Speaking as someone who is Irish, I oppose the notion a lot. Mostly because trying to make Ireland a completely independent country will just cause more pointless killings by a new IRA, like the three we've seen in the last week alone. It's unnecessary; everyone is pretty much happy so long as they're living in a land of peace. To stir up something like that wouldn't be too cool.
'It's been a prevalent notion. Fallen sparks. Fragments of vessels broken at the Creation. And someday, somehow, before the end, a gathering back to home. A messenger from the Kingdom, arriving at the last moment. But I tell you there is no such message, no such home -- only the millions of last moments . . . nothing more. Our history is an aggregate of last moments.'

Speaing as someone who also is Irish, I think it would be a big waste of time that wouldn't end up solving anything. I was born in Northern Ireland, ie. England's half, and, as my mother has said, she doesn't see any difference between people in the north and people in the south. If anything, Ireland becoming an independant nation would just cause more problems.

I think it should be left as it is and the idea should just be forgotten.

Speaking as someone who's distant Irish ancestors immigrated to America over a hundred years ago... *shot*

I probably don't know enough about the topic to have a very valid opinion, but I do know that what the IRA is doing is wrong, and they are no different than groups like Al Qaeda. I think what .Swift said is right, things should just be left the way they are, and should be best forgotten. And obviously, if the North Irish really do have some valid reason to be a part of Ireland and not the U.K., then there are other, more peaceful, and infinitely more effective ways to go about doing so.

Being English I personnaly dont think that Ireland should be independant its not as if we are horrible to them and also we give them 90% independance not as if we are a dictatorship for them

You could almost compare it to Scotland and Wales there are Independant under English command but do you see any riots at Picadilly square?????

Didnt think so

I don't really know anymore. I'm Irish and I used to wish Ireland was independent, but most people go to the north now, since it's cheaper. I'd hate to be ruled by a queen though, but if people from the north want to be connected to Britain, I have no problem with it. I'm not affected anyway.

The Queen is only a token figure, she doesn't actually have much say these days.

More people in N.Ireland want to remain British than those who do not, so let them be.

Not to defend the actions of the IRA or Al Qaeda, but what one calls terrorism, another calls patriotism. :/

I'm not pro-IRA by any means, I just think that Ireland is owed freedom for the same reason why Quebecers want to be free. It's part of their heritage :/

I'm totally for it. I find the whole "United Kingdom" thing very conservative, old fashioned and embarassingly imperial. They should just let the Irish become Irish - not British. And no - most people do now want N. Ireland to remain in Britain - that's nonsense. It's more of a case of - more English and wealthy Loyalist Irish want N. Ireland to remain part of the UK so that they don't become the minority in a country actually given back to its own people.

I'm very sympathetic with Sinn Fein and the old IRA movements as all they wanted was to return their country back to the way it should be. Plus, the Loyalist Irish are a pretty shocking and disgusting set of people. I don't think, in British politics, there has ever been a leader quite so disgusting as Ian Paisely... He's actually offensive to listen to :O
