Year 2021, April:
Hoenn has always been a popular region for its dramatic nature and its exotic native species of pokémon. A perpetual resort island, but also a fantastic land for adventurers and thrill seekers, even artists! But there is one career in which Hoenns have historically been curiously underwhelming: pokémon battling.

Of course, there are pokémon trainers here. Anybody owning a pokémon is legally a trainer and obliged to follow trainer laws. But taking it one step further and battling other trainers for money - that makes you a battler. As with any type of sports, there are hobbyists, and there are those who strive to actually pursue a professional career. Most battlers undertake journeys through a region both at the start of their career as a test, as well as later on to stay sharp and well versed in skills and environments - as well as to build a web of useful contacts from around the world if they can! Every year, the Ever Grande League also resets. This means that any battler can challenge the gyms around the region. If they manage to collect at least 8 gym badges, they have earned the right to challenge the Elite 4 for the title of Hoenn Champion. Few have ever succeeded.

As the Hoenn authorities are worried about Hoenn battlers being relatively few and far between, and never ranking top in the world charts anymore, the government has set up an office where trainers can receive a starter pokémon for free and a complimentary pokédex - which becomes registered as an ID in their name - to kickstart their career! This endeavor only started up a few months ago and has proven to be immensely appreciated for those who can take advantage of it. The pokémon species given out are specially bred to have good natured personalities and strong genes. A professor Brendan Birch is officially responsible for handing the starter and pokédex out to new battlers, and the facility can be found in Petalburg City, a modern and still growing settlement in the southwestern part of the region.

You are one of the people aspiring to be a battler, but you don't own any pokémon yet. However... you (currently) live in Rustboro City. You might have wanted to sign up in Petalburg City, but for one reason or another, you became aware of a new rivaling endeavor going on in your own town. Another pokémon researcher, professor Cypress, is starting up her own battling agency called Battle Beyond, through which she hopes to rival the official monopoly on teaching new battlers how to think and train. This flamboyant figure offers a different selection of starters, not meticulously bred locally but rather acquired with great care from different corners of the world. They are at least as strong as the classic "Hoenn starters", and according to Cypress, they are even more intelligent...

See, Cypress believes strongly in aura. As the existence and influence of aura in battles and pokémon growth is hard to prove, Cypress so far isn't taken seriously by other scientists. She will require you to agree to try your best to get in tune with your own and your pokemon's aura over the course of your journey, and report any unusual behavior or findings back to her. That doesn't sound too hard, does it?

And there aren't really any big and dangerous criminal teams blaring out their schemes to the public or walking around with blatant costumes, so you won't need to worry about anything like that... Probably.

There are a few things you should know about the Kanto we're playing this out in. First of all, the year is 2021!

- The story of RSE/ORAS never happened. Brendan Birch grew up to follow in his father's footsteps but focused more on breeding pokémon for battlers and developing the pokédex. May Norman is a popular trainer who focuses on contests and doesn't battle much. Wally Emerald, though? He is the current unbeaten Hoenn Champion of the Evergrande League.

- Team Magma and Team Aqua didn't rise back then. They were always low key and not really known to the public. They definitely didn't walk around in thematically colored clothing showing off their criminal organization's symbol on the chest.

- Despite this being 2021, all the gym leaders in Hoenn are still the same ones you're used to. Note: Sootopolis Gym is led by Wallace.

- Humans hurting humans physically is a widespread taboo, even among those you'd call criminals (!). For hundreds of years, the much more durable pokémon have done all the fighting for humans, as it has benefitted them both - humans don't get hurt, and the pokémon grow their bodies and aura stronger and thus often evolve.
--- This is why it's not considered such a strange thing to send a teenager alone on a journey around the region, as long as they can take care of themselves and have sufficiently strong pokémon with them. Strong people can be bad trainers, and great trainers are seldom bad people.

- Oh yeah, Aura is canon here. Think of it as a weak version of "The Force" but in pokémon instead of Star Wars. Feel free to have your characters develop it as a means to become somewhat psychic (psychic humans have been canon in the game/anime verse ever since gen 1, after all) or communicate with their pokémon, or channel pokémon abilities or moves, or anything like that, eventually. Creative freedom! Help Cypress' research out (: You may of course opt out and be a normal person, if you prefer. Cypress will be sad though. Lol.

Every IC day, you can make only 1 "advancing action". These actions are:

- Teach a new move to one of your current pokémon (regardless of how)
- Evolve one of your current pokémon
- Trade a pokémon

Capturing new pokémon doesn't count as an advancing action. You may capture as many as you wish at any time!

If you trade with an "NPC", you can only receive pokémon that were previously or currently available for you to capture, and the GM will decide its moveset and ability.

The world is split into many zones. Each time you want to move to another zone (even if it's backwards to an old one), let me know in the OOC thread, and I'll put a post up in the IC thread with any new stuff you should be aware of when arriving there.

Name: Chiara Dollart
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Hometown: Lavaridge Town

Appearance: Chiara reaches all the way to 168 cm, a quite respectable height for a young girl. She is skinny and pale, with plenty of freckles (unlike the gifs, whoops) and long golden blonde hair, purposefully tinted with pink at the ends. Her face is always full of expression; she's very bad at hiding her emotions. She tries to stay fresh-looking and uses eye-make up daily, but realizes it might become a bit of a challenge on the journey. At least she's lucky to have untroubled skin (so far).

She has no piercings (her parents have forbidden her before she turns 18... but she plans on getting them!) but she has several favorite lockets and necklaces which she intends to bring with her on the journey. For clothing, she wears white sneakers, usually bare legs under a skirt and blouse, or her favorite attire on the journey: laced short jeans trousers over a white fluffy blouse with short sleeves, and a pink thin scarf around her neck. Over this, she wears a short light-brown leather jacket if necessary. Her pokéballs, pokédex and pokénav can all fit in the pockets of the laced trousers, while she carries a dark-brown shoulder bag for everything else.

History: Born in Lavaridge Town from a long time native family line, Chiara was proud of her Hoenn heritage for a long time, until she grew up a bit and started dreaming of moving to a bigger city and seeing the more modern, fast-paced world. One noteworthy thing happening as she grew up, was that her aunt Courtney showed up one day a few years ago and tried to get her parents to join a new organization she was now part of. She said it was called Team Magma. Her parents refused, of course, thinking it sounded real shady. Chiara hasn't seen Courtney since.

She has two younger brothers, twins 10 years old now. They both are energetic monsters, according to her, and have no realistic grasp of the world at all. She loves them, though. Her mother works at the Lavaridge Spa, and her dad is a postman for the area around Lavaridge Town.

Personality: She's generally strong willed, to the point she's rash at times. Along with this comes her being easily distracted, but she can get lost in thoughts and forget what's going on around her due to her inner worries. Can be a bit selfish; doesn't always see why she should compromise to make things better for others if it makes things worse for herself. She's rather easy to antagonize or put down with harsh words or challenges, as she wears her emotions on the outside, pretty much. All these things mostly come from her still being an immature child in many ways.

She has quite good skills too though - her memory is great, and she is a quite talented artist with pencils and with water color in particular, dreaming of putting her art up in Lilycove's art gallery before she decided to try her luck at becoming a battler. Also, growing up in Lavaridge, she's decently in tune with nature and respects her surroundings. She can make up a fire and make shelters on her own, she can navigate risky slopes on mountains, and she doesn't at all mind sleeping under the stars (as long as she knows that she'll be able to have a shower the next day).

Been years since I've done a RP on a forum, since this is a new one starting up, decided to hop in now! If I need to change anything, let me know!

Name: Cogin Pomen

Age: 15

Gender: Male

Hometown: Lilycove City

Appearance: Cogin hunches down at 5' 3" (160cm) but when completely upright (almost never) he gains around an inch (163cm). His hunched stance stems from his general quiet nature and his constant book reading, with his dark green eyes constantly gazing into his books, always being something about Pokémon. He holds just about everything in his bag that holds all of his essential items in a neat organization of zipped, deep blue pockets.

Cogin tends to be minimalistic in a number of things, including his appearance. His light brown hair is kept short enough to keep it tidy and out of the way. He complements the simple look with a pair of pale blue jeans and a dark grey jacket, finishing off with simple dark tennis shoes.

The only thing that Cogin would consider unique about his attire would be his necklace, though it is a simple chain with a small glass container, which he would usually fill with water. The container would easily be filled by a very small piece of paper.

History: Cogin is the older brother in the family, with his younger sister. Both siblings had only a year difference between them. While Cogin's sister is overtly social and talks a lot, he grew up to be a mostly quiet child, trying his best not to step out of line. His sister got plenty of attention by being reckless and not being the best model. Seeing how his sister was constantly in trouble, young Cogin held back his tongue and tried his best to stay out of the way. He certainly was close with his family but couldn't quite connect with most other kids. Sure, he could play a game or two, but would generally stay away from the crowd of kids that would want to play some game or do some dare of sorts.

Soon, one fateful day (to the boy) was when he got a little book that showed him a wide world of fascinating ideas and creatures. A Pokémon book! This book gave Cogin a place to connect with many people and gave him confidence when talking with others. This book became a favorite of his and he would come to loathe the idea of having his own Pokémon, of course, he wouldn't have the personal courage to ask his parents for one, because he was worried that he might be seen as a little bit of a wild card like his sister. But, his love for Pokémon was well known to his parents. After all, whose parents wouldn't notice their kid constantly re-reading the same book? So, for the boy's birthday, he was given a trainer's manual talking about the basics of Pokémon battling!

While Pokémon contests were a common activity to the place, Cogin himself didn't go much, when he first did he was too bothered by the number of people to pay attention to the show. But battling? It was something he knew little about, and learning about it, made him want to go on a journey, just like the book said most battlers do. While he fancied the idea of a journey, his parents did have an ulterior motive. Seeing how much of a shell that Cogin had, they tried a number of activities to try and crack it, however, nothing really seemed to work. But, once he showed a passion for Pokémon, they thought that having him learn to battle would make him want to travel, and by doing that, he might break his shell all on his own.

Personality: Cogin would consider himself the quietest person. Even in the bustling city of Lilycove, any trip to the store would be met with great hesitation and a single word not spoken. He just couldn't get used to the great number of people and loud chatter. He would deny that he has a natural speaking ability and won't start up any conversation, he has to be talked to first. Mainly because he feels he won't know what to say or how to continue a conversation after a simple 'hello'.

To really get to know Cogin, one would have to bring up a topic he feels he could actually talk about, which is Pokémon, since that is an idea nearly everyone could know, and also with his growing obsession of it.

He considers himself quite knowledgeable in a number of items, namely math and some sciences. But he actually doesn't quite pick up on someone trying to take his attention to something subtly. Cogin's preference to not be overtly social has led to him outright fearing confrontation, any time someone makes him feel uncomfortable because he made an error, he goes into a mental panic, causing either a stumble of words, or drawing a complete blank. More often than not just freezing on the spot. But because of his ineptitude at people skills, he feels better with being around Pokémon that don't immediately appear to threaten him.

Zoey Winters / Female / 17 Years Old / Mauville City

Appearance

Zoey stands at a modest height of 5'6". She sports a rather slender body build, with a lightly sun-kissed skin complexion as a result from the amount of time she spends out doors. Zoey has bright, sapphire-blue eyes which are offset by her flowing, bright pink hair. The girl tends to keep her hair pulled up into a rather neat ponytail, with her bangs neatly aligned on the side of her face. Always a fashionable girl, Zoey tends to dress in popular, designer jeans and tops. Due to Hoenn's rather warmer climate, most of these tops are always tank tops. Zoey offsets her clothing choices with some rather unique choices. One of which being a choker with a moon-shaped pendant, something she is never seen without, and the other being a pair of loose sleeve-like garments that she wears over her forearms. Her new and stylishly sporty trainer's bag is worn across her left shoulder. Zoey has several piercings, with two in her left ear, one in her right ear, and a navel ring as well.

History

Born and raised in the Hoenn region, Zoey hails from a rather wealthy family. Her mother made her living as a very successful actress at the Pokéstar Studios in the Unova region, while her father works as a top executive at the Devon Corporation. Zoey was born as an only child and since money was in no short supply while she was growing up, the she was often gifted with almost anything she could possibly dream of in the world. If there was anything that Zoey wanted, the child was usually given it.

Zoey was usually on her own while growing up. With her father being such a powerful executive among the corporation and her mother being such a popular actress, the child was often left in the care of the hired help. Residing in a rather spacious and luxurious penthouse within Mauville City, the pink-haired girl often spent her time wandering around the various shops located within the mall-like city, keeping herself entertained by outright torturing the hired help, or traversing the routes just on the outskirts of the city. While one would think that being born into such a wealthy family with parents who would often give their child almost anything they could ask for would be the ideal life, Zoey always found herself feeling a bit empty on the inside. The pink-haired girl often found herself desiring things that she quickly discovered money and shopping were not able to fulfill, and yet... the girl really didn't know just what that missing thing was. As time passed, Zoey quickly began to find herself growing bored with the pleasure-filled life she was living and soon decided that she would find something to fill that void.

She had always had an interest in Pokémon. Perhaps the life of a trainer is the something she's been looking for.

Personality

Naive and very headstrong, Zoey has led somewhat of a sheltered life. She is very demanding and once she puts her mind towards something, be it a goal or a personal belief, that is just the way it is and there is little that can be done to change the young woman's mind. Since she is the only child in her family, and they were always fairly well off, Zoey tends to come off as somewhat of a spoiled child. She does not like being told no for an answer and she's not afraid to let someone know just what she thinks of them. That is not to say that the girl is always upfront and completely honest, however. Zoey knows at times that to accomplish what she wants, that she has to try and play a bit more on the manipulative side. She's not afraid to bend the truth at times if it proves to be in her best interest. Should Zoey somehow mess something up, the pink-haired girl is always quick to find a way to spin the blame onto someone or something else.

That said, Zoey is somewhat of a lonely girl. Growing up, the child never had much of a chance to interact with many others her own age. More often than not, her parents were busy with their careers and other sorts of fancy parties. This left the pink-haired girl on her own on many occasions, with only the maids and butlers present to grant her any sort of social interaction. As a result, it's quite common for the girl to lack any sort of real tact in various social situations.

Nice to see, Alby!

So, in the OP, you read about Cypress sending you on a journey to learn more about Aura as you grow as a trained. Aura is about friendship, heart and belief, it's what lets pokémon Mega evolve when together with their trainer, it's connected to pokémon types and how Arceus had plates for all these types exactly, why Z-moves are depending on type (and species) and it's how there are actual psychic people in the world.

Cypress strongly believes, but she needs others to show signs of Aura being a real thing, a thing possible to call upon and develop. And we can make our characters either ignore this request, or start showing signs of Aura influence together with their pokémon in different ways :) Be creative! But gradual ofc, most likely we won't actually see much of it until later in the RP.

I'm thinking I might have some of my pokémon who grow close to Chiara develop different typings. Like Vulpix ending up Fire/Psychic perhaps. Haven't fully decided yet though!

Something else can be developing an ability to telepathically communicate with your pokémon, or maybe being able to use your pokémon's moves, or other cool things.

Name: Mauve Banzett
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Hometown: Petalburg City

Appearance: His eyes are close to beady pupils with no irises, but his eye color is amber. His mouth is normally in a grin, but it's usually shaped that way. He doesn't normally frown unless he's especially down. His hair is dirty-blonde colored, and his skin is a healthy, slightly tanned white. It's really difficult to tell, but he's definitely not pale. He lives in Hoenn, a very tropical land.

He wears a purple shirt with a yellow logo, and yellow writing on the left sleeve. he wears a beaded necklace ~~for now~~, black cargo pants with zippers just under his knees that he can unzip, and pocket to make them into shorts. His sneakers are black and yellow.

History: Mauve Banzett was actually orphaned, and left on the doorstep of his aunt and uncle, who work at the Devon Corporation. Despite the sudden arrival of the infant, both of them had raised Mauve with more love than a child could ask for.

His guardians would allow him to play outside with the other children, as his aunt decided to stay at home to help raise Mauve while her husband worked more. Sometimes, Mauve would sneak out with the other kids, and venture out into the local forest. Sometimes, his uncle would have to give him five fingered discipline when he found Mauve and the other kids out so late.

Still, even as a troublemaker, Mauve was a good kid. He was fairly laid back, and never got into a fight with anyone.

However, he'd occasionally sneak out alone, just to feel the tranquility of the forest, and sit under the pale moonlight.

Personality: Mauve has, and always will be, a clown. But, he's mostly laid back, and doesn't like to get involved with major disputes or pick fights with anyone. He too, had a bully in his childhood. However, he had tricked the bully into stealing from the local pokemart, ending with his mother dragging him off.

Mauve isn't good with direct confrontation, and prefers to dance around any issue. Thus, he's a bigger fan of taking any decent shortcuts, and ones that will less likely end in disaster. He has never strayed from trying to interact with Pokemon, and mostly interacted with any that the other kids met, or when he strolled out at night in Rustboro forest.

Name: Kagura Akagi 神楽

Age: 18

Place of Birth: Ecruteak City

Appearance: She has the lean build of a young woman engaged in regular physical activity. She has large blue eyes and her sleek, black hair usually accented with a bluish or purple shine. Kagura sports a thick fringe of slightly curled bangs which hang past her eyebrows and are parted neatly in the middle as well as a few strands of shoulder-length hair in front of her ears. In normal social settings, Kagura displays a great fondness for fashionably colorful, patterned kimonos and always ties her ponytail with a large, colorful ribbon--her favorite of which is apparently a vibrant indigo-blue.

Childhood/Family Life: For many decades from Johto, the Akagi household remained a pro-traditions revered clan who puts strength and power above all else. Kagurai's mother was a stay-at-home mom, while her father became the clan's head after his own father. He constantly encouraged the clan to remember their principles; because of that, they became a constant success in many business affairs, and even the members each were profound and world class pokémon trainers. When it came to pokémon themselves, the clan never saw them as 'partners', but more so tools for business. Powerful pokémon was everything to the Akagi household, with anything less were saw as worth just as little as mere garbage.

Growing up, Kagura was mainly raised by her mother, while her father was constantly out supporting the clan and the household. Her mother was kind and wise, while her father was strict and prideful. Kagura herself, was shy and quiet around others when she was young. She had a simple and quiet childhood: spent most of her time going to school, and learned all sorts of pokémon related topics. Alongside learning about pokémon, she loved plants. She used to help her mother plant all sorts of species of flowers in their garden. On the other foot, because of her shy and meekly nature, she was constantly mocked and ridiculed by her cousins - fellow members of the Akagi household. Over time, this led to her having a lack of confidence, leading to that faithful day.

Despite her age, she was still as shy and gentle as anyone came. Her father disapproved of her nature. He wanted her to become stronger - but Pokémon battling was not her strong suit however, as she lost battle after battle against her family members. Her kind nature disapproved of pokémon becoming hurt, thus she often hesitated commanding pokémon to deliver blows to another. One day, her father had enough of her apparent weak and cowardice nature. Her father was set to disown Kagura as a member of the family and his daughter entirely. He could not accept a weak individual in the clan, even if it was her daughter. Her father ordered Kagura to leave the household. Her mother, despite her love for her, was only left with disappointment with her daughter's lack of strength for the family. Kagura became a disgrace to her family name, as she was approached by insults and slurs by her family, as she finally left, leaving her life behind.

Personality/Virtues/Skills: In a nutshell, her internal torment caused a spark within her that decided it was time for her to move on past her previous demeanor. Kagura these days now can be described as a sarcastic, sharp-tongued, yet witty individual with a strong will. Still, she remains kind and light-hearted for those who needed it, depending on a situation. She has a strong sense of pride and prefers to make her own choices, rather than letting others decide for her.

As she grew, she learned to be independent, with a constant open mind towards new aspects of culture, and new beliefs around her environment. From her never give up attitude towards the people and other matters she holds dear, one could say that is where her strength derives from. Perhaps it can be argued that she only grew strong herself from the harsh history she had.

Perhaps her greatest regret was getting to realize how pathetic her past self was. While she had recently decided to change her life for her own betterment, a part of her wishes she had the strength to make her mother and father recognize her from the get go. She was born weak in the eyes of her family and suffered for it, and to become independent, she had to work for it and make sacrifices. As such, she has the arrogance of a person who stands on her own, but still understands the feelings of those who are weak.

Other than pokémon, she loves flowers above all else. Don't be surprised if she stops in the middle of the road, taking a gander of the wild flowers that bloomed nearby, known their exact species and classification. Her favourite type of pokemon is naturally Grass, and bug pokemon is her least favourite by far. Any sight of bugs, and she shakes and cringes like none as seen before.

Dragon - nice character! I'm a tad bit confused by the timescale though. You say years of donning the kitsune persona has made her who she is today, but earlier in that part of the SU you say "It all started sometime after Kagura was kicked out of her family two years ago. Luckily for Kagura, she had support of a friend who lived in Oldale Town in Hoenn. As time came by to her current age, deep within herself, she became engulfed by solitude and sadness. Akiru Marufuji / Male / 18 Years Old

Name: Akiru Marufugi
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Hometown: Pacifidlog Town

Appearance: Akiru's a healthy height and build for his age; 5'11 with lightly toned arms and legs, born from years of swimming and surfing. His hair, which seems a silverly tone in some light, and a pale blue in others, slides down to right below his shoulder blades, with untamed, jagged edges and bangs that fall a little too close to his eyes, but what are you going to do? There's no barber shops on Pacifidlog. Akiru's eyes are that bothersome (his word) shade of blue that can come off as grey-blue, green-blue, or deep-blue, depending on what he's wearing.

History: Akiru was born and raised on the tiny, far off island of Pacifidlog Town, an insignificant speck on the map of Hoenn that barely constitutes being called a town, and likely only draws any attention to itself whatsoever due to the fact that it's...floating on logs (because someone thought this was a good idea). As one can imagine, not a lot of people want to subscribe to the log-lifestyle, thus Akiru has had very limited interactions with people throughout his life, and limited experiences...there's not a lot to do on a town of logs cast out in the middle of the ocean.

Akiru's parents divorced when he was a young child, too young to hold many memories of the situation, merely the vague idea that 'it was a messy time.' His mother, still burdened by said messy divorce, is somewhat of a shut in, while his father (and mistress) relocated to Oldale town, where Akiru was sent for all major holidays, and vacations. Akiru harbors a deep resentment against his father for leaving his mother in such a pathetic state, and he holds no attachment to the woman he's supposed to call his step mother, and yet...he can't find it in him to strike up a great deal of bitterness for being dragged to Oldale town...not since he met Kagura there.

Personality:

Akiru is...complicated, at least, that's probably the easiest way to describe him in a quick nutshell. Since he was young, he has felt compelled to look after his mother, making him feel and act mature for his age, though, considering the amount of time he's spent on a tiny island made of logs, he is also considerably more sheltered than a boy of eighteen would otherwise be. Akiru was at the top of his class in school, and was often proclaimed by his circle of friends to be the most skilled when it came to the many surfing, swimming, sword fighting competitions they set up to keep themselves entertained, both facts he is proud of. The thing is...there are twelve children in Pacifidlog town. He is aware that when put against larger odds, he likely won't come out on top, which makes him reluctant to try. Similarly, while he gives off the facade of being a natural born leader, his confidence is somewhat lacking, and when left alone with his thoughts, his mind goes to a rather dark, depressive place rather quickly.

Akiru's interests are somewhat limited, considering what little he's been able to experience in his life. Aside from Pokemon, which are everywhere, and impossible not to be interested in, one way or another, he does have a vested interest in surfing, sailing, and exploring: Many times over the years, Akiru and his friends would hop on their surfboards and glide to the tiny islands (well, not real islands, far too small to be islands, more like...piles of sand risen above the ocean), collecting things that washed onto the sand, exploring for hidden treasures, sword fighting (with sticks) to see who would name the island...maybe that's where his desire to take this journey came from...or maybe it's the near insanity that being trapped on the same tiny piece of land nearly every day for nearly two decades will bring. There's a huge, beautiful world out there, full of amazing sights, powerful, wondrous creatures, and more adventures than one could even imagine, and they're waiting for him.

It's time to get off this island.
