The only way to increase the chance of finding a shiny is through Chaining which involves using the Pokeradar. To make it short, the more you constantly encounter the same pokemon using the radar, the more likely you are to find a shiny of it (chaining). If you break the chain (encounter a different pokemon), you have to start all over again. The chance of finding a shiny stops increasing at a chain of 40.

This is also answered in the FAQ if this makes no sense.

Yes, every time you encounter another chained pokemon, your chances of getting a shiny go up.
the best is 40, which is 1:2 i think.

This should've been asked in FAQ though
Actually, it's more like a chain of 40= 1/200

It has to be chaining only. GOD I hate chaining. It is so freaking annoying. I never get past 4. >___________>

I've managed a few successful chains, but my last one for shinx after reaching a chain of 40, took me over 100 super repels to go through to find the first shiny, so if a shiny is 1/200 at 40, is it 1 in ever 200 resets, or 1 in every 200 patches?
Successful Chains so far: Pidgey x4, Starly x1, Staravia x6, Cubone x3, Magnemite x2, Shinx x4, Skitty x3, Machoke x2(Semi-Request), Bellsprout x4, Eevee x1, Chansey x2, Zubat x15, Absol x1

Ah, okay. Sweet :D My biggest chain is like 8 or 9 or something, I guess I'll just keep working on it then.
BTW; You're always supposed to enter the patch of grass that's the furthest away from you, right?
Sorry for the questions, it's just that I've always been a bit unsure about chaining.

I don't get the chaining, are you supposed to stop using the pokéradar after 40? or how do you change your routine after 40 chains?
You can use the radar as high as you want. But the chance of finding a shiny stops increasing at 40. Once you reach 40, you just keep resetting the radar until a shiny patch appears. If you don't run out of max repels or break your chain, you can find as many shinies of a certain pokemon (that's chainable) as you want.

EDIT:

Yeah, farthest patch increases your chances of finding the same pokemon.

So you mean that when I reach 40 Pokémon, I should avoid facing Pokémon and just run the 100 steps or whatever it is and use it, then repeat until there is a shiny patch?

also, if you breed a shiny pokemon the baby has a better cance of being shiny. umm, this is just something I heard somewhere and it would help if a moderator or someone folowed up on this...

as to the privious post, you don't have to walk the 50 steps again, in fact I think that breaks your chain. after you defeat a pokemon you encountered with the pokeradar it will reactivate automaticaly. the grass farthest from you will most likely have the same pokemon you had just encountered.

Yeah, that's the idea. But make sure you have alot of Max Repels to keep the chain from breaking

That used to be the case for G/S/C, since shininess was determined by IV's. But not anymore.

It is much safer to reset rather than run into another patch. And resetting the radar does not break your chain unless it says "The grassy patch remained quiet". And that only happens when you reset the radar at the edge of a patch area.

And i suppose this pokeradar method can't be done in caves so if u wanna shiny from a cave you have to be Super lucky?
That's right. Chaining can only be performed with patches of grass. So Pokemon found in caves and water cannot be chained.

Hello. I'm new to this Forum. But I was wondering something about shinies. I caught a shiny lairon on Pokemon Emerald. It's a level 40. I was wondering if it evolves, will it evolve to shiny Aggron or a regular Aggron? Just want to make sure, because this is my first ever shiny.
when you have a shiny pokemon it will evolve into it's next form still shiny
once a shiny always a shiny
