- First off, my sister's computer hasn't been able to start up normally. It gets to the screen saying "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" with the moving bar at the bottom, and then it doesn't budge from there, so I can't log on or anything. And I tried to boot it with Last-Known Good Configuration and Safe Mode, but that doesn't help. Any tips for this one?

-This issue is for my new computer. And it stems to two different issues I'd like to address.
- This computer has a bit of an annoying tendency to reboot without me telling it to. I could be in the middle of something, and then it just reboots on me. Is there a way to stop it from doing that?
- And this next issue involves me using Windows Movie Maker on it. I could've just opened a project and I get an error message saying the usual "Movie Maker has encountered a problem" stuff. I check the details of the error report, and it always ends up saying "ModName: gdiplus.dll". Now, I tried renaming it, but that caused issues with other things, so I renamed it back. Is there a way to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out. :)

I suppose, but is there a way to repair it without losing any of my files? I was in the process of moving the files I had on my sister's computer when that issue happened. She said she turned it off as usual, but when it was taking too long at the "Windows is shutting down..." screen, she turned it off by disconnecting the computer.

Try booting into the recovery console (boot from your XP disc) and repairing from there?

With regards to the reboot problem, are you always doing the same thing when it reboots?

My Installation disks were made by Acer and if I use the recovery console it wipes clean the first partition =| so yeah you can do the recovery box console thing its called an "in-place upgrade" it just makes your computer lose all its windows updates, thats what I can recall

I've been trying something like that thanks to the guidance of a member of the Janime forums, but the issue is that when I boot from my Windows XP CD, and then choose one of the options on the "Windows XP Setup" menu, the bottom gray bar says "Please wait", and then proceeds to say "Examining 38162 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on Bus 0 on atapi...", and it stays there. Hell, I had it on Thursday night through Friday evening, and it was still on the same thing...

Hard disk failure perhaps?

At that point, if the XP disk can't get any further, and it sees the hard drive, the only other thing you can do is check that the IDE Cable/Sata cable is not broken/damaged/loose. Otherwise, Jedi_Amara is probably right with a blown hard drive.

Well, I went to the Compaq support site and looked up the issue. One of the troubleshooting steps for it was to open up the computer and check those cables, which I did, and I disconnected and reconnected those cables. But it's still like that. *sigh* Well, I may as well invest in a network cable so I can transfer my files from that hard drive to this computer...
