Brand new here, been trolling for a bit. I just started into Pokemon over the weekend, and am making my way through Platinum for the first time. I have been trying to research information on how to get started the best, and haven't had much luck. Most people seem to feel very strongly that you can train however you want. I hope asking a few questions here is not inappropriate.
I am largely interested in Psychic pokemon, and from what I gathered, one of the better pairings is Steel to reduce some of Psychics inherent weaknesses. Bronzor is one I just stumbled onto and seems like a decent starter.
I haven't been able to find any "must have" lists for Pokemon catching (aside from Legendaries, which I assume I can save till later), once again going back to the train however you want mentality, is that true, or will I be severely hurting myself by just grinding my starting Pokemon to high levels and overpowering the gym leaders?
I realize I can do whatever I want, but was hoping to get some insight on ways to start a game that will lead to more enjoyable meta game play?
I largely started to play to compete with my nephew, who is totally into this. He seems to have a really good time (A few level 100s, Dialga, Palkia, and by the time I catch up, Giratina, at 100), but I'd like to help him learn how to lose gracefully. From his explanations of the game, I can tell he isn't very much into the statistics, or EV training his Pokemon, so I am sure there is an opportunity to beat him.
I look forward to any advice or help, as I'm learning to play. So far its been quite fun, and much more addicting then I originally expected.
Pokemon Platinum is win. <3

I used to be a huge fan of Psychic and Water pokemon a few years ago.
Bronzong can be pretty useful for walling. :]
Don't worry. there are many guides here about EV training and such.
