From go nintendo:
“Yes, I have thought of doing something new, and it makes me very excited to think of new elements for the game. This is just an idea but … as you know, Pokémon is a role-playing game. But, personally, I really like the action type of games, so we just talk about that sometimes. We probably want to add some kind action element to the game.” - game director Junichi Masuda

So your thoughts? I honestly as a fan of the series wanna call foul from now. I cannot imagine my Pokemon Games to have any action outside the battles.

I'm thinking a real-time battle system where you can see enemy Pokemon approaching (like FFXII).

Or maybe a Street Fighter-type setup, where the two fighting Pokemon can use generic fighting moves with "special" Pokemon moves mixed in. Attacks with 140+ base damage can be SUPER FINISHERS.

The only way that action+pokemon would be fun would be if it was something like Battle Network. Instead of chips, you get commands--rest up, guard, different attacks, etc. The chip selection screen replaces PP. It then limits the amount of attacks per battle but does not require an Elixir or trip to the Pokemon Center to get the PP back. Any other system, and...we'd totally lose pokemon.

If they want to add action to the games - as in, Game Freak themselves, I don't see it replacing the main, handheld series we know from RBY to D/P/Pt (and HG/SS), but rather being a separate one. Even if you were of the opinion that it's a repetitive, stagnant series (and you'd be right on the repetitive part - get Pokemon from a professor named after a tree, beat 8 gyms and become the Champion, insert plot on beating Team *insertnamehere* from doing something bad, catch some legendary Pokemon, add side features and you've got yourself a Pokemon game!), it's one that works very well - it gets its millions of sales at least, and that's what defines a game being successful or not - its sales.

And given the fact they've persisted with the same formula all this time with success - it isn't getting replaced. But of course doesn't mean that Game Freak wouldn't do such a thing (although it seems quite the different move for them...). Doubtful too that if they made such a game it'd be on the Wii as well, given they like to work on the handheld systems (and reportedly had no plans on making a Wii RPG, in another short articles a few months back).

I am also kinda sceptical on these comments here - it sounds just like a response to a question worded 'Do you see Pokemon going in this direction' or 'Could we see action put into the Pokemon games?', or something like that. He's merely saying that he likes action games, and it'd be nice if they put such a thing in. Reminds me of an instance when Sakurai, who is responsible for the SSB line, was quoted as saying he'd possibly be making an 'updated' version of Brawl. Everybody jumped up and down. Turns out it was taken out of context, of course - just said that he would have liked more time to put more content in, really.

I wouldn't read much into it, myself.

Agreed. If it does get implemented, I very much doubt it will be in the main series.

But if something like this did end up happening, how about a battle style like the Super Smash Brothers series (with the exception that you have Stamina all the time instead of losing by being thrown off the cliff)?

I think it would add to the game, personally, if some sort of 'action' element was implemented. Though, to be honest, Pokemon is the only RPG I like/have ever played. Most other games I play are action.

But since the statement was so vague, there's no real reason to try and make something out of it, good or bad. :/

Personally, I would be a bit meh if they made Pokemon more focused on action. :\ It depend, if they just tweak it to add action into it, or completely get rid of the Pokemon-style we loved. Yeah, I'm kinda torn between 'OMG, new style of gaming' or 'Noooooo!' XD

Well, I think it would be awesome if they did it! I think either a brawl-like graphical style, but with a 3d arena in effect, not just appearance. How flipping sweet would that be! Of course, this doesn't mean it will happen for real and truly, and certainly not as a part of the main series, but it could happen.

Action in my Pokemon games?! AWESOME!!! :knockedou

Seriously, though, this would be a nifty thing to see in the Pokemon series. However, the action should be implemented as a spinoff series, so as not to tamper with our beloved main series Pokemon RPGs. It'd be nice if the 3D games were revamped to utilize this "action feature". The current 3D games are the exact replicas of the battles on handheld Pokemon games, except they're just brought to the third dimension. If you have a handheld version, there's not really a point to buying the 3D versions that are (besides Pokemon Colosseum and XD) virtually devoid of a plot or storyline.

An actual difference from the main series game could benefit the 3D ones better. As for Stadium-era minigames, they could be included in the revamped 3D versions.

If Nintendo could create an innovative fighting style to distance itself from other fighting games, that'd be cool. Maybe assign only 4 actual moves to A, B, X, and Y (or use 1 and 2) buttons on the Nintendo Wii controller? And other movements like walking/running, sidestepping, jumping, basic hits, etc. configured to other buttons/joystick directions?

For stages, past Stadiums (especially Gym Leader Castle ones from Pokemon Stadium 2) and Colosseums could be used, with added obstacles as well. Nintendo could also design brand-new stages or stages based on different locales in the Pokemon games and anime (Volcano w/Bridge stage FTW!). 3D moves can have the same PBR (or later) animations.

Anyway, using a 3D action-oriented Pokemon game could really benefit the series. It would sure be a change of pace from the (sometimes) slow-paced/lengthy battles we've all been accustomed to for so long. And lastly, it would be simply EPIC to see a fluidly animated 3D Blaziken and Lucario brawling with swift moves! :D
