With all that's been going on recently, I find myself thinking this recent CNN article is highly appropriate.

What are your thoughts on the way people abuse the internet? Is it really a bad thing? Do the negatives outweigh the positives? It's hard to figure out.

I think people feel a lot more confident when sitting behind a computer. Because there's no face to face communication, people will say things that they normally wouldn't, and their words are a much more bold and concise. Unlike a face to face conversation, you have time to think about your response and make it sound however you want, and a lot of times it comes off as angry and hurtful.

"In the [pre-Internet era], you had to take ownership [of your remarks]. Now there's a perception of anonymity," said Lesley Withers, a professor of communication at Central Michigan University. "People think what they say won't have repercussions, and they don't think they have to soften their comments."

This woman said it exactly right, and all over the internet people take advantage of this simple aspect of the internet.

As for the good and bad? Well obviously the internet is a great thing and makes our lives immeasurably easier. As for the internets misuse...I don't think we can both enjoy the benefits and the drawbacks at the same time. =/

I have to admit...overall, the internet has made me a worse person. My grades have slackened, I've become somewhat desensitized, and overall, I've become more introverted.
The internet is just too dependable D:
Everything's on the internet, people, news, fun, music...no one knows about this whole 'outside' factor anymore. Not only that, but things such as pornography made new standards out of women that are totally non-realistic and potentially harmful IRL. Things such as pedophilia have become more rampant thanks to internet chatrooms among other things out there. When it goes beyond the social realm, industries begin to suffer due to the ease nowadays to torrent and bootleg whatever the hell you want, from mp3s to DVDs to the newest Windows, anything that's digital can be found for free on the internet. Those are pretty much my view on the cons of the internet...

On the plus side, there is more global interaction. I've met some people from foreign places that I would have never met if it wasn't for the internet (But then again with the cons, I could also say that I should socialize more with people IRL instead...). The internet brings together a realm of ideas (one again, good and bad) and creates a social network that could have been impossible IRL. News from around the world are at your fingertips as well as various sources that take you beyond the library. When it comes to information, the internet truly is a revolution. E-mail as well is the new reliable and efficient way to communicate rather than snail-mail.

So for me, when it comes down to it....the internet is only good for global networking, not so much for personal interests. That's where it becomes harmful.

Nice topic :D

People who are cocky over the internet most likely get bullied in real life, and decide to take it out on others on the computer, because nobody can really stop them (besides banning them).

However, it could also be a real life bully, annoying people for pure fun, also, and I detest online bullying, and also bullying in general.
