That comic describes the sad truth that is acceptance of anime now-a-days. I just don't get why us fans are criticised so much by the general public for liking it. I can't buy anime without my parents raising an eyebrow and commenting on it like I'm some freak. It's really frustrating. >>;

xD, I have similar situation, except it's with Manga.

"Why not buy an American comic book?"
"Your entire allowance on a book you can read in a day!?"
"Dude, that book is backwards..."

My friends plague me with those comments constantly >_>

My parents almost encouraged me to grab that stuff lol and it's pretty accepted where I live so I really don't get bothered like what's in that comic.
Only when I was younger my friends would be all, "LOL BEEG EYEZ ^___^" until I got them into it.

The stuffs' addicting--but now I have moved on.
I try to appreciate many things because I feel too closed minded for giving too much attention to anime/manga. While I wouldn't give much thought to other things when they'd be equally or even more enjoyable than anime/manga.

My observation (I'm from the US) is that most people don't seem to pay attention to ~animation~ for adolescents.
Most of "cartoons" are either targeting to kids or oh-babeh hrhr adults while there's some stuff for teens but other types of shows overshadow.
Anime in general targets anyone but unfortunately, it's been pushed to either kids or adults in other places.
Although I assume that people think adults are acceptable to like that stuff in a fashion people view superhero fans.

And yeah, I felt it at times, "Gosh I'm looking at googly eyed people with often static movement." I could understand how other people may find it strange. The worst thing unfamiliars could do is actually look at the fanbase. To me, I think the fanbase is stranger than others if I put on my sane goggles.

Honestly, I think that comic pretty much defines what people think about with anime. I mean seriously why can't people mind their own dang buisness about what other's watch. I mean seriously, if they don't like it they should keep it to themselves.

... indeed... people think this is too childish, and I hate them for saying that! Most of my classmates think Im stupid and childish, just because I love to read mangas and watch animes... they would never believe that there are people much older than me, which like that too.

And we are not childish and stupid!!!

Yeah it's been like that for so long. But it's funny when people look at my anime/manga fandoms, the first thing that comes to their mind. Pokemon. Dude, the world isn't just Pokemon anymore. There's more things that Pokemon. And I remember some person looked at my Code Geass wallpaper and the first thing they said "lol you watch Pokemon." wtf.... >>; I guess this means that, there were some people that actually did like Pokemon, but they chose the same thing, move on. And the only thing that is probably in their minds is Pokemon. Now they just watch shows that has something to do with p*** and the teachers don't even care if they do. And they tell me to get a life because of something I like and it's animation, they need to get a life because they have no intention of leaving me alone.

And yes the same thing with the ratings as well. Yes anime is mostly targeted to adults, some to children but not a lot. Yes some people say that you still watch cartoons and think you are a little kid. So I guess it's the same thing as saying "Oh so you watch Hulk/Iron Man/Spiderman/ect and so you're a little kid." And yes I know they were made into real life but come on, seriously, nobody, like really, ever pays attention to the really really old cartoons of superheroes. I mean yes, they are trying their best to make it alive again, but still, it's gone, move on. There's more to life than just superhero cartoons.

I hope that wasn't off topic, but yeah I understand how life for us anime/manga fans are like. Next time when someone saids that to me, I should say "OMG you still watch superhero movies :D"

I don't get much of this where I live. Whenever I go to pick up an anime box set or a couple of volumes of my favorite manga, it's rare for me to get a negative comment about what I'm doing. Sure, there's the occasional critique from the fellow anime fan, or even a question as to what the series I'm picking up is about, but almost never a rude statement. I guess people just learned not to care as much about what others are doing when it comes to the subject, (where I live, at least.)

My parents have always been cool with it. They let me import anime from Amazon back when it was impossible to find any recent titles in stores where I lived. I think they realized pretty quick that the Pokémon thing wasn't just a fad. :P They were supportive when I became a Japanophile and wanted to learn the language and drove me to Saturday school for it, and they even introduced me to anime cons (read about them in the paper and went with me to 'em). My dad teases at times, calling cons a congregation of crazy people (which is pretty on the ball XD) and he calls my manga smut because the first one I got was Love Hina and he happened to open it to a pretty suggestive page, haha. But overall, they really don't care.

As for others... they've been really tolerant of it too, I suppose. The only people who ever really made fun of me for liking anime, still being into Pokémon, etc. were just trying to get a reaction out of me. They were just bullies who failed at it because I knew they didn't really care what I liked and I didn't care if they cared anyway. :/ I definitely didn't hide the fact that I liked anime/manga in high school and I didn't need to. If people didn't like it, they kept to themselves and if they did like it or were interested, we'd talk about it.

Not to mention people really can't pull the "cartoons are for children!" card anymore--some of the most popular shows on TV today are cartoons and they aren't aimed at children. Family Guy, I'm looking at you. :/

8| I always hope I'll get weird looks when I go into TRU or somewhere and buy Pokémon stuff but they all either don't care or figure I'm buying for someone else. *shrug*

If people comment to me I tend to go off. I tell them that I like what I like and I do not care what they think. I also tell them that I am not gonna to hide my likes or pretend I do not like it because of what someone may think. I am more likely to meet other anime fans if I am myself and express my true interests. I am proud to be an anime/manga fan. I just do not care what people say about it because I am just being me.

Hmm, i guess there's also there's also that part where some anime/manga fans tend to be extremely shy of their fandom. Example, whenever i walk into the manga section of a bookstore, i tend to see maybe one person there, and they walk off whenever i enter the section. Whether they're ashamed or something i dunno, but that comic's pretty much what people have burned into their minds of what other people think about anime and manga

Me, parents don't really mind what i do

Haha, I get stuff like that from my parents and family all the time. My dad especially, he assumes all anime is pornographic and full of nuidty and crap like that, only because he hears about that type of thing in the news occasionally. As for friends, all of my friends like anime, sooo I haven't had any problems there XD

As far as buying anime goes, that happens to me a good bit. I buy the majority of my anime at Best Buy or off of Amazon. Whenever I go to the anime aisle at Best Buy, there usually is somebody else standing there looking, but whenever they look up and see me coming down it they usually hurry off somewhere else, or try to make it look like they were just walking by. I guess they're just ashamed of it, which I find kind of sad.

Well, I tend to hang out with two different groups of people. One of which, my video game obsessed/comedy loving group, tend to make fun at my obsession with Anime as well as the Japanese culture. They call it my "Noki Noki Fun time Show obsession". The other group, apply named the "Otaku" group, obviously do not make fun of my interests as they share it as well, perhaps even more so than I.

I tend to keep my Japan interests and my other interests separate if possible. It makes life a lot easier that way. Am I saying I'm ashamed of my obsession? No! Of course not. It's just easier to talk about Anime, Manga, and the like with fellow enthusiasts.

My parents are alright with my interests. I mean, they buy me Japanese things for Christmas. I believe they thought it was just a phase, as it did start with Pokémon. But, phases don't usually last this long, do they? :P
Also, I think I know why a lot of people walk away from the anima and manga aisles when other fans walk by. I don't believe it's a matter of shame, as much as it is a matter of "noobness". I know that a lot of people who do stay in the aisles with me end up sparking up a conversation. If you're a novice about Japanese culture or the anime world, you might get caught with the proverbial "egg on your face". I know I tend to leave the aisles because I’ll be the first to tell you, I don't know as much about anime as I would like to.

I suppose I just wanted to put my two cents in. ;)

If anyone ever tries the "cartoons are for kids" strategy with me, I swear that I'm gonna pull a Light Yagami and shove a copy of Death Note into their hands while laughing hysterically. That, or Fullmetal Alchemist. Or any other anime I know of that has a storyline that runs far too deep for most kids to appreciate. Honestly, I'm pretty sure that even if the mangaka had "the young" in mind as the audience for Death Note, he didn't intend ten year old kids to be reading about Light and his demon friends as they attempt to save the world by killing everyone. (Good stuff, good stuff).

Yeah, my parents were ragging on me for a long time about the amount of time I spent reading manga or watching anime, but they backed off once I showed them my 4.0 average for the school year and got them interested in the films of Hayao Miyazaki. My younger sisters are now addicted, especially the older one (i.e., the middle child of my family). I found out that she read the first chapter of Death Note and apparently loves it, even though I didn't think she was the type to like the whole psychological warfare aspect of the series. Who knew?

I officially would like to ask everyone who thinks that manga is stupid to kindly share their own interests, since I can easily point out that virtually anything we do to occupy our time is futile in the end, since we all die anyway.

I'm a little morbid like that, I suppose.

That comic pretty much sums up what is anime to the general public, they say its childish and stupid because childish anime like Pokemon, DBZ, Naruto, and Digimon are the most popular ones and people think these are the ones people actuall watch.

Id like you to tell if animes like Elfen Lied, Code Geass, and other bloody and gorey anime are childish...

Good for you! This is the same feeling for me. Well my parents tell me it is for kids. Well back then all I watched was Pokemon, Digimon, Dragonball Z, and Sailor Moon. They thought it was childish. They didn't understand. I think now they understand. But I live by myself, so I don't have to worry about them criticize it anymore. =D I still love them very, very much though. :3 And my friends, I have a few that are anime/manga fans as well. Others are not, but they understand I am into that stuff. They don't criticize me for it. ^^

So that comic is true for me too.

That's true. But they don't like anime or Manga. They love games from Japan and all... but only when they're in English. You know what I mean?

Yeah, my parent's sometimes get on me because they want me to leave the house more... but my grades are good and animé doesn't completely run my life, so I don't see any problems.

I only go into the anime section when either there's nobody around or there's an adult I don't know looking at it also. You can avoid public humiliation that way.

lol, one time I was watching Inyuasha on the CN and my mom walked in and said "Wow, Pokemon isn't for kids anymore?"
Or something to that effect...

it's because of a certian species called the "Wapanese" there was a time where anime was widely accepted, untill the first one came out of it's hole and found the internets. they take anime too seriously and annoy other people to no end.

To this day when you say anime, a person thinks Anime=Wapanese=Annoying=Hate. and thats why a lot of people hate anime.
This is me on a rainy day.
