I think the greatest part about katakana is that usually as long as you sound it out, you can figure out what word it suppose to be. Like purido is pride. Nice and easy.

That's the reason I learnt katakana first. I knew so few Japanese words that being able to read hiragana would be near useless to me and it was much easier to pick out basic basic BASIC meanings of sentences by seeing the English words in them. XD;

fixed =)

But sometimes you have to repeat it 5 times before you get what word it's supposed to be xD
That's part of the fun<3

XD Man, I know. I especially hate when you sit there trying to figure it out and eventually look it up only to find out they got lazy and only converted half the word into Japanese. (I know that's not the case but shh. ;p) Like, I think sandwich is one. sando just makes me think you're eating sand, not an actual sandwich. 8|

Thanks :embarrass I said it in my head as pu-ra-i-do, but I must've missed the a. haha, I'm so embarrassed.

For some reason it took me longer to remember all the katakana characters. Hiragana is easier for me to remember for some reason.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried Rosetta Stone software? I hear it's a helpful aid in learning a foreign language.

I hear the exact opposite, though I wouldn't know first-hand. :| I've never used any sort of self-teach software. There's apparently a "My Japanese Coach" game coming out on DS though. Again, dunno how good that series is either.

Since it's only the 3rd game, I think it'd probably be better to wait because it's mostly the same. Anyway, I've started to learn to recognise a few katakana and hiragana characters (mostly the smily faces XD) which is really something to me since English is the only language I understand XD

Cool, I hope that comes out in the UK. The lazy way to learn a tiny bit of a language XD

It actually has a lot of changes in it, like with gyms and stuff.

Most of my family members are skilled in calligraphy and they can read and write it.
So when I found out the same about kanji and chinese characters, I began to be able to read Japanese more (in Kanji). Lol, so I know quite a lot and I'm surprised that I've memorised more. So by learning to read in chinese characters while growing up, I can also read some kanji.

I started Pokemon Platinum but ended up quitting it. I am able to real hiragana and katakana because I'm currently learning Japanese at school but it doesn't necessarily mean I'll be able to understand what I'm reading.

No, I wish I could read it, but I can't. I am only able to read some Katakana. But like a few others, I have played and beat Platinum, only I can play it because I've played all the other pokemon games before and are familliar with how to play them.

Anybody knows how long might it take to fully learn Japanese?
If you're serious about learning it will take years to master, so I would start as soon as possible! But after one or two years you should be able to speak conversational Japanese if you keep at it!

Obviously, it'll be a LOT quicker if you went to live out in Japan! Lol!

I am quite good at languages as I can speak French and a bit of Spanish (as well as English! Lol!) And I am planning to start Japanese, but it'll be a lot harder than French or Spanish as it is very different from English. At the moment I am at Hiragana/Katakana learning stage...

According to my university school dean (English, born in London but been living here for 30 years now):
"Living in a country is the best way to learn the language. That is why I still cannot master Arabic.
Of course I'd love to master Arabic, but that'll mean resigning from this job and moving to the UAE.
You wouldn't like that now would you Kohei?"

Actually, that's quite true. You'll learn a lot faster through experience. Of course, obviously, if you can't afford moving to a foreign country to live and learn, just go to a class, get a tutor or if you're desperate, get those self taught books.

Learning the basics are easy really, you can pretty much get down general speech and hearing in a few months if it's your sole focus. Writing and reading will take longer but it's mostly up to how quickly you learn and natural ability.

I remember a time before we could read. During this time, we played Pokemon and used the moves that hurt the other guy's Pokemon. It isn't that hard to play without reading. Also, learning hiragana and katakana isn't that hard. With Katakana, you should be able to read most of the important thing. Storyline won't come as clear, but battling and probably contests should be simple enough.

A little, but it wouldn't help me at all in Platinum. But now I am already going for the league and I don't have a SINGLE problem somehow.

Years? How many years? I'm serious about learning it. Will two years be enough?
If you stick to it by learning 10/15 mins a day of Japanese. I would say in two years time you would probably be fluent conversationally. To be 100% fluent you would need to live out there!

I really wish I could learn Japanese...if only I had the time to!
In college though, I plan to learn Chinese because it's the most advantageous language to know. If I went into a Japanese class and they asked me why I was there...I could only say so I can translate games! XD

Yeah, immersion is the best way to study; maybe I could go there for the summer in college or something...

I would love to learn Japanese. But I think knowing how to read and write it is super hard. I would love to learn to speak it first. The reading and writing will come later. XD There are some words I learned from translating sites and of course watching subs.

I think writing and reading hiragana and katakana isn't difficult, but learning vocabulary is hard in my opinion. And memorizing kanji is difficult too... I wish they could just write in a single alphabet... or that I could understand more than just an average 5 year old japanese child.
