(I know it's a little slow, but this is just introducing everyone and getting things set up. Bear with it.)
New Silver Isle. To most, the name is meaningless, just a faceless island in an unknown place. But to the elite few who have been there, New Silver is the intellectual's Eden; all of the world's greatest minds have either lived there, learned there, or worked there. Many of the world's greatest inventions were born there, yet to take part in the legendary innovations that shape the world, one must be content to live in obscurity, for all who participate in the epic experiments on that isle are sworn to a solemn vow of secrecy. Their brilliance defines all of society, and yet they all must die nameless and faceless to the world. Yet without them, the world would be a very different place. One young scientist in particular, by the name of Dr. Kain R. Moriko, very nearly brought the world to an end. On a stormy day, the good doctor, consumed in his work as usual, fell asleep at his terminal. He had no idea that when he awoke, his life would never again be the same...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Yes! That's it! Finally!" Across the room, a man sitting at a terminal turned towards the voice.
"Finally get it working, Kain?" The man was short, and had dark skin and short, dark hair. He wore a white labcoat that was noticeably cleaner than the other's.
"I've finally got the programming right!" The man called Kain stood and ran his hand through his short, blue hair. "Of course, it was only a matter of time; I AM a genius, after all!"
"You're POSITIVE it's right this time?"
Kain looks at him scornfully. "Did you forget who you're talking to? Of course it's right! I'm positive of it!"
"You remember what happened last time you were 'positive,' right?" He gestured at the lab around them; the place was in shambles. Paper and trash was everywhere, and the walls, floor, and ceiling were covered in scorch marks.
"A minor miscalculation, nothing to worry about. You really must have more faith in me, Carde..."
"Forgive me, sir. I just wouldn't want anything to happen to you. You're an asset to this company, you know...."
"Hahaha! Quite right m'boy; this company would be nothing without me, and they know it! Now then..."
Kain opens a drawer and removes a small bag. He empties its contetns on the table: two standard pokeballs, scrap metal, and various nuts and bolts. "Now watch!" He places the various metal scraps into a container on top of the machine. He then takes the two pokeballs and places them into slots on opposite sides of the machine. "When I activate the device, it will, through an ingenious process of my own design, fuse the two pokeballs with the scraps of metal, common base material, to create a single, much more powerful pokeball! The pokeball manufacturers would make twice the money, since any trainer worth his salt would have to buy them in pairs! Hahaha! I'm brilliant!"
"Look, Kain..."
"No time for doubts, m'boy! It's now or never!"
"Kain, everytime you've tried this in the past, it's failed. Don't you think you should focus your efforts on something more...achievable?"
Kain quickly turns bright-red. "Something more...are you daft, boy?! This device is my brainchild; it'll make me famous!"
Carde scratches his head. "Uhh, Kain? You're sworn to secrecy, remember? Credit for the invention would go to the company, not you..."
"I know that! But I'd still know that, worldwide, people were using MY invention! And besides, if I request it, I'm sure I could get it named after me, that wouldn't violate secrecy, would it? Besides, what are they going to do? Refuse? Hahahaha!"
Carde sighs and steps back. A piece of paper sticks to his foot, and he scowls, trying to shake it off. Meanwhile, Kain inputs a rather complex-looking code into the device from his notepad. He flips a switch, and the machine roars to life. It begins to hum and vibrate lowly. Carde (who has given up on the sheet of paper) glances at Kain, who stands with a look of childish glee on his face. Suddenly, the machine starts to rock violently, and emits a loud grinding noise. The lights dim. Carde takes a step back.
Kain despairs. "No! Not again! Why? How...?!"
"Kain! It's not working. Pull the plug! NOW!"
"But I was so close..."
"KAIN!"
Kain inches forward and hits a button on the machine. He slows, gives one last violent twitch, and dies. Kain stands in front of it, looking forlorn. Carde looks down.
"Well...did the pokeballs at least make it?"
Kain opens the ceter hatch of the machine, when a fused heap of slag lies. His shoulders slump.
"Kain, I'm sorry..."
Kain straightens up and speaks. He tries to sound stable, but his voice is shaky. "N-not to worry, just another...just another miscalculation. I'll get it working, even if I have to spend the entire night here again..."
"Kain, you've spent the last week -wait, no, make that ten days -in the lab. Go home and get some rest, before you collapse!"
"G-Go home?! Now?! I'm THIS close to getting it to work! I'll stay here all night if I have to!"
"Kain, take it easy! Think about Camella. What'll she do if you kill yourself from exhaustion?!"
Kain ignores him, and kneels by the machine. Carde sighs again and returns to the terminal.
*later*
Carde is preparing to leave. Kain is busily typing at the terminal. CArde takes one last look at his mentor. "A storm's headed this way. Just...be careful, okay?" Kain ignores him. "See you tomorrow, sir."
"Yes, yes, see you tomorrow." He doesn't even look up. Carde shakes his head and leaves. As the door closes, Kain pauses for a moment, then returns to his work.
*much later*
The storm has landed...hard. Rain pounds the lab's reinforced windows, and thunder crashes constantly. Kain is still at the terminal, but he's beginning to get sleepy...
What if I...? No, no, that won't work. That one is a better fit... He yawns loudly, and lays his head on the keyboard. Getting tired...I'll just rest my head...for a moment...then it's...right...back to.....zzzzzzzzz.......
A loud, violent bolt of lightning crashes outside, but Kain doesn't stir. The lights begin to dim...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kain has fallen asleep at his terminal. The storm outside is at its worst, and Carde is speeding home, hoping that Kain is okay. Little does he realize that when he returns tomorrow, Kain won't be there...
And neither he nor Kain can predict what happens next...
