I'm going to assume you have a PC, if it's a mac, can't help because I'm useless. See the print screen button? Press that while viewing your desktop, or anything you want to capture, then open MSpaint, photoshop, whatever, and paste. Et voila, your image is there. Just save it and you're done.

Never heard of a program that screenshots sections of your desktop. The only way I would know is mentioned in the above post. Although, Quickshot allows you to take screenshots and uploads the links for you straight away. And you can even take screenshots of certain window portions of your screen. For example, I can screenshot winamp.

Or an MSN window conversation, a folder window, etc.

On a mac the combination would be Shift + Command ⌘ + 3. And in most scenarios it will save it to your desktop already to go for you.

And if your on a PC and only want a specific part then last I checked if you held down alt while pressing Print screen it would crop it to your current App.

Adding onto this, I find that Shift + ⌘ + 4 on a Mac will establish a cross-hair you can simply drag upon certain parts of your screen to capture before the image saves onto your desktop. So if comes a time where you only want a certain section rather than the entirety, this is definitely the command to help.

If you have a Vista, you can do cool stuff under the Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool... Though you could just do that in Paint, I think it's fun chopping up my computer screen hehe.
