick leveling if you're persistent enough, although Grass and Bug types have a harder time due to their weakness to both Flying and Fire. So far a good read, keep it up :). Maybe you will get lucky in Safari Zone and fish a Dratini(and perhaps catch it).

I'm going to try to use Team Rocket for grinding, though they may not be enough. Route 17 is a god suggestion for training though, and I may try it if the Rockets don't give me enough experience. I've also been eyeing that patch for Ponyta, though as I said earlier there's not a very high chance that I'll get one.

As for the Safari Zone, that is already proving to be a dilemma for me. From looking at appearance charts, I see that I must choose between a 50% chance of getting another member of the Nidoran family in the grass, or a 70% chance of getting another Magikarp with the Super Rod. And of course I know from past experience that Dratini love to flee, so I'm leaning towards taking my chances in the grass and hoping that I get either Exeggcute, Paras, or Cubone.

Don't forget Scyther, Pinsir, Tauros, Rhyhorn and if your lucky Chansey and Tangela. I would throw Kangaskhan in there too but you pretty much have one Safari Ball chance at catching it. Also while Dratini love to run, the darn area is purely based on luck and there are multiple zones that I think qualify as a new area. I've caught Pokemon with 1 Safari Ball while others take me like 100 and multiple run-ins. Just try and fish in each new area and hope for a Dratini.

I left out Pinsir, Scyther, Chansey, and the rest because I was actually hoping that I wouldn't encounter them due to their proneness to fleeing. And I'm considering the entirety of the Safari Zone as one area, so I only had one chance to catch one Pok?mon. And well...you'll find out how that turned out in a moment. xD

And thank you for your post Living Arrow! I'm glad to hear that you like it, and I wish you the best in your upcoming journey. :)

Chapter 21 - Like a Red Rag

Upon passing through the gatehouse, I could see the welcoming board to Fuchsia City. "Behold, it's Passion Pink!" the sign read, I stood there confused, and for a moment I even thought that everything around me had pink highlights. It must be my imagination, I thought as I headed to the Pok?Centre.

As per tradition, I both healed and switched up my Pok?mon team at the Pok?Centre and stocked up on balls at the Pok?Mart. However this time I passed over even the Great Balls, as I found they had Ultra Balls in stock. I took twenty.

I continued to explore the city until I came across a small pond. And by the pond their was a Fisherman.

"Hello there miss," he said upon noticing me. "Do you like to-."

"Yes, I love to fish," I said before he could finish. I had had this conversation twice already, and it was getting rather old.

However what wasn't Old was the rod. Nor was it Super. It was the in-between rod, the "Good" Rod.

They seriously need to come up with better names for these things, I thought as I accepted the rod and thanked the man. I then cast a line right then and looking, anxious to see what kind of new Pok?mon I would be encountering. I waited, and waited, and...Oh! It's a bite!

Just as I expected, it was neither another Magikarp nor an already strong Pok?mon like Posiedon. Instead, it was a Poliwag! It tried blowing some Bubbles at Shadow, but they barely did a thing. I threw a Pok? Ball and...it was caught! ^_^

I explored the city a little more, soon arriving at the beach on Route 19. There were a pair of male Swimmers there who challenged me to battles, and I obliged, taking out all of their Pok?mon with Stooges and Shadow.

I looked out the sea, and at all the people swimming with their Pok?mon. It looked like fun, but I had something else in mind for myself. I pulled out my Super Rod this time, fishing right there on the crowded beach. It must have looked silly in retrospect, but I didn't mind. I was a Pok?mon trainer after all, and this is what Pok?mon trainers do. If only...Oh, a bite!

I pulled the rod with a little too much force than I needed, falling back as a small jellyfish Pok?mon landed on the sand in front of me. Shadow put it to sleep and I threw one of my new Ultra Balls, and...success!

Not ready or able to continue any further by sea, I altered course and headed north. It was then that I remembered what Fuchsia City was most known for: the Safari Zone! There were a number of Pok?mon enclosures just behind the Pok?Mart I was at earlier. I decided that I would take a moment to check them out.

There were a number of extremely rare Pok?mon there to see, including Lapras, a large sea-dwelling creature that was capable of ferrying people across the water. Next to it was a Kabuto exhibit, apparently showcasing the long-extinct Kabuto which had recently been brought back to live thanks to modern bio-technology. There was also a Chansey, which I had only ever seen at the Pok?Centre assisting the staff there. They lived in the wild as well however, though they were extremely rare, which is likely how their name came to be.

I looked at a few more exhibits, before encountering an old man outside the Kangaskhan enclosure. He looked right at me, and shouted something incomprehensible at me. What is he going on about? I thought as he continued to stand there looking at me, apparently waiting for me to give a response.

"Umm...No?" I finally said, thinking it was a good enough a reply.

He uttered a few more garbled words before going on his way. I let out a huge sigh of relief as I continued on my way.

I soon reached the gates of the Safari Zone, a gigantic Pok?mon preserve filled with Pok?mon that were unobtainable anywhere else in Kanto! And what's more, they currently had a promotion where not only could you catch any Pok?mon that you encountered in the park, but if you went far enough into the preserve, there was a secret house wherein the first person to reach it would receive a "fabulous prize."

You don't have to ask me that twice, I thought as I walked up to the front desk. "Excuse me," I said as I got one of the park employee's attention. "Please take my money!"

He did, and I took my first steps into the park. This is it, I thought, obviously a little excited. I have one, and only one shot at catching a rare new Pok?mon for my team. I mustn't blow it.

I stood there for a moment, admiring my surroundings. The park was even bigger than I had imagined! I could see a herd of Rhyhorn grazing in one area, a family of Nidoran and Nidorina in another, and even what I swore was a Scyther sunbathing in the distance. Any of these Pok?mon could be the one, I thought, as I made my way into the long grass, awaiting one of the most exciting encounters of my journey thus far.

Though the Pok?mon I ultimately came across was not as impressed,

"Tauros!"

Tauros.png

It was a Tauros! He stood there and growled, not too happy that I had interrupted his grazing. I could feel myself begin to sweat as I anticipated the worst. I was not allowed to bring my partner Pok?mon with me, so I was facing the Tauros all by myself. I was beginning to wonder just how many people have been killed by wild Pok?mon on the preserve before I realized I still had one tool at my disposal.

The Tauros growled even louder now as he saw the Safari Ball appear from within my bag. He lowered his head and began to charge...at me! I threw the ball just seconds before what likely would have been my death, as the Tauros disappeared in a flash of light.

The ball rolled once. It rolled twice. It...broke! Tauros reappeared and ran off into the sunset.

I collapsed onto the ground, both from the shock of my near death experience, and from the disappointment of losing my one chance of getting a Pok?mon in the Safari Zone. This world is way too intense, I thought as I got up and ran to the nearest safe house.

Once inside, I quickly closed the door behind me and let out a sigh of relief. At last, I was safe. No more surprise encounters with-.

Suddenly I was blinded by a series of flashing lights. What was happening? Had a wild Pok?mon gotten inside the safe house?! I didn't know if I could handle another-.

"Congratulations, you are the first person to have reached the secret house!" I could hear a man saying. "You are our grand prize winner!"

"Eh...Ehhhh?"

I could hardly believe that I had won, especially given the fact that I had forgotten all about it during my run in with the Tauros. "What do I win?" I asked, curious. Perhaps it would be something to reassure me, or at least take my mind away from, my abysmal failure from earlier.

I looked to the man, who was holding the t-shirt that was apparently my prize. It was bright red, with the words "I survived the Safari Zone" written on it. And in addition to the words there was the image of a Pok?mon's head. And that Pok?mon was...Tauros! =O

At first I was frightened, and then angry, but eventually I just couldn't help but laugh.

"Hahahahahaha!" I went on, leaving the safari staff standing there with bewildered expressions. "Thank you," I said, taking the t-shirt. "Thank you so much. Hahahahaha!"

A few moments later I was back in Fuchsia City, not knowing how to feel about my most recent adventure but now more determined than ever to carry on.

Spoiler:

That's right, I blew it. No worries though, as I already have an excellent team of Pok?mon by my side. ^^

I did get two cool new Water-types though. I wasn't hoping either way for Poliwag or Goldeen, but I was however rooting for Staryu over Tentacool. Oh well! xD

If you fish at Seafoam Island(inside mind you) or at Cinnabar Island, you ought to snag a Staryu(because I know you love its Psychic Evolved form). Not a bad run but I'm sure you grabbed the Gold Teeth while in Safari Zone for Strength(you'll need it to advance). Question is, who get's Strength and more importantly Surf? Also, isn't ground and fishing encounters separate or you count them as one whole thing :P Anyways, keep it up but your grinding session is about to begin... good luck lol.

Yes, I've picked up both the Surf and Strength HM's, just without mentioning them in the story. I'll probably have to catch HM slaves for them though, as none of my dead Pokémon can use them.

As for fishing and grass spots, yes, they both count as being part of the same area. Thus in every route I have choice of one or the other, not both. It already happened on Route 12 actually, where I bypassed the patch of grass in favour of using the Super Rod. I ended up with a Seadra in that case, though I doubt I'll always be as lucky. xD

Chapter 22 - Pop Goes the Pokémon

There was only one thing left to do in Fuchsia City, and that was to challenge the Pokémon Gym. However I did not feel like my partners and I were quite ready for that, especially considering recent events at the Safari Zone.

I decided to head west to do some training on Route 18, part of the alternate path that I could have taken from Celadon City. I immediately encountered a trio of Bird Catchers, two of which Puffy got some much needed experience against. However the third had a Dodrio, the first I had seen apart from my own Stooges, and this one was considerably stronger. In fact, he nearly knocked out half my team! Luckily he did not however, and Damon was able to finish him off once and for all.

After a quick visit to the PokéCentre and back, I continued down the route. Like Route 19, there was access to the sea, and like Route 19, I decided to try my luck with the Super Rod.

And I caught a Tentacool...just like Route 19.

To continue further north onto Route 17 a bicycle was required, which thankfully was not a problem as I had picked one up back in Cerulean City. But...where was it now? I thought as I traveled back to that day in my mind.

Oh right! I realized. It's in my bag! I didn't know how, but I had managed to stuff a regular sized bicycle in my bag, which apparently used the same technology as Diglett's Dig. I tried not to think about it much as I pulled the vehicle out.

It was in the same condition as when I had first got it, and it looked brand new as I had hardly used it. The basket in front looked a little empty though...

That can be solved easily, I thought as I took one of my poké balls in hand. "Puffy, time for some more training!"

The little Jigglypuff appeared in the basket, a giant smile growing on her face as she made herself comfortable. It was a perfect fit! And not only spatially, but visually too, as Puffy matched the pink colour of the bike almost perfectly. =3

I then got on the bike and began the strenuous climb up the trail. I definitely should have taken this path the other way around, I thought a few minutes into it. I don't know if the road was getting steeper or I was just getting more tired, but with every peddle it felt like I was using up more effort than I had on the one before.

I found a spot on the corner of some long grass in order to rest, and that is exactly what I did. I left the bike near a park bench and just laid there looking up at the clouds.

"Jigglypuff," Puffy remarked, coming over to Rest beside me. I couldn't help but notice how much stronger the little pink balloon had become. Soon she would be able to tackle trainer battles all by herself, and perhaps even gym battles!

But it was wild Pokémon battles that were her specialty at the moment, as we soon got our rest interrupted by a temperamental Doduo.

"Doduo!" they shouted as they began charging toward us. They likely would have hit too if not for Puffy, who jumped between them and me and began to sing her beautiful song. The Doduo immediately stopped charging and fell to the ground, whereas I managed to throw a Great Ball before succumbing to the melody myself.

My eyes opened a few minutes later, when I realized that I had fallen victim to Puffy's song as well. I could see her standing over me with a mischievous look on her face, though I could tell she was happy so I didn't think much of it as I got up to continue on our way.

We had just about crossed back onto Route 16 when we encountered them: a group a Bikers and Cue Balls blocking our way.

"Hey you!" one of the Cue Balls shouted, looking in my direction.

CueBall.png

"This is our turf!" he said. "Get outta here or else?"

"Or what?" I responded, obviously not amused.

"Or else we'll pummel you and your Pokémon!" one of the Bikers answered me. "So you'd better turn around and run away, little girl!"

"As if," I replied, perhaps with a little more overconfidence than I should have had. "If you want a Pokémon battle, just ask. Puffy, I choose you!"

I didn't think Puffy was yet strong enough to take on an entire trainer battle, but she could at least start of off. The Biker chose a Voltorb, which Puffy quickly put to sleep. And after a few well-aimed Doubleslaps, Voltorb was down.

"Good work, Puffy!" I cheered as I hugged the Jigglypuff. "One more to go."

The Biker's second Pokémon was also a Voltorb, which Puffy also attempted to put to sleep. However, this time the move missed.

"No worries Puffy," I said. "Just try it agai-."

"Voltorb, use Seldestruct!"

"No..." I said, initially shocked in place as my memory drifted back to my first experience with that move back in Rock Tunnel. Ivanna had been almost completely annihilated by it, and she was one of my most defensive,,,

Oh no! Puffy!

"Puffy, retu-" I began. But it was already too late.

The Voltorb was glowing, moreso than even one would expect from evolution, as it began to crack apart. Small pieces of metal flew out in every direction, knocking over a number of bikers and their rides. I was thankfully outside of the blast radius, but as for Puffy....

She turned to me one last time, still with that giant smile on her face that she was becoming known for. She was trying to say something to me.

"Jiggly-"

POP!

And she was gone.

Jigglypuff.png

From such humble beginnings, Puffy had the most explosive end imaginable.
Puffy the Jigglypuff, Level 29
Chapter 10 - Chapter 22
Time to Draw on Angel Faces

"PUFFY!!!" I screamed out as I ran to the spot where she once was. But it was no use. After such an attack happening at such close range, there was no trace of her remaining. She was just...gone.

And then...I could hear laughter.

"Hahahahaha!" the Cue Ball who had originally confronted me was now laughing at my misery. Soon everyone else had joined in.

"Serves you right for challenging us," the Voltorb trainer said. "Now you'll think twice before-."

"WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT?!?!?!" I shout, my sadness now turning to anger. "YOU JUST KILLED MY JIGGLYPUFF!"

The laughing continued as they ignored me. It was then that my rage got the better of me and I remembered how I had dealt with those imbeciles back in Vermilion Gym. I then knew what I had to do.

I reached into my bag and launched my poké balls into the air. "Ivanna! Damon! Gwen! Stooges! Shadow! I choose all of you!"

And that is when the laughing stopped. Ivanna and Stooges stood on either side of me, roaring some of the loudest battle cries that I had even heard. Meanwhile Shadow and Damon were above the crowd of Bikers and Cue Balls, sending chills down their spines before even making a move, And of course there was also Gwen who had Teleported behind the group, a little overconfident but rightly so thanks to Psybeam.

"These men killed Puffy," I said I said through gritted teeth as the shock waves traveled through the rest of my team. "And now they're laughing about it. I don't think it's funny, do you?"

"Now wait, let's be rational here," the Cue Ball said, no longer treating me like a child finally. "We-."

"Ivanna, Body Slam!" I shouted, ignoring him as he had ignored me earlier. "Damon, Bite! Gwen, Psybeam! Stooges, Drill Peck! Shadow, Night Shade!"

The next few moments weren't my greatest, but they were definitely effective. Aside from Voltorb, they only had Fighting- and Poison-types, who Gwen was more than capable of dealing with on her own. However she was not on her own, and as a result the slaughter was threefold.

When it was over I continued on to Celadon City. The Snorlax that had been blocking my path earlier had vanished, probably from the commotion I had just caused in its backyard, allowing for easy access to the city.

I went to the department store to pick up a Leaf Stone for Leif, who I had recently received from the PC. I then reached into my bag and pulled out the three Rare Candies I was saving for Puffy. The intention was to make her as strong as she possibly could before offering her one of my Moon Stones. However that was no longer happening so I decided not to put the candy to waste. Thus I handed them to my recently captured Bellsprout and watched as he changed form.

Though he did not stay in that form for long, as I then offered him a Leaf Stone, in much of same fashion as I had imagined doing so with the Moon Stone.

I then took my Pokémon to the PokéCentre for some long overdue healing. Unfortunately I could not be healed so easily.

Quite the opposite really.

"I love your makeup," Nurse Joy said to me as she handed back my Pokémon. "Did you do that yourself?"

What? I thought. I wasn't wearing any makeup! Unless....

I rushed to the closest mirror I could find. When I finally did all of the past day's events began flooding back into my mind.

It must have been when I had fallen asleep due to her Sing attack. That look on her face when I awoke made complete sense now, and I wish I had had the sense to realize at the time. But it wasn't too late, as I could see it now.

I could see the pink and blue eye shadow which gave off the eerie impression of a Jigglypuff in human form. And under one of the eyes there were a series of squiggly lines that I could tell were intended to form a small heart. In fact they probably had, and it was likely what prompted Joy to comment on earlier.

But by then it was almost completely washed away by tears.

Other Pokémon

Spoiler:

I had been training Puffy with the intention of using her versus Sabrina. >< Now I need another strategy, especially with my main Pokémon mostly being of the Poison-type. I suppose speed is now the preferred strategy, so expect more of Claws and Stooges in the chapters ahead. ^_^
