Battle at the Lake
A One-Shot by Redwire

Chapter One

The suns rays bounced off the crystal clear water of Portage Lake. I smiled into the wind. What a perfect day for a battle. A sudden door slam caused me to turn and grin evilly as my cousin Dakota stepped out of the house onto the back porch, a root beer in his hand.

“Hey Jess!” he called, his three red and white Poke Balls clinking together on his belt as he walked towards me. He stopped short, and gave a peculiar look. “I’ve known you my whole life, and I would know that look anywhere
,” he grinned, and unclipped a Poke Ball from his belt. “Three on three?” he questioned.

“I thought you’d never ask!” I shouted as in a fluid movement, I unclipped one of the four balls on my belt and tossed one into the air over the lake. Mid-air, the ball snapped open and a flash of white light exploded from the ball. A large splash told me that my Pokemon was ready to go. The magnetized ball flew back into my gloved hand, and I faced Dakota. “Betcha can’t guess who my first choice is, hmm?” I laughed. We faced the water, no sign of my battle partner to give himself away.

“I thought that you’d learn that after a while, I get your battle style.” Dakota sneered as he dropped a Poke Ball an arms length away. Once again, the ball snapped open, a white flash covered his choice.

“Blassstoise!” A giant blue turtle with two cannons on either shoulder stood on the lawn where the light had flashed moments ago.

“Blastoise huh? Good to see that Ramsey finally evolved.” The sheer size of the water turtle was enough to make most people think twice about battling one, but me and good ol’ Blue had this one covered.

“You betcha! Ramsey, go! Into the lake!”

“Blass!” responded the turtle, as in two quick steps it leaped into the water. A giant splash of water rocketed out of the lake where the turtle landed, soaking everything in a 30 foot radius, including me and Dakota. I laughed as I ran to the end of the dock, in order to get a better view.

“Blue, come on out!! Let’s show these boys how Champions battle!” Bubbles rose from the middle of the large lake as my Pokemon rushed towards the surface. Seconds later, the surface of Portage broke, and my Pokemon shot into the air.

“Draa..” my Dragonair hummed. His long snake like body twisted majestically in the air, a perfect representation of the Dragon type. “Good ol’ Blue.” I mumbled to myself. “Go! Start with Aqua Tail!”

“Draaa!!” Blue’s eyes narrowed as he flipped mid air and slammed his tail into the lake, sending a tidal wave towards Ramsey.

“Ramsey, Dive!” Dakota commanded. The Blastoise dove under the water, the Aqua Tail attack passing harmlessly across where he had floated, and receded back into the waves. By this time, Dakota had ran to the neighbors dock, and was in the same position I was in. Hearing all the commotion, we had also gathered a audience. Among them was our family, quite a big bunch. Turning my attention back to the battle field, I gave my next command.

“Blue, Wrap attack!” A minute later, Blue shot twenty feet into the air, holding a captive Ramsey in his tail. The Blastoise withered and resisted against the hold, but Blue was strong, and he hardly even flinched. “Let’s finish this, use Seismic Toss!”

“Draaagonaiiiirrrr!!!” Blue screeched as he flew straight up, hundreds of feet into the air, and suddenly flipped, facing down, and threw the defenseless Ramsey down towards the lake. The large turtles body hit the lake surface with a SMACK!!, sending a spray of lake water into the air, blinding our view.

Chapter Two

“Ramsey!!! Talk to me buddy, tell me your ok!!” Dakota shouted frantically, not wanting to lose our first match. When the spray cleared, Ramsey was laying face down in the water, knocked out. A cheer rose up from the small audience, and my father stepped forward to play ref.

“Ramsey is no longer able to battle. Jessie and Blue win round one!” I grinned, and called Blue over to the dock. Dakota returned Ramsey to his Poke Ball, and had another one in his hand before I was done thanking Blue for a awesome match.

“Alright, I see how it is. Think you're so tough?” Dakota yelled at me from the other dock. I pulled another Poke Ball off my belt, and sneered in his direction.

“You know I think I am! Do something about it Rocky!” I taunted, using Dakota’s nickname. He growled, and tossed another ball into the air, towards the house. We both ran back to the yard as his ball released his next choice.

“Do something about this then!!” Dakota called as his Poke Ball snapped open. When the flash cleared, a large human like Pokemon stood on the dock next to Dakota. It was blue in color, with veins threatening to popping out of it’s skin. It wore a black belt, with what looked like a black Speedo to go with it.

“Machoke!” The large Pokemon flexed it’s arms, and banged on its chest.

“I will! Go, Thornstar!” A Great Dane sized dog appeared at my side. Its black fur glistened in the sunlight. The two horns on its head curved wickedly backwards, showing Alpha status.

“Houndoom!” Thornstar barked. He shot a pilliar of flames straight up, earning a couple of “Ooh”s and “Ahh”s from the house. My dad once again stepped forward.

“Dakota’s Machoke against Jessie’s Thornstar. Let the match begin!”

Simultaneously, Dakota and I shouted “Go!” to our Pokemon, starting the battle. I knew I had to be careful of the lake, as Thornstar was a Fire type. If Machoke somehow go a hold of him and got him in the lake… My thoughts were interrupted by a cry of pain from Thornstar. Machoke had landed a Mach Punch head on, throwing the Houndoom into a tree nearby.

“Thornstar go! Crunch attack!!” Thornstar barked, and launched himself towards Machoke. He clamped onto Machoke’s arm, earning a cry of shock and pain from the muscle Pokemon.

“Machoke, use Mach Pu-“

“Thornstar now use Thunder Fang!” I shouted above Dakota, cutting his command short. Electricity shot from Thornstar’s mouth, electrocuting Machoke.

“Maaaccccchhookee!!!” He cried in pain, hitting Thornstar with a Dizzy Punch in return. The Dizzy Punch launched Thornstar towards the lake, and he landed with a splash.

“Thornstar, no!!” I cried, rushing to the end of the dock. Thornstar whimpered as he pulled himself out of the water, and fainted on the dock.

“Thornstar is unable to battle, Dakota and Machoke win round two!” I quickly returned Thornstar to his Poke Ball, telling him to rest good. I faced Dakota, my hand on my last Poke Ball. It was a faded red and white, obviously older than the other three Pokeballs that adorned my belt. A long deep slash ran from the center button to the back, where the white and red connected. I smiled, and hit the release button. Dakota was still celebrating his round two victory with his family as I released my last choice.

Chapter Three

Another flash and my final Pokemon flew out of his Poke Ball. He landed with a THUD that shook the ground, returning Dakota’s attention to the battle. A large black dragon stood on the lawn, his black and red wings unfolded, making him look twice as large. He glowered at Machoke, who Dakota had forgotten to return. The human Pokemon screeched in fear, and a red light enveloped him as he was returned.

“So this is your final choice?” Dakota said looking straight at my Shiny Charizard. I nodded. Benvolio had been my first Pokemon, and I had full faith in him to win this battle for me. Dakota nodded. “Then I guess I have no choice do I?” He threw a blue and white Poke Ball into the air, specially made for him by his birth father for his starter. Another THUD and his orange dragon was released. Eragon, named after one of Dakota’s favorite books, stood menacingly across from Benvolio. I remembered the day that we both got our first Pokemon.

It had been a warm summers day, similar today. Dakota and I, both ten, had flown to the famous Professor Willow’s lab in Northern Michigan. Our dad’s waited outside patiently as we stepped into the large building. I walked up to the desk in the middle of the room, Dakota trailing behind me. The large lobby was covered with Pokemon pictures, book shelves lined the walls, stuffed full of Pokemon books.

“Excuse me, miss?” I asked the lady at the desk. She smiled kindly at me and pointed me to the door on her right.

“You must be Jessie and Dakota, here for your PokeDex’s and starters. Go through that door there, and Professor Willow will see you shortly.” I thanked her, and walked into the room. There were six chairs lined up against the wall, across from a table that had six Poke Balls and six PokeDex’s. Behind that was a basket ball court sized battle field. There were four other kids sitting in the chairs when Dakota and I arrived, so we took the last two. A man in his late forties stepped into the room through the door Dakota and I had just come from. He had long black hair, which was tied into a ponytail, and a black goatee. His long white lab coat was accompanied by black pants and a white polo. He looked very professional.

“Hello kids. I’m Professor Willow, and I’ll be giving you’re your first Pokemon today. Now, can you all step over here so I can take your pictures for your Trainers License…” After taking our pictures and giving us our new License, and telling us about how to take care of our Pokemon, Prof. Willow walked us towards the table with the Poke Balls.

“Now, I’ll be giving you each your own Pokemon. I’ve already decided who gets what, so no trading. These Pokemon fit you perfectly. First up was a small boy in green shorts and a blue t-shirt. He jumped up and down with excitement as Prof. Willow handed him his first Pokemon.

“Go!” The boy shouted, releasing a Chikorita. He squealed with joy, thanking Prof. Willow, and running out of the lab with his Poke Dex. Three kids, and three Pokemon later, it was Dakota’s turn.

“I think that you’ll like this one very much.” Prof. Willow said smiling. Dakota wordlessly hit the release button, and a flash of light revealed a small orange lizard, with a fire at the end of its tail.

“Charr?” It questioned. It looked at Dakota, as if to say “Are you my trainer?” Dakota hesitantly reached his hand out, and the Charmander put it’s head into his hand.

“Eragon.” Dakota smiled and took his Charmander outside. I was the last person in the room and Prof. Willow took my Poke Ball and Pokedex off the table.

“This is a very special Pokemon, and I want you to take extra special care of it for me, ok?” Prof. Willow asked me. I nodded, and took the ball and Pokedex from him. I walked out of the room, wanting to see my Pokemon for the first time in the light outside. I stepped out of the building and Dakota was showing Eragon the Charmander to our dads.

“Jessie! What Pokemon did you get?” Dakota asked. Our dads looked my way, curious as to what creature laid in wait in the ball.

“Go!” I shouted, and threw the ball into the air. A white flash of light revealed a Pokemon similar to Dakota’s. It was a Charmander, but something was different…

“He’s gold!” Dakota shouted. And indeed, he was. I walked up to the creature who reached about chest height to my ten year old body. “What are you gunna call him?” Dakota asked from over my shoulder. I looked into the Charmander’s intelligent eyes, and put my hand on his head.

“Benvolio.”

Chapter Four

“Benvolio, go! Use Flamethrower!” I shouted. He sprung into the air, and shot a jet of flames towards Eragon. Eragon flew into the air as well, and the flames missed him. It was now a battle of the skies.

“Eragon, use Slash!” Dakota shouted. His Charizard drew its claws back and slashed towards Benvolio. Benni dodged, and shot another jet of flames towards Eragon’s exposed back, hitting him dead on. “Er, go! Shadow Claw!” Eragon’s claws glowed with a eerie purple, and he slashed again towards Benvolio. Benvolio flipped and caught Eragon’s claw in his own, and threw him back, sending him off balance.

“Benni, use Iron Tail! Send him into the ground!” Benvolio roared, and flew at Eragon. His tail turned silver, glinting in the sun light, as he smashed it into Eragon’s back. The blow sent Eragon plummeting to the ground and he hit with a OOMPH . Benvolio landed, and we waited for the dust to clear.
All of a sudden, a jet of flames came out of the dust screen, and hit Benvolio dead on. “Benni, Fly!” I countered. He sprung into the air, escaping the hot flames. Ergaon stood, greatly weakened. Benvolio wasn’t doing much better. We were both evenly matched. “Finish this! Air Slash!” Benvolio dropped like a speeding bullet, aimed straight towards Eragon.

“Counter with Flamethrower!” Dakota yelled. Just as Benvolio hit, Eragon released a stream of fire, creating an explosion of forces. I was knocked back, and struggled to my feet and the dust cleared. Both Eragon and Benvolio were standing, but just barely. Suddenly, Eragon snorted, and fell to the ground.

“Eragon is unable to battle, Jessie and Benvolio win round three. Jessie is victorious!” I shouted in victory, and ran up to Benvolio. I hugged him, as he struggled to stand.

“Thanks Benni, awesome battle. You deserve the rest.” I returned him to his Poke Ball, and turned to face Dakota. “Good match Dakota, you had me worried there.”

“Yea well, next time you won’t be so lucky! Me and Eragon are gunna train up some more.” I nodded and stuck my hand out. Dakota took it, and we shook, a pact to keep fighting, to keep getting stronger, until next time.

You know I love this. I love you you write your battles out; so intense and descriptive, and the way you give each pokémon his or her own character is great, too. I'm intrigued to see what else you've got up your sleeve!
