What Is The Day Of Silence?
The Day of Silence is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take some form of a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. The event is designed to illustrate the silencing effect of this bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT

If you have negative opinions on this, please refrain from posting them and if you really feel the need to express your negative opinions, do so in private. PM me.

The day of silence is April 17th [today] every year. Who else is participating. If you haven't heard of it until now, will you participate next year?

I'm attempting at it, but my problem is that when someone talks to me I feel rude if I don't talk to them. I have no school today so I'm lucky I guess that I don't have to worry about that. I'll try to remain silent, I normally am anyways.

When it ended, you cried instead of make anew
Was there a reason for forgetting everything...?
T o m o r r o w descends from the sky like a feather,
waking you up like an agonizing i l l u s i o n

I always thought this day was a bit silly.
Really, I wonder what shutting up really /does/ for anyone.

No, I don't do it, but everyone else in my school does.

It's a form of protest. The reasoning behind it was given in the first post.

The idea is that, the world is silent when it comes to anti-LGBT behavior (bullying, etc), so for one day, people will be silent for everything; showing others how that impacts everyone's life. But, I'm horrid at explaining it, so here's the link to the official site.

And everyone waits until the day it is to remind me it is coming. I'm so horrid at remembering dates.

If we're both still on PC next year, I shall remind you early if you would like.

There was already a thread for this, and I believe it was locked.

Anyway, I think being silent to protest people not speaking up is counter-productive. Haven't you seen those gay pride parades? They're declaring they're queer and they're here, and that they're gay and you should get used to it. Why don't you guys do something like that?

I am fully aware of the goal and message.
I just feel that it's a bit ineffectual.

I can't help but think that being silent for the whole day in hope to stop bullying would just make you more of a target.

I for one would think you were a bit of a muppet.

It's a form of protest.
But no one takes anything from it, it's probably the most inefficient, waste-of-time way to protest anything. In fact, most people would just laugh at how stupid the idea sounds. How does anyone intend to get a message across when they can't be taken seriously?

Well Gay Pride Parade is more of a celebration expressing the fact that there is nothing wrong with being gay and we're proud of our orientation, hence "Gay Pride". But day of silence is in loving memory for people like Matthew Shepard, Bobby Griffith, and all other gay teens who have either face discrimination or who have to hide there true identities for fear of being socially persecuted, harrassed, etc.
What does LGBT mean?

I've never heard of this until now. :O
LGBT stands for Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender.

I don't take part because I don't go to school and because I always forget XD
But I may do it next year.

Meh, I don't believe this day of silence does anything but make those who dislike homosexuals even more irritated. Those who do the day of silence more than likely draw more attention to themselves than any other day. This one guy handed out pamphlets last year. While I have nothing against homosexuals, his attitude on that day bothered me ~_~; I don't take it seriously. There's more out there you can do that be silent for a day. It only brings on more bullying.

This day was being covered on ABC World News tonight. It was related to the story about that 11-year-old kid who committed suicide because people were bullying him about being gay and stuff. It happened about 2 weeks ago.

This hits home to me. The kid lived in Springfield, MA. I live about 25 miles north from there.

Perhaps it's just my take on the way you phrased it; but if I was the recipient of such bullying, I'd consider the manner the event is carried out to be... insulting in some way — patronising?

Still, as Gymnotide said, I don't see it doing anything — bullies and the like will have already suppressed their conscience anyway, that is even assuming they have one anyway.

I'm aware this is a negative comment, but if there were no negative points there would be no promotion of discussion, good day sir.

Ehh, I always forget to. I dunno if I'll end up doing it, as it seems sort of silly, but I respect the people who do it and respect the message. Of course, literally half my school does it because 1. My school only has 450 kids in it and 2. Because I go to a raging liberal hippie-dippy school. It's called Community High School for god sakes. At our school, it's called LGBTQQA. Heh, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Questioning and Allied. It's a bit too long to roll of the tongue, eh?

Well, maybe this days for everyone. A day for anyone who feels afraid, ashamed, scared, depressed, or whatever. Though the event was created mainly for the LGBT cause.

My school is always on spring break whenever Day of Silence rolls around, so we've made our own little one after break, and I will be participating in that. I have all 4 years of high school.

Whattttt?
This was yesterday? D:
I have participated in this every year since my Freshmen year, so basically twice.
I like this, it gives me satisfaction in knowing I'm helping a good cause.
I would've totally been silent at work for a day, especially since I have to talk at work, I bag groceries, and you need to talk to customers to milk them for money (as bad as it sounds. >.>)
