Arcanine has great stats but a terrible movepool, but Charizard has decent stats and a ok movepool, so I would go with Charizard.

Then again, I don't know much about the competitive side of the game.

Better for what? The two have distinct leanings in their movepools and statlines so you can't just say that one is better than the other. Give a freakin' context and we'll talk.

Speaking of fire types in general, there are better ones than these two, though. Also, Charizard will need a spinner to support it because of that double Stealth Rock weak.

Yeah, charizard, as mentioned above, gets hammered by stealth rock. However, it is immune to EQ, something not to be underappreciated. I love both, so no biased opinion...but yeah, best what?

Ah just post what you plan to use it for if its for a special sweeper go chari'!but really as poeple have posted before chari' is double weak to SR but Immune to EQ which is the most common move in use.Arcanine has a regular weakness to SR but EQ is Super-Effective against him so its your choice.

Arcanine does NOT have a bad movepool, Choice Band Extremespeed is completely awesome

Arcanine DOES have a bad movepool.

[email protected] Band
Jolly/Hasty
252 Spd/252 Atk/4 HP
Flare Blitz
Thunder Fang
ExtreemeSpeed(ty Name..)
Overheat/Iron tail

The fact that he has to actually resort to iron tail is proof enough.

And remember that Arcanine can be a pretty decent special sweeper with sunny day support

-Hidden Power(Ice)
-Flamethrower
-Solarbeam
-Dragon pulse

All in all that covers just about every type in OU. Of course you need to watch for tyranitars..
