Hello. This is my second fan-fic, but I decided to close the other one due to the over-dialogue. Hope you like this one though.

Chapter 1: The Encounter

They lie low among the foliage in the mountains, trusting it to cover their hues. Two soldiers, poised and ready to leap into action as soon it appeared, crouched still in bare silence. Their Pokemon, evenly trained, waited orders from their trainers. They kept silent as possible, and move just when it is necessary.

"What time is it?" the first soldier, clad in green uniform, asked. He had the air of a very experienced soldier, and his badges, pinned at the sleeves of his soldier clothes were the proof. He was known as Sal for that was his codename. The Top Soldier gave the codename to him because he could do surveillance in the Sea, Air and Land, with his Pokemon. At normal times, he would be seen wearing his Major clothes, and standing straight, barking orders at everyone. but this was one of those times were you can see who he really is. He wore his soldier uniform, and pinned on his badges. He ordered the surveillance with the air of superiority, giving his comrades the sign that he was in charge. He was, in short, bossy.

""Nineteen hundred hours, Major." This soldier might be new. Every new soldier emits a happy-go-lucky aura whenever they were at the headquarters, and he was glowing with it. When they were in the battlefield, new soldiers practically gave their positions away, and only a few managed to keep their heads with them. This one must be one of the few,Major Sal thought to himself. The new soldier was trembling in fear, yet he was fidgeting in excitement. Good, it means he was ready to go on. He nodded in acknowledgment to the new soldier.

"They will be nearly here." Major Sal said. He glanced towards the south. The sun has set a few hours back and the mountain was shrouded in an impenetrable darkness. Another thing that will hide them, major thought. He surveyed the surrounding area with a practiced eye. He was keeping look-out for the enemies' frontman who would clearly keep everything away from the troops. A rustle among the bushes in a nearby tree aroused his suspicion. The new soldier, whose name was Diether, also caught the movement and sent out his Pokemon, an Absol. Sal ordered Diether to wait while he make the first move, "Poliwrath." He turned to look at his Pokemon, who was lying low at the grass. "Stage 1 Water gun." Poliwrath released a small spray of water from his mouth at the tree. Something rustled again, and Diether tensed. He was frightened. By the darkness, by the excitement, by the war. The rustling continued, and out came a Hoothoot, hopping madly. It flew away in search for a new home.

"I thought that was the frontsman." Major Sal whispered to Diether and Diether merely nodded. He was too tensed up to move, and sweat was blinding his eyes. He wiped them off and immediately watched the route below. It was a craggy one, full of rocks and boulders. A perfect place for ambush, Diether thought. Sal raised a hand, flashing different number codes. 4-3-5-4 came. His Noctowl silently swooped to him in a nearby tree. "Noctowl, search the area behind that hill." Noctowl immediately followed orders. They were waiting for the enemies' supply committee, the group that would carry the food supply to the enemy. That was their goal. To raid the supply unit of the Red Troop, as they were told to do by Top Soldier Beta.

After a few painstaking minutes, Noctowl came back to report. Sal's Noctowl were one of the few Pokemon to learn communicating with human via telepathy.

"They are here." Noctowl said to Major Sal. He nodded, then gave another signal to his Skuntank. This time it was 2-1-3-2., Skuntank went to the Major. It crouched again without making even the slightest noise. Major nodded to Diether, signaling the start of the mission. Diether called on to his two other pokemon,a Gardevoir and a Primeape. They too were tensed like their Trainer, but also seem as ready. A low rumble was heard all over the place, and a big group of soldiers and Pokemon were marching in the craggy route and guarding what it seems like a truckload of food. Sal raised his hand in preparation to give his signal. His Noctowl prepared to strike with a long range Psychic, his Poliwrath ready to shoot a Focus Blast and his Skuntank ready to release it's stench. Diether held his gun, but he knows he was not yet ready. He looked at Major Sal, and nodded. Sal started to point his hand at the unit but something swift held his hand.

"Bad luck, Major." the voice said. It was a large man, wearing the uniform of the enemy. "Bad luck." He laughed an evil laugh and crushed the major's hands. Sal grimaced in pain, but he managed to form a 2-5-3. Retreat, Diether thought.

"Gardevoir, Teleport!" Diether shouted. He closed his eyes and Major did the same. They tried to reach the familiar feeling of being teleported, but it never came. Sal opened his eyes to look, and immediately knew why. A Trapinch and a Wobbuffet was standing near the red guy, and both of the Pokemon's abilities was to ensure that they were trap.

"Stupid! We're screwed!" Sal cursed. He gritted his teeth and thought of another plan. Sweat began to form in his forehead.

"Trying to escape are you?" the red man laughed once more, and punched Sal squarely in the chest. Blood poured out his mouth. "Tell me. what are your plans?" the man punched him again.

"5!" he shouted. The man seemed confused for a while, but Diether understood. 5 means A and E: Attack and Escape. Sal's Pokemon atacked Wobbuffet while Diether's Pokemon attacked the Trapinch. Both Pokemon seemed to hold off a little, before fainting.

"Shoot!" the man cursed. "HQ! HQ! we are under attack! Reinforcements! Over!" the man shouted in his speaker phone. No response. "Well, I'll be damned." He shoot Major Sal in the chest, just inches away from the heart. Diether watched the scene as Sal fell slowly to the ground. Sal's Poliwrath caught him while hie was falling and Skuntank, togethr with Diether managed to push the man off the mountain. Diether ran to Sal.

"Major! Major! Wake up! We still have a job to do! Major!" he shouted. He checked for any pulse, but there was none. Diether looks so defeated. His Gardevoir came up to him and he said, "Mission Failed, Gardy. We failed." Diether sobbed as Gardevoir teleported him, Sal's body and all Pokemon back to the HQ.

I minimize the dialogue as shortly as I can. Any comment is welcome! i'll be adding the next chapter once I see any mistakes I've made. Thank you so much!

Chapter 2: The Order

Deither and the other Pokemon managed to reached the HQ without further troubles. Medics immediately went up to them and assisted Poliwrath, who was carrying Sal's body. Deither slumped to the floor to rest and reflect what had happened. Major Sal. One of the best soldiers there is. Dead in action. That would surely be the record in the Soldier History. He called all his Pokemon back, and stood up. He walk along the hallway towards T.S Beta's office to report what had happened. This was the first time he saw the hallway, because it was also his first time to report. Pictures of previous Top Soldiers line the grey wall. Some are cracked and muddled, but some seem to be fresh as new. The picture nearest to the main door of Beta's office was Beta himself. Deither figured out that this was taken a few years back, when Beta was still a Corporal. He had a nice face, with chiseled chin and thin lips. His nose was, though not perfect, was the most beautiful nose Deither had seen. His eyes were colored hazel, a deep variety of hazel, a mixture of black and brown. His hair was a straight, black, and thick bundle of fine string. His pretty face was not yet gorged by the marks brought in by the war. It seems like Beta here was more innocent than he was today. Diether guessed that the Beta in the picture have never seen a soldier die in front of him, have never heard the agonizing pleas of a tortured spy. He took his eyes away and focused on what was beyond the great oak door. He knocked and immediately, a gruffed voice answered.

"Come in." Deither opened the door, and looked around the T.S' office. It was undescribable. Grand would be the nearest description there is, but it is still an understatement. Golden chandeliers light the room. Rows of thick books fill the mahogany bookshelves. And in the center of it all, a long table filled with silver plates and utensils complete the grand design. He walked towards the table at the far end of the room. The face he saw there is certainly not grand. It was... experienced. A hardy look in the Beta's eye give him the look of being a tough guy, and the piratical eyepatch adds more to the effect. His face was full of scars, the most remarkable is the x-shaped scar in his left cheek. Deither kept looking at the x-shaped scar, but Beta noticed him staring at it.

"X-scissor from a traitor's Gliscor. Taught me never to trust guys wearing black suits and glasses. What do you want, Deither?" Beta was known to know every soldier in his department.

"Report, Sir!" Diether stood straight and saluted, embarassed for not having to do it a little while ago.

"Sit down, Deither." he offered Deither to seat down. "Tell me about the raid." Deither kept silent for a moment, a single tear forming in his eyes. A look of sadness conquered Beta for a moment but it quickly disappeared. "Ah, another loss. How?"

"An enemy shot Sel, at approximately Nineteen point Five hundred hour. A Red."

"They sure got gutsy men." Beta said. "What happened to the Red?"

"Skuntank and I manage to push him off the mountain, put some pressure on him." Deither answered.

"Overall?"

Deither considered the question for a moment, but decided that there was no escape so he answered, "Failure, Sir."

"So, the plan of ambush failed." Beta said. He kept silent for a while, but spoke again, "Many of our men perished during the numerous ambush the Red inflicted upon us. We need to end this once and for all.'

"Yes, Sir." Deither answered an unsaid question. "What can I do?" he asked.

"Recruits. We need more manpower. We need more people like you." He looked at Deither. "We need to find more willing soldier who will help us fight our way through the Red's fortress."

"And?"

"I order you to do it. Find more people. Understood?"

"Yes, Sir." Deither asked himself if he can really do the task.

"I believe in you, Lotus." Deither had gained a code name. You need to have a high reputation in the department to gain one.

"Thank you, Sir." He stood up and saluted. Beta, likewise, did the same.

"My prayer's go with you." Beta nodded. Lotus, previously known to be Deither, smiled warily. He stood up and went outside.

Yeah, that's Chapter 2. Hope you like it! Sorry if it seems so short.

Chapter 3: Partner and Departure

Lotus walked along the same gray hallway again, but this time he does not feel so defeated. He had been given a task, a task that would make all the difference between the win and loss of the Green troops. His eyes, previously dull, was now full of excitement. He felt like he was already a true soldier. He quickened his pace and reached the same room where he arrived precisely point five hour ago. The same medics are fussing over Sal's orphaned Pokemon, and putting bandages here and applying ointment there. He could feel the department's loss. It blanketed his head for a moment, but he remembered his task.

"Recruits. We need more men like you." Lotus remembered Beta's words. He slowed down as he reached Sal's Pokemon.

"I'm sorry for the loss." Lotus said to Poliwrath. He feel like he was to blame for Sal's death. Tears started to form at his eyes again. "I'm s-sorry." he sobbed. Poliwrath looked at him, and wiped the tear.

Noctowl, sensing Lotus, swooped down to them and said, "You are not to blame, Deither."

"Lotus, call me Lotus." Codenamed soldiers will never use their real name again. Noctowl stared at him with confusion. "Beta gave me a codename, and I am to embark on a dangerous journey," Noctowl nodded to Lotus.

"That would explain it." The bird said. "What journey?"

"Recruitment search." Lotus answered.

"I see, and when will you start?"

"As soon as possible." Lotus decided to speak as little as he can, so that Noctowl will not notice the trembling in his voice. Skuntank went to them and lay down on Lotus' feet. Lotus sat on the cold, hard floor to give the Pokemon comfort in this trial. Soon enough, this three Pokemon will be detained in the Daycare, and will just be called into action when all seems lost.

"What about you three?" Lotus asked.

"We can manage, Lotus. Don't wory about us," Noctowl said. Lotus nodded and soon enough, the three were pushed away to their places in the Daycare. Lotus followed them to check that they will be okay there. Daycare seems to be a nice name, but inappropriate. Barracks is more appropriate, where soldiers wait for orders. It was dark here, only few streaks of light from small windows on the ceiling enter the room, and only at day. Cages of different pokemon from dead soldiers occupy the room. All seem bored and hungry for action. They watched with avid interest as three of their new roommates enter the room. Noctowl was placed high in the room, with different Flying types. Poliwrath on some small aquarium near the edge of the room and Skuntank, like most land- dwelling pokemon, were put inside a large cage beside a Mightyena and a sleeping Hippowdon.

"See to it that the three new Pokemon get proper care." Lotus feel like the three pokemon were under his care now that Sal was dead.

"Yes, Lotus." Beta seem to spread Deither's new name quickly. The caretaker nodded to Lotus and continued, "All Pokemon here gets proper care."

"Good. I shall be going now." He turned his back and flashed the number code that all soldiers know, 3-2-4: I shall be back. He closed the steel doors behind him and put his mind to his task.

The room he just left was eerily empty, dark, and silent. Following his soldier instincts, he stealthily crossed the room with gun ready in his left hand. He could hear muffled footsteps form the other room and decided to search it. He pushed the door, and pointed his gun to the darkness. He heard a silent gasp. That's it, Lotus thought. He turned his gun to the left side of the door, and was surprised to see Moonlight, one of his batch mates.

"Moonlight! You scared me!" Lotus said.

"God! I was scared more!" Moonlight laughed.

"What are you doing here?"

"Trying to sneak some midnight snack to my room. How about you?"

"Trying to catch a midnight snack thief." They both laugh. He shone his trusty flashlight to Moonlight. He was taller than Lotus by a mere few inches. His face was round and it looked jolly always. Even in danger, his blue eyes would always have a slight twinkle in it. He wore his dark brown uniform whenever he parade around the campus. He will always be proud of his single badge. The one he got from the Battle at Tuskany. But, tonight, he was different. He wore his sleeping clothes, a blue shirt with a blue pajamas. His eyes was red and bloodshot, but with a look of toughness in it. He had grown a small mustache. He had a few scars in his cheeks and one big scratch in his forehead.

"Hell! What happened to you?" Lotus said. He had not seen Moonlight for merely a few months when Moonlight was sent to survey the Gulf of Riana. He had changed a lot, that's for sure. It seems like he had aged for ten years.

"What do you mean?"

"You don't look the same like i saw you before! You look... terrible." Lotus said.

"Ah, " Moonlight said while touching his scar in the forehead. "I was captured by the Red. We could not trust Jaguar," Lotus knew Jaguar. He was a skinny boy of twenty-two, that have a serious look in his face. "He gave us false alarms. Turns out he is a Red. Good thing he knew nothing." Moonlight continued.

"You were captured?"

"Yes. Captured then tortured. Asked me questions. In the end, Manner died. His head was Slashed by a Scizor. Gross. Would not like to see more of that." Manner was one of Sal's troopmates before Sal was assigned to the ambush committee.

"Urk." Lotus felt like he would throw up. He was a soldier, of course. He managed to force it down.

"How about you? What do you do?" It is Lotus' turn to tell his story. He narrated it, up to the point where he flashed the 3-2-4.

"That's sad," was all Moonlight could say, but suddenly his eyes brighten once more. Lotus could see the same Moonlight again. "A mission! Ok, then. I'll go with you."

Lotus was surprised by this sudden request, "Oh! Wait, man! You don't have the permission of Beta. Let's ask him." Together they walked the hallway to Beta's room. Lotus knocked and he opened it without a signal from Beta. He was still siting in the same table, and he was signing some papers.

"Good evening, sir!" Lotus and Moonlight saluted Beta.

"Good evening, Gentlemen. Take a seat." They both took a seat nearest to the officer. "I see Lotus is not yet starting your mission."

"I was looking after Sal's Pokemon and I was supposed to start it when Moonlight asked me to come with me in the mission, Sir!" Lotus answered.

"Moonlight. Well then, it is your decision to let him join the team." Beta said.

"Thank you, Sir!" Lotus stood up and saluted. Moonlight, likewise, did the same.

"When will you start it, Lotus?" Beta asked before the two soldiers could leave.

"Approximately at four hundred hour, Sir!" Lotus decided to start the mission at daybreak.

Beta looked at his watch and said, "You have three more hours to prepare. Good luck squad." Beta sat down again.

"Thank you, Sir!" Lotus saluted, and he went out of the room. Moonlight followed. "Prepare your things. This will be a long journey." Lotus saluted at Moonlight and they went in different ways. The start is coming... Lotus thought.

Chapter 4: Stepping out the Headquarters

Lotus ascended a dark staircase, lit by a few occasional torches. His shadow cast menacing figures on the dark wall. He quickened his pace to his room because, though a soldier he was, he was afraid of being alone in the dark. The dark cause his eyes to be blurry and he felt weak. He turned left and see himself face to face with a soldier. She, <yes, a girl>, seem to be a nighttime watcher, due to the black uniform she is wearing.

"Time. One point five hundred hour. What are you doing here?" she said.

Lotus racked his brain for her name. He have met her before, he was sure of it. She was a tall girl in her twenties, and, as Lotus remember, always had her hair up in a bun. But, this night seem to change everybody. She had hair down, revealing a sleek, long, black hair. Her eyes seem to have a slight twinkle in it. Her lips move with delicate sweetness as she speaks. Lotus finally remembered her name.

"I'm on my way to my room, Crescent." Lotus answered.

"From where?"

"Beta's room. Got an order."

"Do you know it's already an hour and a half since curfew?"

"Well, everybody might break some rules every now and then. But, really! I'm from Beta's room!"

"Well, then. Let me ask Beta first thing in the morning. Off you go." Crescent commanded. Even though she was nearly the same age as Lotus, she was already in a high rank, being in the department since she was twelve. Lotus saluted and went on his way.

"Oh, wait, Crescent." he suddenly said to the retreating back of Crescent.

"What?" she said impatiently.

Lotus hesitated for a moment, "I'll be gone here at four hundred hour."

"I see. Off you go." Crescent does not seem to care. Well, she is my superior, Lotus thought. He continued to climb the stairs and reached his room. He stared at his door for a moment. It was a simple door, no fancy decorations except the brass doorknob that was placed in the right side of the door. He put his hand on the doorknob but lingered on it for a moment.

"Well, I won't be seeing this for some time." he turned the doorknob and entered his room. Just like some boy's room, his was incredibly messy. Piles of used clothes were dumped in one side of the room. His Pokeballs were in his drawer at the foot of his bed. He opened it and saw 5 more Pokeballs. Together with the three Pokemon he brought in the ambush, it add up to a total of eight Pokemon. He decided what to take on this journey, but he thought that he would choose that one later. He went to his lean clothes and pack three jeans and some shirt in his green bagpack. He changed to his civilian wear and dumped all his dirty clothes in his cabinet. He fixed the covers of his bed, and placed the pillow at the head of the bunk. He went to his supply area and got a sleeping bag and put it in the bag along with the clothes. He then headed for the wash room and included a toothbrush and toothpaste. Lotus glanced around the room with an expert eye and look for something that seems out of place.

"Good, the place is clean. Time to pack my Pokemon." he said to himself. He opened the drawer and got all his Pokeballs. "Come out, guys!" he threw the balls in the air, and in one blinding flash of light, different sounds of Pokemon penetrated the room. A Tauros, a Gliscor, a Magmar, a Politoed, and a Cacturne appeared. He got the Pokeballs he used in the ambush and sent them out too. Gardevoir, Primeape, and Absol appeared. They joined the other Pokemon.

"Good. Now, attention please." Lotus said. His Pokemon fell silent and stared at them. "OK. To make a long story short, I am going on a journey. It will be a long one, and I will bring just six of you." He looked at his Pokemon then continued, "The two that will not be chosen will be sent to the department's mainframe to stay. I promise I'll be back. What I need for this journey is a good scout. Gliscor, you will go with me." He got Gliscor's ball and called it back and attached it to his belt. "I need sweepers." he called his Cacturne, Tauros, and Primeape. "An escape method." He called his Gardevoir. "And a slient one." This one will be hard, he thought. Politoed is such a joyful Pokemon and only appropriate for search and Rescue mission. He disregard it. Magmar is a sweeper and quiet Pokemon, but only if it was thinking deep, and Absol will always be silent. A choice between a tough but slow-thinker pokemon and a tough and fast-thinker is absolutely no choice. He called his Absol and strapped it's ball in his belt. "Don't worry. The soldier's here will have mission for both of you. Don't worry." he called them back and proceeded to his computer. Lotus opened a software called "Military Storage" and clicked the deposit Pokemon button. He put the two balls in the teleporter and they immediately disappeared. He hoped that the Pokemon he carried was enough and also hoped that Moonlight have a large flyer with him. Lotus got up and looked at the time. It was three o'clock in the morning. He decided to have a nap.

~~~~~~~~
He woke up half an hour later. Lotus thought that everything that happened the previous night was nothing but a bad dream. He nearly managed to convice himself that Sal was still down there, reporting to Beta, and Lotus was non-existent. But one look at his clean room told him that it really happened. He got up, got the key to his room, and locked the door. Lotus walked the same stairs again, and was surprised to see Moonlight waiting for him in the hall. Moonlight carries a fully packed gray bag, and wear a blue shirt and, just like Lotus, wear a belt that had six Pokeballs with it. Moonlight seems to be smiling and ran to Lotus as soon as he saw him.
"Good, you're now here." Lotus said.
"Yeah. I was here almost an hour ago." Moonlight said.
"May I see your Pokemon?" Lotus could not wait to see what Pokemon he will be working with.
"Sure." He threw his balls and out came Moonlight's Pokemon. He looked for a flyer and it surely is large. A Dragonite occupied more than a fifths of the room. Lotus seemed intrigued with the Pokemon, and it striked him. It was not the usual brownish dragon everyone know. It was darkish greenish Dragonite. Lotus raised an eyebrow in question.
"Meet Draggy! Met him while he was still a Dratini. He was different than the others. That caught my interest." Moonlight said while showing off.
Shiny Dragonite. Lotus remembered what they are called. He looked at his other Pokemon and he seem contented. They got everything covered. Moonlight got a Steelix, a Dewgong, a Scizor, an Infernape, and a Keckleon.
"Good. Let's go see Beta." they walked to the Top Soldier's room again. Beta is still signing those papers.
"Going now?" he asked.
"Yes, sir!"
"Good. Remember this. You will not have any contact with the department until this mission is finished. You need five more people. Good luck." Beta said. Lotus and Moonlight saluted and walked out of the room. Lotus wondered how in just a few hours time, his whole life was changed...
This seems redundant but I hope you like it! Chap 4!
Chap 5: Perdunterf, the Crowded
Lotus and Moonlight stepped out the great door that seals the inside of the hall. It was still dark, but not too long, the sun will surely rise. Lotus decided to take a train to Perdunterf the first city in miles. He looked at his watch. It was exactly four in the morning.
"Let's go, Moonlight." Lotus threw a ball, and out came his Tauros. He jumped in it's back and headed westward. Moonlight followed him, riding his Dragonite. Lotus' Tauros galloped faster, sensing the urgent mission ahead of them. It snorted with delight and continued to run, Moonlight behind its three tails.
~~~~~~~~~~

Lotus and Moonlight reached the train station at six. The sun had already peeked behind the mountains in which Sal had died. That seem like a long time ago, Lotus thought. He called his Tauros back and Moonlight did the same. He strapped the red-and-white Pokeball in his belt, and headed for the ticket counter. The woman at the desk seemed to be chewing something maybe a gum.

"Wadd'ya want?" the woman said with a slight Northish accent.

"Two tickets to Perdunterf, please." Lotus politely said. She cast a look at Lotus and Moonlight carefully. Too carefully to be a civilian, Lotus thought. He looked at her back. She seems to be in her mid-twenties and was wearing a red shirt embroidered with pretty stones. Lotus looked at her side and saw a bulge. A gun, damn it! Lotus said to himself. Better be careful. If they were wearing their soldier uniform, it would start a rumble. The battle between Green and Red, perfect... Lotus sighed.

"Tha' woul' be 20 freeway." Freeway was the basic currency used in their region, Utanah. Lotus got his wallet and pulled out two silver coins, and handed them to the woman.

"Take the left turn a few paces away from here. The train will be arriving at six th'rty." she said, and spat her gum at the pavement.

"Very good, thank you Miss." And what a perfect disguise for a Red, he thought. He smiled uncertainly at her and hurried to enter. Moonlight followed. A few more minutes would be hard. Lotus thought. He glanced at the railway and hoped for the train to come.

~~~~~~~~
The train came in time. It was simple, a silver, gleaming bunch of metal moving at a fast speed. Lotus and Moonlight entered the train, and took the seats nearest the door. Good thing we had guns, Lotus thought. Moonlight seems to be thinking of the same thing too, and kept glancing at the people around them.
"Just be quiet," Lotus said. Moonlight nodded and went to sleep. He looked at the time. Six thirty. Perdunterf would be a few miles away, so he decided to take a sleep at well. People all around him were dozing off to sleep and some are already snoring. Well, I could not blame them. This train is damn hypnotic. Lotus nodded off to sleep.
The train, ironically named The Dozer, halted to stop. People were pouring out the narrow door. Lotus woke with a start. He looked at the door, and was surprised to see people crowding in it to get out. Damn. That’s why we sat here to avoid that entire ruckus. Lotus gritted his teeth and woke up Moonlight.
“What?” he groggily said.
“Time to get movin’. C’mon.” Lotus said. He got his pack and headed for the exit. He pushed his way out, with an occasional swearing. Damn, get out my way. Lotus said to the passengers. Finally, with one powerful shove, he broke away from the crowd in the door. He sat on one of the benches just a few steps away from the door and waited for Moonlight. He saw him being crushed by the crowd and swearing under his breath. After a few seconds, Moonlight came out, sweat pouring from his face.
“God, Reds can’t kill me, but those crowds. They are more than… Damn! This heat is killing me!” Moonlight said, while he wiped the beads of sweat in his forehead.
Lotus laughed and said, “C’mon. Better get going.”
“Where?”
“Our mission, right?”
“Yeah, right. Where do we start?”
Lotus looked around and found the perfect spot to look. He headed for a ledge that overlooks Perdunterf. He saw a long line a minute walk away from the station.
“There. I think that is a tournament.”
“What exactly are we looking for?”
“Volunteers. The department have lost a great number of men this past few weeks. We need more recruits.”
“So, what makes you think that a tournament can bring people to us?”
“No. We will be going to them. Look for a talented trainer and recruit. That’s it. We need five. There are other towns and cities, of course. We will just start here.”
“OK. Let’s get going then.”
Chap 6: Tournament Day
Lotus and Moonlight walked along the ancient city streets of Perdunterf. People look outside their windows, grinning widely at the visitors and showering them with confetti. The tourist smiled and waved to the locals. According to the announcement they have read, today is the 101st anniversary of the city and the local gym. It also showed different areas of interest like the gym, the tournament venue, and the Hall of Fame. The venue of the tournament is just near them.
"C'mon, Lotus." Moonlight said. He was going to compete for the tournament a few minutes from now.
"Sure." They reached the venue of the tournament. It was a large dome, presumably about a hundred feet wide and a hundred feet high too. It was full of cracks as years go by.
"What do you, strangers, want?" A thin man said. He was sitting at the registration desk, and was holding a jingling box. He was thin but tall, and his green shirt with vertical stripes added to the effect of him looking like Daddy Long-Legs. "What do you want?" he repeated.
"Do you still have tickets for the tournament?" Moonlight asked. The man got a yellow ticket from his pockets.
"Aye, I still have. How many?" he asked.
"One, just one." Moonlight said.
"How about your silent companion?"
"An audience ticket." Lotus answered.
"Aye, that would be 15 freeway in total." Moonlight got some coins and handed them over to the man. "Please head over to that door. Contestants will turn left at the earliest turn. Audience will just head straight. Enjoy the tournament."
"Thank you, Sir." Moonlight said. They headed over to the door, and pushed it. "Whew, it is dark in here." They started to walk onwards when a panting boy came up to the man. He was breathing heavily like he had ran a great deal of distance. It seems like he was at his fourteens. He wore a simple shirt and crumpled pants. But, what caught Lotus' and Moonlight's interest was the balls in his belt.
"Hey, Mister. Do you still have a contestant ticket?" he asked.
"Yeah. I have the last one. Lucky you." the man said while grinning. "You seem to be late, Eugene."
The boy, called Eugene, just shrugged and asked, "How much?"
"That would be 10 freeway." Eugene handed his payment and made a run for the door.
"Excuse me, Misters." he said while pushing lotus and Moonlight. He ran off.
"That was incredibly rude of him." Moonlight said. He shouted at the back of the boy, "Hey, I'm sorry!"
The boy raised a hand and shouted back, "No problem!" He turned left.
"He does not know sarcasm, either." Lotus laughed. "Anyway, the rules says that the battles will be waged on four different battlefields: the ice, water, fire, and grass field. That means I'll be battling four different trainers. So my Pokemon should adapt on those battlefields. Hmmm... The rules also say that it will be a 3-3 battle. In case of tie, one extra Pokemon from each side will battle. So only 3 Pokemon to be used, not counting the extra Pokemon, on four different battlefields. The choice is hard. What do you think Lotus?"
"Dragonite? Show it off?" Lotus said. Moonlight laughed.
"Yeah, right. Be seeing you later!" Moonlight disappeared in a corner. Lotus continued to walk the silent path, but as he go farther, he can hear cheers. He opened the door at the end of the path, and was blinded by the brightness. Multitude of people came to watch the tournament. Even though it was not yet starting, they were already cheering wildly. He glanced at the contestants below. Moonlight was at the far right and was waving wildly to the crowd. Eugene, the local trainer, was standing still at the middle of the contestants. Lotus could see he was pale. Nervousness, I suppose. Lotus thought.
A deep voice boomed throughout the venue. It was a husky voice, like it came from a thirty-year old man. The crowd immediately fell silent.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Perdunterf tournament!" The crowd cheered again. Lotus took a seat nearer to the battlefields so he can see the battles clearly. The voice continued. "Trainers from all over the region are here today, clearly competing for the Perdunterf Trophy," a gold trophy embroidered with different kinds of Pokemon flashed on the blank screen, "and the pride to b called the 51st champion!" The crowd cheered harder. The voice continued to say all the rules and regulations of the tournament. Finally, "Let the battles begin!" A tournament tree replaced the image of the trophy on the screen. Moonlight's battle will be the last one of the elimination round.
Battles started but as far as he could see, Lotus could not find any suitable trainer. He sighed and thought, "Maybe we were wrong about Perdunterf."
Moonlight's battle was next. He walked into his place, then he waved to the audience. They cheered harder. His opponent, a boy in his eighteens, stood on the opposite side of the Fire Field.
"Commence battling!" the referee shouted. Moonlight tensed up and threw his ball.
"Alright, Dragonite!" he shouted. The Dragon Pokemon appeared. All audience seem to be transfixed on his Dragonite.
"What's this? A shiny Dragonite had appeared!" the commentator shouted. The crowd cheered harder again. Lotus thought with a grin, "Show-off."
"Will the shininess of his Dragonite affect the outcome of the battle? We wait for Carl's Pokemon." the commentator added.
"Piloswine, go!" The Pokemon appeared.
"Pi!"
The crowd cheered. The commentator tried to drown the cheers of the crowd, "Now, we have our two Pokemon. Battle begin!"
Chap 7: Battle on the Fields!
Carl stood poised on the other side of the field as it shouted orders to his Piloswine.
"Piloswine! Ice Beam!" A blue bolt of extreme coldness basted from the mouth of Plioswine.
"Dragonite! Diversionary tactics! Dodge then Wing Attack!" Dragonite flew up as the beam rushed past him. Then, it's wing glowed white and Dragonite quickly headed toward Piloswine.
"Piloswine! Dodge!" Piloswine managed to dodge the attack at the last minute, but Moonlight ordered Dragonite to attack it once more. This time, it went in contact with Piloswine.
"That would be a critical hit!" The commentator shouted. Lotus watched the battle and thought, "This one might be easy." Carl shouted order after order to his Piloswine and it followed with the air of expertness. Moonlight, on the other hand, goes on to the offensive. His Dragonite continued to strike Piloswine with Wing Attacks. Finally, Piloswine was cornered on the far side of the field. Piloswine looked around for an escape, but there was none.
"Wrap up! Hyper Beam!" Dragonite aimed a beam from his mouth to Piloswine.
"Piloswine! Ice Beam!" Piloswine fired another beam at Dragonite. They both let it out at the same time. An explosion shook the room and the field was covered in smoke.
"Woah! What happened in there? The beams hit!" the commentator shouted. The smoke cleared after a few seconds. The crowd gasped at the sight. The Hyper Beam was frozen by the Ice Beam. The yellow blast was stopped in its tracks by a blue bolt.
"What a sight!" the commentator said.
"Now! Wing Attack!" Moonlight ordered. Dragonite hit the frozen attack with a thud! and it broke! Dragonite hit Piloswine with a direct hit.
"Ouch! That would gonna hurt!"
Piloswine fell down. It tried to stand up but it failed. It then fainted in front of Carl.
"Piloswine can't battle! Next Pokemon, please." The referee shouted. Moonlight jumped in delight.
"Nice one, Dragonite!" It hugged Dragonite.
"Graa!" Dragonite continued to defeat Carl's two other Pokemon, Mightyena and Wormadam.
"Woah! First-timer Moonlight managed to surprise us with his skills! Moonlight is the winner!" the commentator shouted over the microphone. The crowd cheered for Moonlight. Different color of flags appeared over one side of the area, signaling the start of the next battle.
Moonlight continued to barge its way on the tournament tree. Finally, he defeated his last enemy for the finals on the water field. The championship is up next. Lotus looked up at the tourney tree. Moonlight managed to reach the top of the tree and with one more trainer left to face, he will get the trophy.
"Championship round is next! Will new-comer Moonlight able to bring the trophy home or will local trainer Eugene finally get in the spotlight? We shall know now!" the commentator said. The crowd cheered for Moonlight's and Eugene's Pokemon.
"And now, the crowd seem to be teeming with excitement! Let the Championship round begin!"
Moonlight stood at the right end of the Ice field while the boy they saw a while ago stood on the left. His look had changed. Not the baby boy look but with a fierce concentration. He was the first one to throw his ball.
"Okay! Yanmega!" Yanmega appeared. It was bigger that normal, so, Lotus assumed, it would be stronger. "This would be one tough opponent for Moonlight." Lotus thought. He looked at Moonlight and was surprised to see him smiling.
"That would be your mistake. Sending your Pokemon out first. Alright then! Infernape!" the Fire Monkey appeared. It threw series of punches into the air and cried out loud.
"Infer!"
"Now, the contenders seem to be heating up!"
"Commence battling!" the referee shouted.
"Let's do this quickly, kay?" Moonlight said to his Infernape. It nodded and faced Yanmega. "Well then, Infenape. Let's show them a Flare Blitz!" Infernape's whole body began to be enveloped in fire. It surged at Yanmega.
"Yanmega, dodge! Then use Air Slash!" Yanmega dodge to the side and it hit Infernape with a blade of air. Infernape fell down to the cold floor, but the ice surrounding it melted. Infernape stood up quickly with a look of disgust at the water.
"Ooohhh. It seems that Moonlight's Infernape had a lifetime hatred for water." the commentator said. Shouts of agreement erupted from the audience.
"Damn! Well then, Rock Slide!" Moonlight shouted. Infernape stomped the floor and huge rocks fell from the ceiling.
"Woah! Where did all that rocks came from?"
"Yanmega, dodge!" Eugene ordered. Yanmega dodged all the rocks falling by flying towards it's trainer.
"Hahaha! Infernape, Mach Punch through the rocks!" Infernape quickly threw a punch at Yanmega. It was blasted off, but haven't fell down.
"Yanmega! Bug Buzz!"
"Counter with another Flare Blitz!" Yanmega's attack and Infernape's attack collided. Both Pokemon were thrown off the field, and both tried to endure. But both failed.
"Both Pokemon fainted!" the referee shouted.
"Well, that was a nice round but I will give it all out next round!" Moonlight shouted. He threw a ball, and out came his Scizor.
"Scizor!"
"Good luck, Scizor!"
"Okay! Glameow!" Eugene threw his ball.
"Gla!" It was a Glameow, the basic form of Purugly. What an unusual choice for a battle. Lotus thought.
Chap 8: Eugene
"Gla!" Eugene's Glameow pawed the cold, wet floor. It purred at Scizor sarcastically, as if it was saying, "Here. Come and get me." It circled in its place before lying down, unmindful of the temperature. It stared at Scizor.
"Glameow? You will battle with that cloyster cat? Haha. Alright, Scizor! We can surely do it!" Moonlight made some gestures with its hands, Scizor mimicking every movement of his.
"Now, it seems that our contestants are heating up! Let's get this party started!" The commentator's voice boomed around the stadium. The crowd are shouting inaudible words to each contender. "This will surely be the main event." Lotus thought.
"Commence battling!" the referee shouted.
Moonlight started the battle with a Bullet Punch. Scizor's pincers glowed white and, in one blinding speed, started to rush towards the Glameow. What surprised the audience was what Glameow did next. Instead of matching Scizor's spped and dodging, it closed it's eyes.
"Double Team!" the order came from the other side of the Ice field. Copies of sleeping Glameows materialized around Scizor. The Bullet Punch missed. "Continue combo with a Shadow Claw!" The image behind Scizor started to break away from the other images. A black aura surrounded Glameow's paws, and headed toward Scizor. Scizor dodged the attack, but was continued by another Shadow Claw from another image. The attacks seem to be coming from everwhere. Scizor searched frantically for a way out.
"Scizor! X-Scissor!" Scizor closed its pincers and shielded its body. It's pincers started to glow white. As an image, or was it an image, of Glameow started to attack Scizor, Scizor let out the X-Scissor. Glameow fell down.
"Scizor manage to stop Glameow! That was a direct hit!" the commentator shouted. Glameow stood up and shook off the attack. The images of the other Glameow started to fade.
"Now, Scizor! X-Scissor!" Moonlight ordered. Scizor prepared the attack once more. Glameow stood its ground, looking at Scizor distastefully. Scizor let the attack flew off once again to Glameow. Glameow dodge the attack by jumping high, but it landed in a wrong angle. It purred loudly and fell.
"Scizor! Now is the perfect chance! X-Scissor!" Scizor managed to do another X-Scissor.
"Glameow! Hypnosis!" Both attack hit both Pokemon. Glameow feel down and purred in pain. Scizor, meanwhile, fell asleep.
"Scizor, wake up!" Moonlight shouted.
"What is this? It seems that both Pokemon can't battle anymore! It is another tie!" the crowd cheered harder. Caps flew all over the stadiums as youngsters threw theirs into the air. All were excited to see the outcome of the battle. "As we wait for their last Pokemon, they left as with a big question!" the commentator chuckled at the rhyme. "Who will be proclaimed victor?"
"Last out, Dragonite!" Moonlight chose his Dragonite. It sparkled like every shiny Pokemon. It flew across the field and landed in front of Eugene. It let out a Hyper Beam, like it was challenging Eugene to give out his best. Eugene seem undaunted by the taunt. He held his Pokeball in his hand and twirled it in his fingers. He looked at it for a moment before throwing it in the air. A Rotom appeared. It flashed a blinding yellow light all around the stadium. As the flash cleared, the audience could see that the ice around them melted.
"Woah. I'm sensing a hot battle!"
"Last Pokemon each out. Commence battling!" the referee shouted.
Moonlight ordered Dragonite to do a Hyper Beam. It flew past Rotom as if it was transparent. Moonlight looked stunned. Eugene sneered, "Hyper Beam don't affect Ghost-types. Rotom, Charge Beam!" Rotom sparkled with electricity and fired it to Dragonite.
"Dodge! Then Wing Attack!" Dragonite flew upwards and rushed towards with its wing aglow. Rotom dodged but Dragonite managed to swerve. Rotom was hit, but it did not do a decent amount of damage.
"Rotom, another Charge Beam!" Dragonite was forced to fly around in circles as it dodge Rotom's attacks. "Rotom, Confuse Ray!" Rotom fired a yellow ball and it hit Dragonite. Then, suddenly, Dragonite's movement became erratic. It flew here and there, without any specific direction. Moonlight's position suddenly went down.
"Rotom, Charge Beam!" It fired another one and this time, it dealt damage. Dragonite fell down. The crowd groaned as Dragonite hit the floor. Eugene's Rotom lowered itself down to the ground, and headed toward the fallen dragon. Eugene ordered another Charge Beam, but Moonlight suddenly shouted, "Earthquake!" The ground shook and Rotom failed to hit Dragonite with the Charge Beam.
"Damn! You took a great risk! What if that attack hit Dragonite? Then, you will lose this one!" Eugene shouted at Moonlight, enraged that his plan did not worked well.
"Risks should be taken." Moonlight said, as his once-fallen Dragonite hover above him.
"What are you, a goddamn soldier?" Eugene cursed. He bit his lip and shouted, "What? Answer me!"
"Honestly, I am." The crowd gasped.
"What the- a soldier entered the tournament! This is disastrous!" the commentator shouted. Damn you, Moonlight. We are working undercover! Lotus thought. Lotus took a ball from his belt and let out his Gardevoir. The Gentleman beside him looked at him in surprise. Lotus mouthed, "Sorry." He ordered Gardevoir to put everyone in the arena to sleep. Gardevoir used Hypnosis, and heads dropped one by one as each went into a deep slumber. Even the commentator's voice was cut off in mid-sentence. Lotus leaped off from the bleachers and headed toward Moonlight and Eugene.
"C'mon! Before everybody wakes up!" Moonlight followed Lotus, but Eugene stood there, rooted to the spot.
"Soldiers! You killed my family!" Eugene readied his fist to punch Moonlight but Lotus, quick on his feet, grabbed him by the collar and said, "C'mon! No time to lose! We will explain later. When we are out of this goddamn arena!" Lotus said.
Chap 9: Exhaustion
Lotus called out his Tauros, and asked Moonlight to get his and Eugene's other balls from the counter. Moonlight dashed off to the hallway.
"He will be going to get all your Pokemon. Anyway, come and we will follow." Lotus rode his Tauros and offered his hand to Eugene. He, meanwhile, was rooted to the spot. His face was flushed red in anger. His Rotom floated lazily beside him.
"Damn you! You're a goddamn soldier! You lot killed my family!" Eugene shouted. Lotus got down on his Tauros and held Eugene by the collar.
"Look, you don't know us, and we certainly don't know you, Eugene." Eugene wriggled in Lotus' grip, but it was too tight. "Come with us to your home. We will explain there."
"No way!" Eugene replied. He kicked Lotus in the shins, and that made his grip loosen. Eugene aimed a punch at Lotus' face and he rammed it hard. Blood poured down from his lips.
"Why you---?" Eugene aimed another punch at Lotus but, in a flash of light, a Gliscor appeared. It held Eugene's fist tightly.
"God! Are you trying to kill me?" Lotus said while wiping the blood of his lips. "Look, if we can't get you to bring us to your home, Gliscor will. Everybody had followed us with Gliscor. Come with us, now." Lotus ordered.
"No way!"
"Then you'll deal with Gliscor. X-Scissor!" Gliscor removed its grip on Eugene and attacked him with X-Scissor. "Another one, maybe?" Eugene was hit by a barrage of X-Scissor.
"Rotom, Charge Beam!" Rotom fired a Charge beam at the attacking Gliscor. It seemed unaffected by the attack.
"He's a Ground Type." Lotus watched as Gliscor continued to attack Eugene lightly. Finally, "Gliscor, stop." He recalled Gliscor. "This is the outdoors, Eugene. We are in charge." He hed Eugene by the collar and punched him straight into the face. Eugene groaned with pain, blood flowing in his left cheek. "Will you come with us, or taste my Cacturne's Needle Arm?" He loosen his grip on Eugene. Eugene lay on his back, gasping on the floor with several bruises on his arms. "Another one?" Lotus asked.
"No. Stop it. I'll come with you." Eugene said. Some of the people in the audience are starting to stir. Gardevoir's Hypnosis is already losing its effect.
"Good, but too late. Damn it. Tauros, return!" He recalled his Tauros and called his Gardevoir. Lotus held Eugene by the collar and used Eugene's Pokeball to recall his Rotom. He then held Gardevoir's hand as they Teleported to Moonlight. Gardevoir offered his hand at Moonlight.
"Hey, Eugene. Wake up. You need to help ourselves. Picture your room in your mind, as clearly as you can. Understood?" Eugene, weak by the several bruises he had sustained, merely nodded. Lotus nodded to his Pokemon, and they Teleported away.
~~~~~~~~~

They arrived at a fairly large room, but also very dirty. The sheets of Eugene's bed was crumpled, as if he haven't bothered to tidy it up. Several posters of rock bans adorned the seemingly plain, gray wall. A closet was loosely opened in the corner of the room, revealing Eugene's clothes. A clock hang on top of it. As Lotus looked closely, he saw it was 3 in the afternoon. Time flies quickly...Together with Moonlight, they heaved the bruised body of Eugene onto his bed. He groaned and coughed, otherwise he's okay.

Lotus rummaged the drawer beside Eugene's bed. He found his Pokeballs and his wallet, but no first-aid kit. This boy has a fairly large amount to know... Sigh... Lotus searched his backpack for a bandage. His hands carefully explored every nook and cranny in his bag, and found one underneath the shirts. He put it on the big scratch in Eugene's arm. Lotus flinched as Eugene groaned in pain. He tried to open an eye, but he can't. His face was pale already, and his eyeballs darted this was and that behind the closed eyelids. Lotus could feel he was restless.

"Just lie down, Eugene. You'll be fine." Lotus ordered his Gardevoir to use Hypnosis on Eugene to put him into a deep sleep. "Don't worry."

Moonlight slumped to the dusty floor. He stretched his hands and feet. "God, are we really doing the right thing?"

Lotus sat beside him. "We're no goddamn expert soldiers, Moonlight. We just follow orders. And I don't know about the right thing. The only thing I know, is we have done a thing. He's part of us now." Moonlight stared at him. "Yes, Moonlight. He's part of the team." Lotus said. He headed for the wall, where he sat. Minutes later, both soldiers were snoring.

~~~~~~~
"Dad?" a voice emanates from somewhere deep in Lotus' sleep. He opened his eyes, and saw Moonlight deeply snoring beside him. "Dad?" the voice said again. Where was it coming? Lotus looked around. Eugene was also deeply asleep in the bed. "Dad!" the voice shouted. Suddenly, Eugene's blanket was thrown away, and Eugene sat up, gasping. He looked around the room and saw Lotus staring at him.
"What happened?"
"You were dreaming." Lotus calmly said.
"Who are you?" Eugene asked. Suddenly, his face lit up in recognition. "You're the goddamn soldiers that kidnapped me!"
Moonlight suddenly woke up. "Hey, what's with all the outburst?"
"You killed my family! You'll gotta pay for this!"
"Hey, kid, calm down!" Lotus said while pushing Eugene to the bed. He punched Lotus again, and this time Lotus did not hesitate. He punched Eugene as hard as he can in his stomach. Eugene collapsed to the bed, gasping for air.
"That's what you get. So, calm down!"
"I will not! Unless you tell me everything! The reason why you killed my family, and kidnapped me!"
Moonlight nodded to Lotus. Lotus put his hands to Eugene's shoulder and firmly said, "We were not involve in a goddamn murder. And we didn't kidnap you. Listen, we will tell you everything."
