The first episode just aired mere hours ago and I've finally been able to watch it.

Music
Daybreak's Bell
Wana

The opening feels a lot more like a normal Gundam opening and not as much as the popular and self important image that Gundam SEED / DESTINY gave off. I love the song for the most part, usual L'Arc~en~Ciel fair but with more of a kick. As I said before, the visuals have a lot more in common with the older Gundam series, I know Sunrise said they wanted this to set up a third fanbase of new fans, yet I can't help but feel that the opening was a nod to fans of the "fourth fanbase" shows (Wing, G, X, Turn A) and saying that those shows aren't forgotten.

The actual ending song took a little getting used to, it doesn't sound as clean cut as most songs. It feels more raw and like it wasn't finished yet, which is can either be a great effect or a horrible one, it was somewhere in between here. I did like the last few seconds of the song though. It seems a lot faster for an ending. The visuals focus on the Meisters themselves and not the rest of the cast. The feeling I got from it was that throughout the series we're going to see them try to fit into the crowd but they're obviously going to stand out.

Mission-1 "Celestial Being"

The episodes are referred to as "Missions" here, just as they were referred to as "Phases" in SEED / DESTINY. For a first episode of a Gundam series, things really are starting out very differently. There's not stolen Gundam, no one stumbles into a Gundam in the middle of a battle, in fact all of the Gundam Meisters seem like they've been doing this for years. It reminds me a bit of the first episode of Gundam SEED DESTINY only in the fact that it's got a lot more action than most first episodes do. We're thrown right into it and the second episode looks like it'll continue that trend. We'll slowly learn more about the character, but right now we mostly know that the four Gundam Meisters are part of a group known as Celestial Being, using Gundams to end war, an action seen as contradictory by most people in the series. Somehow I don't think that they themselves understand that one too well yet. Also, for just the second time, we get a main character that isn't Japanese or some weird amalgamation of Japanese and something else. The main character, Setsuna is of middle eastern descent, Kurdish to be precise, and it shows pretty well in the opening.

Misc.

The cast itself is pretty good for what are considered mostly unknowns. The C.E. shows were notorious for using a lot of their budget on getting big name seiyuu, but here you've got guys that really haven't done more than one or two big shows in the past. Setsuna's seiyuu, Mamoru Miyami's last (and really only) big role was as Light in Death Note. Shinichirou Miki, Lockon's seiyuu is mostly known for doing Urahara in BLEACH and Kojiro in Pokemon. Outside of that you don't really have too many well knowns.

Patrick Cola-Sour is the best anime character name ever. I don't care what his official English spelling is, his name is that awesome.
Apart from that, the Gundam designs are average (except Obese Gundam, which is pretty much a definition of awesome), but I love the enemy mech designs.

The OP/ED music doesn't suit my tastes, by I can just skip through it really.

I found the episode okay, my big qualm was that it didn't really explain at lot. That's the problem with including too much action in a first episode.

If anything, 00 is essentially Wing Redux, right down to the pretty boys, useless women, and the whole "mercenaries with advanced hardware versus the rest of the world" schtick.

They should've just made Tiera a chick from the get-go. Since when is "Setsuna F. Seiei" a Kurdish name (assuming that that's his real birth name and not an alias)? What the hell kind of a name is Allelujah Haptism? At least Lockon Stratos has a badass name and ownership of a Haro to his credit.

Don't get me started on the ludicrous geo-politics of the series. The arrangement of the power blocks in the Cosmic Era made more sense than this.

At least we've got a combat-tested director at the helm.
