Last night I managed to chain to 40 dittos for the first time using the pokeradar (my previous best chain was 35 and that took me enough attempts to get!) anyhoo, I started resetting the radar to tray and get a shiny and eventually I got one! Result! my first shiny on my game that I actually caught for myself, I reset the radar a load more times and ran into shiny number two, I was pretty happy at this point! Then I keep going for number 3 and out of nowhere the game just...freezes, no sound, no buttons responding, nothing! I'm gutted as all my effort was wasted and I'll probably never chain to 40 for weeks! So If anyone feels like adding a kind word, donating me a shiny ditto or answering one of the following questions I'll be most grateful!

1) Has this happened to anyone else?

2) Does anyone know the odds of running into a shiny at different chain lengths (e.g the odds at 5, 10, 15, 20 etc....)

3) For those of you that have run into shinies whilst chaining, at 40 how long has it taken for you to see the shiny patch? I'd used about 30 max repels before it appeared and then another 30 or more for the second, I'm just wondering if it's normally shorter or longer...

I've had 3 shiny Pokemon appear for me before a chain of 40, first time was my first chained shiny at a chain of 35 Pidgey, then a very lucky one at a chain of 9 Starly and finally yesturday I got a shiny Absol at a chain of 39.
Its all about luck really, by the time I got the shiny Absol I had about 67 super repels left, and I got through them all without any more shiny patches appearing, however last week I did a chain of Zubat and shinies were plentiful (One straight after another at one point). From my knowledge once a chain gets to 40 it becomes 1/200 to find a shiny, but I'm not sure whether that is 1/200 resets or 1/200 patches.
Something I have adopted to my chaining now is saving after I catch every shiny, Sadly it won't get your Dittos back but best to be prepared for next time.

3 shinies before 40! That would be a dream come true for me! I always hope but it never happens!

Have you got any chaining tips that I might find useful as you seem to have chained a lot of shines!

Also, doesn't saving whilst chaining break your chain?

I was quite worried that it might, but I had to try (as I didn't like wasting repels because I'm always skint) but no, saving doesn't break the chain, you just can't (obviously) reset and start the chain from where you saved xD.
My chaining tips are pretty much:
• Patience is key, even if the patch looks perfect it isn't 100% likely to have your Pokémon so it is still down to luck.
• Step counting - this is very important as you probably already do it but taking gambles is never a wise idea, foolishly breaking a chain at 38 is never nice ;)
• And finally still on the subject of step counting, there are two common techniques out there: "Go to the patch that is furthest away" and "Go to the patch on the 4th 'ring'", my advise is to combine those and only go for Patches if they are both the furthest away and on the 4th 'ring', and never go to patches if the furthest is equidistant to another.

Sorry for the long rant, just thought I ought to try to make it as clear as possible, and I hope it helps =]

Yeah I just tried to get to 40 again, and the chain broke at 29 on patch that looked absolutely perfect :(

I think I stick to those tips already, but could you elaborate on the second point you made (the one about step counting and breaking a chain foolishly at 38)

Also, how often do you get to 40 when you chain?

Hmmmm...it was probably just a random freeze, it has happened to me at least once on all of my games, so not much can be done I'm afraid.

And that's all the help I can offer :(

Also, curious,

You actually spend that much time chaining for shinies? I'd have given up long before that.

Asking, because doesn't that ruin the "special" attribute of having one?

Sorry I didn't make it very clear, basically by step counting I mean counting the numbers of steps from your position to the patches. Basically the rule is that if the furthest patch is 5-7 patches away.

3) It varies. The average is meant to be around 10-15, but my worst has been over 100 Max Repels since hitting 40, and my best has been the very moment my chain hit 40 - sometimes on a chain number before that.
It's very possible to get a Shiny bush immediately after a previous Shiny bush, or to see two Shiny patches appear at the same time.

In other words, it's all down to chance.

My game also randomly frooze once right at the point where it says, "Saving ... Don't turn off the power" I thought it was gonna wipe the whole game luckily it was fine as it had some kinda back up save, which is a very good feature :)

A few people have mentioned Max Repels, but I always super repels as you get more for your money, unless you are using like an AR then it doesn't matter.

Thanks for all the chain tips, I had a chain of Dittos yesterday but only got to 7 :S

No darkace, it has nothing to do with the version you play. >>

The only shiny I found while chaining is a Machop. I was EV training north of Oreburgh, and got sick of Geodudes, so I used the Pokeradar or whatever. Yeah, I don't spend much time searching for them.

I don't use a Pokemonradar to look for shiny Pokemon, just to find the rare ones, but one day I was just fooling around with the Pokeradar and on my 3rd try I found a shiny Gligar, I was really happy

Does it have to be the 4th "ring" or can it be further away?

I always choose the furthest one away, should I keep doing that or do to the furthest patch as long as it's on the 4th ring?

I had the first thing happen on my first ever chain, and the second thing happen on my latest chain. ;.;

Another thing, ALWAYS reset if you're not sure. If you just go to any patch because you don't want to reset, it often breaks your chains.
