A/N: Recap: Red has captured a Nidorino, and gave it away to a little girl. Later, Red followed a mysterious group of men into the West Wood, where he fought a young boy, and a mysterious Pokemon.
Chapter Two: Vs. Machoke
Seconds passed, and no-one answered the door.
“Hmm…must be busy,” he reasoned with himself, and he pushed in the bell again.
Brring!
Again, Red waited for a few minutes, but again, there was no answer.
“Hello! Is anybody in?” Red shouted, as his waistcoat rustled around in the wind. He waited for a couple of seconds, so he folded his arms stubbornly. He was about to turn away, when he noticed the door handle. He slowly reached out his hand again, and grasped the door handle. He pulled it, expecting nothing, but surprisingly, the handle spun around, and the door swung open.
“It’s open!” Red breathed, as he took one last look outside. ‘Have to hurry up,’ he thought, ‘it’s nearly dark…’
Red looked inside, to see a room thrice the size of his small cottage.
“It is massive in here!” Red exclaimed, as he strolled in. Against the wall was various bookcases of different sizes, housing many different types of books. Next to the cases were small tables with laptops shut tight on them, along with piles of boxes, with words scrawled messily on the side.
“He must have only just got back, then,” Red murmured to himself, as he walked through the Lab. He turned a corner, to see four shelves, covered head to toe in PokeBalls.
“Look at all the PokeBalls!” Red nearly squealed, as he ran into the centre of the hallway. He looked around happily, until he found a PokeBall with a sheet of paper stuck to it.
“What’s this Pokemon?” Red asked himself, as he picked it up. Written on the sheet of paper, was the word -
“Bulbasaur! Cool! They are really rare!” Red exclaimed, as he grabbed Nyoro from his belt.
“Nyoro, look at this Bulbasaur!” a gleeful Red insisted, as he held the two PokeBalls close to each other. For a few seconds, Red grinned, as Nyoro and the Bulbasaur sized each other up. Then, without warning, the Bulbasaur began to growl at Nyoro, who turned his back on the Pokemon.
“Okay…I’m just gonna put you back…” Red said uncertainly, as he placed Bulbasaur back on the shelf. Behind him, the door made a long, slow, creaking noise, and Red froze.
“You Poke-Thief!” Red spun round, to see an angry man, running towards him in a lab coat.
“No, wait! You have it wrong!” Red protested, as he ran further into the Lab, Nyoro still in his hands.
“Give me back the Poliwhirl, or I will call the police!” The man shouted fiercely.
“Please Sir, I didn’t - GAH!”
Red walked straight into a machine, and the man stopped mid-step.
“You fool! You have opened the Balls!” The man shouted at the top of his voice.
Red quickly spun round on his heel, to see a machine flash and light up. There was a sound, like a computer activating, and suddenly, every single PokeBall on the shelves opened up, and a hundred or so Pokemon’s heads popped out of the Balls.
“No!” The man bellowed, as dozens of Pidgeys, Rattatas, and Caterpies escaped from the Lab. The Pidgeys smashed through the windows, as they ran to freedom, and the Rattatas ran for the door. The Caterpies scooted after them, and Red swore he saw a small Bulbasaur escaping to freedom.
“My lord, the Pokemon! Look what you have done, you foolish child!” The man screamed at Red, who read his name tag. ‘Professor Oak,’ it said, and Red suddenly felt his cheeks getting hotter.
“Please, Professor, I didn’t mean to -”
“Pidge Pidge Pidgey!” A frantic bird Pokemon shouted, as it excreted on Oak’s head.
“GET BACK MY POKEMON!”
“Okay!”
Red ran through Pallet Town, with a heavy bin bag around his shoulder. He felt like Santa Clause, as little kids looking out from their windows watched him catch Oak’s Pokemon, and throw them into the bag. Before long, he had captured most of the little critters, and was trudging back to Oak’s, in the dark.
“I’m back, Professor Oak, Sir,” Red panted, as he dropped the bin bag on the floor. Oak put his hands on his hips, and stared down at Red.
“Please tell me none of them escaped?” Oak asked, as Red placed them back on their shelves slowly. He continued to grab three Balls at a time, until nearly all five shelves were completed. He scooped up a final Weedle, and placed it one of the Ball holders, to find one space left. Red’s eyes nearly popped out of his head - he had lost Oak’s rarest Pokemon in the Lab.
“I may have…misplaced, yeah, misplaced…your…”
“Go on boy,” Oak said sternly, as Red fidgeted with his fingers.
“What? My Bulbasaur! That is my rarest Pokemon!” Oak roared, as Red cowered in the corner.
“I’ll go out now and look for it, please, just give me a chance!”
“It is too dark! Besides, your mother will be getting worried! You run along home now, boy, and I will deal with you tomorrow! Understood?”
“Yessir!” Red chanted hesitantly, and Oak opened the door.
“Now go home, and think about what you have done!” Oak ordered, and Red traipsed out of the Lab, still clutching Nyoro firmly in his hand.

“What? Who is it at this time in the morning?” Oak opened the Lab door slowly, to see Red at the door, frowning. “Oh it’s you, well, come in then,” Oak obliged, and opened the door further for Red.
“I’m here to collect Bulbasaur’s PokeBall, Professor Oak,” Red explained, as Oak walked over to his shelves. He walked up to Red, and the boy held out his hands, but Oak walked past him, and towards the door.
“Professor, I thought you wanted me to catch the Bulbasaur?” Red asked, crossing his fingers tightly behind his back.
“I do, but I have decided that I cannot trust you alone, with such a rare Pokemon like Bulbasaur. So I am coming with you!” Oak finalised, and Red loosened his fingers. Oak smiled smugly, and walked out of the door.
Red sighed, and followed the old Professor out. He shut the door firmly behind him, and turned around to look for Oak. From behind the Lab, a thing barged past him, and Red spun round.
“What was that thing?” Red questioned, but then noticed a shiny, red bike perched in front of him.
“I’m taking my bike, and you are going to run! I don’t trust you one little bit, Poke-Thief!” Oak cried out dramatically, but Red smiled to himself. He didn’t really want to go out on his own anyway - who knows where he could end up?
“Kid, what are you smiling about?” Oak barked like a dog, pedalling down the path. “We have a Bulbasaur to find!” Red stopped smiling, and looked at Oak. “Follow me!”
Oak began to pedal into the West Wood, closely followed by a sprinting Red.
“Kid, don’t feel secure! As soon as we find that Bulbasaur, I am turning you into the police!”
“Yes sir!” Red agreed, as they disappeared into the trees.
***
“I don’t see any signs of Bulbasaur here, Professor Oak, sir,” Red mumbled, as he and the old man looked around Viridian City.
“Yes well, if I knew we would have to have come to Viridian City, kid, I would have just let the Bulbasaur go…” Oak said wistfully.
“Has he got out before?” Red asked, as he pushed Oak’s bike round the streets.
“No…he has tried, though. Luckily, the other Pokemon have guarded the doorway when he has. You see, Bulbasaur is very stubborn and very advent-”
“Over there! It’s him!” Red shouted, and pointed down an alleyway, where a small, green creature stared at Red angrily.
“Chase after him!” Oak ordered, and the two ran down the alleyway. Bulbasaur’s eyes opened wide, and it flitted through the alleyway quickly. It rounded a corner, and jumped over a small fence, just as Red and Oak came charging through the small and tight pathway. Red quickly collapsed the bicycle as he ran, and cleared the fence, landing like a frog. Oak ran quickly, but stopped as soon as he reached the fence, and tried to climb over it pathetically.
“Hurry!” Red shouted desperately, as Oak came toppling over the fence.
“I’m okay!” He added, as he stumbled to his feet, joining Red in chasing the Bulbasaur around the quiet town.
“Round that corner, kid!” Oak ordered, as the Bulbasaur skidded, and rounded another corner, onto the main road.
Red sprinted as fast as he could, with the bike in his arms, turning the corner. Unfortunately, he slipped over his feet, and landed on the floor.
“Kid, get up!” Oak bellowed, as he stopped to a halt next to Red’s head.
“Where did he get to?” Oak asked inquisitively, searching round the street.
“He’s making a break for the Gym!” Red concluded, pointing towards the top of the street, where Viridian Gym stood. Red got back on his feet, and he and Oak charged towards the derelict Gym. Bulbasaur crawled through a hole in the boarded up door, seconds before Oak and Red jumped at it with their elbows. The wooden board snapped open, and Oak rubbed his elbow.
“Follow me!” Oak winced, as he ushered Red into the dark Gym.
Red tried to look around, but it was pitch black in the desolate Gym. Oak fumbled with his lab coat, and grabbed two torches. He handed one to Red, and he quickly switched it on.
“Woah, this place is huge!” Red whispered in awe, as he shone his torch against the wall. There was a long pillar stood up against the wall, with a large crack flowing through it. On top of the pillar was a bust of someone’s head - who it was, Red was oblivious to.
“Who is that?” Red asked himself, but he was interrupted by a frantic scuffling of feet.
“There you are, you little imp!” Oak said furiously, and Red shone his torch into the corner. Crouching down was Bulbasaur, with his eyes slanted.
“Come here, Bulbasaur…” Oak said, clicking his fingers. Suddenly, the Bulbasaur ran and leapt forward at Oak, tackling his stomach.
“Now, honestly! I am your owner!” Oak argued, as he landed on the cold stone floor. Red looked at Oak, then began to walk towards Bulbasaur.
“Hey Bulbasaur, don’t be scared. Sure it’s your first time out in the world, isn’t it?” Red said soothingly, and a confused Bulbasaur looked up at him.
“You were kept in that little capsule all of your life, but there’s no need to be nervous! Come here, Bulbasaur…”
Bulbasaur inched towards Red, as Oak looked ahead. Red patted Bulbasaur’s head softly, but Oak’s eyes widened.
“Red! Over there!” Oak trembled, standing up. Red grabbed the Bulbasaur in his hands, and stood up next to Oak. Out of the darkness, a massive creature two heads taller than Red appeared.
“What is it?” Red squeaked, as the Pokemon flexed its muscles.
“I-It’s a wild Machoke!” Oak answered, as the Machoke roared.
“Move!” Oak cried out, as he shoved Red out of the way, as the Machoke bought its fist down on the pair. Red and Bulbasaur sprinted across the Gym, as they heard a scared squeal in the distance.
“Professor Oak!” Red exclaimed, and turned around, only to be met by the Machoke, looking down on him. Bulbasaur squirmed in Red’s hands, and broke free, running underneath Machoke’s legs.
“Bulbasaur, no!” Red argued, as Machoke raised a massive fist.
“Machoke!” It growled again, and Red covered his face with his arms.
He waited for the fist to clobber his head in, but the pain never came. Red peered through his arms, to see the Machoke wrestling against a long, green vine entangled around his punching arm.
“Bulba Bulba!” He heard the Bulbasaur cry out, and Red quickly backed up against the wall.
“Professor!” Red shouted out, as the injured man stumbled into the corridor. “What’s Bulbasaur’s best attack?”
Red waited for an answer, as Machoke strained, but then Oak tripped over in his confusion, and landed head first on the floor.
“Think, Red, think…” Red racked his brains, as the vines began to rip. “If he has a bulb on his back then…yes! Bulbasaur, over here!” Red ordered, and Bulbasaur loosened his Vine Whip. He quickly darted back under Machoke’s legs, and stood beside Red.
“MACHOKE!” The crazy Pokemon shouted, as Red looked behind him. There was five planks of wood, all lined up on each other, blocking out a window.
“Come and get some Machoke!” Red taunted, and Machoke bought both fists down on the pair. Oak quickly opened his eyes, to see Red rip a plank of wood away, and to see Bulbasaur’s bulb open up, and take in the pouring sunlight.
“BULBASAUR!” Bulbasaur shouted, as his bulb took in the sunlight, and directed it at Machoke.
“YES!” Red screamed, as Machoke was flung over Oak’s head, and smashed into the wall on the opposite side of the Gym.
“Kid, you did it!” Oak smiled, as he scrambled up again, and ran to Red, and a tired, but happy Bulbasaur.
“How did you know how to execute Solar Beam?” Oak asked like a hyperactive girl, as Red scratched his hair.
“Well, I figured that plants turn sunlight into energy, and this Bulbasaur has a plant on it’s back -”
“You figured! Wah-hahahahahahaa! Oh, you’re amazing!” Oak cried out, as Red blushed to himself.
“Well, I wouldn’t say I’m amazing…okay, maybe a little bit!” Red grinned, as Oak grabbed a PokeBall from his belt, and pointed it towards Bulbasaur.
“Kid, I want you to have Bulbasaur!” Oak asked Red, who began to grin even wider.
“Really! That is so cool! Thanks, Professor Oak!”
“He’s bonded with you kid, it’s only right that he becomes yours!”
“Oh thanks, Professor, but let me make this clear. I did not break into your Lab yesterday! I wanted to become a better Trainer, so I came to you for help. You see, yesterday -”
“There is no need to explain, kid. Do you know what makes a good Pokemon Trainer? It is not if you have a powerhouse, it is not knowing clever tricks. No, it is what is in your heart. The connection you have with your Bulbasaur, and your Poliwhirl, is what is key to becoming a great Pokemon Trainer.”
Red nodded in agreement, and Oak began to walk towards the entrance. Grabbing Oak’s bike, Red followed him quickly.
“What is your name, boy?” Oak asked, as he swung open the Gym door.
“Red, Professor Oak,” Red replied, handing back the collapsed bike.
“Here, Red,” Oak said, handing over a small, red square, with flashing lights on it. Red took the square, and stared at it in amazement.
“This is the Pokedex - the encyclopaedia of Pokemon! Whenever you meet a Pokemon, enter your data into it. By the time you’ve input all your data into it, you may have become a truly great trainer!”
Red smiled, as he opened the Pokedex, and pressed all the buttons. He put Bulbasaur’s PokeBall next to the Dex. Suddenly, on screen, a massive list of data came up, and a small picture of a Bulbasaur.
“Cool! Me, one of the great Trainers!” Red said, as he closed the Dex, and clipped Bulbasaur onto his belt next to Nyoro.
“Thanks, Professor Oak!”
