Lately, I've been seeing Fighting types and Ground Types being used on the same set. Is there some type of big secret I'm missing out on? A prime example is Electivire with Cross Chop AND Earthquake.

I do realize that they cover the same types as far as SE goes (also not to mention Fighting attacks Dark as well), but uh, yeah. Just out of curiosity.

I always preferred Fighting types to be better, because it has slightly a bit more type coverage than Ground does. I think Electivire needs ONLY Cross Chop

I guess Vire has that b/c there aren't many better options. Of course, I'm sure there is one. It's just been standard so long...

Earthquake has better accuracy - but Electivire's set is really thrown together from its strongest moves...

Earthquake covers only like Fire+Electric more than Fighting, but Fighting also covers T-Tar

Maybe accuracy matters as well

EDIT: I can't read the letters on the banned X(

well once it gets motor drive boost, it wants to be able to KO what it can. it otherwise becomes useless.

I think the only real advantage EQ has on Electivire is for Metagross. Otherwise it might just be best to stick with CC and use another punch in it's place, Fire Punch would be useful since it'll do more damage to Forry, Skarm won't like one either, hurts Bronzong and Metagross just as well. That 100 base damage for EQ is hard to pass up though.

The only Pokémon that should really be using both a Fighting and Ground move is Electivire simply because Electivire wants to OHKO as much as possible in which case the 2 extra super effective hits you can get from having a Ground type move can make all the significance. Electivire also lacks any other decent physical attack excluding Fire Punch which only really hits Forretress and Scizor. Earthquake is also used simply because Cross Chop's accuracy might not always be reliable if you want to KO a Pokémon that's weak to both Fighting and Ground without getting hit. Generally physical sweepers either have a Ground / Rock or Fighting / Rock combo, though, because on Pokémon that aren't meant to abuse Expert Belt, Ground / Fighting is just redundant.

What about physical Lucario? I can recall him having both EQ & Close Combat. Or am I remembering wrong?

Physical Lucario uses Close Combat, Stone Edge, Crunch and Extremespeed or Blaze Kick, no Earthquake.

On Electivire CC and Eq are necessary, because of Tyranitar, your own EQ wont OHKO Ttar, whilst Tyranitars Will OKHO you. I also think that EQ wont OHKO Blissey and Weavile.

Let's see if I can throw some speculation into the mix.

What does Fighting hurt SE that Ground doesn't? Normal and Dark types
What does Ground hurt SE that Fighting doesn't? Fire, Poison and Electric types.

I guess having both moves gives you more coverage against those types.

Also the resistances are different - sure, Fighting's SE against Steel but you wouldn't want to rely on Cross Chop against Metagross, for example.

The reason for both is to maximise SE coverage so Expert Belt can be used effectively

Hitting 13 out of 17 types Super Effectively is quite a lot to ask from one Pokemon
