If I don't get Slowpoke in time, I might wait until Corsola is aquirable and catch that instead. I used one in Pokémon Ruby and it was an excellent member on my team. Though, for a change, I might still consider Slowpoke, just for a Psychic combination.

A lot of people miss the point to these types of pokemon. It is to challenge you as a trainer to use what you have, and sure they may not be strong but they become strong and their evolutions are for the most part as well. I have mentioned before

Pidgey--->Pidgeotto--->Pidgeot which turns out to be one of the best flying types
Caterpie--->Metapod--->Butterfree a strong bug type who is looked down upon but its powders and physic attacks are pretty powerful
Hoothoot--->Noctowl A flying/normal type pokemon who also has the ability to learn physic moves. Noctowl is pretty awesome
Ratata--->Raticate Not a big fan of, but Raticate's hyper fang is pretty good. It does have some fast moves as well
Geodude-->Graveler-->Golem (via trade) A pokemon with good defense to physical attacks and can bash some powerful ones back as well

There are still many people who may not like or use these pokemon but they are very useful I think. I do tend to have Butterfree and Pidgeot in my party as starters for me. So I say keep them the same!

Everything you said is exactly right. A lot of Pokémon are looked down upon because of their stats. Though, any Pokémon and any team can work out perfectly fine when it comes to in-game battles.

Of course any Pokemon is fine for normal in game battles, because they aren't really tough or anything. This defiantly true in GS since a lot of people say the beat all of Johto with just a Typhlosion. If one deeps into the competitive pool, most of those named Pokemon are bleh...

Competitive battling is way different from an in-game type battle, that is for sure.

Oh yeah, I remeber I'm going to have to wait all the way until the Bug Catching Contest to catch my Scyther...Too bad that didn't come any earlier.

Unown can only learn Hidden Power and they won't be able to be caught until a little farther down the story of the game too.

If you count Noctowl as being able to learn Psychic moves and then Ghost types for partial Psychic abilities then yeah you can say so. Though, for real Psychic types like Abra and others, they were catchable a little later on, not too far though.

Dark types, there weren't much at the time, but Umbreon you can get through Eevee at night after it like syou enough. Then houdour you couldn't catch until you arrive to Kanto. Then, for Sneasel I think that was in the Ice Cave. So, for the Dark types it isn't too early like some.

I cannot wait to get Eevee then be able to get a fire stone to evolve it into a Flareon, my favorite fire type and Eevee evolution. :)

I think every dark type pokemon is pretty cool because they have their own ways of battling. Also I wouldn't want them too, too early in the game because then where would they put it? Ilex Forest wouldn't be a great place to put it in my opinion.

There are other Pokémon out earlier in the game who can help, even if they not be too your liking.

Though, Mareep and I think one or two other electric types aren't too far away later on.

You could always match his type of flying with Pidgey who evolves into Pidgeotto at level 18, also Hoothoot and its physic attacks that evolves into Noctowl at level 20 can come in handy. Falkner isn't that hard, just train Chikorita and your others plenty before challenging him.

Plus, if they keep the Gyms at the same levels as the original, and with the new moves out Pokémon can learn, it shouldn't be too hard even if the right Pokémon you need aren't able to be caught that easly as yet.

In Pearl/Diamond/Platinum Buizel-Floatzel, Luxray, and StarRaptor were all very useful.

There's also the rare Jigglypuff if anyone bothers to look for it. xD

You could get Vulpix before Bugsy, too.

I know, i thought everyone would just pass by Jigglypuff. with sing at an early level it becomes a very good foe to face, and for such a low level has a rather high HP. You even get it before the first gym!

Jigglypuff is VERY hard to find though. Most people don't even know they are found there. But it becomes very useful since its the only Pokemon with Sing early in the game (making Gym leaders easy if you could pull off sleeping all their Pokemon).

I don't think you could find a Moon Stone early on, though, so it will have to stay a Jigglypuff for a while.

Best thing to do before battling Falkner: Go to Sprout Tower. You battle all the Sages and level up your Pokemon. Get your starter to level 6 or 7 before battling your rival in Cherrygrove as well. Battle every Pokemon you run into and battle all the trainers before Violet City. Anyone who uses Chikorita, you could use a Butterfree to battle Falkner. Just use Confusion. You don't necessarily need an electric type to beat him. Hey, you could use Geodude (from Dark Cave) to battle him if you want to. Last time I checked Rock moves were super effective against bird types.

(I used to have a level 50-something Wigglytuff....) Maybe I'll get a Jigglypuff again...if I can find one.
