As funny as it may be, that map really is true for about 35% of this country (with the exception of dragons).

The general mentality is something along the lines of "God bless america, and god damn all the other countries on this earth!"

As Ted Turner said, this country is chock full of some of the stupidest people on the planet, and there are certain people who like to take advantage of that.

Spoiler:
When creating the world, God said to St. Peter:
"I'm going to create one country that has astonishing natural beauty, is filled with an abudance of natural resources. And to top it off, the people there will be the friendliest in the world" St. Peter frowned a little.
"Well, God, what are you going to call it?" God thought for a second then smiled.
"I'll call it Canada. The people will be Canadians." Peter sighed and then looked at God.
"But, don't you think you're being a bit generous to these...Canadians?" God chortled and winked at Peter.
"Well you haven't seen the neighbours I'm going to give them yet!"

yeah, unfortunately, the map and the joke are accurate....

That joke above my post and the map are, sadly, so true. America is seen as the greatest country in the world, yet the sad truth is.. that's not exactly right. I guess in some ways though, I have to give it credit- freedom, and all that. But in some cases- including education- we're not exactly the top bananas.. dragons.

Below: A map displaying countries' relative sizes by the amount of seconds that US news channels have spent reporting on them (Feb 07). Also a related blog quote.
Spoiler:

I am not on a mission to prove America has a great amount of vanity for itself, that is for the world to decide. Staying strictly non-partisan on this post, I am more or less pointing out American media needs to keep an open mind on what is going on in the world. Sure, the American people love to sit and watch the carnage in the middle east, but if you feed a dog its favorite treat forever, its going to forget there are other good foods out there to sniff at. And in a sense, the American press has been serving that dog two types of food for years and only giving it periodic sniffs outside its realm to the surrounding world, so it barely has a chance to be curious.

I can name at least 10 people in 30 seconds who think the world looks like that.

I am not one of them.

I want to see their representation of the French. Apart from YUROP.
No, you do not. Let's just keep it at that.

I see this is a true representation of the world. There has been many before who stated such things (apart from dragons). There are people in certain countries that can take things into different perspective and bring out the bad in it, but then there are others in the world who state the truth bluntly, where others don't like it, but need to accept it.

This may be funny, but I think this is what some American children sees the world.

Are their dragons in SA, Africa and Australia? Monitor lizards maybe...

SA ought to be called "Jungle land", Africa "Lions Den" and Australia "Kangaroo island". :O

And what are "commies"?

"YUROP" theme park? Give me a break!

Commies are communists.

This thread is worthless.

We all know America sees America as king. We enforce our eco-loving attitudes on the second-world countries, who just want to be like us, but with all this eco-crap, they can't afford be like us. We also push it on the third-world countries, who are just trying to get by. We're the ones that are screwing up their environment anyway. But without us, your world would be a LOT crappier than it already is.

There is some trith to what your map depicts, but it's not true for all Americans.
I don't think America sees itself as the king by any means. I think America sees itself more as the World Police, as if it's our job to fix all the other countries problems. I think we go into places thinking we'll help them, but we just end up pissing them off. I think it's great that we want to help people, but we should fix up our own home before we go on trying to solve everyone elses problems. We have the same problems in our own backyard :/

Um... No. YOU don't see America as king. AMERICA sees America as king. And those problems overseas affects us a LOT. All that policing we do benefits us. It gets us cheap oil, labor, manufacturing, etc.

Eh... I will admit, the other picture I saw of this gave me a good chuckle at first, but geez I see here some of you guys really like to bash America. x__X Personally, I don't like to generalize. Not all Americans (or all of "America" for this matter) thinks like that. It kinda hurts to be summed up by others as some self-centered, lazy, mcdonald addict who is so naive as to think similarly to the concept of this picture: http://arvind1187.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/the-world-according-to-americans.jpg

I'll agree with that. It is a little funny, and it is true, that some people here in America ARE slobbering idiots who hate 'commies' and think they're 'the shizz'. Not all of us are like that though.

Um... No. YOU don't see America as king. AMERICA sees America as king. And those problems overseas affects us a LOT. All that policing we do benefits us. It gets us cheap oil, labor, manufacturing, etc.
You're only about 25% right. We don't see ourselves as king. We do however defend our interests to the fullest extent possible, and that's likely to leave some hurt egos laying around. We do however try our hardest to make up for that. OK, so we don't always know what's best for our neighbors, but we do have the kindness and courage to offer to trade with any country, and the guts to take steps to ensure that such trade remains fair and (hopefully profitable for both the US and the country in question) as well as try to keep things from disrupting said trade. After all, it's not that we are trying to be selfish.

There is some truth to what your map depicts, but it's not true for all Americans.

You're about...75% correct. We don't 'see ourselves' as world police. The job sort of falls into our lap so to speak, and we're a country of people who simply have a 'Git R Done' (to quote Larry the Cable Guy) attitude.

Because such conflict not only affects our country and economy, but others as well...We tend to be forced to step in to solve the problem. America tried an Isolationist policy back in the WWII era, and that led to well...World War II. Check your history books sometime.

You're completely wrong. The mentality in America is "God bless America, and god help us save all the other countries on this earth!"
Which...is a blessing and a curse. It's wonderful that we're a very giving country. It does however suck, that we end up hurting some pride by taking action. Yes. We're capitalists. We do tend to be driven by making money. However, that doesn't mean we're out to make every other country in the world into 'our little subservient cash cows'. I will freely admit, that America is NOT the paradise we make it out to be. It's really no better or worse than any other civilized country there is on the planet.

We have our own problems too. We generally do have a track record of addressing most major problems. (with the exception of a few, but we're a nation of humans, much like any other nation so we're bound to make some mistakes.)

America was founded on dreams, it runs on dreams. Yes, we're bold, brash and sometimes quite too forceful. However I do believe that we all intend well.

That being said, I will admit that the past 8 years have been a bit rough. George W. Bush did not do us any favors by doing some of the things he did. However, not all can be blamed on him alone. We must also look to the 107th, 108th, 109th and 110th United States Congress and realize that they too are all partly to blame for the mess that we are currently in.

Now I know the current congress and administration have taken some very bold steps, but let us see where those take us before passing judgment.

That was supposed to be a funny, facetious comment...although I think that is the mentality for that group of people who believe "There's nothing better than a dead liberal" (a sympathy expressed at the tea-bagging convention). I guess some people are too thick headed to perceive that it was a semi-sarcastic comment. Eitherway, a lot of hard-core conservatives do think very little of nations and ethnicities that are notably different from America...just look at the radio show host Jay Severin calling the Mexicans "primitives" and making a bunch of incredibly derogatory generalizations about them.

Usually, when America tries to "save" another country, or certain people in a country, it is entirely for its own (usually economic) interests, as opposed to being out of genuine sympathy.

Secondly, isolationism did not lead to WWII. That's the most ridiculous comment I've ever seen on this board. Expansionism on the part of Germany and Japan led to WWII, and the US' involvement in it.

I think it's good that you posted in this thread, because, to some extent, you're what it's all about.

Whoa there buster. Keep the partisanship out of this. I don't consider myself conservative nor liberal, since both sides can be rather silly at times. My point is simply to call out the pointless bashing of America. There isn't a need for me to grace your rude comments with much more reply.

That aside your so called 'Funny, facetious comment' was a little over the top.
I'd like to see some sources backing you up on that comment regarding isolationism. If you can cite something civilly, that'd be wonderful.
