It's been, um... two years since I've written Pokémon fanfiction and posted here, so, yeah, hi. For those who've read my previous one-shots, nothing's changed. It's angsty and it's short. 8D

Inspired by my lovely friend Grovyle42 and the latest chapter of his fanfiction~

Save Us

Being a Pokémon that belongs to the first gym leader in the Sinnoh region is sickening, and he knows that better than anyone else.

At first, he was weak and vulnerable and so very scared, and was only made more miserable by the gym leader's words that were meant to be reassuring, yet came out as meaningless. He was somewhat glad he was given a chance, but it didn't matter much because he was too tied down by the expectations given to him. He had to listen. He had to do everything right. He had to fight and pretend like he'd done it a million times before. He had to swallow the fear and the desire to flee.

He had to win. There were no exceptions.

Hush, now, and don't say a word--

"Why am I the one who has to fight the most, Roark?"

"Because most trainers are new, Geodude, and it wouldn't be fair if I used a really, really strong Pokémon they had no chance against, right?"

--and now it's out in the open, but there is always, always more to say.

He became more powerful with each and every battle. Roark could see it. All the Pokémon, both new and old, could see it. Anyone who was anyone could see it.

He could crush any trainer who came to challenge them with too much confidence, helping them grow as well. He could always bring a smile to his face, and the gym leader's face--a real, genuine, victorious smile. Intimidation came easy to him, and it thrilled him when the insecurity showed on his opponent's expressions. New attacks were learned, and every time a trainer returned, there was a new surprise in store for them.

And then he evolved, and suddenly, he was forgotten, thrown away.

Speak, now, because you must have a secret kept down--

"What's going to happen now? Why is this even happening at all? You need me, and you know it."

"Someone else will have to fight now. We have to at least give trainers a chance."

--and now it's out in the open, and nothing is changing at all.

He wonders what's going on, because this shouldn't be happening, not at all.

Suddenly, he's stuck with other Pokémon that he didn't even know existed. He doesn't know their fighting abilities, and he doesn't know their individual stories, but he can guess, sadly, and he knows he'd be right about every single one of them. And, now, suddenly, he's experiencing the same as everyone else. Roark's commands for another innocent creature rings through his ears, and there's an echo on the wind, telling him it's over, it's all over, and it's so very sorry, but not really.

He's no longer someone who has it all. He's only someone who has memories to hold on to, and he's terrified.

Give it all the time you need, and let it out--

"Can't you see us at all? Isn't being a gym leader all about team work? And working in the mines is the same way. You need us to reach your goal. We're not invisible. We won't ever let ourselves become invisible, as much as you want us to. You're the only one who can save us, so if you ever really cared, you'd do it."

"I'm just trying to do my job, and I need you to understand that."

--and hope there are better days in the future.

He's come so far, only to have it all disposed of--and, well, he's not sure what to do with his life anymore.

He's not the only one, and he knows now that misery loves its company. Everyone else says they all can only hope for the new fighter that, maybe, he just won't become stronger, won't become as successful as they did and then, maybe, someone can be content with the way everything turns out to be. And he? He's spending his days sitting on the sidelines because there's no other choice, desperately waiting for a change in pace, a chance for him to prove to Roark that he made a stupid, pathetic mistake.

Because he's just another one of them, and he doesn't want to be.
