This is something I'm sure you've noticed. While plenty of Normal types (e.g. Rattata, Pidgey, Slakoth etc.) are actually kinda normal-looking, plenty more (e.g. Porygon, Castform, Ditto) are actually pretty weird.

Does the Normal type need to be split into two new types? Or does it maybe need a new name?

Discuss.

Interesting idea but I agree that they're okay the way they are.

If they were to make a new type based on the likes of Porygon/2/Z perhaps they could call it 'Virtual'? But then what would it be effective against etc? Just some food for thought.

I don't think it's necessary. Their common thing is that they haven't got another element, like fire, electric or ice and such. (except for species like Pidgey and Girafarig) And that is what makes them normal. Their main weapon is their normal type attacks. Which aren't tough enough to be called fighting type.

I have noticed this too and I wouldnt mind an "abnormal" type but it would take away certain STAB moves. But even some normal typed moves could be "abnormal"!

Those who are in that normal group are there because they don't fit in with the other type group. Well, that's just my observation.

Anyways, I see no faults in not making another group for those who's feature looks weird.

For example, Ditto is in the normal category because it doesn't fit anywhere else.

i agree that maybe another type isn't necessary, but should the type maybe be renamed? After all, "normal" is only really an accurate description for about half of the pokemon it refers to.

Don't see a new type happening - stuff like IVs would quite possible have to change (Hidden Power for instance relies on IVs in a big way), the balance that's more or less there would more than likely be unsettled, and so forth.

As for the name... well, there's always been some disagreements or mentions on how some types sound odd. But for me, I'm pretty much fine with Normal, tbh, even if some of them are far from it. Thing is, where else exactly would they be put under then? Seeing as a large number of them don't use any 'elements', like Fire-types do, or have a characteristic, that would class them in the Steel or Fighting groups, normal for me is for those without such things. That's how I interpret it anyway.

Just randomly grabbing the examples in the first post: Porygon's a digital Pokemon - doesn't really fall into the others. Castform changes form and type according to the weather, but begins as a Normal type in normal weather conditions, which makes sense to me, and Ditto also doesn't really fall into any other group, IMO. It changes into any other Pokemon upon using Transform, but until then has no different element or anything that it can use. (And arguably, it's flubber-like shape is what it, ahem, 'normally' looks like until it changes into something else - that's its base form.)

Don't see an actual official name change either - the type names are pretty much set already, and given all the years they have remained what they are, they'll probably stay like that. But talking about it hypothetically is fun, anyways. -_-

What about the other half?

Also, even if the word normal can't really describe all the Pokémons in that category, neither can abnormal. The only difference is that one is opposite than the other.

The name of this category has been set since the beginning of the game, anime even. It's most likely not going to change.

I always thought that the Normal type was more of a miscellaneous typing where everything without a real elemental type fell in. I think it's fine the way it is.
This is me too. I never thought of "normal" pokemon as normal - just a name for all those that aren't covered in fire or leaves, etc. Essentially the "everything else" category.

It's not called normal because of how it looks.

It's just it's type. Most Pokemon just happen to look like their types.

Normal is basically "Urban", "Typeless" or "Natural" - Natural referring to the fact that they rely only on natural abilities (eg: claws) rather than supernatural (eg: breathing fire). Obviously they learn supernatural techniques but...they're Pokemon; they're supernatural by definition.

They already have enough types. Why do they need another one? I, personally, thought they were pushing it when they added types like Dark and Steel. But, they were cool because they were new. But, adding a new one now would really be pushing it.

Besides, I don't think they mean normal as in "they're normal animal type things"... I think they mean normal as in "they're not fire breathing, thunder shooting, water spitting monsters". Though, a select few can learn such attacks- generally, they're not in their original moveset and are learned through HM or TM. They don't fit in with the elements- so, they're normal.

The normal type is pretty much where they throw in all of the Pokémons that doesn't fit into any other type... Most of them would class into ABnormal rather :/

Since when can Psychic type moves even hit Dark type pokemon. I think you mean Psychic-Ghost
Since when did Psychic become super effective against Ghost?

Anyway, I think normal should be split with the ??? type. It would give it a use and some pokemon could still be normal like Ambipom.

Its been done before, changing a Pokemons type but Im sure they could atleast add the type. Also, I see Virtual being weak against a Virus type. Virtual Vs. Virus

Anyway, i think the oddball normal types should be changed to ???
