“I confer upon you, the official Pokemon League Soul Badge!”
All Nightmare Long
Prologue:
Creeping Death
Creeping Death
Setting: Fuchsia City, Kanto
“I confer upon you, the official Pokemon League Soul Badge!”
The victorious trainer happily plucked the shiny badge from Koga’s outstretched hand. He examined the emblem, turned to his travelling companions, and exclaimed, “Awesome! Check it out you guys, a Soul Badge!”
He turned to thank Koga for a great battle, but the ninja had vanished. The trainer adjusted his gaze from the old wooden floor of the Fuchsia Gym.
“That’s your seventh badge!” one of them, a younger, spikey-haired male said, “you’re almost ready to take the Pokemon League challenge!”
“Heh-heh, just about!” remarked the badge’s new owner, as his hand disappeared into his rucksack. It emerged grasping an obsidian colored case.
A sly grin could be seen appearing on the trainers face as he ogled his glossy badge case. He pushed it open with his thumbs and positioned his newly acquired Soul Badge within the velvet interior.
The male stroked his goatee as he admired his glimmering emblems. Seven badges was a big deal. It took most trainers a few years just to earn one. Feeling as though he accomplished enough for one day, he turned back to his companions.
“Why don’t we go celebrate?” the vigorous young male inquired, “drinks on me!”
The eldest male nodded towards his attractive female companion, and she responded with a nod of her own.
The friends made their way out, with nary a voltorb popping out of the woodwork of the trap-laden Fuchsia Gym.
Once out of the gym, the trio headed for a main road. The female of the group pulled a Kanto region guidebook from the depths of her backpack. Her long, strawberry blonde hair wafted in a gentle breeze as she leafed through the Fuchsia City index.
“It looks like there’s a tavern just down the road, why don’t we head there?”
“Sounds like a plan,” answered the two males, nodding their heads.
They trudged on down the road, scanning the area for the establishment. This district of the city wasn't exactly bustling with life. The only real attraction was Koga's pokemon gym. In the distance, tall buildings dotted the city's skyline.
It was a warm day in Fuchsia City. Typical though, because of it's beachfront location. The only wind that was felt carried the scent of sea breeze.
The group finally reached their destination, only to discover that the tavern was closed. A large, red "X" was spraypainted across the once lavish oak doors.
“What the hell!” shouted the youngest male, “I could’ve really gone for a beer too, damn it all.” He fell to the ground in a very exaggerated manner and yelled, "Nooo! Why me!?"
“Shut up, will you, and look at this,” chimed in the female, “there’s a flyer on the ground here.” She examined the blue sheet of paper, and then deposited it in a trash bin next to her. “It looks like they’ve relocated closer to the shore,” she noted, "we can have some drinks, and then chill on the beach!"
"Well, what are we waiting for then?” solicited the energetic young male, “I can’t wait for that drink!”
The eldest male nodded in agreement, and the friends headed for the route that would take them towards their new destination.
A few miles, a few drinks, and a few hours later, the three trainers were relaxing on Fuchsia City’s beach. The waves were calm and the sun was setting to the west. The beach was very well maintained, and the trio had it all to themselves. A beachball wavered at the water's edge, threatening to float out to sea if the tide were to rise. Their umbrella quivered playfully in a slight breeze.
However, the friends had no idea of what was lurking beneath the water.
The surface bubbled, and a pokemon began to come into sight.
Its sleek, brown body emerged from below the waves. This was no run of the mill pokemon. Its arms were long, sharp scythes; which glimmered in the sunlight.
Two blood red eyes wearily opened, and the creature's shield-shaped head began observing its surroundings. Behind it was more ocean, and ahead of it, a beach.
The brown pokemon jadedly made its way to shore. It seemed to move in a dizzying manner. The pokemon attempted to scale some sharp rocks dotting the shoreline, when something caught its eye.
A few yards away, three young adults rested on beach towels. It had not noticed them at first, and naturally, the pokemon was interested.
It hobbled along the rocky coast, the waves teasing its clawed toes. The creature seemed a bit more at ease as it reached the sandy beach.
Standing upright, it was easily as tall as the senior male of the group. As the pokemon drew nearer to the sleeping humans, it triggered the eldest males Pokedex.
Kabutops: A prehistoric pokemon. It had an extremely vicious temperament and was very territorial.
Upon hearing his Pokedex chatter, the eldest male awoke. He rubbed his eyes, snatched the device up, and examined the screen.
“Kabutops?” he thought out loud, “This pokemon has been extinct for millions of years. Maybe I was dreaming about it?” His mind was still a bit cloudy. Talking aloud caused his companions to awake.
“What are you mumbling over there?” queried the female.
"Did I hear your Pokedex say kabutops?" asked wearily by the youngest male.
“Yeah,” he answered, feeling more alert, “I just woke up and my Pokedex was yakking about it. I don't know what would've triggered it."
“Well there’s nothing to worry about,” she said, “kabutops has been extinct for eons." Thinking out loud, she added, "Just imagine if they were still around though!”
As she said this, the kabutops burst forth from the sand a few yards behind the trio.
“What the hell!?” the youngest male shouted, "what the hell is over there? Oh no, no, please don't tell me. . ."
As the cloud of sand faded, the humans could discern the menacing shape that appeared. The kaputops assumed an aggressive stance as it stared defiantly at the humans.
"Oh my god! Look at that thing!" shrieked the female.
The kabutops glared at the trio. It was a very intimidating creature, but it didn't attack.
The eldest male reached to his belt, his fingers wrapping around a red and white ball.
“Go, seviper!” he shouted.
He threw the pokeball, and it cracked open in a dazzling display of light. The large, venomous snake materialized in front of the trainers.
“Go now, use poison tail! I wanna capture that kabutops!" commanded its master.
The serpent turned about face, and quickly slinked through the sand toward the ancient scythe pokemon; its tail taking on a bright purple hue.
Kabutops didn't seem to fear the snake at all, and stood its ground.
Seviper lunged through the air like a missile. It had been trained well, and was exceptionally fast for its size.
At first it appeared the poison tail attack was a success, as the scythe pokemon took a step back.
That was, until seviper lay at kabutops’ feet, sliced precisely in two. Blood began to drain from the dead serpent's body.
“What the f***!?” roared the eldest male. “No! Seviper! No! Pokemon aren’t supposed to attack like that! What the f*** just happened?”
Kabutops’ eyes seemed to glow hungrily as it eyed seviper’s carcass. The ancient pokemon then dropped to its knees and began sucking up seviper’s blood.
“What the f*** do you think you’re doing!?” screamed the serpent’s trainer.
Suddenly, he heard a scream emanate from behind him. The eldest male turned his head to face his friends. The female was standing a few feet behind him, her hands covering her mouth. Just a few yards beyond her, was the energetic young male. Or at least, what was left of him.
Many omanyte had his body surrounded, and a myriad more were emerging from the ocean. His friend's body seemed to be disintegrating right before his eyes. The omanyte appeared to be sucking blood from the corpse.
The trainer couldn’t bring himself to scream. He stood there stunned, just as his female companion was. His friend was dead, and he didn't know what to make of the situation. The omanyte were inching closer, and upon remembering his beloved seviper, the male turned towards where it lay.
The poison snake's carcass was there, but the kabutops had vanished.
”Oh s***,” he said, turning back towards the female. He grabbed her arm and pulled her closer to himself. “We have to get the hell out of here! I don’t know what the f***’s going on, we just have to get back to the city.”
The female just shook her head.
Before they even took a step, the male felt something smack him in the back. He immediately coughed up blood, and fell to the sand.
The female’s already horrified expression worsened.
Behind the collapsed male was an omastar, another ancient pokemon. Just beyond the omastar, was the mass of omanyte. The omastar did not look like it wanted to make friends.
Her hand shaking histerically, the female reached for her only pokeball. She tossed it with what might she had, and the pokemon inside burst forth.
A beautiful ninetales appeared before her.
“D-do whatever you c-can to keep t-that t-thing away!” she cried.
She risked a glance at her male companion. A hole was spreading open in his back. It appeared some sort of acid was eating away at his body. She couldn’t help but notice his badge case lying next to him. She scooped it up, and began to back away, her whole body trembling at the sight of her friend.
Ninetails was running circles around the omastar, but the ancient mollusk didn’t seem to be fazed by its agility.
Regaining some composure, she shouted, “Ninetails, use fire spin!”
Ninetails howled and launched a stunning fire spin attack at the omastar.
Fire engulfed the apparently not-so-extinct-anymore pokemon. All of a sudden, the fire took on a purplish glow, and vanished.
The omastar reared back, and launched an attack at ninetails that the female had never seen before. It appeared to be a water gun, but instead of water, it was a purplish acid.
“Ninetails don’t let that s*** hit you!” the female shrieked.
The fox pokemon used its agility, and barely avoided the deadly acid. It struck a large boulder behind the fox pokemon, which immediately began to disintegrate.
As if reading its trainer's mind, ninetails opened its mouth and launched a vicious flamethrower attack at the omastar. Before the flames could swallow it up, the ancient pokemon retreated into the sand.
"Come on ninetales, we need to get out of here, now!”
She turned to run, but found herself face to face with none other than the kabutops. White flashed before her eyes and immense pain coursed throughout her body. Tears streamed from her eyes as she looked down, only to see kabutops’ razor sharp scythe lodged in her right shoulder.
She couldn’t even rally a scream, the pain was so intense. Blood was splattered all over her shirt. She peered up at kabutops, but the creature seemed distracted.
The pokemon twisted its scythe and dislodged it from the female’s shoulder just as ninetales performed an astounding heat wave attack in its direction. Ninetails' master was in the danger zone of the powerful attack, but it protected her with its safeguard. Ninetails would do anything to protect its trainer.
Kabutops and its surroundings were immediately engulfed in flames from ninetails' attack. The ancient slicer pokemon tried its best to protect itself, but ninetales showed it no mercy. The fox lowered its head, the crown of which began to glow, and charged forward with a devastating zen headbutt. Cracks were forming around the ancient pokemon's abdomen, and the creature roared in pain. Kabutops flew into the craggy rocks behind it, and lay there motionless.
Once it had no doubts the kabutops wasn't getting up, ninetails rushed over to its trainer. The female was on her knees, her left hand covering her shoulder wound. She had lost quite a bit of blood. Ninetails’ eyes began to glow a vivid red, and it lowered its head to its master’s injury. Its recovery powers were strong, and it would do whatever it could to relieve its trainer of pain. The female couldn't help but feel pleased with her pokemon.
Ninetails is an incredibly intelligent pokemon. It sensed the acid attack before the omastar could launch it. It also showed its astonishing strength, by blocking the acid with a safeguard attack. The purple acid was deflected, and began melting nearby rocks and trees.
Before the omastar could attack again, Ninetails and its master were off and running. Ninetails had its stamina, but the female was running on pure adrenaline. The female didn't even look back to see if she was being followed. Ninetails tagged along behind its master; it could use its tails to sense anything coming from the rear.
A little farther up the beach, the tavern was coming into sight. No ancient pokemon were in sight. Strangely enough, neither were any humans. Ninetails sniffed the air, but couldn’t smell anything. It couldn’t sense any presences either.
The female fell to her knees at the base of the tavern's high steps. Her wound felt to be getting worse. She grimaced, clutched the wound, and mentally prepared herself.
Rallying as much strength as she could, she heaved herself up the steps of the tavern, and through its conveniently unlocked metal doors. The lights were off, save for some mood lighting over the bar, but there were no people inside.
She locked the doors, and ninetails performed a slight fire spin to weld them shut.
The female gazed around the tavern. There were no signs of a struggle. She had only been here what, a few hours ago?
Ninetails sidled over and sat at her feet. She reached out to pet the fox, but a sudden dizzy spell came over her. In addition, her wound burned worse than when kabutops' scythe was wedged in it. Ninetails gazed at her uncomfortably. She teetered for a moment, and then fell. She was out before she hit the floor.
