It's an egg. Eggs come from only the female, so why do you need the male?
For fertilization, duh.

Probably because even if Diglett is a tiny ground-type, it's just not as funny as imagining a male pink Pokémon like Skitty on a huge female Wailord. *shrug*
That's true, I just thought that Diglett would be more popular considering we never see it come out of the ground.

As mentioned, Pokemon do not sexually reproduce. According to the game and show, Celebi appears whenever two "compatible" Pokemon are together and leaves them an egg to take care of. Assume the eggs are/were spontaneously generated by Arceus/Mew.

This is the answer people.
Actually, looking at the 'dex entries for Celebi, it says it brings an egg -- only when it appears deep in a forest. It never actually specifies that this is how breeding works in general, and even then, the egg would have had to come from somewhere. I'm not sure where in the anime it states that Celebi's essentially the stork, either. The fourth movie didn't establish this as far as I know, and I don't recall it being mentioned in an episode.

So, yeah, sorry, but it's actually not established that it works this way.

Edit: For further analysis, the 'dex entry that mentions eggs, as pulled from Silver:

When Celebi disappears deep in a forest, it is said to leave behind an egg from the future.

If anything, it actually implies that the egg was taken from a nest in the future, not that it was magically bestowed upon two compatible pokémon by a legendary. Even then, given the fact that Celebi's a rare sighting in the games, it's more implied that this is a rare occasion. Any other explanation that the games offer as to how the egg came to be is that it simply "appeared" and that the caretakers "don't know how the player's pokémon got it."

Screw that crud with Celebi. That is just something they put in there to make it "kid friendly." All of us here know how it really goes down. XD

Leaves them an egg.. pssht. I really doubt that was Nintendo's big plan for breeding. And since when do people take stuff from the show seriously?

And what game did you hear that from? I am curious. If it is Gen 3 then it is possible it says that but any other gen and you are lying. =]

*Points up.* I like this person. I agree. Which is why I say poor diglett... Oh well, some like them big! LOL

Seriously though, the breeding is weird, but it does make some cool movesets. I have a Lv. 100 Adamant Muk that knows Focus Punch, Shadow Sneak, Poison Jab, and Substitute. It works really well!

So what you're saying is that you're going to ignore a concept that the game designers intentionally placed in the game to answer a question about Pokemon reproduction... and then bring up fallacies regarding Pokemon reproduction.

Just because you don't like an answer doesn't mean it's invalid.

Yup, Wailord + Diglett = Egg

When Gold & Silver was first introduce, you will run into Day Care Center before you can head to Goldenrod. One of the day care people would say, "we have no idea where the eggs come from." lol, have anyone ever told them about sexual education before? omg, those were some good days.

Yes we all know that the Pokemon world do not sexual reproduce. wtf? lol.

You'll see this a lot: random people in the games like to remind you that no one has ever seen Pokemon breeding or laying eggs (e.g., that one girl in Solacea Town). As far as the Day Care people are concerned, that quote should be enough to illustrate that there most likely isn't any sex involved. I would like to think that at least one of them keeps an eye on the Pokemon they're in charge of, and would thus notice any sexual activity. If the Pokemon are just friendly, and all of a sudden an egg appears between them, I'd probably say "I don't know where that egg came from".

I think the problem here is that y'all are trying to relate Pokemon to IRL animals... which is a big mistake. Do you think real-world rules apply to a universe that was created by a freaking goat?

Yeah, when you are playing games, they will tell you about hints. Just like the library from the Sinnoh region.

Don't get me wrong. I like games that are different from real life as well. Games like Gears of War and Call of Duty does show realistic themes to our nature. But to be honest, I lose interest to games that are realistic in our nature. To me, it just shows repetition, so I play them in rare occaions. I love fantasy games the best. You got a good point that Pokemon doen't always have to link in real life. I just think it is humorous that what they did with Pokemon about the breeding idea with Celebi. Because of that, it me felt entertain. By the way, I prefer Arceus as a raindeer then a freaking goat.

That is exactly what I am saying. I know how it went down. So does everyone else. :)

Celebi floats magically and gives them an egg. Lol. Millions of people breed Pokemon all over the world at the same time. Celebi cannot be everywhere at once, legendary or not.

WEAK! Wouldn't that then demote Celebi from legendary status? Legendary Pokemon are one of a kind, meaning Celebi is not a legendary.

But really. Nintendo isn't in charge of the movies. They let some crap production company take over it and Nintendo has no control over it whatsoever. They could start calling Pikachu (Pee-kah-choo) Pikeachu (Pyke-a-choo) if they wanted to. So I do not believe anything put into the movies.

Which brings me back to my original point that Celebi cannot be everywhere at once and therefore, Pokemon do indeed, sexually reproduce.

Or maybe Pokemon asexually reproduce. Maybe they get SO excited when they are near a Pokemon that they get along with and pop an egg out of their anal hole. =]

No, not at all, there are many multiple legendary Pokemon. Just because a certain species of Pokemon is legendary doesn't mean it has to be only one.

Aww, not even about Lucario?

Just think of Dialga & Palkia uses there "special abilities," to control time and space.

I am going to pretend that I didn't here your fourth paragraph. '~'

Well...yeah, of course that's weird...xD

Well, you know, some animals IRL don't physically reproduce, that might be the case for Pokemon.
Like...Salmon...the females lay eggs, all the males have to do is fertilize them.
And some male animals leave a...(I'm not sure what to call this, because it might not be appropiate...) and the female picks it up later on.

This is becoming a very...awkward...reproduction thread...^^;

Exactly what I said. Asexually reproduction.

I think, all in all, that sexual reproduction makes the most sense and that Nintendo just wanted it to be kid friendly.

First, you guys don't seem to know how time travel works. In fact, I don't even know how it works, so it's kind of hard for you to use time travel as a excuse.

Secondly, there are some really gross people here. Doesn't Diglett and Wailord being able to breed prove that it can't be through intercourse?
I mean, that would be physically impossible wouldn't it? In fact a lot of Pokemon breeding is physically impossible.

I always imagined that when two Pokemon really love each other a bright glow is created between them and that turns into a egg. Considering that they use bright glows for everything else, don't you think they would use that here as well?

I briefly considered showing this thread how the Harry Potter fandom believe the character Hagrid (whose father was a normal man and whose mother was an actual giantess) was born, but I'm pretty sure none of you really want to know.

That being said, the point I was trying to make earlier is that there's numbers of ways that an egg can be created, but the problem is that the development team (the games' writers included) never actually specified how it goes down -- and they certainly didn't simply say "oh, Celebi places these eggs in this day care." (*motions to the entry she mentioned in an earlier post*) Of course, they didn't specifically say that's not how it goes down either. (I just personally believe it to be unlikely. I've already mentioned why.) The only clues we have are that a couple of old people looked at a kid who they presumed has no concepts of sexual intercourse (being ten and all) and said "we don't know how it got here." This also doesn't rule out the possibility that pokémon do do it like the Discovery Channel because it's implied that the couple aren't actually watching the pokémon as they wander off into the bushes to make said egg. (Note that the one who hands you the egg said they just happened to find it near one of the player's pokémon. They never say they watched it be created.)

Long story short, I really don't think there's a right or wrong answer. Some people can think of pokémon biology = real-life biology. Others can have a sparkly light show if they want to interpret it that way.

But in any case, isn't the whole point of this thread to point out that it's amusing to imagine Wailord and Diglett mating? You might consider it gross, but the idea was really there from page one, and anyway, given that you've been pointing it out yourself, I'm assuming you found the mental image amusing to begin with. (Because there's nothing really funny about a wailord and a diglett just glowing and making an egg by magic.)
