For those of you who have tried the beta, how do you think 7's performance compares to that of Vista? Is it possible to just install 7 on an empty partition, or do I have to upgrade from Vista to it? I was also wondering if the new Media Player 12 is any good.

Windows 7 actually has A LOT potential.

Of course, it is still in BETA form, so full judgment cant be passed on whether it's better or worse than Vista. But the graphics are very well made, and I am satisfied with performance.

However, the BETA contains a few bugs, like a pink-out when screens glitch, some incompatibility of features to browsers other than IE.

I will switch back to Vista though. I just wanted to know how much potential this would have. You can try it for yourself and see its potential, or you can wait for the surprises.

Do I have to upgrade to 7 from Vista, or can I just boot from the 7 disk and install to an empty partition?

From my experiences with both the 6801 & 7000 betas I must say the speed and system requirements are far better than vista. You should be able to boot and install windows 7 after burning the downloaded disc image. However the current download period for getting the beta install disc image from microsoft has ended so in order to get the disc image you may have to find someone who can lend you a disc. You should still be able to get a valid serial from microsoft though.

You can do a fresh install in a separate partition...

I like it. The taskbar is DEF a step forward. At first I was not excited when I saw it, but now that I use it... I can see the definite benefits.

Otherwise I went through MAJOR headaches because of Norton 360 clashing with 7. Ugh. Fixed that though.

Having used XP until just over a month ago, I must say I'm impressed by Seven's stability. There have, though, been a few gripes I've had to put up with:

> To backup, I used CDs. One CD was dedicated to software. For some reason, none of those setup software installs/executables wanted to work in Seven. Although, re-downloading it from the origin site works perfectly. Perhaps it might have been an error in the burning process.
> Minor issue, but the RGB "Spotlight" doesn't go away when mousing off the taskbar or onto another part of the taskbar.
> I wouldn't mind an option to disable the taskbar window thumbnails. :(

Windows 7 = What Vista should have been. Look anywhere and thats the general consensus.

I had a problem in the beta in which I would loose transparency when Windows Explorer was opened but it was sorted out by an update.

Just to give an idea how well 7 works on another forum one member posted that they could open up to 300 IE pages before 7 crashed, on the same computer it took 25 in Vista.

Just forget Vista and look to 7.

Also you can either upgrade from Vista SP1 to 7 or clean install.

How are system specs/old hardware compatibility with Windows 7? I'd like to try it out on this computer, which I got in 2001.
they are surprisingly good. I've had it running in a virtual machine with a single 2.4GHz core and 512MB RAM and it still works well. (obviously I didn't have full aero enabled, but I can also say I installed it on another old machine and it works well, also w/o Aero)
Specs:
AMD Athlon 1.6GHz single core CPU
1.5GB RAM
integrated videocard, sound
Originally came and still has Windows XP SP0 recovery discs

If the specs are that high, I think I'll stick with XP. After all, Microsoft will keep supporting XP up to 2012 and this computer does everything I want it to (I don't need anything beyond Office 2003, Firefox, RPG Maker XP, etc.), so I guess I won't try it out.
