My fanfiction's main plot you can say is a war between the regions with Kanto and Jhoto being allys due to the fact that they are connected against Hoenn and Sinnoh who are also allied.
I am most likely going to incorporate real-life things in this story as well, mostly weapons and equipment. For example solders with XM8's and F-22A's. Now here is a list of some ideas, some of them I have thought of for a long time and some I made on the spot.

1) Prof.Birch is an armor developer for the Hoenn military and is a leads new technologies for the Military. When he learns of the impending invasion of Hoenn, He gives 3 of his 4 prototype armor suits to his son and two of his friends (Brendan/May/Wally) -This idea I have thought about alot and so I have alot of detail for this one, if you want more just ask-

2) All characters with strong bonds with their pokemon will be able to speak to each other (pokespeak I belive?) Is this a good idea?

3) The viewpoint of the story will change throughout with many characters, not just the characters in Hoenn. I will change between them and some of my own original characters and characters in Sinnoh (Lucas/Dawn/Barry)

For the sake of not making this super long, I did not add to much detail. If you think I should add more here than just say so or VM/PM me and I can describe alot of it in much more detail.

Due to geographical reasons, I find it hard to believe Hoenn and Sinnoh could be allied. They are on the opposite ends of "Japan" also in canon: Hoenn is a very warm region whereas Sinnoh is partially covered with snow most of the year. So, maybe Hoenn should be in alliance with Johto and Sinnoh with Kanto, as geographically that would make more sense. Also, the war would be easier, seeigh as Kanto and Johto are connected.

As for using modern weapons, that's really up to you. Personally I would try to go with Pokémon-powered equipment for added interest, but I guess guns do the trick too. You just have to think things carefully trough.

You know, I really can't imagine Prof. Birch as an armor developer. I mean, as a Pokémon researcher, he's essentially a biologist. Unless those armors are organic and based on Pokémon, I really don't see how Prof. Birch could be working on them.

Also, how old are his son and the other people? Are they in the army? Because if they are young or not a part of the army otherwise, giving the prototypes to them makes no sense. If they, however, are in the frontline of the Hoenn defense, then it makes sense. But obviously Prof. Birch should give the prototypes to the people that can be of the most use with them. Essentially, that would be the army's special troups or whoever are in the frontline of the defense.

2) All characters with strong bonds with their pokemon will be able to speak to each other (pokespeak I belive?) Is this a good idea?
Depends. If they can speak with clear English sentences, then it might be a tad sue-ish. If they can communicate, but not necessarily with English, then it sounds more plausible to me. Or, well, maybe they can have some kind of translator devices or something. I don't know. I only ever use Psychic type Pokémon as translators to allow my characters to communicate with their other Pokémon.

3) The viewpoint of the story will change throughout with many characters, not just the characters in Hoenn. I will change between them and some of my own original characters and characters in Sinnoh (Lucas/Dawn/Barry)
Sounds good, but you have to be careful to do it well. Also, don't use too many characters like that, because it can be very confusing for the reader. You could maybe pick four or five characters whose POV you use and then switch between them when needed. Also, please don't write "Lucas's POV" when you switch to his point of view. You can use his name as a title if you want to make it clear who's talking...

You bring up really good points so I'm going try coming up with stuff that makes more sense.

Hmm, I was thinking Kanto and Johto to be allied just for being connected but if I go with the sinnoh/kanto and hoenn/johto that could be interesting as well, there could be a good potential for a big land battle and the area between could be something like a DMZ in the beginning. I just have to think about it though because I already have some characters but it should be easy to just swap nationality's.

You know, I really can't imagine Prof. Birch as an armor developer. I mean, as a Pokémon researcher, he's essentially a biologist. Unless those armors are organic and based on Pokémon, I really don't see how Prof. Birch could be working on them.

Essentially, that would be the army's special troups or whoever are in the frontline of the defense.

Now this is a big point you brought up and I have thought about it. Prof. Birch works with other developers, maybie from Devon or something to make the armor. And each armor system sync's up to the user's pokemon if they have anything or to other squadmates pokemon that allows for translation hardware to work, allowing for speaking with pokemon. Also with the "special armor" for Brendan/May/Wally won't be special now. The armor will be almost exacty the same as the other armor but Prof. and some of the other developers have tinkered and modified them but has not been tested for military use. Now the modifications are traveling based and instead of having to be equiped before battle the armor is somewhat like a pokeball in which it shrinks and is in the form of a modified pokenav (Devon) Prof. Birch gives them the armor systems to help ensure that they are as safe as possible and also because Hoenn's military issues a draft-like order that allows them to enlist anyone over the age of 13. The Hoenn Spec Opps. units would be equiped with the armor metioned earlier while other troops and conscripts would have regular armor and equipment. If you want more details on the armor or charcters I'll happily give you more information.

I think I covered the speaking with the armor translator. For the POV, it will most likely just be following a group (Brendan group or Lucas group or Spec Opps squad) or something like that. I think I have this down as well.

If there are any other things that sound weird or don't make sense then just tell me and I will either try to explain or fix it by changing some things. Thanks for the opinions and the points that you pointed out.

EDIT: I screwed up on the quoting so I just boldified all of my text, sorry.

Yeah, I also think that the opportunity for a land battle could open up new possibilities for the plot and especially for war scenes. Invading another country from air or from the sea just doesn't have the same drama value as a real, face-to-face land battle. I also think it's better to change the nationalities of the characters than to continue with the alliances you had been thinking about. Think about it: Kanto and Johto are both situated between Hoenn and Sinnoh, so they could easily prevent any messaging between the two. It'd make their alliance a hard one... Then again, that might be interesting, too. You just have to think it through carefully if you want to go with that.

Now this is a big point you brought up and I have thought about it. Prof. Birch works with other developers, maybie from Devon or something to make the armor. That does explain a lot, yeah. So, essentially, Birch isn't the one designing the armors. He's the one designing the synchronising features... That makes a lot more sense.

Now, what interests me here is the age of your characters. You say that anyone over 13 can be enlisted after the issued order and that Birch is concerned about their safety. I take it this means they are over 13? I just want to note that they should all be at least a bit older than 13 years old, since a war like that doesn't just ignite in a few years. If so, maybe it would be a bit more realistic if the age limit for enlisting would be a bit higher, like, say 15. I honestly don't think 14-year-olds are very useful in war... But that's really up to you. I see that you have really thought about this, so I think you can also pull this off very well. I'm just trying to test you to see if you have left any holes in your concept  I hope I am useful to you!

That said, when you start posting your fic, remember to mind grammar and spelling. It's a bit off in your regular posts, but I trust it you know how to write and so on. Don't hesitate to ask for a beta reader in the appropriate thread, even if you don't really feel like needing one; beta reader are way more helpful than you'd think. Also, don't hesitate to ask general questions here or in the Lounge thread. I can also help you if you need it ^-^

Good luck with your fic! I'll keep an eye on the section to see when you start posting it, since I totally love Lucas. Watch out ;)

Well, a sea invasion can have the potential for being really dramatic (think D-Day) but land battles also have alot of flair to them (think countless other examples, lol) For the age thing I was just thinking teenagers, plus fresh troops would not nessasaraly be put on the frontlines, they can be trained for about a year then put on active duty. Now those troops are going to be regular, no hi-tech armor or weapons but the armor for spec opps and our Hoenn MC's have a neural system amplifier of sorts that links directly the the user's nervous system and gives the user increased reaction time and amplifies strength. When active it sends information to the user about combat technuiqes and weapon usage. These are not noticably learned by the user, noticing them as if by instinct. For example, say Brendan has the armor active and has never used a pistol in his life, but knows how to load, reload, and charge the gun with relative ease. As for the grammer, expect to see a lot of "I ams goin ovar thar!" type of things, JK.

EDIT: Oh and also if anyone wants to suggest a character or something you can. I need some extra characters and just tell me the character's name, personallity, or just some details about them.
