Wow. So.. NASA are saying: "Our world is doomed in 100 years. So we're looking for another one".. uh - huh. I think we (human beings) should just live until our time comes to all die off. It doesn't matter if we don't survive, as we will just ruin the "New" Earth as we did with the Earth we have now. I know, it's very interesting, but a planet that can sustain life will be a rare find indeed. And, if we were to find one, how would we get there when our Earth is doomed?

Wow, 'bout time...
I hope they do find other life, like, advanced life... well, at least as advanced as we are.
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing ends up being an epic fail, though.

What a wonderful, purposeful use of our money and resources [/sarcasm]

Sorry folks, but NASA is the epitome of pork barrel spending. We are in the worst financial crisis in decades, and somehow they find the money to fire a multi-million dollar spacecraft into orbit. Somebody see a problem here?

...We are far from getting anywhere in the search for life outside our planet. In theory, we have already "invented" things like ion drives, which fold the space in front of a spacecraft and push the space behind the spacecraft, making a ship move much faster. But to actually build one would take much more than a few years :/

I thought that one of Jupiter's moons was theoretically capable of supporting life? There's a theory that underneath the frozen ice on...ummm....the moon beginning with I, there's liquid water, in which microbes and such could survive. But that's not advanced life, I guess :P

Wait, since when have we found life? If you're talking about the bacteria from Mars, there is no evidence that those things were actually bacteria, rather than just bubbles of gas.

Um... no... that is not what NASA is saying at all. The purpose of this exploration is to see if planets like ours exist, maybe detect some life on the side. That is all. But hey, maybe we could travel to another planet if Earth does become doomed, but that is just starting to sound paranoid.

My bad, its called Europa. Doesn't begin with I at all. here's a link to an article about it.

So its possible that life exists in our own solar system (apart from us, durrr) but it probably isn't advanced life.

So are they giving up on Mars? It doesnt make me feel small though. it just seems like I am destined to see another planets surface for myself eventually.

No they are not giving up on Mars. And NASA is not planning to go to an extra-solar planet at all. They are simply trying to detect Earth-like planets.

It is called multitasking. :P

Why are they doing this when the economic crisis is in it's peak? If not somewhere high.

I still think that this is a waste of money, however. Also, this is a three-year trip for searching for planets that could sustain life, right?

Well, we should just stay here on our own planet and actually wait for our doom, as to not escape into another solar system and wreak havoc upon that place as well.

I'm pretty sure this was being planned long before the economic crisis started, so you can't really blame them for using so much money. I, for one, am very excited to here their results in three years. But even if they do find Earth-like planets, they'll be so far from us we have any way to contact them for a long while. From what I hear, radio waves traveling at the speed of light can't even reach Alpha Centauri without becoming super scrambled.

I'm sad that I'm not going to be able to live long enough to witness all these amazing milestones, like the actual discovery of other life and the colonization of other planets. But I think this kind of stuff is incredibly fascinating. Best of luck to NASA and it's epic search =P

Oops. Sorry. I should read the whole of the article.. *Embarrassed - VERY Embarrassed*. Thanks for clearing that up for me! ( I now have no dignity left - again)

This can still pospone it, in my opinion.

@Proof: I have the same feeling. I always thought that stuff like this happens when there are multiple signs of a collapsing earth.

The money was probably already given to NASA a while ago before they started their research, so there would be no point in postponing it.

Well, then I'll be damned.

I'm still interested in what will happen, and if the spacecraft is going to return at all.

The NASA budget is something like $15-20 billion a year. Considering how much we're spending in Iraq and domestic programs, that's next to nothing.
