I'll summarise this tragic disaster for you.

A Liverpool game, some sort of Semi - Final or something. Fans turned up in dozens. Now, back in those days they had terraces for people to stand on, in several gates / areas. The terraces had a metal fence going straight around the pitch to avoid people getting onto the pitch. There were Stewards to evenly distribute the massing fans, so as not to cause a "crush". There were also Police to make sure there was no fighting in the crowds.

This sounds very organised, but not at this particular game. For some reason the Stewards weren't at their posts, so many fans just followed the long stream of fans into one of the gates. By now it was pretty full, this particular gate. And eventually it became so full that people at the front started to faint or suffocate. They were crushed up against the metal fence, running out of air.

The fans still went into this gate, and a few minutes after Kick - Off the Goalkeeper of one of the sides was asked for help by a fan slowly losing their breath. The GoalKeeper alerted the referee, and the game was stopped. But due to lack of communication, the Police thought a riot was happening so tried to keep them IN the crushed space.

42 Ambulances were called, but Police stopped them from coming on, as they said, "There's a fight going on". Only one Ambulance got to go onto the pitch, and well, that was that really. One man and an Ambulance couldn't help 96 dying fans. By now people had got onto the pitch, but people where still getting crushed and were suffocating.

96 people died in this tragic event, which shook the ways of football forever. Terraces are no longer used and all stadiums in the top 2 divisions (except for Cardiff) must have an all - seater stadium.

Sorry for the long block of text. The 15th of April, 1989, should be remembered forever. The event that shook football history.

As for a fire, no, i wouldn't think so. The Police would've opened the gates, allowing fans onto the pitch if such an event occured. It was merely the misunderstanding by the Police to not open the gates, preventing death.

This date could also refer to the Boston Tea parties going on around America in protest of Obama's policies. Of course, dumping tea into a river would be environmentally unfriendly, so they pour lake water from buckets labeled "tea" instead.

Or tax day.

And to think I actually thought this would be about the Titanic...
That event shows how Britain is full of football hooligans, But, yeah... R.I.P
It wasent Hooligans, the away fans (Liverpool) only was allowed in through one part of the stadium, and there was one tunnel to go through (allthough there was other sections to go in but nobody went that way) it was just the turnstill and Big tunnel straight ahead, one section was full and they should have closed the tunnel so the other fans could go to the other section but the police never did that, but they did open the huge gate because there was so many fans trying to go through 2 turnstill so when the gate open everybody went through and just headed to the tunnel where it was allready full. And the Police had cameras and all so they should have done somthing sooner but they didnt. So thats what caused so many people geting in at one time. And Huge fences by the pitch was bad enough because if you were right there you could get crushed or even if you lose your foot in anywhere and you go down you would never get back up.
Britain's police are always majorly incompetent, they should be able to tell the difference between a crowd and a riot.
There was no riot, but yes the police should have closed the damn gates.

Well considering they managed to shoot a guy 6 times in the head mistaking him for a terrorist that he didnt even look like, I'd have to agree with this statement.

This tragedy should of never being allowed to happen, poor souls.

RIP the 96. A sad event in football, really, and something that shouldn't have happened in the first place. The stadium was old, and the police reportedly made a complete meal of it. (There's still a lot of bad feeling about that particular part - at the memorial service at one point they chanted 'Justice for the 96').

Had anyone actully seen the memorial cermony? They say 28,000 people turned up to the stadium (where it happened), and public transport also stopped for it as well. Kinda moving, have to say... and not at all surprised they sung 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at the end of it either.

People started chanting "Justice for the 96" when that Politician just walks on and says something that EVERYONE knows which means there's no point on him coming on. It was something like, "We are here today to commemerate the death of 96 people in a tragic accident". He wasn't even invited along to the darn thing! That's why people started chanting what they chanted, because this guy had just put himself in the spotlight. Or something.

If it weren't for the Goalkeeper of one of the teams, the Referee wouldn't've stopped the game to try and stop what was going in the gates. If the Goalkeeper had just turned away, the death toll would've reached over 100.

It was complete incompetence of Officials and Police that too many people got into one gate, which caused the deaths of many men, woman and children. The Police said that there was a fight going on, meaning only one Ambulance was allowed through. There was no fighting.. there were no riots.. there was just death.

My dad said as well there might have been a fire at the back somewhere to make everyone fall off
I think you may be confusing the Hillsborough disaster with the Valley Parade fire.

Britain's police are always majorly incompetent, they should be able to tell the difference between a crowd and a riot.
You tell that to the police men and women who helped during the 7/7 bombings. They make mistakes, they are human, just the same as every other police force in the world.

Well considering they managed to shoot a guy 6 times in the head mistaking him for a terrorist that he didnt even look like, I'd have to agree with this statement.
He ran from the police when the country was on high alert. The police did what they thought was right at the time - consider what could have happened if he was a bomber and they hadn't acted.

(Sorry for arguing on those points, but I'm training to work for/with the police, and people judge without considering the situations).

ANYWAY. I'm glad to see this thread, NeoQueen. I was too young to remember it, but it's important that the world remembers Hillsborough and all the people who died there. RIP indeed.

Very sad day, my uncle told me about that, and how he stopped going to matches after Hillsborough. I read somewhere that part of the problem was that the stadium was packed beyond capacity, which served as part of the reason for all the suffocations.
