D I L E T T A N T E
by JAP
There was never a day without my thinking of you.
A young lad slowly stroked the viridian grass with his thin fingers, as his jade eyes watched the simply blue sky. His spiky brown hair was blown by the gentle breeze. He was waiting, waiting for someone he wished to hold tight. Someone who replaced the existence of oxygen in his world—he couldn’t live without
her.
It’s been years ever since we first met.
It's been years since I had this dilettante.
He and the brave Red, rivals from childhood, texted the very girl yesterday. Both of them were asking for her to come at the same time, same place, but different spot. There they waited, waited for the girl in the place where she was born—the Viridian Forest.
The lad didn’t have any expectation for the girl to feel the same way. If she did come, it’s already more than enough for him. From the very beginning, he knew that he had no chance. The lady’s citrine eyes were only aimed at his rival, for her heart cherished him dearly. The truth was always bitter, but what could he do? All he wished is for her to be happy.
Her happiness is his solitude.
Suddenly his face was covered by a shadow. Surprised, the lad quickly sat up. He turned his head, only to face the air he needed to breathe, the girl he wanted to embrace, the heart he wanted to bond his with.
She simply smiled at him.
“Well, fancy seeing you here, Green,” she cheerfully greeted, “What are you doing here? Daydreaming?”
‘Thinking of you’ was the first sentence that crossed his mind, but instead of saying that out loud, “Short nap,” was his answer. The girl chuckled. Green’s heart beat faster, and it felt as if his stomach was being punched by Hitmonchan. Did she really, really choose him over Red? Was this all a dream?
“So… What brings you here?” he asked.
“Oh! Well…” the lady’s cheeks were colored by blush, “Since you’re here… Have you seen Red?”
The question brushed all of his thoughts away.
“He texted me yesterday, and asked me to come here, but I didn’t see him so far,” the girl sighed, “Maybe I was expecting too much from him. I was so happy that I didn’t even read the rest of the new messages in my inbox.”
She probably didn’t know that Green texted her as well.
“So… You didn’t read my message?”
The blonde was surprised. “No, probably not,” she shook her head, “I’m sorry. It’s just… Well, you understand what I mean, right? It was the first time Red ever wanted to talk privately with me. Is there anything important?”
“No, not really, Yellow,” Green murmured in pain, “Except the fact that I was going to confess to you.”
Silence filled the atmosphere between the two of them. Yellow was completely speechless. She never expected something like this to happen. The cool-headed, hard-to-reach Green…
“I love you.”
Sadness filled Yellow’s eyes. “I’m sorry, Green… I…” she bit her lips, “…I can’t.”
“I know,” Green stared at the grass under his feet, for he disliked seeing her sad face, “He’s waiting in the center. Go.”
Yellow hesitated. She kept staring on Green, whose eyes still locked with the grassy field.
“Don’t keep him waiting,” the lad slightly pushed his tone. Yellow slowly turned back, then she ran into the woods.
As the brown haired lad walked back home, the sun set. His heart was colored the same as the gloomy crimson sky. Even though he already accepted the truth, the ache was still lingering in him. Just for that once, he wished that he was someone else, he wished that he was Red.
I was the first to be captivated by your beauty, aren’t I?
He didn’t even know who you really are when he saw you for the second time.
My heart was rushing when I first saw you, and my eyes could see well the silky hair under your straw hat.
Your face, to me, is a form of art. A divine one.
And this feeling… This feeling is dilettante.
I believed that I was the one for you, and I kept on wondering why you couldn’t see me.
Perhaps… Because I never showed myself?
Or was it because he was covering me with his shadow?
Oddly, he smiled.
It’s not your fault that I love you, so... please...
Let me forget this dilettante.
