Okay. I realized that I'm not able to write a journey fic, so I'm going to try something new. Advice would be appreciated. :)
Also, this story will probably have some minor violence and stuff. (You know...hunting. There'll probably be some violence there.) Sorry, the prologue is a bit short.

Prologue

Betrayal. As I stared into the eyes of my trainer, that feeling washed over me. Betrayal. But why? What had I done wrong?

"Go away," he whispered.

I didn't move. I simply gazed at him pleadingly, begging him to explain. He looked at me coldly and said louder, "Out."

And so I ran. I ran until my paws began to ache, until my breathing became unsteady and until my vision began to blur. I gradually slowed, and, when I finally became too tired to stand, I staggered, stumbling towards an abandonned den under a tree.

Like a half-dead Pokemon crawling to its grave, I slowly crept inside, ignoring the foul stench that floated in the air. Then, I curled up on the hard dirt, my bushy tail covering my nose, letting sleep overtake me.

Chapter One

My eyes snapped open. Light fluttered down from the entrance of the den. Yawning, I heaved myself up and shook off the dirt from my fur. I stared at my paws. They were covered in deep cuts and slashes and small pebbles had lodged themselves in. I began licking them absentmindedly, grimacing as I tasted the sour and bitter taste of dirt.

My ears perked up. I could hear a faint rustling sound outside. Slowly, I crept out of the den and sniffed the air at the entrance. There was a strange, tangy scent in the wind. I stiffened. I recognized this scent.

"Um...hello?" I asked quietly. "Is anybody there?"

A loud, rippling snarl was heard. A large figure leaped out of the bushes, pinning me down.

"Who are you?" he spat. "What are you doing in our territory?" He was big, larger than any Pokemon I knew. His shaggy, orange fur was streaked with black, and a long, wild mane grew around his head.

I trembled. "N-Nothing...I could leave if you like..." I frowned. This Pokemon was different from the one she had seen in the past.

He snarled again. "You think you can trespass on our territory and leave as you like? You better be prepared to face the punishment!"

I was about to open my mouth to reply when a high, tinkling laugh was heard. I watched in amazement as another creature walked gracefully out of the bushes, an amused expression on her face.

"You're in quite a grumpy mood this morning, aren't you?" she asked, laughing. "Did you find maggots in your nest?"

The other Pokemon--the one that was pinning me down--growled. "What are you doing here, Sunfur?"

Sunfur dropped two Pidgey on the ground. "Hunting."

I stared at her. She was one of the most beautiful creatures I had ever seen. She had soft, cream-coloured fur. It was so glossy it really did reflect the light of the sun. No wonder she was called Sunfur. Her deep, scarlet eyes were amused. But the thing that captivated me the most was her tail. Or rather, her tails. She had nine!

"This one was trespassing," the one on me grunted.

Sunfur's beautiful eyes gazed at me. "Do you really think so? She stinks of humans. She must be from the cities."

"That's an even better reason," he muttered, but he loosened his grip on me a bit.

"Um...excuse me?" I asked timidly. He glared at me. I flinched. "Well...I'm really sorry about intruding on your territory...I didn't mean to."

He stared at me like I was insane. Then, he glanced confusedly at Sunfur. She shrugged. "She apologized. Besides, do you really think a small kit like her could harm any of us?"

He seemed to take that into consideration. "Fine," he conceded. "But she must leave immediately." Sunfur winked at me.

The large Pokemon got up and left with Sunfur. She nuzzled him a bit, and then the two of them disappeared into the undergrowth. I sat up, dazed. What had happened?

One thing was for sure. That big one had almost the same scent as that Pokemon I had met that day. It had been a...what was it again? I racked my brains. Oh yes: it had been a Growlithe. A dog-like creature that attacked with fire. I winced. I owed a lot to the nine-tailed one; the element I feared the most was fire. Sighing, I got up on my paws and sniffed around. I had better leave this place as soon as possible.

The metallic, rusty scent of the city was easy to find. I followed it down a small trail, running into new scents like wild plants and Pokemon along the way. I could hear the whistling of the trains when I realized that I was being followed. Whipping around, I saw a small Sentret quickly scurry back to a tree.
After a moment, the Sentret poked its head out. Then, he took a cautious step. He looked at me strangely

"I won't hurt you," I said softly.

Slowly, he took a small step. I stayed still. Little by little, he came closer. Then, when he was only a foot away from me, he sniffed me curiously. I sighed. It seemed like I was the 'strange' one here.

"Get away from my child!"

I turned around in alarm. A small form knocked me down. The Furret hissed at me, teeth bared menacingly. I groaned. Not again.

Chapter Two

"I'm sorry," she said again.

I licked my chest, annoyed. Not because of my wounds; except for a nasty gash across the shoulder, my injuries were quite minor. No, it was because the Furret was apologizing. Again.

"It's all right," I told her briskly. "It was an accident, Mrs. Furret."

She twitched. "Please call me Flora. This is my son Sonny." She brushed the Sentret's head with her tail. "And your name was...?"

"Eevee," I replied flatly. She looked at me in surprise.

"Yes, it's obvious that you're an Eevee," Flora said hesitantly. "But what I meant was, do you have a name?"

"Nope," I answered bluntly. "I'm just plain Eevee."

The Furret frowned. "That's not good. Everybody deserves a name."

"Well, apparently, he thought I wasn't worth giving a name to," I said. I gasped. Too late.

"He?" Flora seemed interested. "Your father? Do you come from a pack?"

I shook my head guiltily. "No...I'm...I come from the city."

She jumped, startled. "The city? You live with humans?" She spat the last words out like they were poison.

I nodded. "But my trainer--I mean, I ran away from him. And I ended up here." A prickle of shame ran through my back at the lie.

Flora's expression softened. "Oh. Well, I guess that's fine." Then, absentmindedly, she added, "Do you have a place to stay? If you don't, you could always live here with us."

I gasped. "Here? I couldn't!"

She shot me a suspicious look. "And why not?" she asked sharply.

I shifted uneasily on my paws. "W-Well...because...I wouldn't want to intrude...I mean...I would cause trouble..." I shuddered at the thought of the big fire creature.

"Not at all!" Flora cried, waving her tail around. "It's the least I could do, after giving you a scare like that."

I shook my head. "I better not. I...I'll find a place of my own." I flinched. In the city, of course!

"No, stay with us!" She sounded impatient now. "You'll see. It might not look like it, but this place has enough room for twenty of us!"

I glanced around. True, the hollow tree in which the Furret nested in was warm and cozy. She had covered the 'ground' with soft, sweet-smelling herbs and hay. The hole that was the entrance gave a spectacular view on the fields of grass below. Of course, we could always close up the entrance with the branches of leaves that grew nearby. And if I stayed here, my scent would probably mingle with the Furret's. Maybe the big Growlithe creature wouldn't find me!

"Okay," I said slowly. "But just for a short while."

Flora beamed at me. "Great! I'll show you to your room."

I gazed confusedly at her. Room? We were in a small hole!

"Follow me," she chimed. She leaped high into the air, landing gently on a wooden platform over our heads. It had been hidden in the shadows, so I hadn't noticed it. Aha. So that was another 'floor'.

I followed her. I had a little more trouble jumping up than she had, but when I finally managed to scramble up the platform, I knew it had been worth it. It was a small hole, just like the 'floor' down below, but this one had no entrance or exit, and was covered in fresh green moss. The 'room' was round, with plenty of space to stretch and sleep. In one corner stood a small pile of nuts.

Flora blushed. "Those are the provisions we've made so far. I had been planning on stocking our food here, but now that I think of it, I could always dig another floor. You can have this room."

"You dug this room?" I asked incredously. The walls were perfectly smooth, and the shape of the room was absolutely natural-looking. It was hard to believe that someone had dug this.

"Yes, yes, that's why we Furret have claws!" She held them up proudly. "Digging through wood is no problem."

"Wow," I breathed. "I wish I could do that." I could dig my own shelters in trees!

She shrugged. "Why don't you learn. You have claws. You can leap. You can be just like us."

I blinked several times. That thought had never ocurred to me before. I had always thought that each species of Pokemon could do their own thing, but that there was no way other species could do the same thing. Could they?

"I'd be glad to teach you," Flora said brightly. She gave a little jump of excitement. "You could learn at the same time as Sonny!"

My whiskers twitched. Not that anyone could have noticed, of course. They were so thin you could hardly see them. "I don't know. I'm different from you guys."

"Tch," Flora scoffed. "Different. All of you people really have a problem with that word, don't you? Does it matter if you're different, if you can do the same things? A Kakuna can do what a Metapod can do, right?"

I considered it. Finally, I smiled. "Maybe you're right."

The Furret sniffed. "I am right. Now come along, it's time for you and Sonny's first food gathering lesson."

As I leaped down the platform, this time going down easier than going up, I was faced for the very first time the possibility of doing something different. With different people. Strangers, almost. I shook my head at that thought, smiling again. No, not strangers. These people could be my family one day.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" Flora tapped her paw impatiently. She and Sonny were already waiting at the entrance. Or exit, it depended on how you looked at it.

"Coming," I half-sang as I hurried to them.
