Hi, I don't know if this is the right thread for this, so please excuse me if it isn't.
Recently I managed to hatch a shiny Squirtle using the Masuda method, and now I would like to EV train it. I don't want it to evolve however, because shiny Blastoise looks kind of strange with the purple and green. I was also wondering what the best moveset would be, and which stats to EV train it in.

Squirtle Lv. 13
Quirky Nature
Effort Points:
0 0 1 0 1 6

If you need any other info please just ask, I appreciate your help!

Usually Quirky is not the best nature to battle with because it does not benefit the stats at all. Since this is not a specific want in the moveset, I will just give a link with some movesets for Blastoise (click here).

I realize that it doesn't have good IVs or nature, but I am just happy that it is shiny. Thanks for the link, I suppose pretty much anything that works for Blastoise also works for Squirtle. So maybe:

Surf---Always a good move
Rest----Good healing move
Ice Beam---Good against grass type
??????----Not sure what to put as a fourth move

As for EVs I don't know what is best for Squirtles.
Thanks for your help so far.

Really 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA is usually the most useful spread (I don't have any experience with Blastoise, so I cannot give a specific spread). Rest is usually set-up fodder without Sleep Talk, so put Sleep Talk in the last slot.

Anytime. :3

That would be great, but turns out that Squirtle can only learn Sleep Talk in Emerald by the move tutor. So I guess I will need something else, because there is no way to trade from Generation IV to III. Even if there was, I don't have Emerald anyway.

Thanks for your help Pokedra, I think I might just go with that, of course, since I accidentally beat a few pokemon already, I would have to make the
EV: 251 HP / 252 Def/ 1 SpD/ 6 Spe

But since Squirtle can't learn Yawn I will go with:
Surf
Rapid Spin
Toxic
Ice Beam

IV's can matter quite a bit.

For example a Adamant Salamence with 252 EV's in Spe and 1 IV in Spe will get 268 Spe whethas a Adamant Salamence with 252 Spe EV's and a 31 IV in Spe will get 299 Spe so it can make quite a difference.

@Chaostorm
I know it doesn't do anything, but I already have that one effort point, so I just listed it anyway.
Then you should have 252 HP / 244 Def / 4 SpD / 4 Spe, so you don't waste the 3 EVs, and make use of them.

@Keyaki
If the two pokemon that you are breeding are from different languages, then the chances of getting a shiny pokemon are four times higher than normal. So 1 in 2048 instead of 1 in 8192. Still very unlikely, but I got a shiny on my 40th egg.

I'm slightly beginning to understand EV's I think..

I just was wondering, what does something like 4HP/252spAtk/252spDef/ mean?
It means that there is 4 EVs in HP, 252 EVs in SpA, and 252 EVs in SpD. For more information of EVs, look at the second post, in the "Compiled Guides" sticky.

You can only add EVs using the vitamins until the Pokemon has 100 EVs in that stat. In other words, you need to start with the vitamins, or else they will not work.

It's hard to fit an Umbreon on teams these days due to the extreme offensive nature of the game that is played. However, it does have one useful niche...

[email protected]
Careful
252 HP/92 sp.def/164 speed

Mean Look
Baton Pass
Wish
Taunt/Yawn/Toxic/Protect

Umbreon is notorious for trap passing. Mean Look whatever stays in/switches in, and if you can survive and take advantage of the Pokemon, Baton Pass to a counter or set-up sweeper and pound away. Wish is for survival, as well as team support.

Last slot is for whatever you need the most. Taunt to stop phazers, Yawn to put counters to sleep/switch out, giving you some SR damage, as well as a better chance to set up Mean Look/Baton Pass. Toxic is to allow Umbreon to at least do some sort of damage to non-steels/poisons.

Other sets include Cursepassing (Curse, Baton Pass, Payback, Wish) and support (Wish, Yawn, Toxic, etc.) These sets need different EV spreads, so if they are more appealing, just post.

The Yarzan species is making progress.
