Chapter 1: VS. Poochyena!

RUMBLE, RUMBLE

The moving truck rolled along the rocky road at an alarming rate, crushing the earth beneath it into pieces and sending clouds of dust into the air. The noises it made scared the surrounding Pokémon out of their hiding places and caused them to scatter as soon as they saw the large vehicle rumbling towards them. Littleroot hadn’t seen, or heard, a vehicle of this calibre in its humble town in quite some time and the residents knew exactly what it meant... new neighbours.

The large truck nearly spun on its wheels as it made a sharp turn towards its destination, a small empty house with a “For Sale” sign on the front lawn. It came to a grinding halt, ruining the beautiful grass beneath it and stopping within inches of a flower bed. The driver turned to his passenger and apologized for his driving, the woman just smiled and pretended like she hadn’t noticed a thing. Although, the wobbling of her legs told a different story as she jumped down onto the ground, almost wanting to reached down and grab it, never to let go again.

The woman managed to hold herself still after the horrible shakiness that she’d been feeling for many hours while in the moving truck, before remembering about her son and how he would have coped with the ride. There wasn’t enough room in the front for three people, so her son had to ride in the back of the moving truck... which the woman was just now realising as a very bad idea. She walked around to the back of the truck and grabbed the handle at the base of the door, pulling it up and open with one swift upward motion.

It was a complete mess, boxes had been thrown all over the place and the couch had been flipped over completely. The truck driver walked up beside the woman and looked into the back of the truck as he began to survey the damage. “Oh, I guess I was driving a little... ecstatically,” observed the driver, pulling down on the brim of his trucker hat and spitting down between his feet.

“A little!?” screamed the woman, throwing her arms in the air as she turned to the driver with wild burning anger in her eyes, “It looks like you were driver as if a pack of angry Arcanine were chasing you, while a furious Gyarados was shooting Hyper Beam’s at the truck and you tried to get rid of them by driving through a field of Electrode, who started exploding when they saw you!”

The driver stared at the woman, his eyes blinking and his mouth agape, “Well,” he began, trying to regain himself after that description, “That’s quite the analogy, isn’t it?”

The woman let out a Tyranitar-like roar and stomped off in a huff, “Just get everything inside!” she screamed as she headed for the house. When she reached the door, she turned back around and glared at the driver, “And find my son!” she added, slamming the door behind her.

“Well, first things first,” said the driver, placing his hands of his hips as he turned his attention back to the hurricane-like mess in the back of the truck, “Hey kid! You alright?”

A few seconds later, the driver saw movement as a few boxes started to roll off of the large pile in the corner of the truck. First a hand was seen, then a foot, followed by the rest of the boy who had been crushed under the moving boxes, “I’m alright,” he said, his head still spinning from the ride.

The boy had crimson red eyes and a lightly tanned complexion, his messy back hair was kept under control by a red and white beanie. He wore a black and red work out shirt and baggy black pants, while his feet were covered by black and grey boots over white socks. He also sported a pair of black fingerless gloves, which completed his look.

“Perfect!” replied the driver, suddenly feeling a wave of relief roll over him, “You’re mother would have killed me if you had gotten hurt. Now, go inside and tell her that you’re alright.”

The boy nodded and stood up slowly as he readjusted his beanie, he wobbled quite a bit as he stumbled along... trying to make his way out of the truck. He had to use the side of the truck to keep himself balanced, but he managed to make it onto the soft grass in the end.
-----
RING, RING

The doorbell chimed throughout the house, catching the attention of the woman who was checking out her new home. The door burst open and the woman’s son collapsed onto the hardwood floor, “Mum,” he said, slowly trying to lift himself off the ground, “I’m never riding in a truck again...”

“Ruby!” the boy’s mother yelled as she ran over to her son, “Don’t worry, I’ll call the company and tell them about that maniacal driver. Just as soon as he brings the phone inside...” The woman grabbed one of her sons arms and pulled him back to his feet, “Oh!” she quickly said, suddenly remembering something important, “Aren’t you supposed to go and see Professor Birch? He lives next door.”

The boy, Ruby, nodded and slowly pulled his arm away from his mother, attempting to stand by himself. “Yeah, I do,” he said, taking a few steps forward and holding his hand to his head, “Let me just sit down for a little bit.” Ruby rolled his eyes slightly and dropped onto the ground, with his back up against the wall, “I’m sure he’ll still be there when I go.”
-----
Ruby shut the door behind him, headed down the front steps, along the cobbled garden path and out the front gate as he began to make his way to the house next door to his, which was home to Professor Birch and his family. The thought in his head were racing, he couldn’t believe that he was about to receive his very first Pokémon and start his journey to become Hoenn’s top coordinator.

That’s right, Ruby isn’t the type of trainer that wants to battle gym leaders and collect badges so that he can compete in the Pokémon League. He’d rather train his Pokémon in technique and beauty to become the greatest coordinator he can be, although... his father wasn’t hoping for this, seeing as he himself is a Gym Leader and is in fact the reason why Ruby had moved to Littleroot Town. His father was hoping that he’d someday get to battle his son in an official gym match, but instead his son wants to compete in contests. What makes it worse is; Ruby has yet to tell his father what it is he wants to do and, when he does, he’s sure that he won’t take it very well.

BANG

Ruby suddenly fell to the ground with a thud, which had sent his head spinning. He’d been thinking so much that he didn’t even realise that he had reached Professor Birch’s door and had ended up walking straight into it.

All of a sudden, the door swung open and a brown haired woman stood before Ruby. She glanced side to side before noticing Ruby lying on his back on her doorstep, “Oh!” said the woman, “You must be Ruby!”

Ruby rubbed his head and looked up at the woman, “Yeah, that’s me.” Before he could say anything else, the woman grabbed Ruby by the hand and pulled him to his feet, ushering him over to the stairs that led to the second storey.

“My daughter’s upstairs,” said the woman, making pointing actions with her finger, “First door on your right. She’s been dying to meet you.”

Ruby, not wanting to be stuck in a long argument with the woman, decided not to say that he wasn’t there to see her daughter. Instead, he nodded and started walking up the stairs, not exactly knowing what to expect upon reaching the top.

Ruby climbed the last step and stopped, before turning to the right and looking towards the woman’s daughter’s room. There he saw an open door, through which he could see a girl running about as she packed a yellow backpack with various clothing and items one would take if they were going on a trip somewhere.

The girl had large sea blue eyes, long brown hair that was styled into two side ponytails and a lightly pale complexion. She wore a pale blue sleeveless dress-shirt, a pair of black short shorts, some light blue shoes with dark straps under black socks and two blue and silver gloves. A blue bandana with white markings was tied around her head and completed her look.

Slowly, Ruby walked towards the room and stopped at the doorway, he observed the girl as she made her way around the room. He waited for the girl to notice him, but, when she didn’t, Ruby cleared his throat in an attempt to get her attention... although, even this didn’t work and so Ruby decided to say something, “Hi there.”

The sound of Ruby’s voice seemed to scare the girl, as she immediately jumped up in surprise... slipping as she did and falling flat on her face. Ruby didn’t move or try to help, instead... he just stood there. “What the hell?” screamed the girl, turning around quickly and opening her mouth to yell an insult at Ruby. That is, until she saw his face, “Oh...”

“My name is Ruby,” stated Ruby, still standing in the doorway and not moving an inch.

The girl quickly jumped to her feet and dusted herself off, “I’m Sapphire,” she said politely, making her way over to Ruby and extending her hand to him. Ruby shook the girl’s hand and leaned to the side as he looked at the girls backpack, “You going somewhere?” he asked.

“Oh!” called Sapphire, spinning around and looking at the backpack on her bed, “That’s right!” She ran over and grabbed the bag, before turning back to Ruby and saying, “I'm sorry, but I have to get going. Maybe I’ll see you again.”

“Yeah, that would be-” Ruby began to say, but was quickly pushed out of the way by Sapphire as she ran past him and thundered down the stairs in a hurry. “Nice...” concluded Ruby, smiling slightly as he glanced back into Sapphire’s room. With a sigh, he grabbed the door knob and pulled the door shut gently.
-----
Ruby slowly walked along the grass as he headed back home after an unsuccessful “meeting” with Professor Birch. Sapphire’s mother had told him that he’d just missed him and now Ruby’s own words were coming back to haunt him, “I’m sure he’ll still be there when I go.”

Ruby sighed, thinking that he’d never get his very own Pokémon now... meaning he’d have to wait a whole year more before he got to start his Pokémon journey, “Maybe if the truck driver had driven a little bit faster, I could have gotten my Pokémon.” Ruby’s head dropped and he stared down at his dirty boots, “I really need some new shoes,” he told himself, lifting his feet one at a time and looking at the wear and tear.

“Hey!”

The sound of an unfamiliar voice caused Ruby to take his attention away from his shoes and focus it on a small boy that was running towards him. “I need help!” the boy yelled as he reached Ruby, stopping and bending over as he tried to catch his breath. “It’s the Professor,” said the boy, still huffing after his long run, “He’s being attacked by a wild Pokémon and I’m too small to help.”

Ruby stood there, gobsmacked for a few seconds, before snapping back to reality, “Ok! Take me to the Professor.” The boy nodded and turned around, bolting off in the direction he had come from... quickly, Ruby followed after him and hoped that they’d make it in time to save Professor Birch.
----
What Ruby saw as he and the boy reached the scene was exactly what the boy had said; Professor Birch was being cornered against a tree by a small black dog-like Pokémon. All Ruby could do was stand there and stare at the crazy scene in disbelief, until Professor Birch noticed the pair and spoke up.

“Max! You found help!” he called glancing down at the wild Pokémon to make sure it wasn’t getting any closer, “You, boy! In my bag there’s a Pokéball, grab it and use the Pokémon inside to fight off this Poochyena!”

The Professor was dressed in a solid blue T-shirt, a pair of green shorts and some black sandals... his clothing would suggest that he liked to work in the field, as opposed to the confinement of the lab. A white lab coat, which is a must for any professor, completed his look.

Ruby blinked a few times, before realising that Professor Birch and the little boy, Max, were staring at him... waiting for him to make a move. “Right!” he quickly said, clenching his fists and running over to the Professor’s bag, which had been knocked over in all the chaos. He reached his hand in and grabbed the first ball-like object he felt, whipping it out quickly and hurling it towards the Poochyena without a second thought.

There was a flash of bright light, which faded to reveal a small blue Pokémon with four paws, a fin on its head and strange orange “spikes” coming out of its cheeks. “Mudkip!” the Pokémon called happily, looking over at Ruby with joyous eyes. “Go... blue thing! Use Tackle!” called Ruby, not exactly knowing what to call the creature.

The small blue Pokémon jumped in the air and did a full three sixty, so that it was now facing the wild Poochyena. It glared at the dog Pokémon for a few seconds, before breaking into a swift run and leaping into the air, smashing headfirst into the side of the Poochyena.

The wild Pokémon was caught off guard and ended up tumbling over onto its back, which it wasn’t very happy about, for when it got back up... it glared angrily at Ruby’s blue Pokémon and barked loudly. It clawed at the ground for a bit and then bolted forwards, its sharp teeth bared.

“Dodge it!” called Ruby, not taking another second to think. The small Pokémon dived out of the way just in time and the wild Poochyena slid to a halt, just before Ruby. The boy looked down at the angry Pokémon and attempted to back away, but the Poochyena snarled angrily and prepared for an attack.

“Mudkip!” called Professor Birch, having been freed and now fully able to take care of the situation, “Tackle, now!” The blue Pokémon, Mudkip, ran at the Poochyena and leapt into the air, crashing into it just like it had done earlier. This time though, the wild Pokémon decided to cut its losses and make a run for it... quickly disappearing into the bushes.

Ruby sighed in relief, he had only narrowly escaped becoming Pokémon food and the whole ordeal had left him out of breath. “Nice work,” said Professor Birch, walking up beside Ruby and patting him on the back. Held in his other arm was Mudkip, who seemed just as proud as the Professor, “Why don’t you come back to my lab so that I can thank you properly.”

Ruby blinked a few times and then glanced between Mudkip and the Professor, who were both smiling happily. “Sure,” replied Ruby, giving a proud and stern nod.

Hmm... A couple of grammatical errors (but hey, I'm an editor's daughter >.>), but overall pretty nice :3

Maybe I'm just saying this because I love Ruby? But yeah. Though his personality... Ah... And introducing Sapphire a bit too early... Maybe I'm just thinking of the manga, but I suppose you're following the game storyline more, right? ^^'

Anyhow, keep it up~

Oh, and I like the character descriptions, too :3

Yeah, I forgot to read over the chapter... so there's bound to be some grammar mistakes.

Honestly, I've never actually "read" the manga. I've skimmed over it a couple of times and gotten a few ideas from it, but all together I don't really know how the storyline goes. That's why I'm basing it mostly on the games...

Chapter 2: VS. Torchic!

Ruby followed Professor Birch through the doors of the lab and his heart immediately skipped a beat, the sparkling laboratory was filled with an array of books and computerised technology. “Wow...” is all he managed to say as his eyes surveyed the area, trying to take in every last detail. Ruby blinked a few times and then continued to briskly walk through the lab, wanting to reach Professor Birch on the other side of the building.

“I take from your “wow” that you are somewhat... impressed, by my lab,” said Professor Birch, raising an eyebrow and smiling warmly. Ruby nodded, his eyes still scanning the lab for things that he may have missed the first time. The Professor let Ruby continue his observation as he placed a small red device and five empty Pokéball’s on the desk in front of him. Birch then cleared his throat in order to gain Ruby’s attention again, which seemed to happen instantaneously.

“This is a Pokédex,” said the Professor, lifting the red device to eye level, “It is used to compile data on different types of Pokémon and is a must have item for any trainer.” Ruby nodded to show that he understood, keeping quiet as to not miss anything important, “And these...” he continued, looking down at the five Pokéball’s on the desk, “Are Pokéball’s. But, you already know that. After all, you did use Mudkip to save me earlier.”

Ruby smiled, “It was nothing...” he said, trying to sound like it was something he did every day. “So, do I get to choose my Pokémon now?” asked the anxious boy, quickly cutting to the chase and hoping that the Professor would reply with the only answer he wanted to hear.

“Well...” began Professor Birch, smiling slightly nervously and scratching the back of his head, “Not exactly.” Ruby’s face drooped, the emotion of happiness being replaced by a look of disappointment, “You see,” continued the Professor, “I’ve already given away the two other Pokémon, so I’ve only got Mudkip left.”

“I don’t mind!” answered Ruby quickly, slamming his hands down on the desk and leaning right into Professor Birch’s face, “I’ll take any Pokémon! I don’t care what it is.” Birch blinked as Ruby slowly leaned away from him and without another word, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the Pokéball that contained Mudkip... quickly handing it to Ruby.

Ruby’s eyes lit up and he raised the Pokéball into the air, acting as if he had just won a competition and he was now holding up the shining trophy. “There is one more thing...” said the Professor, snapping Ruby out of his fantasies and bringing him back down the earth, “My daughter was in such a rush to start her Pokémon journey this morning, that she forgot to take her Pokédex and Pokéball’s. So, I was wondering, could you please head up to Route 103 and give them to her?”

Ruby tilted his head to the side slowly and narrowed his eyes as he began to think about nothing at all, before he remembered Professor Birch’s question, “Oh... yes, of course!” The Professor then pulled out another Pokédex and five more empty Pokéball’s, placing them on the desk.

Ruby grabbed everything that was on the desk and crammed it all into his two pockets, which caused Professor Birch’s eyes to widen and make him wonder how big Ruby’s pockets were. He shook away the thought and smiled at the boy, “Thank you so much,” he said thankfully, “My daughter’s name is Sapphire.”
-----
Ruby burst through the door of his new house and found that everything had been set up, with all the ornaments and utensils unpacked. “Mum!” he called, strolling though the living room and checking out every square inch of the house as he waited for a reply.

When no reply was heard, Ruby wandered into the kitchen and looked around... hoping to spot his mother somewhere, but she was nowhere to be seen. Ruby then spotted a letter upon a small cardboard box, sitting on the counter... which he picked up a proceeded to read quietly.

Ruby

I’ve gone next door to introduce myself to Mrs. Birch. I took the liberty of packing your bag for you and I also bought you a present, it’s in the box. I’ll be back soon, but if you leave before I return, be sure to give me a call as soon as you can.

Love, Mum.

Ruby lifted his head and lowered the letter, pondering to himself. He quickly snapped back to reality and glanced to his left, where he saw his backpack... all ready for his big trip. Ruby then remembered the present and quickly went about open the cardboard box on the counter. Inside, he found something that he desperately needed... a pair of running shoes, red and black in colour.

“Oh, mum...” he whispered to himself, wondering how she had known even though he knew that it was just typical mother knowledge. In a flash Ruby had his new shoes on his feet and his old boots were lying upon the linoleum floor, he grabbed his backpack and swung it onto his back. “Onwards! To Route 103!” he announced, holding his fist in the air as he marched off proudly.
-----
It felt strange to Ruby, leaving his new home after only arriving about forty-five minutes earlier, but he knew it was for the best and, after all, he wasn’t going to have much of a Pokémon journey if he stayed in Littleroot Town. He stepped out onto Route 101; glancing back at his home for what he knew would be the last time until he had completed his greatest goal.

Ruby sighed and turned away, looking out onto Route 101 with a smile on his face, “This is it...” he whispered, setting off towards Oldale Town. Just a few steps along the route and Ruby stopped, “This isn’t just my journey,” he said, reaching down and unclipping Mudkip’s Pokéball from his belt, “Come on out buddy!”

Ruby tossed the Pokéball into the air and, in a flash of blinding light, his small blue Pokémon appeared at his feet. “Mudkip!” it said happily, doing a little hop on the spot to show how eager it was to get going. “Wow there!” replied Ruby, trying to calm down the joyful Pokémon, “First things first. You need a name!”

Mudkip jumped up and down happily, showing that he too wanted Ruby to provide him with a fitting name. “How about...” thought Ruby, placing a finger against his chin and staring up at the tops of the surrounding trees, “Kipper!” Mudkip was slightly taken back by the predictable name that Ruby had chosen and quickly shook his head in disgust.

“Oh...” replied Ruby, trying to think of a new name, “What about... Sam?” This time, Mudkip smiled and nodded happily... which made Ruby roll his eyes slightly and wipe his forehead, “Good.” Ruby looked down at Sam, who was smiling back up at him with glowing eyes, “You want to ride on my shoulder?” he asked, Sam’s reply was obvious as he leapt onto Ruby’s shoulder with one swift bound.

“Mudkip!” called Sam, lifting his head proudly as he surveyed the world from his new perspective... upon Ruby’s shoulder. Ruby laughed at his happy Pokémon and continued on his way to Oldale Town, “So, you excited?” he asked, trying to make conversation. “Mudkip!” replied Sam, with such spirit that Ruby’s question was answered without him even knowing how to speak Pokémon.

“Me too, Sam...” returned Ruby, craning his neck upwards as he looked to the late morning sky, “Me too...” They continued on for about five more minutes with Ruby looking up at the sky, before Sam broke the silence, “Mudkip!” Ruby’s gaze quickly returned to where it should have been five minutes ago and saw that they had reached Oldale Town.

“Leg one complete, aye,” said Ruby, glancing up at Sam and smiling, “Now, onwards to Route 103.” Ruby could see the connecting route on the other side of the town, seeing as it wasn’t very big, and was about to charge straight through, when he was stopped suddenly. A woman, who had brunette hair and was dressed like she should be working in a store, stopped Ruby by pushing her hand to his chest.

“Hey there!” she said spritely, “I bet you’re a trainer!” Ruby nodded and the woman continued, “I work at the Oldale Poké Mart and I would like to give you a free sample!” The store worker reached into the pocket in on her white apron and pulled out a potion, “Here you go!” she said, handing it to him with such force that Ruby was scared about what would happen if he rejected her offer.

“Thanks!” replied Ruby, quickly grabbing the potion and spinning around the woman in order to get away from her, “I’ll see you later.” He quickly picked up his pace and ran the rest of the way though town in an effort to avoid any other distractions.

Ruby reached Route 103 in a flash and started running even faster, but he made the mistake of turning his head to see if anyone was following him and ended up tripping on a log. He stumbled for a split second and then fell to the ground, sending Sam flying off his shoulder. “Mudkip!” he called, trying to manoeuvre his body so that he’d land on his feet... which he did.
-----
“Oh dear...” complained Sapphire, standing by herself and thinking of what she could do to get out of this mess. “Daddy isn’t going to trust me to go out on my own if I go back and tell him that I forgot my Pokédex and Pokéball’s,” she explained to herself, not knowing exactly what to do.

Sapphire’s face dropped and she closed her eyes as she began to think that she was going to stuck with this problem forever, “What am I going do?” She pulled out her Pokéball and cupped it in her hands, “At least I’ve got you,” she told the Pokémon inside the ball.

“Sapphire!” called Ruby, surprising the girl and causing her to jump into the air in shock. Sapphire lost grip of her Pokéball and sent it skyward, bound for the dirt unless someone did something to stop it. “Mudkip!” called Sam, leaping into the air and catching the flying Pokéball in his mouth, before landing skilfully in front of Sapphire.

Sapphire was taken aback by the sudden appearance of Sam at her feet, her Pokéball held firmly between his jaws. “Whoa!” she yelled, stumbling a few steps back, “Uhm... thanks.” The, still shaken up, girl reached down and took the Pokéball out of Sam’s mouth, patting him on the head thankfully, “That was a close one.”

“So... Sapphire,” repeated Ruby, trying to get the girls attention... but all he did was end up surprising her again. Sapphire fumbled the Pokéball and nearly dropped it, but she had luckily learnt from the previous experience and managed to hold on. She wasn’t happy at Ruby though; she spun on her heels and faced him with an angry expression.

“What the hell is it with you and scaring me?” she screamed, throwing her hands in the air to show her anger... making sure to hold onto her Pokéball tightly. “You nearly made me drop my poor little Connor... twice!” she continued to yell, lowering her hands to cradle the Pokéball and gently rock it side to side.

“Connor?” questioned Ruby in return, trying to steer away from the argument at hand, “Whose Connor?” Sapphire looked up at Ruby and pulled a sarcastic, “Whose Connor?” expression... before raising the Pokéball to eye level and pushing the small button in the middle. There was a flash of white light and a small orange Pokémon formed at the girl’s feet, “Torchic?” it said, tilting its head to the side.

“This is Connor,” said Sapphire, tilting her head to the side just like the Pokémon had, “He’s a Torchic and I got him from my dad as my first Pokémon.” The girl’s spirit suddenly dropped, “But, not even he can protect me from my father’s wrath when he finds out that I left my Pokéball's and Pokédex back at the lab.”

Ruby’s face lit up slightly as he dove his hands deep into his two pockets; “Actually...” he began, pulling out the extra Pokéball’s and Pokédex that Professor Birch had given him, “That’s why I’m here.” Sapphire saw the items in Ruby’s hands and instantly snatched them away from him, “Professor Birch told me to give those to you,” he added, just so she wouldn’t get the wrong idea.

Sapphire squealed, jumping up and down with the items she had forgotten held close to her chest, “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” She lowered her hands and jumped towards Ruby, embracing him in a tight hug, “I don’t know how to thank you enough!” As she let go and quickly backed off she gently kissed Ruby on the cheek and giggled softly as he began to blush.

Ruby slowly raised a few fingers to touch the spot where Sapphire had kissed him, but stopped and laughed sheepishly when he noticed that she was staring at him. “It was no problem...” he said, scratching the back of his head as he was still slightly embarrassed, “I’m just glad I could help out a fellow trainer.”

Sapphire now began to blush too and quickly looked away from Ruby as she clipped the Pokéball’s to her belt and slipped the Pokédex into her pocket. “I know!” she said suddenly, lifting her head quickly and looking into Ruby’s eyes, “I’ll repay you by letting you have a battle with me!” She looked down at Connor, who was chatting with Sam, “You ready, boy?”

Connor jumped to his feet and his mood suddenly changed, he glared at Sam as if they were sworn enemies and prepared for battle. Ruby watched all of this, slightly in shock, but quickly got into the moment, “Yeah, Sam!” he said, clenching his fists and staring into Sapphire’s eyes, “Let’s show these two what we’re made of!”
-----
Sam and Connor were staring each other down, as were Ruby and Sapphire, “Let’s start this with a Scratch attack, Connor!” called Sapphire, making the first move. The small Fire-type Pokémon scratched at the ground, before charging towards Sam at full force.

“Ok, Sam!” called Ruby, preparing for a counter at, “Tackle that little chicken!” Sam cheered happily and ran at Connor as fast as he could, the two Pokémon were now on a collision course. Sam leapt forward as they got closer and lowered his head, but Connor was too quick for him... he spun around to avoid the attack and stuck out his claws, leaving a long scratch mark across the Water Pokémon’s side.

Sam crashed to the ground and slid across the dirt a couple of feet, “Good work, Connor!” called Sapphire, which made her Pokémon jump with joy. “Now let’s use Ember!” ordered Sapphire, thinking that this was going to be an easy win. Connor opened his mouth and shot a small ball of fire at Sam, who was still lying on the ground after the previous attack.

“Sam!” yelled Ruby, getting his Pokémon’s attention and causing him to jump back to his feet, “Use Water Gun, quick!” Sam spun his head to see the ball of fire raging towards him, he opened his mouth at the last second and sent a long stream of water towards Connor. The Water-type attack easily quenched Connor’s Ember and then smashed straight into him, before he had the chance to get out of the way.

Sapphire snarled angrily at Ruby, he was winning and she didn’t like it, “Connor! Shoot a fury of Ember attacks at Sam!” she screamed, her voice slightly croaky. Connor jumped to his feet after the previous attack and took a deep breath, he started shooting a barrage of Ember attacks at Sam and the Mudkip was now starting to look worried.

“Sam!” called Ruby, thinking as quickly as he could, “Shoot a Water Gun at the ground!” Sam didn’t stop to question Ruby’s orders and quickly shot a stream of water at the ground beneath him, the force of the attack sent Sam flying into the air... just in time to avoid Connor’s attack. The flames flew under Sam and headed straight for Sapphire, who swiftly dodged each and every attack.

“Hey!” screamed Sapphire, “You almost hit me!” Ruby snickered to himself as Sam landed in the mud that was created after his Water Gun attack, “You’re going to pay for that!” she yelled menacingly, “Use Scratch attack, Connor!” The tired Torchic sighed to himself and began running towards Sam as quickly as his feet could carry him.

“Get out of the way, Sam!” called Ruby, not wanting to take any chances with Connor’s Scratch attack. The Mudkip attempted to get out of the way, but the mud that he was standing in meant that he was now immobile, “Mudkip!” he called in distress. Ruby watched as Connor got closer to Sam, “Uhm...” he mumbled, trying to think of what to do, “Use Mud Slap!”

At the last second, Sam ripped his front feet out of the thick mud and whipped it at Connor. The mud flew through the air and landed right in the Torchic’s face, causing it to topple over forwards and slide into the mud... stopping inches away from Sam. “No!” called Sapphire, knowing that Ruby had just won the battle. Her head dropped and she raised Connor’s Pokéball, returning him in a beam of red light.

“I won!” cheered Ruby, running over to Sam and pulling him out of the mud, “You did great, buddy.” Sapphire slowly walked over to Ruby and extended a hand to him, which he took with a smile and shook, “Good battle.”

Okay, I just fully got to read both chapters, and might I just say they were both long and full of juice. I loved the great detail, and at every point I could easily visualize what was happening in each scene. I cannot wait to read more of this and see what happens next.
I am especially interested in the future contests to come! Good Job...Keep up the good work! Can't wait to read the next chapter.

Thanks to Pikalover10 and f l a s h for reading both chapters, as well as anyone else that stopped by to read them, but didn't post.
I'm having a bit of trouble with MS Word, so Chapter 3 might be a little while.
Once I can get it working, I'll get to work straight away!

This is a very good story. Each chapter is rich in detail and satisfies my writing appetite. There are a couple details nagging at me, but they don't affect story flow, so I don't mind a bit! Keep up the good work and update at your own pace!

Chapter 3: VS. Zigzagoon!

Ruby and Sapphire made their way back down to Oldale Town, the sun was high in the sky and the streets were busy... well, as busy as they could be with a population of just over ten. They both stopped when they reached what looked to be the very centre of town and suddenly had a predicament on their hands. Ruby turned to look out at Route 102, while Sapphire stared down at Route 101.

“I guess this is goodbye,” said Sapphire, breaking the silence that had plagued the two trainers since their battle ended up on Route 103. She rolled her head towards Ruby and looked at him with eyes that held the tiniest bit of sadness you could imagine, “I’ll be heading back home and you’ll be going off on your big adventure.”

Ruby had been staring out at Route 102 while Sapphire went on explaining how they were going to be splitting up, “It doesn’t have to be goodbye,” he replied, turning around to face his new found friend. Sapphire’s expression changed to one that said, “What do you mean?” and Ruby quickly caught it, “Well, you could come along with me, then call your dad from Petalburg City and tell him what you’re doing.”

Sapphire blinked a few times and then turned back towards Route 101, “Are you sure?” she asked, worried about what her dad would think, “I’m not sure if my dad would be happy with that idea.” She sighed and turned back to face Ruby, “I would really like to though...”

“Yes, I’m sure!” replied Ruby, now with his entire body turned towards Sapphire, “And, I’m sure your dad would have no problem with it.” By the way Ruby was “posing”, it looked as though he really wanted Sapphire to come with him, “Just take a chance and do something you want to do!”

Sapphire smiled slightly at Ruby, his “philosophical” words had somewhat loosened her up, “You know what?” she questioned, taking one last look at Route 101, “I will come with you!” She watched as Ruby’s face lit up and hers suddenly did the same as he embraced her in a huge hug that had her spinning through the air.

“You’re not going to regret this!” announced Ruby, still twirling Sapphire in his arms, “This will be the best decision you ever made!” Sapphire laughed as she saw the world as a blur of spinning colours, she thought to herself that this would be a great adventure and, someday, a wonderful story to tell.
----
Meanwhile, over in Petalburg City, there stood a small boy with dark green coloured eyes and a large blonde hairstyle that anyone would be amazed by. He was standing outside of a large white house and a small Poochyena was by his side, “Wally!” shouted the boy, his hands cupped around his mouth to amplify his young voice.

The boy was dressed in a light green jacket with sleeves much too long for him, worn over a pure white undershirt, and a pair of long blue jeans that got wider at the ends and were also much too long for his short stature. His jacket was covered with red symbols and green jewels, he also might have been wearing shoes... but his jeans were too long to tell.

The Poochyena barked as its trainer shouted, both of them wanting this “Wally” to appear. “Wally! Get your butt out here!” he screamed, causing people around him to stare in disgust at the language used by such a young boy. The Poochyena barked again, even louder this time, “What could he be doing, Rosie?” said the boy, turning to his Poochyena and asking if she knew or not.

“What’s up Emerald?” asked a male voice, causing the young boy to turn back towards the house. There he saw a tall boy with messy light green hair and grey eyes leaning out a window on the second storey, “My parents don’t appreciate you and Rosie yelling, right outside our house.”

Wally was dressed a bit more civilized than Emerald; his attire consisted of a white long-sleeved button-up shirt with two small pockets on the front and six large blue buttons, two on each cuff and another two just below the collar. His trousers were just as green as his hair and stood out very well compared to his shirt, on his feet he had blue and white shoes that were easily slipped on.

The boy, Emerald, rolled his eyes at his friend, “How else am I suppose to get your attention? I can’t just walk up to the front door; you know how much your dad hates me!” Wally suddenly pulled his head inside the window and Emerald could her him talking, or maybe arguing, with someone. After the talking stopped, Wally walked over to the window and slammed it shut.

“What are you doing, Wally!?” screamed Emerald, now getting really ticked off at his friend, “I thought we were supposed to be hanging out today!” Suddenly the front door of Wally’s house flew open and a tall man the dark brown hair stepped out, he gave Emerald a long hatred filled look and started stomping towards him.

“Get away from my house!” he yelled, drawing ever closer and getting even angrier with each step, “Wally’s not coming out today!” Rosie jumped forward to protect her trainer and snarled angrily at Wally’s father, “Get away from me!” he said angrily, swinging his leg towards the small dog-like Pokémon.

Emerald ran forward and scooped up Rosie, “C’mon girl, let’s get out of here,” he whispered, starting to back away from the anger filled man in front of him. Wally’s father scoffed at Emerald and his Poochyena, before turning around and heading back inside.

As soon as he was gone, Emerald put Rosie back down and stuck his tongue out, glaring angrily at the front door of the house. “That guy’s crazy,” pointed out Emerald to Rosie, not that he needed to tell her as she was well aware of it, “I guess it’s just you and me today...”

“Wah!”

The sound of a voice in distress caught Emerald’s attention and he looked up to see none other than Wally lying on the ground in front of the side gate beside his house. “Wally?” questioned Emerald, stepping closer to the scene, “What are you doing?”
-----
Back on Route 102, a wild Zigzagoon had jumped out of the bushes and startled both Ruby and Sapphire. Ruby, deciding this would be a good chance to catch a new Pokémon, sent Sam out to face the wild Zigzagoon and now an inevitable battle was about to begin.

“Use Tackle, Sam!” called Ruby, acting quickly and making sure the wild Zigzagoon didn’t have a chance to attack first. Sam lowered himself and bolted towards the wild Zigzagoon, who now knew it had no chance but to fight back. The wild Pokémon lowered its head and ran towards Sam with just as much speed and determination.

All seemed right for a full forced head on collision, but at the last second the Zigzagoon leapt into the air and smashed itself headfirst into Sam’s back. This caused Ruby’s Pokémon’s legs to buckle under the force and he crashed to the ground, sliding a few feet across the dirt.

“That’s a Headbutt, Ruby!” called Sapphire, using her knowledge of Pokémon to try and help her new friend, “It’s much stronger than Sam’s Tackle attack.” She shot her gaze over at Ruby, who looked back at her with worry in his eye, “This Zigzagoon is stronger than we first thought...”

While Ruby and Sapphire simply stared at each other and tried to think of what to do next, the wild Zigzagoon showed no sign of letting them plan an attack. It turned to face Sam and ran towards him, preparing to launch into another Headbutt attack and Sam was left wide open without any orders.

As Ruby turned to look at the scene he saw Zigzagoon leaping into the air, he knew exactly what it was about to do and quickly yelled the first thing that came into his mind, “Shoot your Water Gun at the ground!” Sapphire spun towards Ruby and stared at him with a confused expression, she was pretty sure the same tactic that he had used against her wasn’t going to work in this situation.

Unlike Sapphire, Sam didn’t stop to question Ruby’s choice and, just as the wild Zigzagoon was over his head, he shot a stream of water straight down. Sam lifted into the air just like he had done in the battle against Connor, but this time the tactic wasn’t used to avoid the opposing Pokémon. Sam and the Zigzagoon met in mid air, both travelling at equal speeds and crashing into each other with such force that they both went flying.

Sam, being underneath, simply crashed to the ground and fell to his stomach... while the Zigzagoon went skyrocketing into the air and came crashing down a few metres away, having sustained much more damage than Sam. Somehow, both Pokémon managed to clamber to their feet and stare each other down, not willing to give the other the sweet taste of victory.

“Water Gun, Sam!” called Ruby, hoping that Sam had enough strength to pull off the attack that might spell victory for him. The Mudkip didn’t hesitate at all, he lifted his head and shot a beam of water right at the wild Zigzagoon, landing a direct hit and sending the already injured Pokémon into the trunk of a nearby tree.

Ruby watched as the wild Pokémon fell to the ground, unconscious... but propped up by the tree that it had collided with. “Now...” he began, pulling an empty Pokéball from his belt and enlarging it by pressing the small middle button, “You’re mine, Zigzagoon!” With one swift swing of his arm, Ruby launched the ball at the Zigzagoon and hit it on the head, causing it to be engulfed in a beam of red light.

The ball fell to the ground and rocked once, twice, a third time and then...

-----
“That was cool, Wally,” said Emerald as he jumped around his friend, Rosie following him in every move, “It was like something out of “The Great Escape”. You total snuck out of your house and got away without anyone catching you!” Rosie barked along with every word that her trainer said, which was starting to get annoying from Wally’s point of view.

“It’s not that big a deal,” replied Wally, sticking his hands in his pockets and hunching his shoulders as he used the longer legs he possessed to hurry ahead of Emerald. Wally wasn’t very fond of his father and often tried to keep his family life separate from that of his friends.

Emerald blew a raspberry and threw his hands in the air, acting as if he didn’t care anymore, “Fine! You don’t have to take any credit for the coolest escape in history.” The small boy managed to catch up to his taller friend and stared up at him as they walked, “Are you feeling any better?” asked Emerald, his voice filling with a seriousness that was strange for him.

Wally glanced down at Emerald and faked a smile as he sighed, “I don’t need to use my respirator as much, but I’ve still got to take my puffer everywhere I go.” The green haired boy stuck his hand into his pocket and pulled out a small grey device that looked like a small metal can connected to a plastic tube, “I know it helps me to stay alive,” continued Wally, turning to look at Emerald, “But, I just wish my dad would get off my case about the whole sickness.”

The “sickness” that Wally is talking about, is asthma... a very serious case of asthma. Wally was born the one lung smaller than the other, as well as a weak respiratory system. He has trouble breathing sometimes and therefore needs to take his puffer everywhere, sometimes he ends up bedridden for days and his father is very “protective” when it comes to this problem.

Wally knows that his father is just trying to help him, but he wishes that he could just be a normal kid and play outside with his friends; thanks to the asthma... a normal life is very difficult for Wally. The boy snapped out of his thoughts and looked back down at Emerald, who was playing with Rosie as the gang walked along the dirt path.

“Rosie looks good,” said Wally, trying to start conversation and take his mind away from his asthma, “You really know how to look after Pokémon, Emerald.” Emerald glanced up at Wally and smiled, keep one hand down at his side so he could pat Rosie as they all kept walking. Suddenly, Emerald couldn’t feel Rosie anymore and he quickly spun around to see what the matter was.

Rosie had stopped a few metres back and was sniffing the air, “What’s up, girl?” asked Emerald, stepping over to the Poochyena so that he could try and get her to keep walking. Rosie didn’t seem to want to, she raised her head and barked before bolting off down the street, “Where are you going?” shouted Emerald, watching as his beloved Pokémon disappeared around a corner.

Wally glanced down at Emerald and the small boy did the same in return, they both knew what the other was thinking... they had to go and get Rosie. “Rosie!” they both shouted, breaking into a quick run as they followed the dog Pokémon’s trail.
-----
The shining afternoon sun glinted off the Pokéball in Ruby’s hand and caused it to sparkle beautifully, “My first Pokémon,” whispered Ruby, holding the ball up higher so that it sparkled even more.

WHACK

Ruby suddenly felt a cold wet feeling across his face, followed by a slight burn as the pain began to set in, “Sam!” he screamed angrily. The Mudkip, who was sitting on his trainer shoulder, wasn’t very happy about Ruby calling the Zigzagoon his “first Pokémon” and decided to teach him a lesson by slapping him in the face.

Sapphire giggled at the scene and smiled at Sam, who happily laughed and smiled back, “I don’t think Sam appreciates you calling that Zigzagoon your first Pokémon,” she pointed out, shifting her eyes to look at Ruby. “By the way,” she said, changing the subject, “What are you going to name that little guy?”

Ruby used his gloves to wipe the slime off of his face and then turned to Sapphire, “I’m not sure,” he replied honestly, “I haven’t thought about it.” Ruby pointed the Pokéball at his free shoulder and clicked the middle button, causing his newly caught Zigzagoon to appear on his shoulder, “Zigzagoon!”

“What shall I name you?” asked Ruby, the Zigzagoon stuck its tongue out at Ruby and then turned his head away. “Hey!” shouted Ruby, not liking the attitude of his new Pokémon, “Don’t stick your tongue out at me!”

The Zigzagoon continued to ignore Ruby and so the boy simply decided to name him without any input, “How about... Zachary?” The small brown Pokémon turned back to Ruby and stuck his tongue out at him again, before leaping off his shoulder and scurrying across the grass, “Come back!” called Ruby, holding out the Pokéball and returning his disobedient Pokémon in a beam of red light.

Sapphire laughed at Ruby again, “You’ve got some training to do, don’t you?”

Ruby sighed; “Yeah...” he clipped the Pokéball to his belt and turned his attention back to the road ahead of him. His eyes lit up when he saw the entrance to Petalburg City about ten metres away, “We made it!” he cheered, grabbing Sapphire by the wrist and pulling her along as he ran towards the city.

They entered Petalburg in double time and slowed down so that they could admire the city, “It’s beautiful!” announced Sapphire, spinning around as she took in every bit of detail that she could. “Why did my parents have to choose Littleroot Town over this? How could they!?”

Ruby laughed and began to survey the city himself, it was much larger than Littleroot and Oldale... but absolutely nothing compared to his home town of Goldenrod. He spotted the gym and shuddered, before quickly turning away from it... he knew what he had to do while he was here, but that doesn’t mean he was looking forward to it.

“What shall we do first?” asked Ruby, turning to Sapphire and smiling, “We could check out the stores or meet the locals, it’s up to you.” Before Sapphire could answer, Ruby heard the sound of someone, or something, running towards him and panting, like that of a dog.

Ruby turned to see what it was, but all he saw was a blur of grey and then he was on his back with a...

It's terrible, isn't it?

Anyway, as I just stated, Pokemon Special: Ruby & Sapphire is going on a hiatus with a chance that it won't be returning. I've been wanting to try a different style of writing and, since I already have a mini-series planned, I thought that now would be the best time. Another reason is cause I don't really like the two latest chapters that I have written, VS. Treecko and Ralts & VS. Spinda.

So, don't expect to see any new chapters any time soon, possible ever, but be on the look out for my mini-series.
