I very rarely will see a thread here relating to these so I figured I would make one.

Do you use virtual machines?
What software do you like? Vmware? Parallels?
How many do you have set up?
What is running in them?
For what reasons do you use them?

I just started today to use virtual Machines. So far I am having a good experience with VMWare Fusion. Although Parallels I like how you can drag apps off of the Windows Desktop. I only have one set up to save me some time from switching in Boot camp. I am using Windows XP in it and am right now confiuring a Windows 7 one. I use it as a way to switch to Windows Side if I need to run apps that are Windows Exclusive such as Movie Maker.

How about you guys?

I use VMWare Fusion. right now I only have 1 VM on my internal drive, Windows 7 x64 build 7000.
On my external drives, however I can easily pull up Windows 98, XP, and Vista, not to mention Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Ubuntu linux.

VMWare doesn't like it when I run more than one at once, but I rarely ever do that. I tried Parallels, but I found it a little hard to navigate, though I haven't tried any version since 2.

I hardly ever run a virtual machine on my computer, but on the rare chance that I do, it'll usually be VirtualBox that I'm running. I'll normally use it to test out various Linux distributions. I have Windows 7 actually installed with a triple boot, so I'm not using it within a virtual machine.

I've never tried vmware, so I can't say anything about it. I have used something called Mojopac, which amounts to a virtual copy of XP that I can use in place of my laptop, if necessary. I think I'll go check out VMware, as it looks like I might want to have something that can run '98 and other older OS's.

Basically, it is a program on your machine that allows you to run an operating system within a host operating system. Here's an example:

Say you are using Windows 2000 and want to try Windows 7. You could install Windows 7 on a virtual machine and run it, while still running Windows 2000.
Edit: Haha...I probably should have switched those...still, it's the same principle.
