In your opinion, what modern convenience do you think this world can go without? There must be something you believe is highly useless, and deny it's role of comfort. :)

The Internet

My opinion, it would be Abortion
I'm not sure surgeries of that nature count as useless modern conveniences.

As for me, I'd say the bathroom button lock. What happened to the thing you just turn to lock? Now we have the button, which you can't even test, because when you try to, the door unlocks. I'd rather trade the fraction of a second it takes to just turn the thing for the security of knowing that no one's getting through this door, but apparently that's not good enough for our society.

Digital television. It could be phased out by the internet with its video sites and potential for making available downloads of every episode in any given series; and if you want to know the news or weather, newspapers have done that for a century if not longer. Oh, and video games? Computers do and have always done that better than any console.

The printer. I get a lot of homework that way. I'm dead serious.
The printing press is considered to be one of the greatest invention of this millenia... ~_~

List of the Top 10 Greatest Inventions

If something was so useless, it wouldn't be a modern convenience. So I can't really think of anything.

What I do find useless is using braille in silly places. I have nothing against braille or the disabled, but braille is used in London Aquarium. I don't mean to sound insensitive, but I can't imagine many blind people going to an aquarium. Besides the stingray pool, all they can get is a list of fish names.. O_o

Obviously, the cell phone.

Nothing annoys me more than people asking me why I don't have a cell phone, and pestering me to get one all the time, explaining that I need one. No, I don't need one, obviously. I've been doing fine without one for 17 years.

Excuse me for not liking anyone calling me when my phone is off to be redirected to a robotic space alien voice explaining that I'm not there and can't talk to them.

It's so personal when they do that.

Besides, who really needs to talk to their friend while walking up and down the aisles in Target?

thats true, I'll agree with the printer

Sure, let's get rid of the invention that allowed a mass amount of people to learn to read. :/ Without the printing press, books wouldn't have been mass-produced, and we'd all be sitting around copying books by hand.

Wait, I forgot. No one likes to read.

In my opinion, we can do away with the dishwasher. I don't get why people can't just wash their own dishes with their hands. You're cleaning up the same food that you just ate, people. It's not going to kill you if you touch it.

THE SPORK.

Seriously. Most of them don't even work as the fork part, like those little plastic ones with an end with just little points at the end, that can't actually pick anything up, and the ones with a functioning fork are horrible spoons, since the amount of room needed for a working fork puts holes large enough for anything requiring a spoon to run out.

The most useless invention would be the stupid floor in the airport that automatically moves for you. It doesn't make any sense at all, have we really got so lazy that we now can just stand somewhere and have the floor transport us from point A to point B.

Buses.

I really hate them, and they have crappy services. ;< And bus drivers are maniacs and always try and crash into me. And also, because everyone is trying to save the environment, everyone gets on them and it gets really crowded. D:

People can just bike or walk to wherever they want to go. :D

What about long distances, bad weather and unsafe biking roads, like the roads in many new suburbs, the ones that have the mcmansions.

The printer
That also means no manga, no magazines, no way to print out pictures that you can decorate your room with. Yeah, real smart

Obviously, the cell phone.
Same with me. I dont have one either and I'm 18. I hope I wont be forced to get one ever. I may though :/
it's just rude when you're hanging out with a friend you never see, and a friend calls who she sees every day and she totally ignores me.
plus, there's nothing like hearing a ringtone to make me get so mad I wanna eat the cell-phone.
Unfortunately, I may end up being stuck with one. But I get it, I swear I will never abuse it like most people I know do. I will have an oldschool ringtone, keep it off when I'm home and use it mainly for photography and pictures.

I'd have to say escalators if they count
Good point! They take forever and you cant just run up one if you want to get to a store so fast because then those stupid people will be like OMG Stop it! and I hate that!
It's one of the reasons that I think America is so fat. But it's just one out of like fifteen.

I actually have to disagree with you on buses. Even though I hate them with a blinding passion I still wish for them to exist.

My case here is that I hate buses to. I read in a news paper that the bus drivers run red lights and start charging for people crossing the street honking their horns. The bus driving company defended the drivers saying that the Drivers can't do anything on their route but drive and do nothing else. Does that mean you are allowed to put people's live in jeopardy?

Anyway I still want buses to exist for several reasons. One I use the bus. I use the bus because I need to get around town fast and in order to get to school I need to go up a very large and steep hill. If I try to walk or bike up it I will lose almost 3 times as much time and energy as I would have saved by taking the bus.

Two handicapped people need to go somewhere fast to. They work as well and some of them are in wheel chairs who can't walk or drive. So they obviously need to use the bus.

Bare in mind I will rejoice when I am able to drive. Since I will never take the bus again.

Ontopic I have to agree with Escalators and Sporks. Escalators are just crowds moving upwards and Sporks are just plain useless. Learn to use both the fork and a Spoon
1. Cell phones - yah I know everybody's gotta have one, but I am so sick of seeing people yak and yak on them when on the road, and in stores, and such. (they even do it when roaring right past people at 90mph on the freeway!)

2. SUVs - Why does everybody have to have 'em? No wonder we're "running out of oil"!

3. Digital Television - Even though by law we in US have to have all television broadcasts in digital only, I just can't really see how it's "so much better"-especially in rural areas where broadcast signals tend to be weak. When a signal for digital television is weak (either because of distance from the transmitter or terrain difficulties), the picture can "block up" (like digital video) and even freeze momentarily. I'd rather have a picture with a bunch of white "sparks" flying around and "twisters" and all that than have a constantly freezing and blocky picture.
Also the thing about "public safety" is a bunch of bunk. Aren't our public safety agencies already doing fine with existing specturm?

4. Digital Cinema - I don't really see how it's so much better than film. In fact, when I saw a movie in a digital cinema system, I just about had eye strain!

5. Corn-base Ethanol - Yah, I know it isn't really a convenience and we need to use much more alternative fuels, but how can something that takes just as much (or more) energy to make than it puts out, and distorts the food market by taking corn supplies and farmland away to use for ethanol really be that great? Just another bondoggle to benefit farming corporations and the politicians who back them.

...and all these other things like iPods, PDAs, and similar portable electronics, we can do fine without.

But people with Dial-up internet cant watch TV unless the Cable Companys becom free and place some USB/Firewire plugs in the floor so you can connect the "TV" in to your computer.

Windows PCs. Macs are so mush easier and faster to use.
There is a long winding debate about Macintosh and Windows. They both offer different things for different people. I personally dislike Macintosh due to Safari (Worst browser ever) and its interface is far different from what I am accustomed to. Macs don't use the same hotkeys that Windows does. Like if I want to copy and paste something (Which is something I do on an hourly basis) I would normally highlight the text and press CTRL C. Then press CTRL V. But with Macintosh I need to manually press the control button and click on paste or copy.

I only use Macs during school when I do graphic work since Macs are built more for design use. My PC is more for recreational use since I use it for browsing the internet and playing games. I have done both things on both computers and I have to say that browsing and playing games was much easier to do on the PC

As with the Cell Phone and MP3 discussion. Cell phones are more for people who spend a lot of time away from the home and need to talk to people. I know people who need to use Cell Phones to make important calls every day. With MP3's I know we don't need them but I still like to use mine on a regular basis since it makes several boring situations fun.
