I didn't really feel one way or the other about Jar-Jar, to be honest. I wouldn't mind if he wasn't there, but I don't mind that he is. :/

Jar Jar epitomized the general redirection of the Star Wars series from telling a story to selling a franchise. He was in the movie so that toys could be made of him, which younger moviegoers would then beg their parents to get them. This trend continued as the droids changed from mindless killing machines to comic relief, and has reached its highest note in the form of the Clone Wars cg show.

Either that or I'm just paranoid. Or perhaps my stomach acid has reached the inner chamber of my netbook's battery. Ooh, tingly...

EDIT: Did I tell you guys that people are stealing my art and trying to pass it off as their own, even though it has my name on it?

That's true to an extent. You have to realize that George Lucas is now a husband and parent, so his works are going to cater towards children a bit more than they would if he was younger and single. He's also very rich. Like, filthy rich. Because of this he has to finance all films he works on basically out of his own pockets, so shameless merchandising is a means to work some more money back that the films might not be as capable in doing.

Finally, we're all older. This is more true for the generation that was actually young enough to watch Star Wars when it came out in theatres, whom are all now adults, but it can be applied to us to a certain degree as well. What all those older fans don't seem to realize is that the original trilogy was basically an intelligent movie aimed at teenagers and young adults, and with the Ewoks, children. Now that they're older they only watch those old movies through nostalgia glasses so they don't see that, but with the new ones they're all annoyed that they don't cater to their adult intellects. But in reality Lucas is simply doing as he did before, although a bit more obvious.

Call me a cynic, but telling a story is often selling a story. That's what Star Wars the Original Trilogy was - otherwise any profit over and above paying for the necessities of those who get the profit would have been donated. They've just diversified. ;o It's a matter of the extent to which they've sold out. I didn't mind the comic relief, tbh. I would have preferred the more subtle nature of the old series, though. :s

I have no opinion on Jar Jar Binks, nor any other part of this discussion, because I gave up on Star Wars half-way through the first movie. [reclines in her folding lawn chair] I have no idea what you guys are talking about, kukuku~

I wouldn't call it cynicism, but logic and reality... Sure there are those who want to show their art, but in the end, we'd like to be fed... So...

Gattaca was very good. But I'm afraid to say that I've had enough of it... >.>
We've been watching it every day in school for the last two weeks. Grrrrr!

[EDIT:] Gattaca was made by ein Kiwi, apparently.

Do any of you see the similarities of the original trilogy to the war where the Americans kicked the Brits out? And the American Civil War with the next three?

I was agreeing with you, lol. Anyway, I like some history, namely the world wars and anything to do with ancient Japan, but otherwise meh.

Ah, I see. I thought that you thought that I was being sarcastic.

How many people here find it easier to write when they have some sort of animal on them/their chair/bed/couch/floor/anyplace nearby?
      (Not bold!)

Right, I'm off for now. I'll be back around ~11:00 NZ time.

Oh gawds, I want HG/SS to be here too! D:

I pretty much love history. My favorite time periods are the World Wars, ancient China, ancient and feudal Japan, the Imperialism era, and the Crusades. No wonder I enjoyed writing NE a lot (loads of historical references that have been Pokemonized).

On La Pompa's question, haha it depends. If my kitty jumps on the desk and starts stepping on the keyboard, no. However, if he sleeps peacefully on my lap, on the carpet, or on my bed, then I'm able to write peacefully.

NZ history is the most BORING thing ever! We had a few land wars, and a Treaty, and that was pretty much it.

^This. I'm glad I'll be doing an internationally assessed subject of history, so I won't have to do ours. ;D

Also, to steer this thread back on topic,

What kind of atmosphere do you like to create in your fic (overall)?

Depends what genre I'm writing. For instance, for comedy a very lighthearted atmosphere. If I'm writing suspense, the atmosphere would be more intense and fast paced.

Is it weird that American history is the only history I actually enjoy learning?

Eh. For the most part, the scene carries the atmosphere. In normal atmospheres, though, I tend to keep a very light, happier tone. Dark, tense stuff can be really fun to write, though - it seems I enjoy putting my characters through some awful stuff. xD

I actually quite like US history. :< Far, far more interesting than New Zealand's. :<

What kind of atmosphere do you like to create in your fic (overall)?
In my current fic, the atmosphere is quite dark, as the setting is rife with lust for power and corruption. A lot of the time it's quite tense, although I did introduce a character a few chapters back who lightens the mood a bit more. :3

            @Lana and Citrinin

Having read many books on just how screwed up our history actually is, and how the government re-writes the textbooks to leave out the real history (makes us seem like Japan and their censorship!) I've grown bored of American history. I prefer ancient history and mythology, and anything post WWI isn't that fun.

Somehow I figured there was some sort of editing involved.

But anyways. I agree with you: ancient history and mythology are definitely my preferred social studies subjects (though mythology can sometimes fall under literature, which may be part of the reason I enjoy it so much...).

I prefer ancient history and mythology because there's rarely a distinction. Orwellian re-writing has gone on since before we even developed a written language, with the "truth" that was presented becoming the fact of history. It's all mythological. Our history will one day be the mythology of our descendants, so I give our distant past a little more credit. Modern history has no excuse.

What kind of atmosphere do you like to create in your fic (overall)?
I opt for something a little more surreal. Not so much creating an alternate world where physics and magic collide or anything, but where the way I narrate and focus on characters' inner thoughts gives the a world a more personal feel. I like writing solipsism, basically.

What kind of atmosphere do you like to create in your fic (overall)?

A dark, ominous, or otherwise, suspicious atmosphere... I want to leave the reader guessing, and saying out loud "Oh my god!".

As for the correct answer to my earlier question, a correct answer to a meaningful relationship to Pokemon, would have to include these three things:

The physical, the subjective, and the behavioral.

                Some of theses are obvious:

                Physical: Game, anime, friends etc

Behavioral: Playing the game, watching the anime (self explanatory, basically actions that would fulfill the relationship).

What some of you forgot to mention, is the correlation, or the subject matter, that made it that way for you.

Namely, how you felt about playing it, When watching the anime, you feel connected with the character, etc...

This is the sort of relationship I was looking for, someone to answer (in that fashion, not those exact words).

Otherwise, if you were missing any of these three, it would only be an association.

Also to point out, there is no de-association or non-relationship, it is either one or the other...
