Fakemon in Fanfiction: Good or Bad?

As long as it's done correctly, then I see no problem in it. However, I do prefer to see them in a fic with a region to match the Fakemon rather than shoving them into a pre-existing region.

But...I liked it the way it was...;_;

Eh, now that I think about it, it wasn't great. I'm horrible at writing about big cities...closest Annapolis has to a 'city' is a (rather lovely) historical downtown district...I need to spend a day in DC or Baltimore...
While I'm sorry to hear about the deletion, I always think of this kinda thing as a good thing. It forces you to review what you're doing, and you can always write it better. As you've said, you weren't entirely satisfied, so... Good luck with the rewrite! *thumbs up*

No, seriously. This oughta be fun for you. Rewrites tend to be. =D

Fakemon in Fanfiction: Good or Bad?
Agreed with the others. If it's done correctly (described well -- because, as BnB has stated, we don't know what your fan creation looks like) and if there's a good reason for it, by all means, go for it. And by "good reason," I mean "this Pokemon can't just be (insert other Pokemon here)" or "this Pokemon is some arbitrary preevolution or evolution of an already existing Pokemon." All too often, I've seen people use what are essentially canon Pokemon with different names or random evolutions that really have no significance whatsoever, other than the fact that the author felt like giving X Pokemon an evolution. For example, not naming names, but I once read a fic in which someone used a Fire-type horse that had essentially the same attacks as Ponyta... but it wasn't Ponyta. To this, I had to tilt my head and quirk an eyebrow because stuff like that just sort of makes no sense to me. Why go through the extra effort to create a brand-new Pokemon that's obviously just another canon Pokemon if you have that canon Pokemon available to you? We had a lovely argument about this. I'm sorry to anyone who's a fan of the Pokemon in question, but let's face it. The Pokemon world doesn't often double-up on Pokemon concepts to the point where even the appearances are the same. </old rant>

Alternatively, the random evolutions. Personally, I go with the Chekov's Gun train of thought when it comes to Fakemon. If you mention it in Act I, it had better be used by Act III. And in some cases I've read, it isn't. Like, "Here's a random preevolution of a Pokemon! This is probably the last you'll hear from it other than random trainers." *facepalm*

My other policy is just that when in doubt, just use a canon Pokemon. I don't really have much of a problem with fan-created Pokemon if they fulfill a purpose that no other Pokemon can fill. It's just that if you're going to give your character a Fakemon for the sake of giving them a Fakemon, it tends to stick out, in my opinion, unless you've got a completely new region that you're writing about. So, if you want a Fire-type starter, unless you're in a new region, you've got four to choose from at the very minimum (if you don't want to choose a nontraditional starter). Why go with something else?

However, on a very disjointed note compared to the rest of this highly ranty post, the exception, as I've stated before, is a new region. If you're doing a new region, it's just sort of expected that you're going to have Fakemon up the wazoo. Then, the problem becomes whether or not you're coming up with creative ideas. We've seen so many other Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh region knock-offs already, so as the creator of a new region, you've got to take into consideration that you'll want to make this region something different, first off. For example, maybe a desert region that actually has fake Pokemon, unlike Orre. Or an Arctic region. In any case, that's your base, and from there, create new Pokemon to populate it. You can use canon Pokemon, yes, but if your region is completely in the mountains, it's fine if you want a bear. Just as long as it's not another Ursaring.

That's the thing about Pokemon, really. Yes, you can always reuse concepts (like the fact that there's been how many cat-like Pokemon?), but with Pokemon, you've got seventeen types, a plethora of moves, and the permission to make your designs as WTF-worthy as possible. Create something new.

So, Fakemon aren't bad, I think, if they're new regions or otherwise justified. In fact, by all means, if you're creative enough to come up with something, go for it. It's just that so many people just rehash, go off canon ideas, or plop Fakemon in for no apparent reason (even if the story takes place in a canon region) that it's getting to be a little irritating. If you want a Fakemon, at least do your job and make it creative, interesting, not (insert canon Pokemon here), and actually an element that serves a purpose in your story, I think.

Sorry about the long and possibly heavily babbling rant.

Speaking as a person who lives right next to DC, I would not recommend visiting it unless you're into museums or baseball. (Nationals' Park is friggin' sweet. Too bad the Nats suck. *headdesk*) They say that DC is a place that has the charm of the North and the productivity of the south, so be ready for the worst of both worlds!

Fakemon in Fanfiction: Good or Bad?
I'm okay with them as long as they're describe well and not really knockoffs of the canon Pokemon as Jax said.

As for another bear Pokemon and such, I won't mind, actually. Seriously, in our world we have hundreds kinds of bears, dogs, etc. True, Pokemon can be more than just animal creatures, like robots. However, I'm fine with another cat Pokemon, as long as it's not like exactly like Persian or Delcatty in terms of attacks, looks, etc.

Huh, the cat Pokemon so far are all normal types, but at least they have a few different attacks from each other...XD;

Fakemon in Fanfiction: Good or Bad?
Hm. Well, seeing as I've been considering doing a new-region fanfic (Kailou is gonna be sweet), I'm not sure I can judge this objectively. But the one thing I see with fakemon that really bugs me is just flat-out bad designs. It looks like the person leaned back for a moment, thought up a random Pokemon, and started typing again. Trust me from experience when I say this - it takes a long time to create a fakemon. They undergo some serious design changes during their life. Nearly every fakemon I'v created has had a major appearance morph.

Grullora - a grass-type coyote kind of thing - started out looking like a Grass-type Vulpix. Since then, it's grown a small mane of grass-fur, a more doggy tail, a longer nose, and an attitude. Glistel and Gliscail - a duo of legendary Pokemon - started out as obvious Mew/Mewtwo ripoffs, but have changed to look not so much like the original mammal Legends. Cublaze - a fire tiger - went from four legs, to two legs, to four legs again, and now looks like a teddybear-esque stuffed tiger.

So yeah, I fume when I see a fakemon that has had no effort put into its creation. Oh, and bad/stupid/unoriginal names grate on my nerves, too.

Another thing, to add on to the fakemon discussion, is the fact that becasue there are 492 Pokemon and the newer ones are starting to lack creativity, it will be even harder to pull an idea for a fakemon, that doesn't resemble a Pokemon already made. Yes, maybe five to ten, but to fill a whole new region, you must be dedicated to writing a fic of a new region and filling it with creative fakemon. I just think that, in my opinion, most writers will not commit to creating a region fill of new Pokemon, with good designs. That's just me.

It was easier when it was just 250, it is much harder now.

Fakemon in Fanfiction: Good or Bad?

Fakemon, is he a friend of Agumon's?

I partially agree with bobandbill, if there are new Pokemon, there'd better be a good reason for it. Aside from that, I'm generally opposed to using Fakemon. It's as if 450-something aren't enough. (I actually keep having to remind myself that the number is greater than 250.)
But would you want to use all 450 in regions that don't fit it? That decreases the number even more.

I have a few Fakemon so I can't be impartial to it, but if they are well done and well described, I see no problem.

Not necessarily. Put it this way: there's only 493 Pokemon. (Don't forget Arceus!) There's billions upon billions of different species in the real world. With insects alone, you've got God knows how many more species than there are Pokemon -- and that's not even just restricting the count to Bug-types, if that makes sense. The problem is that people keep looking at the large numbers and the designs that Nintendo's coming up with, and they're thinking, "Well, this has already been done, so I can't do it anymore." To tell you the truth, that's just plain the wrong mindset. There's tons of ideas Nintendo hasn't even touched upon. House fly Pokemon? Mosquito Pokemon? Flea Pokemon? Leaving insects, what about lynxes, flatworms, iguanas, flamingoes? Stegosaurus! Saber-toothed tiger! Tasmanian devil! What about plants? We've never really had a fern Pokemon, haven't we? Or a clover Pokemon, for that matter. And don't forget the inanimate objects too! What about a paper Pokemon? A lamp? A box? And there's tons of legends that haven't been used yet. Tengu? Mermaid? Heck, you could even do a kraken if you wanted (considering Octillery =/= squid).

And even then, Nintendo's already given you permission to double up on animals as long as you don't essentially rip off another Pokemon. After all, Meowth's not a Glameow, but they're both house cats. What about doing another bear, as I've said before? Or maybe a different breed of dog or fish. No one's done a clown fish yet, and even then, we could come up with a carp more useful than Magikarp.

How many ideas have I come up with so far? Twenty-two. And trust me, it didn't take that long to think of ideas.

It's not difficult or time-consuming to create a new concept that hasn't been used, I think. The problem is that the fans are losing a lot of creativity, they're getting lazy, or they're feeling intimidated by the mounting numbers of canon Pokemon and regions. Whatever's the problem, they're hitting obstacles, and they're not thinking of ways to get around them, which is a sad thing for any fandom. I don't think you need to be dedicated to come up with 100 new ideas. If I've come up with over twenty concepts in five minutes, then it shouldn't be a problem to come up with eighty more. Sure, you need to fill out the rest and develop a Pokemon, but as long as you've got a concept, the rest should be fairly easy. (If you'd like, I could offer descriptions of five of the ones I've just pulled out of my rear as examples. All you need is a visual and behavioral description and a few ideas for a movepool to get your Fakemon across in fanfiction. It's not like you're trying to create a hack. *shrug*)

lol at the blue screens, I hate those things. They always seem to occur at the worst moment. I have an Acer Aspire 5315, and there was a BIOS update that I was unaware about. The computers had a problem with overheating. Then fans would fail to kick on after the computer was in standby. The stupid thing would just shut off once it got to hot. Usually happened when I was typing a response to the forum. So I have lost work, but never more than half a page, until now.

I have a program that monitors my computer temperature now. Once, before I got the update, the system temperature hit 96 degrees Celsius. That's 204 degrees Fahrenheit. I’m really lucky that the computer did not suffer any damage.

@ Jax Malcolm - Yeah, exactly. I mean, they still haven't done a dolphin or electric eel; both fairly obvious choices for Water-types. There are still lots of types left for Eeveelutions, as long as they're done well (I designed a knight-like Steel-type Eeveelution...^^) Then there's the thousands of mythic creatures they still haven't touched - gryphon Pokemon, anyone? What about a Rock-type gargoyle that learns Water Gun as a novelty? Or a hydra? (Ooh, I wanna see that...)

And most of the names that people invent for their fakemon are just...horrendous. Thruthfully, some of the official names are horrendous too (some of the 4th gen names made me go "whut? o.o"), but...well...yeah. Names have always been a problem for fakemon. I'm still trying to figure out final names for my FireDragon/IceDragon/ElectricDragon Legendary trio...the current ones are Vulmandrax, Nidhralore and Thoraisune.

This is kinda off-topic, so I'll move on...

And also in reference to many types you didn't think had been used, one of my Fakemon is pretty much a huge tree(in a more complex form).

Do want. An origami Pokemon would be the definition of epic. I'd say let it be able to fold itself into the likeness of any other Pokemon, a la Ditto's "transform". Or just make it able to give really bad papercuts.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You just gave me inspiration/reminded for the fire type I needed (read the message I sent you - you'll understand).
o.o You're welcome. Will get to it in a moment. =3

And also in reference to many types you didn't think had been used, one of my Fakemon is pretty much a huge tree(in a more complex form).
Nice. With other Pokemon living in it? 8D

Do want. An origami Pokemon would be the definition of epic. I'd say let it be able to fold itself into the likeness of any other Pokemon, a la Ditto's "transform". Or just make it able to give really bad papercuts.
...Now I kinda want to use this idea. XD Giving other Pokemon really bad paper cuts as a form of battling? Win!
Professional ninja. May or may not actually be back. Here for the snark and banter at most.

Need some light reading?
Anima Ex Machina (Chapter 20 now available)
The Leaf Green Incident (SWC 2012 winner)
Braid (Creepypasta apparently)
