Hi.

If you take a look at the 'last poster' field on any given day at the New User/Welcome forums, you'll find chain postings. It's nice that the same people like to welcome multiple people to the community.

However, It seems a bit pointless to reward a count to a post that isn't actually a real post. It seems like a target for easy post count milking. This is why I've stopped welcoming there, I'd rather have my post count represent good posts.

The post counts in the 'Fun time in Pokemon land' are disabled and I think this is the reason why. It seems appropriate to disable them in New Users/Welcome too.

Thanks for reading.

I doubt you'll get post count there disabled. Every time it's come up, the majority of people don't seem to like the idea.

Personally, I don't care if it's on or off there. I understand the arguments on both sides. Yes, just welcoming people constantly does come off as spammish and postcount milking. On the other side of the argument, there is a rule preventing the copying and pasting of posts just for post count, so it's not like people can completely abuse NU/W for posts. I modded NU/W over a year ago for at least three months or so, and it was really hard to not repeat welcomes or make them all sound the same. Which makes you wonder why I went though the trouble; I just felt that I'd be a crappy NU/W mod if I didn't welcome everyone. XD;
So it's not complete spam, especially if you take a moment to actually think about what to post. You can make a reply halfway decent if you actually read the thread and comment on it. That's my take on it, anyway.

I seriously don't care, but I just wanted to throw that out. :D

I'll make a proper signature when Pokecommunity gets a proper slogan

I admit to chain-posting in the NU section, but every one of my welcomes are different, minus ones where people give no indication to interests etc and it's not really possible. I do it mainly because I know I was in their position at one point, and it's always nice for someone to give you a warm welcome.

My vote goes to turning them off but then heaps of users will complain about their post count dropping heaps. :\

I'm also for turning off post counts. I haven't thought of any reason why they should be counted in that forum. Yes, some people do take the time to think up new posts for each thread that they post in, but other members don't. It's just the basic "Hi! Welcome! Read the rules and have fun! PM me if you want friends!" given all the time.

I don't see why posts have to count in the forum just to make the new members feel welcome. If people honestly cared about welcoming the new members in, then they will post in the section whether the posts count or not. (I've seen this done elsewhere.)

Really, all I'm asking for is to see the other reasons why post count should remain on in that section. Because as I said, I haven't thought of any solid reason.

I didn't even know that :0

Well, yeah, I've seen a fair share of people with, "Hi! Welcome to PC! Read the rules and have fun!"

And that's it for nearly all of their welcomes. sometimes it's necessary for the users who don't tell you much, but seeing the same welcome from somebody 20 times is a bit...well...it shouldn't add to posts :P

Does turning it off directly cause the post count drop, or would that only occur after a total post recount?

Since some forum servers do it the latter way, I'm just wondering what vB does.

I really don't know which to vote, I mean just like as everyone said, It just get spammy when the post counts go up, but then...it also makes the new users to NOT post there since because, new users like having their post counts go up, and if the NU/W Forum post has been disabled, it would make NU/W unattractive to new users, making it well, post-less o.o;;

I don't see why it matters. So it's a good way to raise your postcount, why do you find it such a problem?
Ok. You are an example. The post you just made were all about post-counts. That section is for welcoming people. Yar?

I see that you're all complaining about current members that post in there, but what about the new ones. I remember that an NU/W mod (I think it was Sorano), who said in a similar thread that removing post counts from this thread denies new users their first posts in the forum.

And I think you're all being awfully negative. I'm pretty sure many people post in there just so they can be welcoming - not everyone is as caught up with their post counts as you think they are. Sure, it's nice to see the post count rise ever so slowly, and there are people who abuse the forum for posts, but I believe that most members are better than that.

Yes i do sorta agree..
If we were to enable the post counts then we should make sensible posts, not only posts of like 10 words.
"Hi welcome to PC! Read the rules"
If we were to disable the post count there, i would'nt be disturbed, id be glad to still welcome the new comers.

Urgh...that's not what I meant. The section is for welcoming people, but why is it such a problem that you get a post at the same time?

Post counts shouldn't even really be worth much anyways... I used to be a top poster for a few months after I joined, but that was just my normal activity then (we weren't as big either). Now I have very few posts compared to people who have just been around for a few weeks, as I more rarely speak my opinion and attempt to make even more constructive posts then I have in the past the rare times I am on. And a lot of older threads are lost, and I requested my post count lowered by 5 or so to reach "666" once, too, but that's beside the point. People put way too much value into post count.

And because of that, I agree with shutting them off in the New Users section. It is a big (if not the biggest) farming spot for those who think highly of themselves just because of their post count, so they sit there and post the same general welcome post in every single thread without a glance to whom they're welcoming, Back in the day, I was actually welcomed sincerely and got a few friends out of the my starting post, which his how they should be. With post counts enabled, the forum will just continue to be a place to take advantage of newbies for personal ego growth via copy/paste responses.

Yes, but if the post feature is disabled, then the new users might get little or even no welcomings. How great of a way to start a new forum is that?

As I said, I got a sincere welcome before anyone on the forum cared about post counts.

Things would be much better with a few true welcomes than tons of Ctrl-V'ed ones.

And saying no one will welcome new people because of no post counts leads to an image that no one on Pokemon Community is nice, and that everyone here is just a post count egomaniac, which I doubt is a great way to have a forum, anyways.
