Hey all! This is usually the point where I'm supposed to write an opening talking about how I came up with this spectacular earth-shattering idea for a new fan-fiction... But I've got nothing, so I'll just ask a few questions and get all of your expert opinions on a few things that I need before I can finish working out my plot ;) (This isn't the plot, these are just a few things I need to get some help with before I can move forward with it.)

-The story takes place in olden times. No PokeBalls, electricity, automobiles etc. People lived in small towns where they farmed or ran stores and people coexisted peacefully, some of them befriending Pokemon and having them as pets or use them to help out on the farms.

-How intelligent are Dark/Ghost Pokemon? Which ones are the most intelligent and could possibly speak with a person either verbally or telepathically?

-Are there any good ways to capture Pokemon other than a PokeBall? eg. keep a Ponita in a pen, etc.

-Does silver have any affect on Ghost or Dark-Type Pokemon? Is there a way to repel Ghost/Dark Pokemon or a way that people might think keeps away said Pokemon?

-Would it be absolutely horrible to have a child who gains the ability to understand Poke-speak? I was thinking maybe do to some sort of relic or something to that effect... Maybe not ;)

-Is there a possibility that some Pokemon might want to resist the growing control of Pokemon under humans? Can you think of any ways they might go about this?

Thanks! Any help or comments are greatly appreciated :)

1. They're all intelligent beings, and I think Dusknoir would be a good pokemon to have a connection with the humans.

2. I can't think of a good idea haha.

3. Maybe use a certain coloured shard like what is found in the game to repel the pokemon?

4. I like that idea!

5. Perhaps the dusknoir I mentioned was captured as a duskull, and when it evolved it gained its telepathic skills and can communicate with other ghost pokemon from all around?

I've never wrote a pokemon story so I don't mind if you hate my ideas, but you never know :)

It's an interesting idea. Certainly one that hasn't been explored thoroughly yet. I say go for it.

-How intelligent are Dark/Ghost Pokemon? Which ones are the most intelligent and could possibly speak with a person either verbally or telepathically?
Depends on the continuum. As Drapion mentioned, they're all intelligent on a level, but in the anime, it seemed like every ghost had the same kind of likelihood to be able to communicate with humans. For example, there was a gastly in "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak" that could speak, but other gastly seemed to lack this ability. In another episode in the Orange Islands arc, a haunter telepathically used Meowth as a puppet to speak with Ash and company, while other haunter... yeah.

In other words, you could feasibly state that any ghost could potentially communicate that way with human beings, but not every one does it.

-Are there any good ways to capture Pokemon other than a PokeBall? eg. keep a Ponita in a pen, etc.
Side note to keep in mind, but according to a few versions of canon (anime and I think the games), the ancients used apricorn poké balls. It doesn't mention how far back those kinds of balls go, so if you're going for something that's even earlier than that, you could probably simply have humans taming pokémon the same way people keep real-life animals.

-Does silver have any affect on Ghost or Dark-Type Pokemon?
Nope. Nothing that's ever mentioned, at least. (Even then, silver's more of a piece of werewolf mythology, rather than general demon lore, isn't it?)

Is there a way to repel Ghost/Dark Pokemon or a way that people might think keeps away said Pokemon?
The anime seems to like using o-fuda (or, as the dub calls them, anti-spirit stickers) to repel evil spirits. Channelers in RBY seem to be carrying these as well, and given the nature of them (the fact that they're seen as symbols of holy power), it's fair to say some people would believe these would work.

In "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak," Misty also uses a cross, but that's not much of a sign of belief that it would work against evil spirits because she goes on to reveal she's mixing ghost lore up with vampire lore.

Daylight as well. Gastly in the same episode shies away from sunlight, and ghosts in the anime don't seem to appear outside when it's sunny.

-Would it be absolutely horrible to have a child who gains the ability to understand Poke-speak?
Depends on what you do with it. Small child with the ability that turns out to be incredibly creepy? Awesome. Even a little canon, thanks to the anime. Ten-year-old/teenager with it? Possibly heading towards Suedom.

-Is there a possibility that some Pokemon might want to resist the growing control of Pokemon under humans?
Absolutely.

Can you think of any ways they might go about this?
Probably individual resistance -- such as, it attacks any human that comes near it and continues to defy humans even when captured. If you mean an entire species, it's likely that they simply migrate to an area that's less populated (a la the clefairy line). Otherwise, it depends on the moods of the rest of its species/pokémon kind, I think.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I appreciate them :)

I was just referring to the gap that seems to be between several different kinds of Pokemon, for example Pikachu (who has the average intelligence of an Ash) in the Anime versus Meowth (who has the intelligence of one and a half Ashes).

the ancients used apricorn poké balls.
I never really understood what apricorn PokeBalls were ^.^'

(Even then, silver's more of a piece of werewolf mythology, rather than general demon lore, isn't it?)
Well, from what I've read in stories it's rather common with demons as well. I've read it in several books that have to do with demons... But maybe it is most commonly associated with werewolves ;)

Thanks again! You've really helped a lot :)

Basically, they're balls that were created from fruits that grew on special trees in Johto. No continuum actually went into detail as to how they actually worked, but apparently, some kind of property of the fruits themselves allowed them to be fashioned into what were essentially modern poké balls... only, um, made of wood. It really doesn't make sense on a scientific/realistic level, but if you think about them as magical relics, then they sort of fit.

(As a side note, magic seems to be the way ancient people contained pokémon. Or, at least, according to the anime. There was, for example, a race of people that lived in an ancient city called Pokémopolis, which was guarded by giant pokémon contained in special devices, like a golden spoon the size of any ordinary spoon for a giant alakazam.)

As a side note to the side note, I recall a scene in Movie 8 (Lucario) where Sir Aaron kinda contained Lucario in a cetre. The thing essentially "sucked" Lucario in just like a modern Poké Ball - except the Beam'O'Light was white, not red. That was, according to legend, "long time ago, before Poké Balls were invented".

So yeah. "Magic" of sorts. I would think that it is a property of certain materials that allowed for the containment of Pokémon, and that property was later studied and emulated to create Poké Balls en masse. Maybe the Apricorn Balls were dusted or imbed with a similar material, the apricorn essentially serving as the physical case, which served as the original idea. Maybe I am overthinking things again.

Adding to the OP's questions, yes, old-style taming may be the way to go when it comes to a number of Pokémon for humans to have some form of control over them, in particular if it is Ordinary Humans and not Aura users, psychics, Daughter of a Sue, or something like that.

But if you want to go to Ancient Times and have the idea of some Pokémon showing loyalty to humans as a group/settlement, or as a race, you can always work with the general idea established in the Sinnoh myth (an even more ancient pact of mutual service, for example). I don't really know if it could fit your story, however.

I've decided on a more specific time-period *cheers*, but now that leaves more questions...
It is about the 1800's (think Little House on the Prairie), but would they have in the way technologies, then? There's no electricity, so I doubt that they would have PokeBalls, but what do you think they would have?
