That does make sense. Maybe they need a name quickly and thought of Crystal. :/

Good point Platinum is a metal and Crystal is a colorless gem. But Diamond/Pearl/Crystal sounds weird.
Gold/Silver/Platinum sounds weird... So I don't think should be Crystal D/P/C is weird sounding like I said before and G/S/P sounds weird....
So it's fine as it is.

I don't see how it's weird. I mean, there's silver, gold, and platinum credit cards and I'm sure that most used them once.

Crystal is indeed a colorless gem. However, as someone else stated, what about the Legendary Pokémon. You can't really switch Suicune with Giratina Origin.

I'm just goin' to say that Nintendo should've looked closer at what they're doin', but they can't really see the future and this happenin'.

I bet if it were originally Diamond/Pearl/Crystal instead of Diamond/Pearl/Platinum it wouldn't sound weird to you. Usually, when people say something sounds "weird", it's just because they're used to the way that they've always heard it.

I've thought that "Crystal" should be named "Platinum" ever since the game came out. When I first heard there was going to be a third added on to G/S, I thought that it was going to be called Platinum, until the official name was announced. And then when I heard about Platinum I thought, "Well, NOW they use it..."

From an in-game perspective, though, I guess it makes more sense that Crystal is Crystal. The mascot Pokémon of that game was Suicune, which looks more like crystal than like platinum.

And while crystals, diamonds, and pearls have more in common with each other than platinum, diamonds, and pearls, logically it wouldn't make sense for Crystal to be the upgraded-and-better-than-ever Diamond/Pearl. Diamonds and pearls both are a lot more valuable than crystals are, so based on the names you'd think the game would be less valuable than either of the originals. (They might be worth more than platinum too, but I don't exactly know the "conversion rate" between diamonds, pearls, and platinum. :P) If Crystal were part of the Gen IV trilogy, it would make more sense for the games to be Crystal/Pearl/Diamond or Pearl/Crystal/Diamond than for the games to be Diamond/Pearl/Crystal.

Then again, crystal probably isn't worth more than gold, either. Ehn.

This one is my hack.

Yes I agree on that Platinum should be part of the Emerald, Ruby, and Sapphie area and Crystal should be in the Diamond and Pearl area, but at that point, Nintendo and Gamefreak weren't thinking.

They do not sound weird to me. I heard people use gold, silver, and platinum in the same sentence when they refer to coins, trophies and medallions. Diamond, Pearl, and Crystal does not sound weird but there is one thing I would like to say is that Crystal is a molecular structure not a gemstone, however rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, and diamonds are composed of crystals. I also notice though that the dominant color on the Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald are red, blue, and green which are the same are the same titles of the three first generation games which were Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue. (Note that the original Pokemon Green was not released outside of Japan, but its remake was). All of these are probably coincedences though because the people at Gamefreak cannot see what game they are going to make years later.

The reason why the third version of the second generaton games being name Crystal instead of Platinum was most likely because Gamefreak wanted to name the game based on the what colors the mascot of the game had and they had not make a Pokemon at that time that matches Platinum in color.

I thought this since I heard it was to be called "Platinum".
However, I guess Suicune makes more sense for Crystal than Platinum (or copper, zinc, etc.) so yeah. Funny thing is that directly after Crystal came 5 more gem based games (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl) than another metal, like Gold & Silver, Platinum. I wonder just what they'll switch to when they run out of gems or metals, unless they go back to colors.

I'm currently creating my own pokemon rpg. called Pokemon Blood Stone
Thats nice and all..but please try to stay on topic next time, otherwise you may get flamed. I won't do that, but I'm giving you a li'l warning.

It really would make more sense, but I guess Game Freak thought Crystal would be more applicable to Suicune at the time, considering its crystalline features and all. But now that Diamond and Pearl are out, I suppose they saw no other choice than to give Platinum to the third game.

Yes, but if it was called that from the beginning, chances are, you wouldn't be saying that. D/P/C only sounds weird because we are used to D/P/Pt. See what I mean?

As far as I'm concerned, I don't think that Pokemon Platinum really has anything to do with Crystal at all, but in the same way they are alike. Here's what I mean:

Platinum is essentially the "Emerald" of the Diamond/Pearl series, since it's just like Diamond and Pearl, but with the following things:

-Focus on a specific rare character other than the previous two (Giratina is to Platinum like Rayquaza is to Emerald ololo)
-Inclusion of multiple Battle Buildings instead of just the Battle Tower (again, Emerald had the Battle Frontier, Platinum copied and pasted exact process but with less buildings)
-Updated sprites.

The only new thing that differentiates Platinum from Emerald (and D/P, for that matter) is that warped-dimension zone thing, which I haven't seen because I don't own the game.

Crystal shares this same concept, but on the GBC. Also, no Battle Tower. However, there are moving Pokemon sprites and the ability to choose between a boy or a girl, so... you know, it's a slight win-win there. ^_^

Yellow shares the same interesting concept. The only thing that differentiates this from those is the focus on Pikachu, lots of things from the anime, updated sprites and the Surfing Pikachu minigame.

So, in a way, Crystal and Platinum are a lot alike. Same goes for Emerald and Yellow, too. Maybe all Pokemon games that are #3 in a list share this concept? :D
