Prologue: The Girl in the Mist

The Emerald Forest shone vibrantly with the afternoon rays of sunlight, casting a vivid, green glow upon the thick canopy of leaves resting on the forest floor. The trees stretched their branches towards each other, their leaves dancing in the slight breeze, forming a sort of archway overhead. During this time of the day, the Emerald Forest was always crawling with activity, may it be the distinct chirping of the Pidgey, ruffling their feathers in their nests, or the slithering movement of an Ekans, stealthily stalking its prey. Suddenly, a Pidgey screeched out in alarm, flapping its wings in panic. A heavy, dense fog slowly rolled into the forest, blocking all sight. The shocked cries were drowned out as the fog crawled forwards, wrapping its large and misty body around the woods.

In the haze, a figure slowly appeared, hovering in the air, dipping its head curiously as it let out a soft cry. It was hard to tell in the fog, but its form slightly resembled that of a young woman’s. The sound of tinkling bells was heard, and another silhouette stepped forward to the first one’s side. This one had a surely human form; but the person was wearing a long, misty cloak, and he or she covered his or her head with the cloak’s hood, so it was impossible to distinguish his or her face. As the person spoke in a clearly female voice, only the strands of her grayish violet hair that stuck out of her hood could be seen.

“This is strange,” she murmured. “A dense jungle like the Emerald Forest should never get any fog. What do you think, Froslass?”

The hovering figure rolled her eyes. Her body was mostly white, and a white mask covered her purple face. A red sash was tied around her waist, and round, blue plates formed at each end of her arms. The creature’s head was incrusted with two large, blue crystals.

Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? Froslass responded flatly. This is Haze.

The hooded figure nodded. “A strong one, too. I think the entire forest is covered.”

Yeah, it is. Now can you please stop speaking out loud? Froslass asked irritably. The sound is hurting my ears.

The girl chuckled. “Sorry, but they have sensors, remember? They’ll find any soul-connection in the area in a few seconds.”

I don’t see the problem, Froslass insisted. If they come, we’ll just beat them up.

The cloaked girl laughed. “Come on, now, let’s go. We have to get to Azure Valley before sundown.”

As if we could see the sun in the first place, Froslass muttered to herself, grudgingly following after the girl.
