the screens are just too dang small, I can barely stand a 12" screen. No I don't have a netbook, though to be quite honest my main notebook computer is pretty portable itself and doesn't weigh more than maybe 4 pounds heavier than most netbooks out there.
Equipment:
Custom PC, MacBook Pro (MBPr), 3DSxl Blue, 3DS Midnight Purple, iPhone 4S Green

I'm actually thinking of getting a netbook now. Can anyone give me sort of a heads up in what to look for in one? I'm not looking to spend too much on it if I do get one--hopefully under $400~500. I'm just not sure where to start for it. I'd mostly be using it for note-taking and dragging it to campus everyday. I'll have a main computer at home so is it safe to look at the "lower end" models? Does it matter much?

:] Any answers are helpful!

I used a netbook once, and it was nice, the only downside to the Asus EEE PC was the overall small factor, my hands like a large keyboard, and the keyboard on that thing is smaller then my external CD tray's legnth front to back. my hands cramped up something aweful, so I prefer laptops over netbooks

I do not know much about netbooks myself, but I did have to try to troubleshoot one for the Helpdesk. If you plan on connecting to your university's wireless network, you might want to find out what type of encryption they use. It is probably WPA Enterprise. The netbook that I had to look at only supported basic WEP and WPA, so it could not authenticate to the network.

The one thing you don't want to compromise on is keyboard size, Erica :3 That's why I went with the Wind; because it has a 92% full size keyboard. If you're especially using it to take notes... well... the cramped keyboards of the Eee's and similar sized machines may be a little impeding to that.

9"/10" screen size is optimum because of the accompanying keyboard.

Heard good things about the Acer line actually. And of course I love how sexy the HP Mini is and how AMAZING the keyboard feels.

There're options for both an open network and a secure one but I'll look into the secure network's encryption. I actually would never have even thought of this.

I hadn't really thought of that. I've got small hands but I assume that would be hard to get used to. I'll look at the bigger sizes and see what's available. Thanks! :3

Well, I refuse to ever give HP my patronage again (at least in the near future) so the Mini is out. XD; But I've been looking at the Acer line, so I'm glad good things are being said about it. Thanks. ♥

If the open network is anything like ours, it will probably require some sort of "guest" access, since it's unencrypted. Students here cannot use the open network, we have to use the encrypted one.

I hate HP as well. The ones that my mom got always messed up. They were crap. (Don't ask what models they were, as I don't remember.) She's had so much trouble with HP (even with their support) that there is no way she'd ever use an HP again (or me, for that matter). I tried to fix them for her, but that didn't work.

Anyway...I probably won't ever get a netbook. I can see them being useful in certain situations, but I like my laptop too much to replace it. (It's bad enough I'm gonna have to get a tablet soon.)

lol why the HP hate?

It's far too long a story and off-topic for this thread but they're a terrible international company and I've had awful luck with my notebook. It's not what pisses me off the most but is at least a proper concern--I sent my laptop in for servicing last year when its screen bricked and they sent it back with a broken fan. :> The rest is all related to stupid warranty practises.

I personally didn't buy into the whole netbook thing. I even discouraged my brother from getting one simply because there's too much hype behind them. That and I think that my brother's use of the internet and such calls for something on the order of average power under the hood, and not something slow and with little support for expansion or anything up to date. I prefer my notebook, even though it does take some effort to lug it around. It's not that heavy anyways, and it's a full featured computer that can do almost everything the desktops can. With that said, I dont think I'll ever get a netbook because my notebook does the same job, and does a better job at it.

I have an Eee 904HA, and I love the thing to death. Upgraded to two gigs of ram, and the thing shows no slowdown even with Winamp, Firefox, and Word running, as well as my improved graphical interface applied.

I'm apprehensive about buying a Netbook mostly because my best friend bought one just because she thought it was cute - she already had a laptop that was portable enough xD; I don't see the point, I carried my hefty MacBook all the way to California and back to the UK ._. I'm most worried about the battery life, but I can get up to seven hours on here.

My NVQ assessor, though, he bought a Netbook for his backpack tour around Australia, so I think they're good for that.
